What's Wrong with Timmy?, by Maria Shriver

What is the response when a child points out that a disabled child or adult looks 'different'? Shriver tells the story of Kate, who finds that making friends with a mentally retarded boy helps her learn that the two of them have a lot in common.

Amazon.com Review
When 8-year-old Kate meets a boy who seems somehow different, she feels funny inside. After talking with her mom, though, Kate begins to understand that Timmy is just like her in many ways. Timmy has special needs; he takes longer to learn than Kate, and can't walk or run as well. But he also "loves his family, he wants friends, he goes to school, and he dreams about what he wants to be when he grows up." Kate and Timmy meet, and the seeds of a friendship are planted.

For all those children who ask their parents why someone looks or acts "different," author and journalist Maria Shriver's What's Wrong with Timmy? provides a base for discussion. Kate's mother models appropriate behavior, speaking to her daughter calmly and directly, and providing examples from her own life to help Kate understand about Timmy. Illustrator Sandra Speidel's soft, intentionally hazy pastels are lovely; bold, enlarged phrases on the opposite pages of text act as captions. Shriver and Speidel collaborated previously on the tremendously popular What's Heaven?, also starring Kate and her mother. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-This brief book tells of the meeting in the park between an eight-year-old girl and the "mentally retarded" son of her mother's friend. The writer describes Timmy as someone who "looked different" and has a face that seems "flatter" than other children's. Kate asks her mother about the boy and learns that he is her age and was born with disabilities. The children discover that they like the same things at school, recess and sports, and don't like math. After a game of basketball with her friends, Timmy and Kate make a play date. The warm pastel illustrations support the theme of acceptance of all people no matter their differences. However, the little girl's questions and actions are quite mature for her age. The lack of paragraphs might be a bit confusing to young readers, and the intermittent use of bold-faced, larger-sized type is a bit disruptive, although its purpose seems to be to highlight the theme. The book reads well, though, and would be a good introduction for youngsters welcoming a disabled child into their school or neighborhood.

From Booklist
Ages 5-8. Shriver, whose family started the Special Olympics, introduces children to the subject of mental retardation. The overly long text begins with eight-year-old Kate noticing a boy who looks "different." Timmy's mother is a friend of Kate's mom, which provides the opportunity for Kate to talk to Timmy. At first, she's afraid and nervous, but soon the two kids are chatting about school and sports, and Timmy confesses that kids call him "slow and dumb." When several of Kate's friends come over and stare, she informs them that Timmy is her new friend. Later, she ponders why God makes life so hard for people, how Timmy's parents feel about having a child like Timmy, how it feels to be made fun of. This is the best part of the book. It offers kids a chance to think for themselves and helps balance the didactic parts of the text and the stiff dialogue. The effective, gauzy chalk artwork also adds a softening note. Because of Shriver's name, this will get a lot of publicity, but more kid-friendly books include Nan Gregory's How Smudge Came to Town (1999) and Alden Carter's Big Brother Dustin (1997). A resource list is appended. REVWR

What's Wrong with This Book? Plenty!
By Chava Willig Levy
As a writer who gets around in a wheelchair and conducts disability-awareness workshops for school children, I've been a longtime collector of books that acquaint kids with people who have disabilities. This book is among the most disappointing I've ever seen. Here's why:
1. The book centers on a mother-daughter dialogue (actually, more of a mother monologue) *about* a kid who has Down Syndrome. How easy it would have been to transform the manuscript into a dialogue *with* a kid who has Down Syndrome!
2. The choice to change the font to big and bold whenever a disability-related word is introduced is counterproductive. Take a sentence like "And then I saw that she was in a WHEELCHAIR." [This may not be Ms. Shriver's exact wording, but it's close.] The large, dark letters send a danger signal to readers young and old: "Whoa! Being in a wheelchair is cause for alarm, fear, panic." This is the very opposite of what disability rights activists have been striving to convey in books, film and television for decades.
Ms. Shriver is to be commended for her work on behalf of people with disabilities. Although well intentioned, this book does not further the cause she champions.

