Lovin' It!
By Charles
The moment I started reading this manga (it was up to volume 16 at the time) I was instantly hooked. When I heard about a lot of manga collections being turned into omnibus editions I was glad to see this one made the cut. 400+ pages of pure badassery, recommended!

The sage continues...
By Antoine Wright
Mamoru aka "Blade", resumes his mission in protecting Haruka, the young girl that has the ability to see the future. But this time, things are becoming more hectic as the entire underground is after her. A separate organization joins the Element Network, to protect the girl and ensure Blade isn't a major threat. More characters join the fray, and things heat up when a new villain is introduced to take down Blade. This manga is just as good as the first, if not better. Sit back, relax, and enjoy some slice-n-dice action.

How can you talk about something that you can't remember?
Before the ski trip, Cassidy "Sid" Murphy was a cheerleader (on the bottom of the pyramid, but still...) and a straight-A student, with two of the best friends a girl could ask for.
When Sid finds herself on a ski lift with hunky local college guy, Dax Windsor, she's thrilled. "Come to a party with me," he tells her, but Dax isn't what he seems. He takes everything from Sid-including a lock of her perfect red curls--and she can't remember any of it.
After the ski trip, Sid is an insomniac and an obsessive late-night runner, unable to relate to her old friends.
Caught in a downward spiral, Sid drops her college prep classes and takes up residence in the A/V room with only Corey "The Living Stoner" Livingston for company. But as she gets to know Corey--slacker, baker, total dreamboat--Sid finds someone who truly makes her happy. Now, if only she could shake the nightmares, everything would be perfect...
Witty and poignant, Colleen Clayton's debut is a stunning story of moving on after the unthinkable happens

From Booklist
It all starts innocently enough: Cassidy Sid Murphy and her two best friends head off on a much-anticipated school ski trip. But when Sid meets handsome, older Dax Windsor while waiting in line for the ski lift, she can’t believe he’d be interested in a girl with crazed red hair and a bubble butt. She sneaks off to his place the following night and wakes up the next morning with no memory of what happened and her sweater on inside out. Instead of telling her friends and mom about the date rape, she spins lies and literally runs from the truth—sometimes up to six hours a day. When she meets Corey Livingston, a so-called druggie, Sid learns to see beyond his reputation, and, as they fall for each other, he lovingly pushes her into some tough conversations. While Clayton’s debut perhaps tackles a few too many issues (including Sid’s eating disorder), the final chapters—which focus on Corey and Sid’s authentically realized relationship—will move readers, as Sid starts to reclaim her sexuality and begin the painful process toward healing. Grades 9-12. --Ann Kelley

Review
* "Equal parts endearing spunk and heartbreaking vulnerability, Sid Murphy is a character who feels more like family by story's end. The story-and even more importantly, Sid herself-will stay with readers long after the final page is turned. Kudos to Clayton for crafting a powerful, moving debut."―Kirkus (starred review)

"Debut author Clayton doesn't simplify Sid or her emotions... painfully realistic yet hopeful."―PW

"Girls will see themselves or someone they know in this thought-provoking story as it gets passed from friend to friend."―SLJ

"Colleen Clayton's characters stuck with me long after I finished reading this great debut novel."―Lucy Christopher, Printz Honor Winning author of Stolen

"Real teenagers. Real issues. Real writing...Heartbreaking, but still filled with hope and promise, author Colleen Clayton knows that the past can't be rewritten, but you can ruin the future by not learning from it."―Holly Goldberg Sloan, author of I'll Be There

"I haven't been this in love with a set of characters in maybe forever...This book is for every girl who thinks she's got everything under control, for every girl who thinks rape can't happen to her, and for every girl who thinks she knows how she would respond to the worst. May we all have a bit of Sid in us -- smart, strong, spunky, and ultimately aware that we can't do it all on our own."―Jennifer Brown, author of Hate List, Bitter End, and Perfect Escape

"Sad, funny, and true, this book hits all the right notes"―Miranda Kenneally, author of Catching Jordan and Stealing Parker

Do you trust me....
By Tough Critic Book Reviews
This book started out being one of thousands. A girl experiences a devastating life changing event. She suffers the effects by alienating her friends and becoming a shadow of her former self. A tragic story that portrays the harsh realities of high school. It was incredibly well written, but I kept thinking..."This has been done, what makes this book unique?"

Colleen Clayton answered my question by developing a story that invaded my thoughts, my emotions, and has me down on my knees begging for a sequel! I'm not going to lie, the first half of the book was a bit slow. I felt like the story wasn't going anywhere...it was stuck, but patience is a virtue my friends and thank God I wore my virtue today!

I can't even begin to put into words what I felt for Corey. He not only won my heart, but everything attached to it. I guarantee that he'll steal your heart too and I promise you won't ask for it back.

Books have their imperfections, What Happens Next is no different, but the author gave me something that erased all things short of perfect and delivered something so powerful.

I think the turning point was when the relationship between Cassidy and Corey really began to develop. The last few chapters were...are...they were...EPIC. Yes, I used the word epic. I loved everything about them except the very, very end. I needed more (God, please tell me there's more). I wish the beginning was less and the end was more, but I'm left with an appreciation and a gratefulness that I was able to experience this amazing book. Please trust me on this. Push through the imperfections to be left with a story that invades your heart and touches the soul. READ ON!!!

