Artist DOUBLE-S made his Japanese manga debut with "Until Death Do Us Part."

Hiroshi Takashige is a manga writer who studied at Gekiga Sonjuku, a school for manga creators established by the legendary Kazuo Koike (Lone Wolf and Cub). Takashige is best known for his work in Spriggan and the long-running, critically acclaimed Until Death Do Us Part.

Action, but more character development in this volume

This volume begins where the last one ended, with Mamoru and Haruka surrounded by Wiseman's PCP fueled zombies and snipers ready to finish him off. As the short summary from the book suggests, they escape and Mamoru realizes that the only reason he is still alive is due to Haruka's intervention, and some timely help by Juliet and Igawa, from The Element Network, a crime-fighting network composed mostly of victims of criminal activity. Mamoru is angry that he had to rely on others and that Wiseman just toyed with him. Thus, he leaves his post and disappears, with Haruka following, for three weeks. (We learn what they did as Genda follows them to a sword master's home and in several flashbacks in this and future volumes.) Upon their return, we see that Igawa, Mamoru’s partner in earlier chapters, has been assigned a new partner, Dai Ibuki, who uses a motorcycle to aid his crime-fighting skills. The action with the motorcycle is really cool. For example, Ibuki can climb the walls of buildings with it. We also see how Haruka's fighting skills improved during the three week absence. Ibuki becomes jealous over the way everyone talks about how great a fighter Mamoru is and sets out to show that he is the more skilled of the two. This begins a running gag throughout future volumes, with Ibuki trying to land a punch on Mamoru only to fail and fall down stairs or suffer some other calamity. We also discover more about The Element Network and its Director, Tatsumi Daiba. One of the aspects of this volume that I most like is that it begins filling in the history of Mamoru. We learn the circumstance of why Officer Genda refers to Mamoru as a murder and a bit more of Genda's own history with him. As I mentioned in my title, there is more character development in this volume than in the past (We learn more about Juliet's past, for instance.), but that does not slow the action, which is almost nonstop from the first to last pages. I really like this series and recommend it to anyone who loves action and swordplay wrapped up in a good story.

I love this series... the storytelling is tight yet broad, especially when it begins to include the crossover characters here. As usually, the art is beautiful and enhances the story incredibly.

I started reading this series long before they had it translated to English and I was hoping they would bring it out in English. Then Yen Press brought it out and I was so happy!

I am still keeping up with the online updates but this is a series worth buying and it comes in 16 chapters or more in each volume. It is also worth it to keep reading over and over again. I have and always keep going back to read it again because of the action, storyline, and artwork.

It was awesome! I've been waiting so long for this!!!!! Ok the story is starting to move a little quicker. It does start off with a group trip to the hotsprings but the author says this was kind of a side story, sort of, but after that the Duras attack again! Or do they, a mysterious enemy appears and suspicious deaths have been happening,

I adore this series. The story, art, and characters are all very interesting and you immediately fall in love with them. I can't wait 'till the new volume!

I am loving this plot line and the twist and turns Odagiri makes with each character. I also applaud Yen Press for staying faithful to certain formalities in the Japanese culture and the translation is very good. Can't wait for the next book.

Great Volume

I am almost finished reading this book. It's and interesting storyline. I am anxious to see if Hotaru Odagiri brings Yuki and Luka back together even thought Yuki is a boy. There is a strong attachment and it would be nice if Yuki recognizes he loved and still loves Luka. This volume explained more about the past lives of the partners.

Anti-Modern And Excellent

First, a point for those who disparage Evelyn Waugh's books because he was an antediluvian Roman Catholic, a snob, and apparently a very nasty man.

No one can excuse the last item, and the penultimate is almost equally reprehensible, but as for his Catholicism ... well, I don't accept it (though I know it well, having been raised a Catholic in the late 1940s-early 1950s), but as an element in his vision of life it's no more objectionable than contemporary "hip" attitudes, or whatever term is now used. And "hipsters"--or whatever they're called--are horrible snobs and invariably cruel to the "unhip". Most importantly, none of them can write prose as memorably as Waugh, nor do they have much, if any, taste whatsoever for the glories of literature.

A generation that considers Bob Dylan a poet, Toni Morrison a novelist, and Rock as serious music isn't worthy to pass judgement on a great novelist like Waugh, even with all his failings.

MEN AT ARMS is the first book of the SWORD OF HONOUR trilogy. As with everything Waugh wrote, the prose is superbly judged, the yarn compelling, the humor outstanding, though this is not a typical Wavian satire, except in part.