Sincere Effort -- Many Positive Points
By Julie Jordan Scott
I was very curious to read this title from Maria Shriver knowing her family background with people with special needs.
My brother has Down's Syndrome, so I know what it is to be on the receiving end of other children looking at my brother and wondering (sometimes outloud and sometimes in facial expression, stares and body language) wondering "What's wrong with him?" Recently one little girl asked my daughter, "Why is your uncle so freaky?"
These are truths: that people "in the world" don't always use politically correct terms... not by a long shot... and as fellow citizens we can educate those who have not yet learned some of the simple truths this book teaches.
One warning (to those who do not share this view) the book takes a very spiritual stance in its explanations.
Another shortcoming is overcome very simply. Each page has quite a bit of text and I thought, "This is way too much on a page to teach the very littlest children who really need the lessons the most" and then I saw the bolded, larger words on each page could be the only words read. Those words would be enough for the littlest ones to understand the message of the book.
It would be tough to write a perfect book on this subject that pleases everyone.
This book makes a sincere effort and will be helpful for many who read it.

What's Wrong with Timmy?
By Max Donatelli
I just read What's Wrong with Timmy? It was a pleasure to read, especially having my own son, Craig, 13 years old, who has Down syndrome. It really hit home with me how other children sometimes view Craig. I am recommending that our school district order copies so teachers can read with their students. It was a very positive story focusing on the strengths of children with special needs and how much alike we all are. Kudos to Ms. Shriver for a touching book that I hope gets widely read and helps to de-stigmatize our children! This is a very hopeful book that should be read by every elementary and middle school student, and discussed in class with their teachers...

The Boy: A Novel, by Lara Santoro

"Gorgeous, fiercely intelligent, deeply honest, and incredibly entertaining." ---Anne Lamott

Anna has always been a risk-taker and a free spirit, but now she is raising a young daughter on her own and she has to play it safe. Her twenty-something neighbor with the slow, easy smile is in no way part of Anna's plans. She resists temptation in every way she can, yet Anna is soon drawn into a reckless and obsessive affair.

Provocative, headlong, and utterly compelling, THE BOY is the story of a woman on the edge, torn between love and compulsion, desire and duty. Lara Santoro writes in "hypnotic and swiftly paced" prose (Daniel Woodrell) about the hazards of passion and motherhood and about one woman's unthinkable rebellion.

From Booklist
Santoro’s second novel (after Mercy, 2007), follows one woman’s unraveling after an affair with a younger man propels her to reexamine her perspectives on motherhood and her own identity. A former journalist, Anna is now a single mother in her forties. She and her precocious 8-year-old daughter, Eva, are now living in New Mexico after a bitter split with Eva’s father, who remains in England. An addition to their household is Espi, Eva’s protective caretaker, who has alcohol and gambling problems. The neighbor’s 20-year-old son, a college dropout, is inexplicably drawn to Anna, and the two begin an affair. When Eva travels abroad to spend time with her father, “the boy” moves in with Anna, much to the displeasure of seemingly everyone. Things inevitably begin to lurch out of control as the demons of Anna’s former life come into play, and her self-involved choices lead to catastrophic events in her life and the lives of those around her. Santoro’s fast-paced style aptly conveys Anna’s frenetic downward spiral. --Leah Strauss

Review
"I read it in one go, with my heart in my mouth. Witty, compulsive, sensuous, and brutally honest about the price of motherhood."―Emma Donoghue, author of Room

"Lara Santoro's The Boy is both a swift and seductive novel. To experience such brutal beauty is why I read fiction."―Alice Sebold, author of The Almost Moon

"I read this novel in one sitting and was mesmerized, addicted, charmed, jealous. The Boy is gorgeous, fiercely intelligent, deeply honest, and incredibly entertaining."―Anne Lamott, author of Some Assembly Required

"The Boy is beautifully written, beguiling in its fashion, hypnotic and swiftly paced. Lara Santoro tells a morally complicated and edgy story and doesn't retreat, but stays true to her music. The word brave comes to mind, as does masterful."―Daniel Woodrell, author of Winter's Bone

"Lara Santoro is a brilliant novelist whose vision is fierce and unsparingly clear. The Boy is a beautiful, brutally sensuous novel."―Kate Christensen, author of The Great Man

"Lara Santoro drills deep down, to the maelstrom of desire and despair that we cover up with the stories we tell ourselves. Unflinching and passionate, fierce and tender, The Boy is both a love story between parents and children, and a coming-of-age story for all women who are old enough to know better. It broke my heart."―Allegra Huston, author of Love Child

"The Boy unfolds with terse, impressionistic rapidity-like a spare, brutalist modern fairy tale....You can't turn away."―Ben Dickinson, Elle

"Brilliant....Ms. Santoro has crafted a book just as fascinating [as Junot Diaz's This Is How You Lose Her], twice as stark, and simply unforgettable."―Autumn Markus, New York Journal of Books

"the reckless vault across generational lines."
By Amelia Gremelspacher
This story riveted my attention from the first paragraph. Anna is an immensely knowable character. She has a child for whom she has devoted her life after the early year of post partum depression. In fact, "If motherhood leaves a residue from one lifetime to the next, a sort of encoded knowledge best deciphered at he direst times, Anna had every reason. To suspect she was on round number one."