Sid Murphy Stuck With Me
By Traci Von D
Clayton's vision of teen angst is spot on. I am far removed from the halls of high school, but I couldn't put this book down. It wasn't long before I knew Sid and started rooting for her. Friends, young love, great music and tough topics make this debut novel a rising star. I started reading slower the closer I came to the end because I didn't want to close the book on Sid. I suspect it won't be long before Colleen Clayton is a household name. For me, Judy Blume was the young-adult author of my generation. This generation will have Clayton.

Contemporary, and Heartbreaking...
By This Girl Reads A Lot
Contemporary, heartbreaking, and devestatingly real. I felt moved to tears. I'll be thinking about this book..for a long time.

The plot would at first seem similar to other novels but the author expertly weaves a tale from a character who seems just like "you," the girl you know but whose story you don't."

This story broke and warmed my heart. The characters were shockingly relatable. I felt like I knew them...personally. You couldn't help but fall in love with them.

It is this realization that you can go through something extremely tragic and persevere. You don't have to let everything that's wrong take away everything that's right and if you do you can always go back. That's what you take away from this book.

I'm so glad to have read it.

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle--and people in general--has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.

To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence--creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter's role in an absurd world.

Review
"Comedy heaven.... This divinely funny, many-faceted novel...leaves convention behind. Instead, it plays to Ms. Semple's strengths as someone who can practice ventriloquism in many voices, skip over the mundane and utterly refute the notion that mixed-media fiction is bloggy, slack or lazy.... The tightly constructed WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is written in many formats-e-mails, letters, F.B.I. documents, correspondence with a psychiatrist and even an emergency-room bill for a run-in between Bernadette and Audrey. Yet these pieces are strung together so wittily that Ms. Semple's storytelling is always front and center, in sharp focus. You could stop and pay attention to how apt each new format is, how rarely she repeats herself and how imaginatively she unveils every bit of information. But you would have to stop laughing first."―Janet Maslin, The New York Times

"You don't have to know Seattle to get Maria Semple's broadly satirical novel.... Underlying the nontraditional narrative are insights into the cost of thwarted creativity and the power of mother-daughter bonds, although a reader may be having too much fun to notice."―O, The Oprah Magazine

"Delightfully droll.... Semple...cuts a wry slice of a life-one that's populated by private school helicopter parents, obsessively eco-conscious neighbors, and green-juice swilling, TED-talking husbands-and one that's sharp enough to make us feel slightly relieved about not having to live anywhere quite so bucolic."―Megan O'Grady, Vogue

"The characters in WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE may be in real emotional pain, but Semple has the wit and perspective and imagination to make their story hilarious. I tore through this book with heedless pleasure."―Jonathan Franzen, author of Freedom

"There's a lot to like in Semple's charming novel, including the vivacious humor and the lesson that when creative forces like Bernadette stop creating, they become 'a menace to society.' Even more appealing is the mutually adoring mother-daughter relationship at its warm heart."―Heller McAlpin, NPR

"In her second novel...Semple pieces together a modern-day comic caper full of heart and ingenuity....a compelling composite of a woman's life-and the way she's viewed by the many people who share it. As expected from a writer who has written episodes of Arrested Development, the nuances of mundane interactions are brilliantly captured, and the overarching mystery deepens with each page, until the thoroughly satisfying dénouement."―Publisher's Weekly (Starred Review)

"A comedic delight..."―Family Circle

"Agoraphobia and Antarctica are among the elements in Maria Semple's terrific novel."―Parade

"Semple's affecting characters, not-necessarily-nice humor and surprising plot twists make this novel an enchanting ride."―Carolyn Kellogg, Los Angeles Times

"...Warm, dark, sad, funny-and a little bit screwball.... This is an inventive and very funny novel that gets bonus points for transcending form."―Susan Coll, The Washington Post

"[A] cracklingly smart family dramedy.... [I was] stunned and transported by this extraordinarily powerful and intelligent novel."―Lev Grossman, Time

"Brilliant, hilarious, endlessly inventive, and compulsively readable, WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE grabs you by the collar and never lets go. Semple is not only a masterful juggler, and an astute social critic, she is a magician!"―Jonathan Evison, author of West of Here

"A funny, quirky and wildly entertaining read."―Ladies' Home Journal

"WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is a pure pleasure.... Semple's light touch and glittering prose keep things aloft."―Kate Tuttle, The Boston Globe

"Full of endearing moments and sublime satire, WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is 'divinely funny' literature."―The Week

"It was only a matter of time before Maria Semple turned her hilariously wicked, razor-sharp, acid-etched humor loose on Seattle, and set her impeccable laser sights on the heart of Microsoft. At times a tears-to-your-eyes laugher that skewers my own home town (and quite possibly my own mother), WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is also a compassionate look at family dysfunction, the paralysis of genius, and good old-fashioned parental love. Cleverly constructed and brilliantly executed, Semple has driven this one home with great authority, and has proven, once again, that she ranks among contemporary literature's finest satirists."―Garth Stein, author of The Art of Racing in the Rain

"Find your patron saint of fed-up-ed-ness in our fave summer read, WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE.... You'll laugh your pants off, and love the takeaway-that a life gone off the rails can propel you in a bright new direction."―Redbook

"If you read only one book this summer about an agoraphobic mother and her broken promise to take her daughter Bee on a trip to Antarctica, make it this one.... Semple writes like an oversized plume, finding all your tickle spots with ease."―Holley Simmons, Washington Post Express

"...A smart, caperish, very contemporary novel about marriage, mores and family life by an observer who knows the cultural landscape."