It's actually the beginning of the tragic tale of Guy Crouchback, who deludedly thinks that the Second World War is a Crusade against evil (primarily the Soviet Union). Crouchback is naive but admirably so. He values civilization, even if in a distorted form, the lens of Catholic nonsense clouding his vision.

Hugh Kenner once said that Waugh was "the little man with the derby confronting the modern world" (in a commentary aired after the TV production of BRIDESHEAD REVISITED). One could say that Kenner's adulation of James Joyce and his ilk was another sort of confrontation: incoherence and aesthetic anarchy against sense and beauty.

Waugh deserves to be read in spite of his failings; James Joyce, at least after DUBLINERS, is a thesis topic for Kenner and company's seminars, fodder for a lot of academic studies that aren't worth publishing. If you like to read FINNEGAN'S WAKE, you need to avoid Evelyn Waugh like the plague, that's certain..

A great blend of sci fi and contemporary

The Originals is the first book I have read by Cat Patrick, and it will also not be the last. In this book, Lizzie, Ella, and Betsey take shifts impersonating Elizabeth. See they are identical in how they look, however they are not identical triplets but clones, from an original. Their mother, a genetic scientist, implanted them in her womb and ran away with them. Now, almost 17 years later, they have been at this for several years. You all wonder why they don't just act as triplets? it is because the top secret project that is them was actually leaked and triplets are looked at with a bit too much interest by the government.

This book, if it wasn't for the whole cloning, would have been marked as a contemporary. All three girls divide the day three way, Lizze and Ellie divide their school time halfway while Betsey goes to their part time job and night class at the local college. I loved the high school setting, since this is told from Lizzie's POV only, and also that there is none of the cliche high schooler plots, evil cheerleaders or douchey jocks. Actually, "Elizabeth" is part of the cheerleading squad! The story really kicks off when Lizze and Ellie start liking two different guys and have to find a way to be able to date them, even though in everyone else's eyes, they are just one person. Because the girls started becoming impatient and fed up with the way they're living, and also due to a coincidence, they find out that their mother has been lying to them, and hiding a few things that could change their lives. Lizzie starts snooping, while at the same time trying to see Sean without him seeing Ellie with her guy and thinking it's her. I loved the contemporary elements intertwined with the science fiction ones. We have a mystery of what really happened to make their mother leave her work and hide as well as for how long is she planning on keeping them on lockdown. I loved that the girls had the best friendship together, they each were so different and had their own unique personality. I really enjoyed that.

The plot was pretty fast paced, The Originals is around 300 pages but it felt so short because I was flipping the pages like crazy. Sean isn't just a love interest here but he actually was a big supporter for Lizzie. I appreciated the progression of their relationship and how it didn't feel insta love for me. The plot twist was actually very surprising for me and the ending was even more shocking. It was bittersweet but also very heartbreaking, an ending that made me close the book and just think about it for a minute or two. I would definitely recommend The Originals to Contemporary and Sci-Fi fans, as well as fans of Cat Patrick.

Interesting Idea

Three girls, one life. For the past decade Lizzie, Betsey and Ella have been sharing the life of Elizabeth Best. One taking the morning shift, one the afternoon and the final girl being the one to take the evenings. But Lizzie is sick of having their mother control their every move. Each taking a third of the same life with none of them getting to live their own life at all. But this is the way things have been for years and their mother says it's for their own protection - that no one can know they aren't sisters but rather clones. When Lizzie falls in love with Sean she doesn't want to share him with her sisters or be forced to "date" the boy their mother chose for them. So it's time to find out just who they're hiding from and what secrets their mother has been hiding from them...

The idea behind this book is brilliant. Ella, Betsey and Lizzie all sharing the one life and only being allowed to leave the house when their mother permits it. I've not read many books regarding clones and I loved how Cat Patrick approached the subject. I loved that the girls are the same and yet so completely different from each other.

Lizzie is a great narrator. She's sweet and trying to navigate life the best way she knows how. A bit difficult when you only get a few hours each day outside. But somehow Lizzie manages to fit in with society and set herself aside from her sisters. Sean is adorable but a little too accepting and perfect to be entirely real. Betsey and Ella are fantastic at supporting Lizzie and showing how their circumstances effect all three girls. I would have loved to have read parts of this book from the sister's perspectives but even just with Lizzie's thoughts this book is complete and interesting.

I loved how the characters grew throughout this book and how the plot developed as the girls learned more about where they came from and who they were. There's a lot of mystery and tension as things get revealed and secrets come out. Sean was a great catalyst for the triplets searching for the truth and their own lives. I felt a little let down by the ending but the build up and characters more than made up for it.