Her daughter Eva is the organized one, the one who remembers due dates on books and when to pay fees. Anna finds herself living the straight and narrow. Until the night she meets the boy. He is the son of a dear friend, just graduated from college, and preternaturally wise.

From the first meeting of eyes she knows to stay away. And her struggles are the stuff of life. She unsuccessfully tries to ward off the incursion of Sonic slushies and frito pies into the diets of her slender daughter and not so skinny housekeeper. The women visit the "female river that flows north.". They act out Bladerunner, although Anna has never seen it.

The language of this book is seductive in its leading us through the story. The land in the American southwest sets a backdrop both sere and deep with secrets. The boy is a potentiality, older than the age of consent but younger than prudence and the rhythm of her days. In vignettes of words, Santoro draws her story and impels us to follow.

A fast read. Warning for those who like cliff jumping.
By Kathryn C. Hogan
This book is slim and reads very fast. Middle-aged Anna and her daughter have fled from the girl's father and moved across the ocean to start a new life. The girl is unusually perceptive and stubborn about certain things. She seems to have become the adult in this dysfunctional relationship. Her sensible warnings seem to foretell that things won't end well. At a party, Anna comes across the young (20) son of her neighbor. He makes an impression that sticks and Anna now has to decide if she'll let him push his way into her and her daughter's lives. Her judgment seemed to be off-kilter to start and now she's allowed Jim Beam to weigh in with his opinion. Are we now racing to an inevitable conclusion? I enjoyed the spot on dialogue between mother and daughter. The conclusion seemed to come up very fast and race to an unsettling end.

Lara Santoro fulfills her promise
By goodreader
Lara Santoro fulfills the writing promise of her first novel, Mercy, with this skillful rendering of a tale about motherhood, sexual longing, and the consequences of mixing the two. The New Mexican scenes and seasons provide a rich setting for the protagonist's variously satisfying and harsh life and choices. Tension ripples through the carefully calibrated dialogue that spirits the reader along on a compelling tale about female strength and weakness that should put the author in league with the best novelists before her who have tackled these themes, perhaps with less honesty. Her spirited character, Anna, is painted neither black nor white but cloaked in the complex shadings of lovingness, selfishness, desire, regret, and conviction that we all recognize in ourselves.

About the Author
One of America's most read and celebrated authors, Anne Rice is known for weaving together the visible and supernatural worlds in epic stories that both entertain and challenge readers. Anne's life experiences and intellectual inquisitiveness provide her with constant inspiration for her work. She has written over thirty novels and one autobiography. Her books are rich tapestries of history, belief, philosophy, religion, and compelling characters that examine and extend our physical world beyond the limits we perceive. She lives and works in California.
Ashley Marie Witter was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin, and she went to the Madison Area Technical College, where she was a student of Mark A. Nelson (Aliens, Dark Horse Comics) and earned her associates degree in Animation and Conceptual Development. After experimenting a bit with web comics like Reign of Adeodatus and Scorch, she later contributed to a comics anthology called The Eternal Sad (Gothology). Building a name for herself in the Madison art scene through gallery shows and working on commissions to pay the bills, Ashley was just saying to herself, "I need a real job!" when she received an e-mail from Yen Press the following day.

Now what I expected.
By Rami Ungar
I love Anne Rice's work and try to read and review it when I can. Unfortunately, I felt that this graphic novel adaptation didn't live up to my expectations.

I know that trying to fit an entire novel into maybe 200 illustrated pages is a difficutl task, but I feel that something was lost in the translation of this one. Maybe it's because you don't get Rice's poetic, sensual, vivid prose in a graphic novel, or maybe it's because nothing looks like it did in my mind. But this adaptation didn't thrill me like I thought it would.

Still, the artwork is beautiful and it covers the major events of the story well. That's something to count in its favor, at the very least.

I bit my lip as I typed in the words "sexting and teens" and hit "search." Articles popped up, one after another, and I groaned inwardly. Most of them were about me.

Ashleigh's boyfriend, Kaleb, is about to leave for college. So at a legendary end-of-summer pool party, Ashleigh's friends suggest that she text him a picture of herself -- sans swimsuit -- to take with him. Before she can change her mind, Ashleigh has snapped a photo and hit "send."