―Jeffrey Ann Goudie, The Kansas City Star

"Achingly funny and perfectly timed....Semple has a big heart, and possess that rare ability to skewer, dissect and empathize with her targets, all at the same time....Read BERNADETTE, laugh loud and long, then take a good look in the mirror."―Mary Ann Gwinn, Seattle Times

"A delightfully funny book, that constantly catches one by surprise, WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE combines a shrewdly observed portrait of Seattle-life with, of all things, a mysterious disappearance in Antarctica. A pleasure."―Matthew Kneale, author of When We Were Romans

"If you're not taking a vacation this summer, a dive into Semple's comedic melting pot of family dysfunction, hyperactive parenting, and mental unraveling offers a hilarious escape. You'll find yourself rooting for the runaway parent in a narrative that is dark, funny, and completely human."―Tanya Jensen, Los Angeles Confidential

"Sharp and funny, a literary page turner..."―Susannah Cahalan, New York Post

"Semple...has the feel for family strife of a born literary novelist, but she retains the comedic sensibility of a screen writer; which is to say that the book is actually laugh-out-loud funny, rather than "humorous." And don't let the hilarity of the first third of the book fool you into thinking that this is a light farce; by the last page, Semple, in addition to skewering helicopter-parents with satire so deft that it could pass for truth, touches on religion, class, and what we owe to those we love."―Nicholas Mancusi, The Daily Beast

"An uproarious comedy of manners."―Mark Haddon, People

"This brilliant satire (think Portlandia, set in Seattle) is inventive and wickedly funny."―Whole Living

"With a sure feel for the screwball and the slapstick, Maria Semple deliciously sends up the privileged, overachieving, PC world of Emerald City. WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is a crazy quilt of an epistolary novel, utterly contemporary yet pleasingly old-fashioned, and always light and witty."―Stewart O'Nan, author of The Odds

"Semple's snappy writing and spot-on humor make this one of the funniest beach reads of the summer."―Meganne Fabrega, Minneapolis Star Tribune

"[A] high-energy, often hilarious epistolary novel."―Brangien Davis, Seattle Magazine

"...A smart, intelligent, nuanced tale whose characters will stick with you long after you finish the last page."―Karen M. Thomas, The Dallas Morning News

"Jonathan Franzen endorsed it...and we weren't aware that he liked anything, so we felt inclined to pick it up. We now see why he enjoyed it so much."―Zoë Triska, Huffington Post

"Semple is the novelist of the moment-a Ben Fountain for the latte set....outrageously funny and deceptively deep, [BERNADETTE] is a rewarding read."―Tucker Shaw, The Denver Post

"With its big heart set on acceptance, BERNADETTE feels something like coming home."―Paul Constant, The Stranger

"...A shrewd yet compassionate portrait of family dysfunction and the volatility of genius in laugh-out-loud, irresistibly high-spirited prose.... WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE takes readers on an original and movingly imaginative adventure."―Catherine Straut, Elle

"Semple's ear for satirizing this world is sharp and scathingly funny; she could probably turn her novel into a stand-up act."―Stewart Oksenhorn, The Aspen Times

"Semple, once a writer for Arrested Development, picks apart the mundane interactions of everyday life with a hilarious hand, and you're sure to be as swept up in this witty, inventive mystery as we were."―Emily Temple, Flavorpill

"WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is fresh and funny and accomplished, but the best thing about it was that I never had any idea what was going to happen next. It was a wild ride..."―Kate Atkinson, author of Case Histories and Started Early, Took My Dog

"Maria Semple dissects the gory complexities of familial dysfunction with a deft and tender hand. WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is a triumph of social observation and black comedy by a skillful chronicler of moneyed malaise."―Patrick deWitt, author of The Sisters Brothers

"[An] engrossing and whip-smart modern epistolary novel..."―Stephan Lee, Entertainment Weekly

"Semple paints each character with depth and tenderness while keeping the tone upbeat; no easy feat for a novel about a mother who pulls a disappearing act."―Korina Lopez, USA Today

"[A] romp of a novel.... Semple...nail[s] Seattle's idiosyncrasies in wickedly funny send-ups."―Barbara Lloyd McMichael, The Bellingham Herald

"...Utterly delightful....Semple used to write for the revered cult hit Arrested Development, and she brings plenty of squirming comedy to the novel, which manages to be that rare good read that actually makes you feel good at the end. Her send-up of Seattle is hilarious, with its Victims Against Victimhood support groups, moms offering organic gardeners swiss chard in lieu of payment, and teachers who are so PC that fourth graders are expected to seriously debate the pros and cons of the Chinese occupation of Tibet. But the heart of the book belongs to Bee, who, as an admissions counselor puts it, tests off the charts for grit and poise; and her mother, who, for all her neuroses, did a bang-up job of turning out one terrific kid."―Yvonne Zipp, Christian Science Monitor

"...A quirky novel, laugh-out-loud funny in parts, filled with erudite cultural commentary, and teeming with life's predictable messiness, as well as its limitless potential for unexpected joy."―Kathryn Justice Leache, The Commercial Appeal

"A touching and hilarious portrait of the anxiety producing, high powered Seattle lifestyle of a somewhat eccentric family of three (and their dog Ice Cream).... This is a great read, well written and populated by characters you care about deeply."―Ruth Freeman, The Norwalk Citizen

"Stands to become a cult favorite.... Like Jane Austen-who set the gold standard for social satire-Semple's most ridiculous characters are convinced that they're the normal ones, and it's wonderful fun to watch as they behave abominably, believing themselves blameless.... Semple has a keen ear for the nuances of different voices, and it's a joy to get to know these people.... Bernadette is...marvelous. Her rants read like the best comedy routines.... It's the rare book that actually deserves the term "laugh-out-loud funny," but I found myself reading passages from almost every page to anyone who would listen, even as I could barely articulate the words through my own laughter."―Malena Watrous, San Francisco Chronicle