I've not read a Cat Patrick book before but after reading the Originals and enjoying her writing style - I'll be looking forward to reading her other books.

bad execution

I am very disappointed with this book. The plot sounded unique and amazing, but the execution of it didn't do it any justice at all.

I hated all of the characters. They are completely forgettable and two-dimensional. They lack logic at times. For example, their mom supposedly is trying to keep them hidden as well as possible because she fears that someone is still after them. Their mom wanted to protect them from anyone who may be hunting them down because she escaped her old lab with her three "daughters". The daughters got suspicious of her when they discovered that she's been doing something secretive. Instead of questioning her, they decided to act recklessly, which lead to more danger. Why? Just... WHY? Another illogical part of the book is the ending. The three girls are finally given their own identities. They sought their mom's old friend who is skilled in creating fake legal documents and identities in general. The solution is that the girls had to dye their hair and then the guy gave them the documents. So they never needed to share one life to begin with

The instant love in the book was also irritating. The protagonist basically collapsed right in the classroom when she saw Sean. What is it with YA books nowadays where the protagonist always end up unintentionally holding her breath or collapse when they see a nice looking guy?

Along with the romance, I don't like how the author handled the situation between Ella and her boyfriend. Lizzie, Ella, and Betsy have to all date the same boy since they share one identity, but only one of them actually go on dates with the boyfriend. That is not the problem. The girls decided that Ella would date the boy she liked. However, Lizzie wants to be with Sean. This is where the issue begins. Sean would often see Elizabeth (the girls' shared name) with Ella's boyfriend. Of course, that causes a conflict. To fix that, Lizzie tells Sean about her secret. That solves the problem with Sean. However, it's as if the author completely forgot about Ella's relationship. As a solution, readers find out out of the blue that Ella's boyfriend has been cheating on her

To sum it all up, I loved the plot of this novel, but it was poorly executed.

It's just OK.

Paolo Bacigalupi is one of my favorite contemporary writers of science fiction. I think that his _Pump Six and Other Stories_ is one of the most important collections of short SF work to come out in the past couple of decades. _The Windup Girl_ is an amazing novel, and I've read his YA titles (the _Shipbreaker_ series) with enormous pleasure. So when _The Doubt Factory_ came out, I snapped it right up, and I have to be frank: if you too like Bacigalupi's work, you may nonetheless want to give this book a miss.
Let me explain why. Bacigalupi has an extraordinary gift for making the reader worry (and reflect upon) problems in today's world by extrapolating those problems into the future, and then portraying characters native to that future -- usually naive or young characters -- in dramatic confrontations caused by those problems. In his previous work, this formula works extremely well because Mr. Bacigalupi is both a meticulous world-builder and a rollicking good storyteller. But _The Doubt Factory_ is different. This is not a dystopian future, but the present portrayed in a dystopian light -- and not through world-building, but by long passages of quasi-journalistic exposition. And it is not a rollicking good tale; I found it rather to be quite flat, with most of the drama driven by a disappointingly cliched teenage romance. Not much _happens_ throughout long stretches of this book.
All this is a shame, because I couldn't agree more with Mr. Bacigalupi's message: that we must defend ourselves as a society against those who would use "junk" science as a tool to prop up corporate gains at the expense of the public good. It's just that this rather dry novel is not an effective vehicle for this message.

Paolo Bacigalupi is one of my absolute favorite modern writers

Paolo Bacigalupi is one of my absolute favorite modern writers. The Windup Girl was genre-definingly good, the Drowned Cities books are complex and mature YA lit, and I've read through Pump Six probably five times. I barely made it halfway through The Doubt Factory before I gave up and moved on to another book. Part of the brilliance of Bacigalupi's other writing is that his characters' actions are relatable and his worlds are believable even when they are extreme sci-fi. The Doubt Factory is set firmly in the real world, and it is less convincing that even the strangest settings that Bacigalupui creates in his other work. The protagonist has inexplicable changes of heart every other chapter, and the other characters never make any sense to begin with. You will miss nothing if you skip this book.

Oh, Paolo, what have you done?

I have liked Paolo Bacigalupi's previous novels. This one left me wondering what he was thinking. It reads like it was written by someone else. Maybe a younger Paolo. Maybe this is an early work that's been sitting in the bottom of a drawer for a long time, and was taken out, updated a bit, and tossed to the publisher. Whatever the case, it just isn't up to the standard of Bacigalupi's previous books.