But when Kaleb and Ashleigh go through a bad breakup, Kaleb forwards the text to his baseball team. Soon the photo has gone viral, attracting the attention of the school board, the local police, and the media. In the midst of the scandal, Ashleigh feels completely alone -- until she meets Mack at community service. Not only does Mack offer a fresh chance at friendship, but he's the one person in town who received the text of Ashleigh's photo and didn't look.

Acclaimed author Jennifer Brown delivers a gripping novel about honesty, betrayal, redemption, and friendship, as Ashleigh finds that while a picture may be worth a thousand words . . . it doesn't always tell the whole story.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9-11-When 10th-grader Ashleigh feels pressured by her friends into texting a full-frontal nude photo of herself to her college-freshman boyfriend, she believes that the picture is for his eyes only. But Kaleb distributes it to his contact list in revenge for her friends' pranks after the two break up. Ashleigh receives a trickle of mocking messages at first, but when the distribution expands and is posted on a website, an outraged community demands retribution. She is sentenced to community service, and Kaleb is faced with the possibility of being charged as a sex offender. Ashleigh's violation is keenly and sensitively rendered. Text messages, which get crueler with time, headline chapters. Chapters smoothly alternate between flashbacks revealing the chain of events and Ashleigh's time in community service. How and why she is sentenced are slowly revealed, adding intrigue to the story. As the teen begins to fight back against her tormentors and regains trust in her friends, there is hope that her situation will improve. The far-reaching consequences of impulsivity and of texting are made clear, but not in a preachy, heavy-handed, or overly dramatic way. Teens will relate to Ashleigh's feelings of humiliation, even if they've never experienced them to the same degree.-Jennifer Schultz, Fauquier County Public Library, Warrenton, VAα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Ashleigh feels madly in love with her boyfriend, Kaleb, even though he has barely paid attention to her all summer. In just a few days, Kaleb is headed for college. Emboldened by alcohol and egged on by friends, Ashleigh snaps a photo of herself posing naked and sends it to Kaleb. That gets his attention, but then the couple breaks up, and in the virulent aftermath, Kaleb sends the photo to a friend, who shares it with the world. To Ashleigh’s shock, she is arrested for distributing child pornography, and Kaleb, at 18, may go to prison. Despite the headline-grabbing premise, the story feels familiar as a cautionary tale, and although the central issues are well developed, the characters are somewhat one-dimensional. Where Brown excels is capturing scenes from a teen’s everyday life, such as swimming-pool parties and high-school torment. For another fictional perspective on sexting, suggest Susan Vaughn’s Going Underground (2011.) Grades 10-12. --Diane Colson

Solid but lacking something bigger
By Danielle
Jennifer Brown's debut novel, Hate List , was one of my favorites of 2009 and I've read all of her books since then. None of them have ever matched the first since they seem to get more about the issue and less about the characters, and while I like Thousand Words more than some of her other work, it lacked a certain emotional connection that would have made me love it.

I was actually quite pleased to find that Thousand Words is not overly preachy. The premise sounds like a standard after-school special, and because half the book is set during the community service Ashleigh is supposed to learn from, it could have easily been more "sexting is bad here are statistics why!!!" While there were parts that seemed far too exaggerated, the switch between past and present allowed for more of a "fade to black" than a "now here is the terrible story of how I got here" thing-- a much more subtle discussion of the many issues involved in this story.

However, I think the constant switch-up was more detrimental overall because I felt no real connection to the characters in either half. The community service bits were short and never spent enough time making anyone seem less than unnecessarily hostile or stupid. The characters in the sections about the past were similarly flat, and I never managed to figure out why Ashleigh was ever friends with any of them, especially when they never spent any time trying to help her out. I could not even manage to figure out why Ashleigh was so attached to Kaleb, since the novel doesn't spend much time on their relationship before Kaleb heads to college and Ashleigh goes into "crazy jealous" mode. Her irrational behavior made me dislike Ashleigh, if anything, and not even her "redeemed" self in the community service chapters made her any more appealing.

Not the 300 page moral lesson it could have been because of some subtle transitions, but lacking the character development and emotion that could have made it truly enjoyable.

A realistic novel portraying teen issues
By Kris
The story alters between the past when Ashleigh gets herself into the sexting scandal and the present when Ashleigh is serving time doing community service by creating a pamphlet on sexting. Through the alternating storylines, we get a better feel for who Ashleigh is and how the sexting scandal impacts her life.