"Intertwined with the funny stuff is the heartfelt story of a personal crisis of a creative talent who's slipped off the rails... Bernadette's journey is fresh, funny, and thought provoking."―Anne Payne, The Florida Times-Union

"...Comic lines and...fast-paced events."―Nan Willard Cappo, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

"I don't even know where to begin with how fantastic it is.... I ate up the Microsoft-obsessed setting and the fabulous, mad-but-not-really Bernadette. Go, get it, thank me later."―Megan Angelo, Glamour.com

"...If wacky, anxiety-prone geniuses are some of your favorite people, then pick up Maria Semple's WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE to add Bernadette Fox and her family to your list of hilarious companions. Bernadette and company don't mind cursing, so if you do, please be warned. But if not, then you've got a stamped passport to Semple's expertly crafted and rollicking, laugh-till-you-cry adventure that will have you tearing through the pages to find out if Bernadette is gone for good."―Dawn Andrus Paine, Daily Herald (Utah)

"...Well-plotted and masterfully satirical.... WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is really, really funny, and not in the usual way that suggests the author is trying to be funny to cover up their deficiencies in plot or styling. As it turns out, Maria Semple is both a good writer and a funny writer, but she prefers to be the latter."―Janet Potter, The Millions

"...Sublime..."―Frank Bruni, on his blog for The New York Times

"With only her second book, TV writer-turned novelist Maria Semple has won rave reviews with a withering, but ultimately affectionate satire of Seattle's privileged set."―Chris Michaud, Reuters

"If Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl represented the dark heart of the summer literature, Maria Semple's...BERNADETTE embodies the sunnier, funnier side.... Semple has a flair for satire and screwball jinks, and she has produced a great gift to avid readers: a book that you never want to finish reading."―Connie Ogle, The Miami Herald

"An epistolary novel for the twenty-first century.... Paced like a beach read, BERNADETTE has a scathing wit and a casual storytelling style that pulls the reader in and forces her to listen."―Capital Times' blog

"One of the funniest stories you can read this year."―Donna Liquori, The Albany Times Union

"....A powerful mosaic of mental illness, artistic temperament, and family melodrama.... Semple's background in television and comedy... provide[s] the foundation for this subversively funny novel and its all-too-rare blend of humor and heart.... In a time when everything is a version of something else, how extraordinary-and exciting-to read a novel that subverts conventions to create an experience that feels so fresh."―Jeremy Medina, The L Magazine

"This book is hysterical, kind of wacky, and utterly original."―Entertainment Weekly's "The Bullseye"

"One of the big burst-of-oxygen books this year.... clever and inventive but also genuine and heartfelt."―Gillian Flynn for The New York Times's "Inside the List"

"Semple's epistolary novel satirizes Seattle, Microsoft, helicopter parents, the elite, and the overeducated-while revealing truths about family, genius, ambition, and resilience."―Gillian Flynn, GQ

"[A] clever story of family dysfunction."―Dailycandy

"Marketed as a beach read, give this to your soccer moms who have come to the realization that maybe they aren't 'all that.' With a Tiffany-blue cover, it's wrapped perfectly!"―Michelle Will, The Kitsap Sun

"A quirky comic masterpiece...about an irresistibly precocious teen and her awesomely agoraphobic mom.... BERNADETTE is an ingenious, enjoyable, continually surprising farce."―David Hiltbrand, The Philadelphia Inquirer

"In appearance, this may be the perfect beach read to go with your retro bikini. Inside the cover, Semple's novel is funny, suspenseful, multi-faceted, multi-media, and sad, too - spot-on social commentary..."―Jen Doll, The Atlantic Wire

"Unputdownable!"―Sumana Ghosh-Witherspoon, Parents.com

"A hilarious, nasty, heartfelt satire about parenting, privilege, genius, resilience and life in Seattle."―Gillian Flynn on Today

"It's the first epistolary novel I've ever loved, and sharp as hell."―Emma Straub for Salon

"Few novels will make you laugh aloud the way Semple's satiric take on a disintegrating Seattle family does."―The Charlotte Observer

"Stunningly astute.... Beyond its ethnographic value as a snapshot of the underlying hypocrisies of the way the top five percent lives now, WYGB delivers at least one knowing chuckle per page in an innovative structure worthy of its own TED Talk."―Christina Spines, Word & Film

"This funny and heartfelt novel has it all: love, mystery, infidelity, and humor. The complications of human life are on full display and examined with absurdity."―Laura Anderson, BLOGCRITICS.ORG

"Tart [and] searingly funny."―Jessica Grose, Fast Company

"Clever, witty and laugh-out-loud funny. And that's a rare and wonderful thing."―The Minneapolis Star Tribune

I want to know where Bernadette went
By Cindy Bokma
If you didn't read Maria Semple's first book, This One Is Mine: A Novel you must do so. The author has the kind of writing where she slyly inserts little witty comments here and there and if you just skim the book, you'll miss those gems.

Where'd You Go, Bernadette is an unusual and crafty novel in that it doesn't read completely like a regular book. Put together with bits and pieces from flashbacks, emails and other documents, the book has the reader turning pages to finally figure out where did Bernadette actually go?

What mother can't identify with Bernadette's desire to flee? She was once a promising architect but is now someone who doesn't want to venture outside her house. She is irritated by her neighbors, mothers at her daughter's school, slow drivers, Canadians, to name a few things. In her near-refusal to leave the house, she farms her duties out to a virtual assistant in India and you might take a guess how that pans out.