I found the characters to be flat and uninteresting, the plot unoriginal and slow-moving, and the writing stilted and repetitive. I decided at one point that I would start a drinking game and take a shot every time someone mentioned Stockholm syndrome. But that wouldn't have gotten me wasted enough to make it through the novel. So I changed it to every time someone was talking... and their voice trailed off.

Don't waste your time and money on this. Read (or re-read) The Windup Girl instead.

Fantasy with historical fiction influence

As a fan of historical fiction (such as Bernard Cornwell or Christian Cameron) I have often thought that these writers would make excellent fantasy authors. As I began reading The Red Knight (TRK), I found myself feeling like I had stumbled across just such a work- as the world itself, the details, and the way the story was told seemed closer to historical fiction than standard fantasy. I found out that although this is the first book by Miles Cameron, the author has in fact been writing historical fiction under another name.

Having now finished TRK, it is exactly the kind of fantasy story I have been hoping for. It is full of (many) complex characters with villains and heroes alike being fleshed out individuals with good and bad qualities, a genuine understanding of the real medieval world which makes the fantasy world of the story come across as being alive and realistic, a well thought out magic system, and some of the best action (and lots of it) you will read in any fantasy series.

Lastly, the story is part of a projected five book series, but wraps up nicely concluding the main story line while leaving some questions and hints towards where the story may go in the future. If you've been burnt by George R.R. Martin, or other fantasy authors who leave you hanging between books, TRK will leave you satisfied but looking forward to more.

Gripping, realistic fantasy

Characters: The Red Knight features a wide cast of characters, with each chapter giving us a different point of view. Our primary point of view is the Red Knight himself, a young mercenary commander. The Red Knight might be young, but he knows his business. I don't put spoilers in my reviews, so I'll just mention that there is more to the Red Knight than (of course) first meets the eye. Besides the Red Knight we have a rich cast of characters, including the novel's primary antagonist. I enjoyed getting both the "good guy" AND "bad guy" point of views.

World building: This had to be one of my favorite elements of the novel. Cameron has taken Europe (circa 1450, I estimate) and tuned it to his own fantasy setting. You'll recognize names and places from European history, some straight out of the history books, some given interesting twists. The book combines the author's deep knowledge of history with a truly refreshing, well thought out overlay of magic and fantastic monsters (some you'll recognize, some you won't). It is a gritty, highly realistic setting.

Engagement/Willing suspension of disbelief: Cameron is a historian and a reenactor. Both come through in spades when it comes to engagement. Small details of everyday life create a rich, believable atmosphere. And Cameron certainly knows how to write a gripping combat scene. Knights in other fantasy novels wear the same armor, but in the Red Knight you really get to know what is means to be in a full suit of plate. It is obvious that the author has spent his fair share of time in full harness.

Writing/Mechanics: The Red Knight is a professionally written novel. Besides getting an exciting story, you are getting a well-written story. It is not all blood and guts, Cameron takes time to smell the roses. Love and hate, the nature of good and evil, the meaning of loyalty and friendship... Cameron writes them as well as he writes a deadly battle with a wyvern.

Impact: A terrific fantasy novel. It isn't a YA fantasy, this is a tough, realistic telling of a bloody war in a fantasy setting. It also isn't a Dungeon's and Dragons knock off - which is a great relief. It has the depth, complexity and realism of GRR Martin in a world where magic and monsters are more the norm. I can't wait for more.

From Bang to Whimper

This is a tough review to write because I both enjoyed and hated the Red Knight, and I wavered between 2-3 stars for a while before finally making up my mind. In essence, this is a rather simple story about a mercenary company contracted to defend an abbey from an enemy army of the Wild (think wyverns and trolls and the like.) Cameron tries to layer this simplistic plot with some complexity towards the end but it's ultimately not too much deeper than my one sentence summary. And while that may sound like a bad thing (especially if you're a fan of Erickson or GRRM's behemoth plots) I was hopeful that Cameron would use this as a way to build up a really compelling cast of characters on both sides of the conflict.

Does he succeed? Well, yes and no. I did like several main characters including the titular Red Knight whom other reviewers seemed to have an issue with, and a knight named De Vraily who is so rabid with his faith and arrogance that he was always a fun point of view. But my overall impression about Cameron's characterization was that it fell rather flat. A large part of this has to do with his love of viewpoints and the back and forth, back and forth, shift from one character to another was tiresome (to say the least) at the end of all 600 pages. Instead of using this mechanism as GRRM or Abercrombie do- i.e. to build up several really strong narrative voices- Cameron does it more for the effect. It's even more problematic because the point of views themselves are only a couple of paragraphs to a couple of pages long. Instead of devoting an entire chapter to a character, we're left pinballing between 5-20 of them in any given chapter which is...well...dizzying. And ultimately pointless without more investment in characterization.