It was hard to relate to Ashleigh. If I hadn't met her during community service first... if I hadn't met her after the sexting scandal changed her life... I doubt I'd have given her a chance. As it is, I have a love-hate relationship with Ashleigh. I think the biggest problem is that we come from such different areas of life. Though Ashleigh was an honors student, she is a party girl. She drinks, she makes out a lot with Kaleb, and she's clingy. She causes the breakup because of her inability to trust Kaleb, and I think she realizes this later on. And both she and Kaleb hold partial responsibility for the sexting scandal, another fact that she acknowledges.

At the same time, I do sympathize with her. The whole point of this novel is how situations can fall out of our control so easily. Ashleigh is a normal girl. And as much as I disprove of what she did, she did text the nude photo of herself out of love, though later events prove how fragile her love was. She never had sex with her boyfriend, but people begin calling her a slut, both in person and online where people have posted her picture. She's afraid to go out because she doesn't know who has seen her photo and what they'll say to her. And she has to live with the guilt at home with an angry father and disappointed mother on top of her own shame and embarrassment. All because she was desperate to keep her boyfriend's affections. Looking at her story from this light, it's really sad what happens to her.

At the center where Ashleigh puts in her community service hours, she finds healing--through research on sexting and also her meeting with Mack, a large boy who offers solid friendship and a unique, albeit brutally honest, perspective on life. Mack is a quiet guy who doesn't say much about himself; because of that, everything he says and does has significance. He doesn't rush into things. I think this is important to Ashleigh because she needs someone who doesn't judge her based off a rash decision she made while intoxicated. I also like the friendship that forms between them. It's nice to see a novel where the romance is in the past, where a guy and girl can meet without sparks flying between them.

Thousand Words is about how while a picture is said to be worth a thousand words, it still can't tell the full story. It is a story about healing, forgiveness (of both yourself and others), and the reality of life. Ashleigh and Kaleb can't undo their actions, and they have to live with what they did for the rest of their lives. What they can do, what Ashleigh chooses to do, is move forward. I like how the story ends on a note of hope before the full conclusions of all the effects of Ashleigh's actions because this is what she needed, what we need to see from her story. I recommend this for those looking for a realistic novel portraying teen issues.

Eye Opening
By Michael Hickerson
With summer winding down, Ashleigh is becoming more and more concerned about her relationship with Kaleb.

Kaleb is getting ready to head off for college but instead of wanting to spend more time with her, he's off with his baseball team buddies. At the end-of-summer epic swim party, Ashleigh tells a couple of friends about her frustration and one of them suggests that she give Kaleb something to remember her by -- a racy photo taken on her cell phone.

Ashleigh summons up her courage and instead of just sending Kaleb a topless photo, she shucks her entire bikini, snaps the picture and sends it to him. After seeing it, Kaleb is stunned and promises to keep the picture a secret.

Which is all well and good until Kaled heads off to college and he and Ashley break-up. After a huge fight, the photo in question begins to make the rounds of her classmates, eventually being distributed to the entire school and posted on-line.

While Ashleigh wishes the entire issue would just go away, it becomes less and less likely as the media catches wind of the story. It doesn't help that her father is a leader in the school district who has come under fire and the picture only lends fuel to the fire of those who oppose him.

It's books like this one that make me glad I'm not a teenager today. I'm not sure I'd survive.

Jennifer Brown's Thousand Words plays on the old adage that a picture really is worth a thousand words. It also points out how an impulsive decision can have a significant impact on not only the parties involved but others in the community. Ashleigh's photo leads to charges against her and an arrest. Kaleb's role in distributing the photo also has negative consequences for him -- some even more severe since he sent the picture after his eighteenth birthday.

In all of this, Ashleigh struggles to understand why Kaleb would do this and why one of her friends put her name and phone number onto the photo before sending it onto others. Ashleigh's frustration and struggles with her decision and her desperate attempts to keep it a secret or contained feel utterly authentic and will linger with you long after the book is finished.

Unfortunately, I have to say that this one isn't quite as compelling as Brown's Hate List. Part of it is that the middle third of the novel feels like a lot of treading water as we wait for the other shoe to drop once the incriminating photo goes into distribution. I can see what Brown is trying to do and have us experience the ride along with Ashleigh, but it still made the middle section drag a bit too much.

Thousand Words can be a warning to not only teens but also those authority figures in their lives. Ashleigh learns the hard way that things can and will linger on-line, possibly forever. And it's fascinating to see the unintended consequences of a rash decision by a young adult and just how it can not only impact his or her life, but also the lives of those around them.

