Ro murmurs into my ear. "Don't be afraid, Dol. They're not coming for us." Still, he slips his arm around me and we wait until the sky is clear.
Because he doesn't know. Not really.
Everything changed on The Day. The day the Icon appeared in Los Angeles. The day the power stopped. The day Dol's family dropped dead. The day Earth lost a war it didn't know it was fighting.
Since then, Dol has lived a simple life in the countryside with fellow survivor Ro-safe from the shadow of the Icon and its terrifying power. Hiding from the one truth she can't avoid.
They're different. They survived. Why?
When the government discovers their secret, they are forced to join faint-hearted Tima and charismatic Lucas in captivity. Called the Icon Children, the four are the only humans on Earth immune to the power of the Icons. Torn between brooding Ro and her evolving feelings for Lucas, between a past and a future, Dol's heart has never been more vulnerable. And as tensions escalate, the Icon Children discover that their explosive emotions-which they've always thought to be their greatest weaknesses-may actually be their greatest strengths.
Bestselling author Margaret Stohl delivers a thrilling novel set in a haunting new world where four teens must piece together the mysteries of their pasts-in order to save their future.

Gr 8 Up–Seventeen years ago, Dol's parents were among the billions killed on The Day. Since then, Dol and her best friend, Ro, have grown up in the Grasslands, protected and kept hidden in a peaceful mission. But things change on Dol's 17th birthday, when Embassy soldiers kill the Padre and capture Dol and Ro. Held captive by the Embassy's alien ambassador, the teens meet Lucas and Tima, both of whom have similar markings on their wrists as Ro and Dol. The four learn that they are Icon children who possess the supernatural ability to read and control emotions. Icons has a promising start, slows considerably in the middle, and gets only slightly more exciting by the end. “Top secret” and “Classified” documents appear between the chapters to provide necessary background information about the new alien-controlled planet. The four protagonists are difficult to care about. Two love triangles feel forced as only Ro seems to really feel anything for anyone else. The premise, while original, is confusing at times and requires infinite patience from readers, who will wonder far too long what the point is. For another alien-takeover story with excellent world-building, suggest Rick Yancey's The 5th Wave (Putnam, 2013).–Leigh Collazo, Ed Willkie Middle School, Fort Worth, TXα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Stohl’s dystopian California harbors a corrupt government, a teeming underclass who slave away in the Hole to serve that government, and the mysterious Icon children: individuals who survived a horrific alien attack on Earth that stopped all power sources and shut down cities all over the world. Why did Doloria, a Weeper, and Furo, a Rager, survive when everyone else in their cities perished? Dol and Ro, raised in the countryside by the padre of a deserted mission, have been kept in the dark as to the power of their uncontrollable emotions. Now 17, they are captured by the Embassy, jailed, and interrogated as the Ambassador and her henchmen try to harness their unique gifts. There they meet two other Icon children, one of whom happens to be the Ambassador’s son. Fans of Stohl’s Beautiful Creatures series will find many of the same elements here—paranormal romance, a fast pace, and intriguing characters—but within a distinctly science-fiction setting. The strong messages of questioning authority, daring to resist injustice, and loyalty to one’s group will resonate with teens who loved The Hunger Games. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Stohl is the best-selling coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures novels (the first one is about to become a major motion picture), and fans will be chomping at the bit for this one. YES! ICONS Is A Beautiful Read...

ICONS was an EPIC hit for me! I don't know if it's because I've been stuck in a romance/paranormal rut or because I just freaking love aliens, but I loved it. Read it in a day and a half. And then decided to re-read it to see if I felt the same emotional high. Thankfully, I did. Honestly, I had no clue how this book would turn out, nor what to expect from the characters. So I dove in, wide-eyed and patient. And let the narrative take me away. After the first chapter, I was HOOKED. DROWNED. Submerged by the connection between the main characters and the world they lived in. Most often, I was shocked, in love, teary-eyed, and over-the-moon. Every word breathed onto the pages drew me in and kept me there until I finished. And it is a looooong book. But gosh it was so WORTH it!