But quite possibly the biggest disappointment is Cameron's villain, Thorn. This character is a train wreck. For starters, despite cramming the book full details on weapons and armor, we're never given a clear picture of what Thorn actually looks like. We get some hints scattered throughout and we certainly get a sense of his size, but other than that he remains much of a physical enigma. Additionally, Cameron makes it a point for his heroes to continually warn each other about how clever and powerful Thorn is but this turns out to be an EXTREME case of the author taking the lazy way out. There's nothing at all, either in Thorn's multiple point of views or in his actions, that even support these claims. Half the time, the big bad villain sounds more like a whiny, frightened, child and for being such a towering intellect, he actually ends up getting outsmarted quite a lot. By the end, I was sick of this guy. He wasn't frightening, menacing, or even compelling. He was petulant, poorly written, and always seemed to be two steps behind his opposition. When I wasn't busy rolling my eyes at his newest point of view, I actually began to feel a bit sorry for him: he seemed so pathetic it was almost laughable.

So the characterization is hit and miss, but more miss than hit. What about the action? The battles? Does Cameron deliver there? Again, this is a yes and no answer. There are certain fights that are brilliantly written. I really liked the first couple of encounters the Captain has with the Wild because he was fighting things like daemons and wyverns for the first time and Cameron did a fantastic job of making them feel like 'big boss battles.' Each was dangerous and each was novel and they were a lot of fun to read. But when we actually got into the meat of the war- the big battle which is really more of a siege- I just lost interest. The problem is that the vast majority of the book (all 600 pages) is one battle after another after another and it's not like they're poorly written, it's just that they're repetitive. Once we get over the shock of the wyverns and the trolls, most of the time it's just repeated skirmishes with foot soldiers (like the silly named boglins) who die in the hundreds over and over again. Cameron never found a way to keep this kind of thing interesting. The setting never changed, the foes never changed, the same characters lived through fight after fight, the viewpoints remained insipid, and the whole story just lost momentum.

Another reviewer called this book 'endless' and I have to agree. From a really promising beginning, we get a slow degeneration into repetition and neither the characters nor the action were enough to keep me invested. Cameron does have his good moments buried in this book, but like his knights cutting though wave after wave of boglins, you're going have to do some serious work to slog your way through this this one.

The Spirit Thief (The Legend of Eli Monpress) is the first book in the collection, it starts off with a rather amusing conversation between a man and a prison cell door. Normally this would not only be amusing, but a rather one sided conversation expect for the quickly explained fact that he this man is a wizard. There are many kinds of wizards as you know, being the vague term that it is. Some summon demons, others ride trains and go to school to learn to fling wands about without doing collateral damage.

Well this man is the type of wizard who can talk to things and really anything for that matter. Swords, fire, bricks, trees, winds, birds, and as mentioned, doors. So being a wizard really only means that your options for company are much larger than a normal person. Well that and you can bargain with or force things to do your bidding. So when you can sweet talk a door into letting you out, they become much less effective as obstacles.

We quickly discover that this man's name is Eli Monpress and that he's a wanted thief and proud of it. What he steals next is a little out of the ordinary for him and is in fact the king of whose dungeon he had been spending the morning in.

This is where the second main character comes in. A young lady named Miranda from the Spirit Court, a magical law enforcement / environmental protection organization. She's come to capture Eli and ensure he doesn't steal some magical relic. To be honest, she's rather annoying at first but I think that's the point. The embodiment of all that is good and right with a short tempter. The hero that will rant to the villains on their evilness in the middle of combat. But its clearly apart of her character growth as you continue. So she arrives to find the king gone and begins the hunt for Eli and his odd crew.

It is soon revealed that nor Eli or Miranda are the antagonists but more like different sides to the same coin, constantly flipping in hopes to end up on top. Ransoms are demanded, traps set and a mercenary with homicidal sword hired, all while the true villain pulls the strings from the sidelines.

The main problem with Spirit Thief is that, as far as world and plot, you barely get your feet wet. Its more a prequel to the other books than the first and beyond character interest, doesn't give you much reason to keep going but you'll understand the world rather well by end. That's why this 3 book edition works so well, because you already have the other two.

So you'll find that in book #2 and #3 the plot thickens to a fate of the world story and by the end each character, even the ones you'd label as henchmen #2 in book one are now perhaps more important than their leaders in a way.