When Bernadette disappears, her 15 year old daughter is convinced Bernadette just wouldn't go without a good reason. She's the one who pieces everything together but not before the reader is taken on a journey to learn what exactly drove Bernadette to leave.

I was hooked from beginning to end! This novel is fun and entertaining and I was sad to turn the last page.

Fun and entertaining summer read!
By drey
Bernadette Fox is a wife and mother with anxiety issues. HUGE anxiety issues. It's so bad that she hires an offshore resource to handle her day-to-day errands - the ones she doesn't have to show up for in person. The less she has to deal with people, the better!

She wasn't always like this. In fact, she used to be a rising star in the world of architecture, back in the day. A genius rising star. Then something happened, and Bernadette ran from the world.

Her husband Elgin still loves her, and her daughter Bee thinks the world revolves around her, so Bernadette doesn't have any complaints. Until things spin out of control, and Elgin decides an intervention is necessary before it all goes to hell in a hand-basket. After all, it can't be good if the FBI comes a-knocking...

Then Bernadette disappears.

Where did she go? I'd tell you, but that would mean you'd miss the fun and enjoyment of reading Where'd You Go, Bernadette? for yourself. It manages to present Bernadette's anxiety issues in a compassionate and heart-warming manner. You'll love Bee, and you'll love Bernadette. Elgin proves that genius doesn't preclude human errors, and the novel ends with lessons learnt even for Bernadette. Definitely add this to your summer reading - before summer's gone.

Entertaining and easy read but repetitive and sells out at the end
By YumYum
(Warning- spoilers) I raced through this book. Bernadette is a very entertaining character- she shares the same opinion of Seattle that most people have when they move here. Many people leave for the reasons Bernadette lists. But I grew to love Bernadette's grit- even if it was a little obsessive and thorny. But then the book takes huge shift- HUGE-changes the character of the mom (she does something to her daughter that is just not conceivable because she is welded to her child and is her child's refuge- so she just wouldn't do it). Maybe the author didn't know where to go from there so she had the mom "go". (the title sort of gives that away in some sort of dual meaning- as in "go away" and/or "loss of self", etc.). But once this happens, the book becomes sort of unbelievable and tedious. And on the last two pages, all of a sudden, Bernadette has a complete reversal of what she previously thought- which was a huge let down for me. There is no resolution for some of the problems that crop up-some HUGE problems- so why have them at all? I guess the author took a class in symbolism, and you don't have to guess what the house, the boat, the ice, the blackberries, etc, all seem to represent. It's in your face for sure. Even though she has some msft details wrong- admins ARE secretaries not VP's and if someone dallies with them, they would be FIRED- and other things that make no sense- I guess the average reader who is NOT in Seattle won't know it, and it won't bother them.
I have to say I loved the first part of the book. I thought it was witty and on the mark, and that Bernadette was a touching and brilliant renegade with her own drum- even if her drum needed some adjustment. Then it fell to "meh, not so much". Sigh. It wasn't laugh out loud funny. But big parts of it were entertaining. It just so lost me at the end.

Lord Copper, newspaper magnate and proprietor of the Daily Beast, has always prided himself on his intuitive flair for spotting ace reporters. That is not to say he has not made the odd blunder, however, and may in a moment of weakness make another. Acting on a dinner party tip from Mrs. Algernon Stitch, Lord Copper feels convinced that he has hit on just the chap to cover a promising war in the African Republic of Ishmaelia. So begins Scoop, Waugh's exuberant comedy of mistaken identity and brilliantly irreverent satire of the hectic pursuit of hot news.

By Amanda Starling
What I do love about this book is that it's a satire on the media (newspapers at the time). It exposes the fabrication of "news" that we all take to be real. Non existent wars are begun and important information ignored all in the name of ratings and fame.

One of life's notable reads
By reybo
"Scoop" is often cited as the reason there are almost no novels about journalists. This one tops anything so don't even try. Waugh's characters will stay with me forever. I wish he wrote 10 sequels. (Yes, I was a reporter.)

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up-Since Kennedy Waters's father deserted the family a while back, it's just been she and her mother. Now, with her mother's sudden and gruesome death and a determined evil demon out to get her, Kennedy learns that her parents had hidden a secret from her. All alone, and with her home destroyed by the demon, the 17-year-old has no other choice but to fulfill a legacy that she didn't even know about until twins Lucas and Jared Lockhart showed up to rescue her. It seems that Kennedy is next in line to represent her family as a member of the ancient clandestine group called the Legion, which evolved from the Legion of the Black Dove, created to destroy the Illuminati. The original five members accidentally summoned an evil force determined to destroy the Earth, and their descendants have been fighting this demon ever since. Now with all of the present-day adult members ending up dead on the same night, Kennedy, the twins, and two other teens are the new members of the infamous league. Each Legion member has a special gift to use as an advantage in battle, but Kennedy doesn't realize her gift and questions her place in the group. Readers are quickly drawn into the action, from the murder at the beginning to the cliff-hanger at the end. It's the horror aspect more than the fast-paced intrigue, however, that is the book's strong point. The Legion members must travel from one terrifying location to another, and Garcia describes these chilling locations with flawless detail.-Sabrina Carnesi, Crittenden Middle School, Newport News, VAα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journal. LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist
Kennedy’s world is turned upside down when her mother suddenly dies, a poltergeist attacks her, and she is rescued by Lukas and Jared—dashingly handsome twins who claim to be part of a long line of demon fighters called the Legion. According to Lukas and Jared, she is one of them, and before she knows it, Kennedy is swept up in their mission to evade the demonic forces that want them dead and track down parts of a mysterious device that will help them defeat evil once and for all. It gets spookier: the components are all guarded by ghosts haunting grisly murder scenes. The chills are plentiful and spine tingling in this mile-a-minute thriller as they travel from a haunted mansion to an abandoned magic shop, a ramshackle sanitarium, and even a death-row prison. Garcia (Beautiful Creatures, 2009) certainly doesn’t skimp on atmosphere, and the added dramatic love-triangle tension only ups the ante, as does Kennedy’s suspicions that she doesn’t really belong. Readers will anticipate the next installment in this eerie, macabre series. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Beautiful Creatures was a smash hit, and the Legion series is destined for a similar fate: the film rights have already been sold. Grades 8-12. --Sarah Hunter