This novel is told from Dol's perspective. Though it is mostly about Dol, we also glimpse into the lives of Ro, Tima and Lucas. Each teenager is identifiable and very well written. At no point did I feel one character out shined the other. Each character had their own personal hardships and it was easy for me to fall in love with them for their personalities, struggles, and their constant need to survive. And how each chose to survive. Some made decisions that broke my heart and made me want to curl into a ball and cry myself to sleep. Others made decisions I loathed. But, I still rooted for them. Cheered them on until the last sentence. This shows the authors true talent. Making someone love characters they should hate, and root for two people to be together who shouldn't, is an amazing feat. And yes, there is a LOVE TRIANGLE. One that I actually cared for, though I'm still not certain which fantastic boy I want to win the girl. Both Ro and Lucas are great in their own way. Though Ro is just so dang beautiful on the inside. Neither is the "typical" swoon worthy character but in this type of setting and with their upbringing, it works in their favor. There is nothing I would change about them, and you'll see why if you read it.
Overall, I HIGHLY recommend ICONS to anyone looking for a Dystopian fix with a different style of characters. They are awkward at times, but they are lovable complex teenagers trying to survive in an unlivable world. The novel is VERY different. Rough around the edges with its own unique spark. Make sure you buy this one when it comes out May 7th. Trust me, you won't regret it!

Interesting story with a mix of Sci-fi/dystopian elements weaved in.
By Dark Faerie Tales
Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales.
Quick & Dirty: Interesting story with a mix of Sci-fi/dystopian elements weaved in. There was good action, but I had a hard time connecting to the characters.
Opening Sentence: One tiny gray dot, no bigger than a freckle, marks the inside of the baby's chubby arm.
The Review:
Doloria Maria de la Cruz is special -- she survived The Day. When she was a baby there was an attack on Earth from an extraterrestrial life form called the Icons. On that day the power stopped and over a billion people's hearts just stopped beating. Dol's whole family died that day but she didn't. Many years later she is living in the countryside, safe from the Icons and the people that now run the government. She lives there with her best friend Ro, who also survived that day.
The world is run by the Embassy and they have a contract with The Lords (the owners of the Icons) to provide people to build their projects. No one ever comes back from the projects and no one knows what The Lords are building. Soon after Dol turns 17 the Embassy comes for her and Ro. They are taken to Embassy headquarters where they meet Lucas and Tima. Turns out that all of them have some remarkable similarities and they know that there's a reason they are all brought together. They all have a different talent that made them more than human, and now they need to figure out why they are different and why they survived.
Dol is our main character and the story is told from her point of view. Dol can feel everyone's emotions and if she touches you she can see your memories and feel your thoughts. At times it is hard for her to control her power and it gets overwhelming for her. She is a very loyal and trusting person which gets her in trouble at times. Honestly, I didn't dislike Dol, but there really wasn't anything about her that really stuck with me. I feel like she was very forgettable and I didn't really connect with her on any level.
Ro has a hard time controlling his emotions. When he gets upset it is like he in on fire and he is unstoppable. He doesn't always have complete control of himself and he can be very dangerous. But he can ignite that feeling in others as well and get people really rallied up if he wants to. He has known Dol for pretty much their whole lives. They have always been friends but it has turned into something more for Ro. He really cares about Dol and would do anything for her. Dol also cares about Ro, but she doesn't know if she can be more than friends with him. I really don't see them ending up together, I felt that they lacked chemistry and they just didn't click for me.
Lucas is the son of the ambassador. His talent is that he is a charmer. He can get people to do whatever he wants and everyone loves him. You would think with someone that has that kind of influence they would use it to their advantage, but Lucas really tries not to. He doesn't want to manipulate others, and he really tries to be a good person. Because his mother runs the Embassy the other Icon children have a hard time trusting him. He starts to develop some feelings for Dol and I actually liked them together. I felt that they had some good tension and chemistry. The romance in this book did fall a little short for me. There were some cute moments but really nothing that gave me butterflies or got my heart beating a little faster, which disappointed me.
The last Icon Child is Tima. She is the master of fear. She uses fear and anxiety to motivate tactical perfectionism in battle, but she rarely will participate in any physical combat. She is a computer whiz and she happens to be totally gorgeous. She has had a thing for Lucas for a while now, but he doesn't seem to notice. She doesn't really like Dol or Ro when they show up but she eventually learns to respect them.