The plot is a bit thin in places but you really read this series for lovable characters, adventure and classic sense of magic. You're given information just enough to keep you happy but never as much as you like keeping you constantly hungry for more.

I must mention that the audiobook versions (Spirit Thief, Spirit Rebellion and Spirit Eater) are also great fun and well narrated.

Great Buy of Great Series

The is one of the best series I've read in years. I've reviewed the other three books so first I'll say this is an amazing series that everyone should read. Here are my reviews of the first three books in the series (what you get in this wonderful omnibus.)

The Spirit Thief

Magic, mystery, and a little bit of good old thievery. All in all Rachel Aaron's first book in her The Legend of Eli Monpress series is a truly fantastic book.

I'm a little embarrassed to say I didn't initially recognize this book as the fantastic piece of literature it is. In fact I probably would have missed it, if not for the fact that Orbit produced it.

What I mean by this is that since starting this blog I've learned a lot more about the publishing industry, such as, who produces the best urban fantasy/ fantasy/science fiction, who releases books at a speed that can keep a reader happy, and who is the most consistent with the level of production they put out. And from all of this I have to say Orbit is one fine imprint. They release great books in time periods to keep readers happy, they are one of the most consistent imprints in the level of high quality material that they publish, and they're constantly trying to make things cheaper and more affordable for the reader. But anyway enough about how fantastic Orbit is, the real crux of the matter is that I would have passed by this fantastic book without even knowing it, and that would have been the real crime.

The Spirit Thief is fun, well written, and full of well developed characters. Aaron does a fantastic job creating a story around this first chapter of the Eli Monpress series. She introduces just enough mystery to reel the reader into the next book, while maintaining an engaging action packed plot that will keep you up late into the night.

Not only is the plot well developed and intricate enough to entice readers to the next in the series, but the characters are all interesting and robust. None of the characters are bland or black and white, and even the minor characters are given enough great dialog to keep the story moving and entertaining. My personal favorite characters thus far in the series are Josef and Gin who are both strong, slightly sarcastic, interesting characters, who like almost all the characters in this series are filled with just a little bit of suspense and mystery about their back stories.

The Spirit Rebellion

It's often hard to keep the same level of action and mystery in the second book of a series. This has to do with the author having to create a new situation to capture the reader's attention while at the same time stringing the reader along in the central mystery to the series arc without giving away to much. It's hard and it's complicated, but if you can get it just right it can put the series just in the right spot to really take off.

In The Spirit Rebellion, Rachel Aaron does a terrific job of introducing readers to an exciting new situation that brings back all your favorite characters. Miranda gets put into a pickle when political action starts playing against her and she soon finds herself tossed out of the organization she's given her life to protect. Nico is forced to confront the realities of her situation as a demonseed. Josef must face his connection with the Heart of War. And Eli walks into a blatant trap he may not be able to get out of this time.

Like The Spirit Thief, Aaron does a great job maintaining both fun dialog and complex characters, but what I found most interesting about The Spirit Rebellion was the back story and cliffhanger like ending that Aaron introduces in this sensational sequel. Readers really get to see a new side to Eli, as we get a glimpse into his past, but most intriguing is the relationship with Benehime, who plays a fascinating yet small character in this book. It's obvious to readers she is going to play a much bigger role in books to come, but it's very exciting to watch her story and relationship with Eli unfold.

Of course, while I wont say what the cliffhanger like ending entails, I will say that it sets up an engaging plot for the next book in the series, The Spirit Eater, that I'm pretty sure I wont be able to put down.

All in all The Spirit Rebellion is a great book. The characters are witty and robust, the plot is intricate and just starting to bloom, and the book as a whole contains action, suspense, and magic in just the right proportions to allow the book to move at an exhilarating pace. Making The Spirit Rebellion a fantastic second book in the Legend of Eli Monpress series.

The Spirit Eater

I've been watching White Collar lately and I have to say Eli Monpress is exactly like Neal Caffrey from the show. He is charismatic, driven, and the best thief in the world. And these are just a few of the reasons why the Legend of Eli Monpress series is now one of my favorite series out there.

The Spirit Eater opens with Nico's past as the Daughter of the Demon Mountain a few years before, and then quickly turns to the present with Nico focused on fighting back against the demon inside of her as it's suddenly grown more powerful in the last few months.

Of course like The Spirit Rebellion, The Spirit Eater seems to focus on pieces of the characters pasts as it revolves around the present. In this case it happens to revolve around Nico's past. Readers learn more about demons in this book and Eli's mysterious powers, but most interesting is that readers will get a taste of the greater mystery of the book, the overarching plot point that will become the motivation for books to come.