I ended up liking Unbreakable more than I thought I would. It was really fast paced and a lot happens in the story
By Kathy Habel
I read the first two books in the Caster Chronicles, Beautiful Creatures and Beautiful Darkness, but never finished out that series because the books were so long. I really enjoyed what I read but just didn't want to commit to another 1,000 pages to finish off the series and wished I could have had an abridged version that moved along a little quicker.

While perusing Audible I saw Kami's newest book Unbreakable had a listening time of less than 7 hours. Since I listen at double to triple speed I figured it was less than a 3 hour time commitment and worth my time to try this one. I ended up liking Unbreakable more than I thought I would. It was really fast paced and a lot happens in the story.

I'm not a huge fan of creepy or scary. I choose romance over horror and light over dark always so this wasn't a perfect fit for me but I got sucked into the story and stuck with it to the end. I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue with the next book in the series until the ending which left me wanting to know what happens next.

I've seen this labeled as paranormal romance but I didn't get hooked by the romance element, in fact I cared very little about the romance aspect of this story which is not what I expected. All I kept thinking was seriously so we have to have another love triangle and does it have to be between twins.

What did hook me was the paranormal elements and the mystery and secrets surrounding the Legion.

Dean and Sam in Fictionland
By Average Josey
Unbreakable is a great, quick read with nail biting tension, ghosts that ATTACK you and a cliff hanger. Kennedy is your nomal, insecure teen girl who happens to have an eidetic memory which helps her coast through school. Her mother dies in a scene reminiscent of Cat's Eye and a few weeks later, her life changes for the weird when her cat attacks her; Sam and Dean, I mean Jared and Lucas, rush into her house, kill the spirit who followed her home; and it progresses on from there. Fun book!

The towering vertical city of Mahala is on the brink of war with its neighboring countries. It might be his worst nightmare, but Rojan and the few remaining pain mages have been drafted in to help.

The city needs power in whatever form they can get it -- and fast. With alchemists readying a prototype electricity generator, and factories producing guns faster than ever, the city's best advantage is still the mages. Tapping their power is a risky plan, but with food in the city running out, and a battle brimming that no one is ready for, risky is the best they've got...

The spectacular conclusion to the adventures of Rojan Dizon, which began with the thrilling fantasy debut Fade to Black.

From Booklist
The sequel to Fade to Black and Before the Fall (both 2013) finds the towering city-state of Mahala under imminent siege by their powerful enemy, the Storad. This is bad news to Mahalans, of course, but it’s particularly bad news to Rojan Dizan, whom the Storad want dead. Another enemy, the Mishans, has offered to help some of the Mahalan higher-ups to safety, but they want something in exchange—two things, actually: Rojan and his sister, Lise, whose expertise in weaponry and magic would come in handy. But is this a good deal for Rojan, or a deadly deal? If none of the foregoing made a grain of sense, then you probably need to read the first two books in this series before tackling this one. If, on the other hand, you understood all that, then proceed with all haste to this book and devour it immediately. It’s powerfully written, with a beautifully realized dystopian world and some thoroughly engaging characters. --David Pitt

A city under siege and desperate times calls for desperate measures.
By Dark Faerie Tales
Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: A city under siege and desperate times calls for desperate measures.

Opening Sentence: “There is perhaps, some universal truth that no has seen fit to tell me about.”

The Review:

Rojan is back, his brother Perak is the Archdeacon, and being a Mage is no longer illegal. Sadly the enemy is literally at the gate and times are quite crazy! This book picks up not long after the end of book 2, which I think I have reviewed all three books for you guys! Rojan definitely hits the ground running, while tracking someone he stumbles across a powerful female mage, Halina, whom he convinces to return to the top with him. Together all of the pain Mages will play an important part in the safety of Mahala.

The Storad have been besieging Mahala for weeks now, and food is running out and power is running out. The tunnels have provided a sneaky way for the enemy to enter, and Pasha, Jake and Rojan must find away to keep them out. Battles ensue, tunnels collapse, but when the Storad come right through the main gate they all know the real fight is on. How many will die trying to save this city?

My biggest problem with this series is that Rojan is a bit of an jerk. It works sometimes, and other times I think this guy can’t be a more stereotypical guy than that. The second book Before the Fall was definitely my least favorite book of this trilogy, it suffered greatly from feeling like just filler. I really enjoyed the first book, and I really did enjoy this book. I was totally shocked and dismayed by the ending. Rojan grows a ton in this book, which I was so glad to see. We even get to see whom he really loves, and what he is willing to do for everyone.