This was a good read, but at times I got a little bored with it. The idea was interesting and I enjoyed the world that Stohl created, but there were moments that dragged a little. I also had a hard time with the characters, none of them really stood out to me and they seemed easily forgettable. I did enjoy the story, there was pretty good action and some twists I wasn't expecting. Even though this book did have a lot of flaws, I still enjoyed it and I am looking forward to the next installment in the series. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys dystopian or sci-fi books.

a fresh take on dystopia
By Julie B
Icons is a fresh take on dystopia, enhanced by the well-woven sci-fi angle of the plot. And I well and truly enjoyed the read.
Now, let me just preface this by saying that Icons was one of those `slower' reads for me, though that's mostly due to absorbing the sci-fi elements mentioned above, as well as the world building, and the simple fact that I realised pretty early on that I just did not want to miss a single detail.
For that reason, I don't really care that this one took me quite a few days to get through, because I've thoroughly enjoyed every moment in this book.
I'd imagine a fair bit of that has to do with Ms Stohl's awesome ability to world build. Everything was just so well explained and described that there was simply no room for confusions--making the journey just ... smooth as honey.
But, more than that, I believe it was the amazing four characters that fast became the driving force of this well-woven tale. And although a certain two of them took me longer to `like', within time, I grew to love each and every one of them--I suspect at exactly the time the author intended me to.
So, let's take a quick look at each of those characters.
First up, Lucas. There was just something about this dude that made me trust him from the off. And then I didn't trust him. And then I did. I have a feeling this was done on purpose to keep the reader guessing. But it took me a long time to get a handle on this guy, and even then, I had him all wrong. But in a good way. Because I was very glad he turned out better than I'd expected him to.
Then we have Tima. She's an oddity. And that just makes her all the more intriguing. And what comes across as one thing when looking at the shell is something totally other when we get a glimpse at the inside. I loved the complicated-ness of her character. Loved how she turned out to be one of the strongest in the end.
Furo. *sigh* Furo is one awesome character. He's is so expertly portrayed that the reader has a complete reading on him from start to finish. He'll make you fall in love. With his faults. With his strengths. With his weaknesses. He'll make you fall in love with him. But he's another complicated soul, and I `feel' for him. Because not everything in life can turn out as you yearn for it to, and your heart will break alongside his, for sure.
And last, but by no means least, we have Doloria. She was a fabulous narrator to travel this read with. I loved her drive. Loved her passion. Her character. Her personality. Her connection with Ro (Furo). Her prominent goodness. Her `place' in the tale. Just everything about this MC suckered me right in and made me want to learn more. And not just about her, but about everyone and everything she came into contact with.
Aside from those four, we also have a couple of great side characters. Fortis was brilliant. Just brilliant. Full of mystery. Full of excitement. Sure, I kinda had my suspicions about his true `identity' before the reveal came, but that did little to diminish how much I enjoyed having it confirmed. And alongside Fortis, we have `Doc'. For something that isn't supposed to have a personality, he had a GREAT one. I loved his relationship with Lucas. And loved `watching' the unfolding of his part played and how he related to the bigger picture. There were other characters with smaller parts, who were just as vibrant and colourful, but too many to list. And each and every one of them added layers and depth to this story, as well as credibility where credibility should be lacking.
Okay then, onto the plot. I hate spoilers, so I'm not going to detail anything that happens in the book. If you want to know that, you'll have to read it for yourself. But I will say, in an intricately-woven plot such as this, there is so much leeway for threads to be left dangling, but there weren't any. As I already said, there was no room for confusions. Everything was so beautifully wrapped up and presented that I completed the book feeling wholly content, and with a warmth in my heart as though Doloria's character had somehow touched me, just as she `touches' so many within her world. And, whilst I won't mention spoilers, I feel the communication snippets that are included in the book between each of the chapters, where information is slowly leaked to the reader, but with no time stamps so the reader is left trying to piece it all together and how it ties in exactly to what's happening now, turn this novel into one big mystery waiting to be unravelled.
I'd never read anything by Margaret Stohl before Icons. I will definitely be picking up more of her books now, that's for sure.