All in all, like the rest of the Legend of Eli Monpress series The Spirit Eater is not a book to be missed. The characters are fun and well written, the plot is exciting and full of surprises and action, and the mystery only gets deeper and darker as readers are sucked into the deeper questions surrounding the series. While some of the issues such as some of the new characters introduced seem a little less developed, the older more reliable characters more than make up for the flaws. All in all a great book and I personally can't wait for the next book, The Spirit War, to come out.

Fun, But Cluttered

These are the sorts of breezy, fun books that make for perfect lazy afternoon reading. The only downside to them is that they have a serious exposition issue. It seems like every other page the action halts for literal PAGES of descriptions of the way politics, magic, or some other thing works. I mean, of course you want to get some world building in there, and Eli's world IS interesting, but when so many of the explanations are so long-winded and tedious and FREQUENT, it really drags the story down. It's not handled with any subtlety at all, often coming in at inappropriate times, and I wanted to groan whenever it happened. "This is a really important mission we're on... but why don't you give me an eight-paragraph explanation of how this magic doo-dad that will never pop up again works?" It gets in the way of the characters, and strips out a lot of the mystery and enchantment that the world could and should have, and it happens all. The. Time. And is often nowhere near as interesting as the characters themselves. The Legend of Eli Monpress could be a lot better than it is, and although it didn't grab me and I found myself forgetting about it for days at a time, it's still a light, enjoyable read.

A Masterpiece!

This is about as close to perfection as anything gets in this world! I have been writing and illustrating children's books for over thirty years, so I'm in a position to know. Peter Brown's "Mr. Tiger Goes Wild" may be the most exquisite example of a picture book I've ever seen. It's like a Master Class of the form. First, there's the story, which has the feel of a classic Little Golden Book -- playful, sweet, with a nice message. For most books that would be enough, but it doesn't stop there. The art is gorgeous. But it doesn't stop there. The pacing is flawless, with the wordless spreads just as significant as the text pages. Then, there's the placement of the type itself -- even "The End" is right where it should be. But it doesn't stop there. Fold back the dust jacket and you get a nice surprise that also conveys the theme of the story. I am in awe! If this doesn't win the Caldecott, nobody knows what they're doing anymore -- except, of course, for Peter Brown!

I adore this book.

This book arrived at just the perfect time last night! I was getting my 9 year-old son ready for bed and heard the doorbell. I quickly opened the box and handed it to him to read, though I purchased it to use in my teaching internship with Kindergarteners. It was through his first reading that I realized how absolutely perfect the book is. The pacing was spot on. The wordless pages occurred at just the right time. The muted colors and the bold, bright orange of Mr. Tiger add so much to the story. The illustrations do a superb job of serving the purpose that I believe they should in a children's book: to enhance the story. The story itself is so simple and lovely, and it says a lot that an almost 10 year old can enjoy it, even though I believe the intended audience is 4-8. I have read and re-read Mr. Tiger Goes Wild many times today and notice something new in the illustrations each time. So lovely! A perfect addition to a home library as well as a great resource to use in early childhood classrooms.

Four legs good, two legs bad!

Here’s a fun exercise to liven up a gloomy day. Find yourself a copy of the picture book “Mr. Tiger Goes Wild”. Now turn to the publication page. It’s the green one opposite the title page at the beginning of the book. Now scroll down until you find the Library of Congress subject headings for this title. The very first one reads, “Self-actualization (Psychology)”. I am no cataloger, nor do I particularly mind it when they attribute terms of this sort to picture books, but anyone can see that this is a pretty amusing way to describe a book about a tiger with issues with civilization. It is rare to find a picture book this easy to love on sight, but author/illustrator Peter Brown is beginning to perfect his form. Hard to believe that the man who started out with “Flight of the Dodo” and “Chowder” has figured out how one goes about writing and illustrating modern day classics. With influences as diverse as Rousseau and 1960s Disney animators, Brown creates a wholly believable universe in a scant number of pages. Now prepare to turn said pages over and over and over again.

No one expected Mr. Tiger to be such a troublemaker. At first he was like everyone else. Sporting starched collars and silk top hats. Attending dignified tea parties and engaging in the usual chitchat about the weather that day. But Mr. Tiger is bored. “He wanted to loosen up. He wanted to have fun. He wanted to be… wild.” But wildness is not tolerated in the city, a fact Mr. Tiger discovers when his explorations into wildness involve pouncing across the rooftops, roaring in public, and going au naturel. It’s that final sin that has him dismissed from the city to the wilderness, where he gets to completely let go. It’s great for a time, but soon Mr. Tiger misses his friends and his home. When he returns he finds more comfortable clothes and the fact that the people there have loosened up a bit themselves, thanks in no small part to his influence.

