Hot Blooded Gave Me Hot Flashes!
By FangFreakinTastic Melanie
Once again, Amanda Carlson made me glad I let my husband talk me into reading a shifter book instead of a witch book!
In Hot Blooded we continue the story of Jessica McClain, the only full blooded female werewolf in existence. She is on a mission to save her honey, Rourke from the clutches of the evil goddess Selene, who not only wants to kill him, but have her way with him first. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'll tell you this much, if some chick kidnapped my honey and had plans like this for him, I'd be going after her too! Hot Blooded has a different feel to it than Full Blooded, but not necessarily in a bad way. It definitely feels like a nice bridge between Full Blooded and Cold Blooded, but not in a way that you should skip it. It's not by any means a filler book, like you occasionally find in long series. There are two main themes of this book: the locating and rescue of Rourke and all of this Prophecy business. Carlson does a great job of keeping us on track, while still filling us in or reminding the reader of things they may have missed or not been told in the first book.
In addition to the Cain Myth we learned about in Full Blooded, there is another prophecy that talks about a female "True Lycan" that will come to rule over the supernatural race and basically be judge, jury, and executioner of anyone who steps out of line. Obviously, some may not be too happy about that idea and have now made it their purpose to get rid of Jess before the Prophecy comes true.
You will find the same type of sarcasm and sense of humor that was in Full Blooded, which in my opinion helps make the characters feel more real. I love a heroine with a snarky attitude, that doesn't just fall into the seriousness of the plot. She still kicks butt despite the fact that nasty Selene placed a spell on her that should have some serious life threatening effects.
We are introduced to a set of vampire twins that act as trackers to help hunt down Selene in her secret lair. It was hard for me to decide if I liked them or not, but eventually you are given reason to feel one way or the other about them.
Jess's brother Tyler, and Danny accompany her on her quest and as usual Tyler is an overprotective brother. Danny is hilarious as usual and we also see a type of sensitivity about him that we did not see before. We also get to have a little bit more fun with Ray, Jess's favorite pain in the butt cop.
One of my favorite characters in this series is Juanita. She is Jess's neighbor. This chick is hilarious. She is always trying to flirt with the guys or feed someone. She always shows up when you would think she shouldn't be there, but for some reason, the guys accept it. Maybe it's her ample bosom that is mentioned or her Spanish accent. Maybe she's just that great of a cook. I really hope there is more to her story than we have learned so far because I would love to hear her tell it. Carlson has done a great job of capturing her accent in every scene in which she speaks and it cracks me up every single time!
There are some crazy crazy surprises in this book that I am really dying to talk about but for obvious reasons cannot. We encounter all sorts of interesting creatures along the path to rescue Rourke that I seriously doubt you will expect. The first creature she encounters when close to Selene's property is just plain nasty and I would not want to run into them anywhere.
The climax of the story is a good one. There is some good action and butt kicking. The end definitely sets you up for the next book with a pretty amazing cliffhanger that will leave you shaking your fist and cursing Amanda Carlson for leaving you hanging!
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is into werewolves and liked Full Blooded. If you haven't read the first book, go pick it up at the same time, so as soon as you finish it, you can go right into this one because you aren't going to want to wait for the action to continue!
I guess you could say this book is the GOAT'S pajamas. Kind of like "the CATS's pajamas", but with goats. I'm lame, I know, but there is only one way to find out what on earth I am talking about! It's awesome.

Amazing Addition to the Series!
By Larissa
**Minor Spoilers of Full Blooded
Hot Blooded starts off almost exactly where Full Blooded ended. Jessica is not only a target to many supernatural races, but her Mate was kidnapped by God who thinks she has the dibs on Jessica's man.
Now it's up to Jessica, Tyler, Danny, a human and two vamps to ride to the the rescue. If only it was that easy! If the journey doesn't kill them and if they survive the bitchy God's wrath, Jessica still has to deal with the deal she made with the Vamp Queen in order to get two Vamp trackers to help her.
Hot Blooded is another action-packed installment to the Jessica McClain series. The novel starts full-throttle and it doesn't let out until the very end.
We get so much Danny and Tyler goodness in Hot Blooded! They are such fantastic secondary characters. We also get a great surprise from the Vamp corner in the form of Naomi and let's not forget Jessica's dad Callum, always a treat!
We get very little of Jessica's Mate, but he is still as hot as ever and I cannot wait to read about him and Jessica spending more time together.
I am trying really hard to not spoil anything. Just know that Full Blooded was not a fluke, Hot Blooded was even better, if that's possible! I expect the Jessica McClain series to carve out an even bigger piece of my heart with every new novel! Thanks Amanda!

Following on the heels of the events from the first book in this series, Hot Blooded follows Jessica McClain. Jessica is the only known female werewolf, though you get hints to there being more to it. Why, yes... there is a prophesy involved. How'd you guess? Though, I have to say there was a lot more to this than the "Prophesy Girl" story line. (For those keeping score at home, that is one in the Buffy reference column.)
The book is solidly in the urban fantasy genre, even though the relationship between Jessica and the mate she is trying to save is one of the key elements to the story. There is more kick-assery here than is seen in most paranormal romance. More so than that, there was also the dealing with how her relationship is changing with her father, twin brother and pack now that she has been revealed as the first female werewolf in a number of generations. At the same time, this isn't an angsty story exploring "all the feels" as the kids say. It was all handled in a rather subdued way that worked for me.
As far as being a kick ass heroine goes, I think Jessica has a lot going for her. Sure, she has the power. There's the uniqueness of being the only female werewolf. Hell, that's without even getting into the prophesy nipping at her heels like a hyperactive chihuahua. What I see as standout from many of the "strong heroine" stories is that she is heading out on the quest to save her mate. He is the one at the mercies of the mad goddess and in need of saving. And even with this, he isn't the beta male. Rourke is one hell of a powerful badass in his own right, even if he was at disadvantage against the mad goddess Selene. Similar levels of power between the two of them bodes well for their interaction in future novels.
Overall a good amount of ass kicking, a fast paced novel and strong characters kept me from putting the book down. The mythology and world-building around the story peaked my interest for future installments. For not only keeping me at the coffee shop reading longer than I should have as well as having me looking forward to the next, I'm giving Hot Blooded...