This is an action packed book from the start, it will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see who is going to make it through, will anyone even make it through? Will the city fall? I feel like I had so much to say until I sat down to write this review and drew a blank. All the things I want to talk about, rave about, are like major spoilers. Seriously, so much mind blowing stuff happens in this book. Honestly I liked this book, but was more than a little disappointed in book 2, so I had decided to not finish the series. I am so glad this was in my review stack. This book really brought back what I enjoyed about this series. That despite the jerky things Rojan thinks he really is a Mage with a heart of gold. He truly cares about so many and despite being afraid he continues to move forward and keeps going until the bitter end.

In that aspect he is everything you want in a heroic main character. I was a little upset by how unrealized his romance and love was until it was almost too late. It did add an element of tragedy to the story though. This was a great last book, sometimes they just leave you hanging. And while this does, it really kind of doesn’t, and it isn’t the typically way to wrap up a trilogy. If you looking for a interesting science fiction/fantasy trilogy look no further.

Notable Scene:

“If that point made it easier to stay alive, well, that’s always a bonus.”

“We were legal, most of them said, because the Archdeacon was too pure and holy to understand how evil we were, and also he was cursed with a merciful heart and a mage for a brother.”

“I’ve always been a superb liar.”

“There were on their way through them.”

“Peace was what I wanted a respite from the ever present fear, a respite that I’d only ever found in two places.”

“It was black, had never really been away, was singing sweet nothings in my ear.”

“It was down to me.”

FTC Advisory: Orbit/Hachette Book Group provided me with a copy of Last to Rise. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

He may act like he doesn’t care about much but people are beginning ...
By N. Albert
The city rises upwards not across. Those at the bottom, as you might imagine are rather downtrodden and rarely see light, or much of it anyway. Those at the top, in the clouds, are living on cloud nine; that would by the Ministry. You do Not cross the Ministry. Rojan freed the Downsiders from the Pit they resided in and when doing so he doomed the city to starvation unless he can do something about it. He may act like he doesn’t care about much but people are beginning to crack the code about him. Pain mages have been made legal in order to get the city running, which they must because they have an army at both their gates ready to pick the city apart should they fail. They desperately need power, and more pain mages to help.

There is a great deal about this novel that just works. It is a great last novel. The second novel was one of those typical build-up novels where nothing too much happens but it builds up in tension to this novel. So from the start we have a ‘situation’ and a lot of tension. In the last novel Rojan was betrayed by Dench, who now works for the army waiting outside of the city and has some rather hateful feelings towards Rojan now. Speaking in general terms though this novel has love found, friends lost and sacrifices made. All powerful concepts to include into a novel. So it is fast paced and powerful. The ending is perfect for the trilogy.

Worth getting to. Great read.

Exciting Finale to the Series!
By Timothy Pecoraro
I have to admit that Last to Rise was a very anticipated novel for me. It is the third and as far as I know final book in a trilogy of books, which the first one was Fade to Black which came out back in January of this year. Yes an entire trilogy in a year. The book, as part of the trilogy is amazing. Everything is coming to a head, the Storad are at the gate; literally. Things are going to get much worse before they get better. The story is well handled and while there are new characters introduced. None shine as brightly as the characters who have been there from the beginning. I find myself at a loss when I talk about Last to Rise because with the trilogy over I mostly think about the trilogy as a whole. Nothing ends the way one might expect and I have to admit Last to Rise has one of the best Epilogues I’ve ever read. No matter what Francis Knight writes next, I definitely NEED to read it.

Etiquette & Espionage (Finishing School), by Gail Carriger

It's one thing to learn to curtsy properly. It's quite another to learn to curtsy and throw a knife at the same time. Welcome to Finishing School.
Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is a great trial to her poor mother. Sophronia is more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper manners--and the family can only hope that company never sees her atrocious curtsy. Mrs. Temminnick is desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady. So she enrolls Sophronia in Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.

But Sophronia soon realizes the school is not quite what her mother might have hoped. At Mademoiselle Geraldine's, young ladies learn to finish...everything. Certainly, they learn the fine arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but the also learn to deal out death, diversion, and espionage--in the politest possible ways, of course. Sophronia and her friends are in for a rousing first year's education.
Set in the same world as the Parasol Protectorate, this YA series debut is filled with all the saucy adventure and droll humor Gail's legions of fans have come to adore.

A great start for a what looks to be a great series
By Kim
Review written for and originally published at steamingenious.blogspot.com

I have been eagerly anticipating this first book in a new series by Gail Carriger, author of the fantastic The Parasol Protectorate series.

The book follows the exploits of 14 year old Sophronia Temminnick, a troublemaking youngest daughter of a middle class Victorian family. Not knowing what to do with a daughter interested in technology and books, her mother is only too happy to send her off to an exclusive finishing school. Except this finishing school teaches more than just deportment. It also teaches the arts of espionage and assassination.

This book has all the fun of the first Harry Potter novel; it shows an unsuspecting protagonist encountering a weird and wonderful boarding school, and, in fact, almost an entire new society of which she was previously unaware. So this book takes some pretty familiar "starting a new school" tropes and puts a nice spin on them. Sophonia is an extremely likeable character and her new school provides lots of opportunities for her to show off her daring.

This series takes place in the same world as the Parasol Protectorate series, but it's set several decades earlier, in the 1860s, I believe. So fans of that series will enjoy seeing some familiar characters pop up here and there. As for the steampunk elements, while I tend to think of the Parasol Protectorate as a predominantly supernatural series set in a steampunk world, this series seems to be a steampunk series set in a supernatural world. Meaning that this series seems to involve a lot more technology in more important roles than the previous series. There are also vampires and werewolves, but the supernatural elements don't drive the main plot and are pretty much incidental.