Now I know there are folks out there for whom “The Curious Garden” is the top of the pops and Brown will never be able to make anything that good again. And that was a very nice book, no question but here is a book where Brown has hit his stride. First off, he has tackled the old anthropomorphic animal question; If you put a tiger in a suit, is he even a tiger anymore? Kids are very used to seeing animals wearing clothes and fulfilling human roles. I’ve always said that if you ever want to write a book about adults for kids, all you need to do is turn those adults into furry woodland creatures (hey, it worked for “Redwall”!). The idea that an animal might want to return to its wilder roots is a novel one for them. Imagine if Donald Duck tore off his sailor suit to peck at bread on the water, or Mickey Mouse removed those red shorts and started hunting down some cheese rinds. It’s almost, but not quite, obscene. Brown taps into that seeming obscenity, and uses it to give kids a mighty original tale.

2013 was a very good year for picture books with wordless two-page spreads. When used incorrectly, such spreads stop the action dead. Used correctly, they make the child reader stop and think. In a particularly “Miss Rumphius”-ish two-pager, Mr. Tiger walks alone in a wide-open field. He isn’t prancing or running or leaping anymore. His expression is utterly neutral. It’s just him and the flowers and the scrub bushes. Little wonder that when you turn the page he’s lonely once more. Brown uses this spread to bridge the gap between Mr. Tiger’s catharsis and his desire for company. Without it, the sudden shift in mood would feel out-of-character.

It’s hard to find folks who dislike this book but occasionally one comes out. The only real criticism I’ve seen of it was when I heard someone complain that Brown’s style is just like a lot of books coming out these days, particularly those of Jon Klassen. Hardly fair, though you can see what they mean when you hold this up next to “This Is Not My Hat”. But Brown is quite capable of manipulating his own style when he sees fit. Compare this book to others he’s made and you’ll see the difference. The noir feel of “Creepy Carrots” or the folksy faux wood border of “Children Make Terrible Pets” are a far cry from Mr. Tiger’s Rousseau-like setting. Brown has culled his influences over the years, and in this particular book he flattens the images purposefully, emulating the backgrounds of 1960s Disney films like “Sleeping Beauty”. The colors here are particularly deliberate. There’s the orange of Mr. Tiger (and his speech balloons), the green of the wilderness, and the orange of the sun. Beyond these and the blue of Mr. Tiger’s new shirt and the water of the fountain/waterfall, the palette is tightly controlled. And that doesn’t feel like anyone’s choice but Mr. Brown’s.

Another criticism I encountered came from someone who felt that the ending didn’t make sense to them. The animals all criticize Mr. Tiger then emulate him in his absence? But I have read and reread and reread again this book to my 2-year-old enough times that I know precisely how to answer such questions. Look closely and you’ll see that while some animals are very vocal in their disapproval of Mr. Tiger’s free-to-be-you-and-me ways, others are less perturbed. For example, in one scene Mr. Tiger is leaping from rooftop to rooftop. As he does so a bevy of onlookers comment on his actions. True, a bear shakes his fist and declares the tiger to be “Unacceptable” but look at the rhino and bunny. One is saying “Wow” and one “Hmm.” Then there’s the nude sequence (perhaps the only picture book centerfold shot in the history of the genre). First off, the pigeons are riveted. I loved that. And yes, a bunch of animals are pointing out of town, indicating that he should leave. But there’s a young fox that is absolutely enthralled by his actions, you can tell. It’s clear he has a far-reaching influence. I wasn’t surprised at all by the changes in his absence then.

Every child is a battlefield. In them rage twin desires, compelling in different ways and at different times. One desire is for the wildness Mr. Tiger craves. To run and yell and just go a little wild. The other desire is for order and organization and civilization. What “Mr. Tiger Goes Wild” does so well is to tap into these twin needs, and then produce a kind of happy medium between them. To entirely deny one side or another (or to entirely indulge one side or another) is an unhealthy exercise. We’ve not many books that touch on the importance of balance in your life, but let me just say that the lesson Mr. Tiger learns here would probably be greatly appreciated by large swaths of the adult population. Kiddos aren’t the only ones that chafe under their proverbial starched collars. A grand, great book with a lot of very smart things to say. Listen up.
