Helena is the intelligent, horse-mad daughter of a British chieftain who is thrown into marriage with the man who will one day become the Roman emperor Constantius. Leaving home for lands unknown, she spends her adulthood seeking truth in the religions, mythologies, and philosophies of the declining ancient world, and becomes initiated into Christianity just as it is recognized as the religion of the Roman Empire. Helena-a novel that Evelyn Waugh considered to be his favorite, and most ambitious, work-deftly traverses the forces of corruption, treachery, enlightenment, and political intrigue of Imperial Rome as it brings to life an inspiring heroine.

Review
"Helena may be read on two levels of appreciation. As bright entertainment, or as deceptively profound commentary. On both levels it's a superlatively well done book."―Chicago Tribune
"In Helena, the play of words and the fireworks, the exquisite descriptions of landscapes, and even the finished portraits of the heroine, her husband, and her son, are always subordinate to the author's broad vision of the mixed anguish and hope with which the world of Constantine's time was filled."―New York Herald Tribune
"In its spare narration and crisp dialogue, in its deceptive simplicity, in the ongoing collision between myth and history that gives rhythm to the narrative line . . . Helena was Waugh's most intentional statement about the truth of Christianity and about vocation as the heart of Christian discipleship."―George Wiegel, First Things

Modern Tone Undermines Waugh's Important Message
By Kevin M. Derby
While he considered it to be one of the most important books he ever wrote, Evelyn Waugh's "Helena" is not one of his stronger outings. Originally published in 1950, Waugh makes no bones about his Catholic faith. His take on Helena, the Roman noblewoman who was Constantine's mother and the reputed founder of the True Cross. There are moments, especially in the last fifth of the book, when Waugh writes some of the most moving and insightful passages he ever crafted on religion. But Waugh undermines his book by making Helena talk like an English girl of the twentieth century and some strange attempts at humor (including a tortured routine on King Coel and bringing in the "Old King Cole" nursery rhyme). Waugh's not so subtle comparisons between the Roman Empire at the end of the third century and England after the war fall flat. To have Helena talk like one of the girls in earlier Waugh masterpieces like "Vile Bodies" seems a little forced and readers might tune out the more serious parts of the book. Waugh is, as always, a master of prose which redeems the book a great deal. While a solid book, "Helena" does not rank as one of Waugh's major works and readers unfamiliar with him should look at other books first.

"The enormous conflicting forces of the age, and the corruption, treachery and madness of Imperial Rome",
By sally tarbox
Short novel, in which the author takes what is known about 'Saint' Helena, and weaves the rest from imagination and legend. The novel opens when she is a girl, living in Colchester - the daughter of King Coel. A spirited, horse-mad young woman, she soon catches the eye of visiting emperor-to-be Constantius.
Waugh writes imaginatively of a time we know little about; palace life, the violent world of the ruling classes, and various religions, as people seek enlightenment (although the dialogue often makes them sound more like Bright Young Things than characters from antiquity!) Helena discovers Christianity and makes it her mission to go to Jerusalem to find the true Cross, but this is in no sense a preachy book - the aged relic-hunter Helena is a breezy, determined character.
Interesting (put me somewhat in mind of Robert Graves' 'I Claudius' trilogy) but with comic moments too

The Heroine you need
By Luisa
Although I'm Christian, I do believe Waugh's novel has the power to resonate with most.
This historical fictions follows Helena in her search for the basis of faith. Waugh implement s the use of religious and historical accounts, at times combining the discrepancies that have not been proven. It is a relatively quick read, and will leave you with great quotes and a new perspective on religion and 4th Century history.