I don't want to spoil all the surprises of the book, but I will say that the steampunk elements include: airborne highwaymen in small balloons, a giant airship, a steam-powered dog, mechanical servants, airship pirates, a school for evil geniuses, aetheric communication devices, and a group who adorn their clothing with gears and their top hats with decorative goggles.

Ultimately, I loved this book. I found it totally charming, with its combination of polite manners, adventure, and emphasis on practical skills such as how to fake a faint without wrinkling your skirts. I would absolutely enroll in this type of finishing school.

My one and only complaint is that I wish it were longer. It's a young adult series, so it's fairly short. Otherwise there's no noticeable difference in language or style from Carriger's other books. There's no sex or any real romance in this one, which is another difference. (And can we take a moment to celebrate a YA book with a female protagonist that DOESN'T place any emphasis on romance?) I'm extremely excited about the potential for this to be a phenomenal series. I know the second book is already written and I think is supposed to come out later this year? I can't wait.

"Finishing School" isn't QUITE what it sounds like here...
By Cissa
I've enjoyed the "Parasol Protectorate" novels a lot, but this one was even more fun.

It's set in the same world, I think somewhat before the PP series, and focuses more on intrigue and steampunk, and less on the vamps and weres.

Plus- as an American who went to local public schools, I have always ADORED boarding-school fiction! And a boarding school on an airship??? with the companion school for boys devoted to developing Evil Geniuses??? What's not to love?

OK, the kids don't Save The World. What kids really can expect to? but they do rise to their challenges, outwit the adults, and have a grand time doing it.

A good ending, but with enough threads left that #2 can pick up nicely.

I think a lot of Harry Potter fans could love this, if they're OK with the focus being on GIRLS (the horror!).

Highly recommended. And for YA's, too!

Solid beginning to a promising series
By Amazon Customer
I have to say, I was equal parts excited and trepidatious* when my fave awesome person at Little, Brown asked me if I wanted to be part of the blog tour for this. I loved Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series, but was concerned about how she would make the transition to YA, especially after my friend Elizabeth's reaction... That gave me pause. FORTUNATELY, I have to (politely, maybe) disagree with E. on this one. Yes, it was a little heavy handed at first, and was missing some of the magic that came with Alexia's narration and her fabulous personality - but it worked, and in the end I quite liked it.

I'm a pretty firm believer that you don't have to change your style/writing much (if at all) when you change age levels - there's no need to "write down" to kids (especially in this case, as the Parasol Protectorate series was a highly popular cross-over - Pretty much remove the steamy Victorian sexytimes and you're good to go). But the beginning of the book seemed like Carriger was going to write down to her audience and point things out in a really obtrusive way (as if they couldn't possibly put things together all on their own...), and that has got to be my number one I-will-throw-you-against-the-wall-you-just-see-if-I-don't pet peeve. Even as a kid, I found it highly insulting; you've got to have faith in your audience, and faith in yourself as a storyteller that you're doing fine - you don't have to handhold, and if you do feel the need to, you're not telling it right. But either the handholding was just a brief blip, or I got used to it, because the rest of the book slipped into the quirky, upper-crusty, hilariously Missish storytelling I'd grown to love in the Parasol Protectorate.

Etiquette & Espionage - much like the PP series, or Sorcery & Cecelia , and others of its kind - thrusts readers into a strange** world, very like ours and yet decidedly not, and then relies on an irrepressible but pragmatic narrator to guide the ship*** and draw readers along on a whisper of curiosity and charm. After Elizabeth's unfavorable reaction, I did something I generally don't do, which is look into reviews of a book right before I'm set to read it. (I don't want to be biased, so I typically avoid them - but I had to know if it was going to be a dud! I needed to brace myself if that was the case...) One of the complaints I saw most about this book was about the characters, actually - a lack of connection to them, a dislike for them, etc. And though I can see a tendency toward stockness about them, I didn't ever find myself disliking them - especially Sophronia and some of her more unlikely companions. I loved her fearlessness-bordering-on-recklessness quite a bit, and her intelligence and composure, and I think she'd keep me entertained over the course of a series by dint of that alone. But beyond that, I found that the characters manage to be both well-suited to their AU Victorian England and to a modern audience looking for characters a little less demure and a little more spirited, and that's really all I could ask of them. I was curious, and I was charmed.

Etiquette & Espionage turned out to be a very fun, very YA-appropriate expansion of Carriger's world. Set earlier than PP, there are all sorts of little easter eggs for readers already familiar with the world (traditions, characters at a younger age, or before big events, etc.), which made it fun on a level that works without being obtrusive - readers who aren't familiar with the world won't feel confused or like they're missing anything, but will have bits of handy background should they choose to move on to the other series. The world of Carriger's steampunky England is expanded in some ways by this spin-off, though I think for the most part, as it largely takes place in such a very insular location (a boarding school on a dirigible, for realsies), some readers may feel the lack of variation and be disappointed. Personally, I liked being able to explore a more confined world in depth, and on the few instances when they went offship, plenty of hijinks ensued to balance it out. Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality was a good starting point, not overwhelming the reader with the alternate universe, but providing a good foundation for it. And while I'm not panting for the next books, as I was with the first few of the Protectorate, I look forward to seeing where the world expands from Mlle. Geraldine's over the course of the series.

* Spellcheck needs to stop telling me "trepidatious" isn't a word. If the OED says it is, then it is.
**Both from a historical and a contemporary point of view
***I'mma just go ahead and mix all the metaphors I can, mmmkay?