The John Lennon Letters, by John Lennon

A lifetime of letters, collected for the first time, from the legendary musician and songwriter.

John Lennon was one of the greatest songwriters the world has ever known, creator of "Help!", "Come Together", "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Imagine", and dozens more. But it was in his correspondences that he let his personality and poetry flow unguarded. Now, gathered for the first time in book form, are his letters to family, friends, strangers, and lovers from every point in his life. Funny, informative, wise, poetic, and sometimes heartbreaking, his letters illuminate a never-before-seen intimate side of the private genius.

This groundbreaking collection of almost 300 letters and postcards has been edited and annotated by Hunter Davies, whose authorized biography The Beatles (1968) was published to great acclaim. With unparalleled knowledge of Lennon and his contemporaries, Davies reads between the lines of the artist's words, contextualizing them in Lennon's life and using them to reveal the man himself.

Review
"[Davies] has done a sensitive and scrupulous job collecting and annotating Lennon's letters, and the book is beautifully designed." -- Vanity Fair

"A massive deposit of freshly excavated notes, screeds, asides and howls, each lavishly reproduced and carefully annotated, 'Letters' is the most intimate book ever published about Lennon. In its revelation of the man's psychology, it far surpasses all previous accounts by wives, lovers, half-siblings, ex-aides and even the best biographers." -- James Rosen, The Washington Post

"... Lennon's collected letters -- 285 of them, richly contextualized and handsomely presented... -- make for fascinating reading." -- The New York Observer

"... a must-read for Beatles fans." -- Glamour

An "illuminating volume that shows a different, unguarded side of the man." -- Fort Worth Star-Telegram

"Fans will lap it up." -- Bloomberg

"This book makes it clear, more than ever, how lamentable it is that we lost Lennon the man." -- Maclean's

"The letters offer an opportunity to see Lennon less as icon than as human being." -- David Ulin, Los Angeles Times' Jacket Copy

Beautiful book.
By Stilson Greene
The first thing you will notice is how beautifully this book is designed. Great thought was put into the paper which has a wonderful thick and rich feel, to the tones of the overall color scheme(white and ivories) to the actual letterpress look of the typography, it's a package that had careful attention paid to it. The actual book is revelatory in that it actually gives the innermost thoughts of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. John was honest and was never afraid to say what he was feeling at the time, those feelings changed and shifted as he moved through the events of his life. The letters are funny, cruel, witty, romantic, bitter, loving, happy, sad, nasty, contrite and brutal. They are also peppered with his simple yet beautiful Thurberesque drawings and doodles. Admittedly I am an unabashed Lennon fan, this collection is a gift, allowing a glimpse into this complicated artist and icon's thoughts, but more importantly his humanity.

a little piece (peace) of john
By hb
WOW. Another birthday present from Yoko, via Hunter Davies. John's handwritten letters, reproduced with his little cartoons and all, transcribed with plenty of context. Something old, but which is new for all of John's many fans worldwide. All you need is this book as you remember John on his birthday October 9th. Don't hesitate - this is beautiful (and essential for collectors).

Lots of detail in this story of country legend
By cheri
I just finished reading this biography of Mr. Williams, and came away feeling very sad for Hank and his son Hank, Jr. Although the book chronicles the real contributions that Hank's mother and wife Audrey made in starting his career, the two women seemed to use Hank as a gravy train, with little love shown for this sad, lonely man. Particularly disgusting was the vulture like behavior exhibited immediately following his tragic death. Thank heaven he had Billie Jean, if even for a short while. She seems to be the only woman in his life that really loved him. Between his back pain and loneliness, it's no wonder he drank.
There was a lot of interesting detail in the book, sometimes too much info for my taste. Mr. Escott went into exhausting detail giving the background of practically every soul Hank ever met. Mr. Escott appears to strongly dislike Roy Acuff, which I found interesting, since the icon of country music has always been portrayed as a virtual saint. That said, Mr. Escott's descriptions of what would have most likely become of Hank and his career had he lived were very interesting, and probably true.
I wish Hank, Jr. could have known his father, it was obvious that Hank loved him, but addictions and circumstance kept them apart.
I'll listen to Hank's music with a much deeper knowledge of the pain that influenced his songs.

A good followup to Roger Williams' SING A SAD SONG
By Gerald L. Russell
Except for Jesus Christ and Robert E. Lee, no other person has affected the conscious and unconscious mind of the average Southerner as has Hank Williams.
Colin Escott's biography is less sentimental and more sensationalized than Roger Williams', but is it really more detailed? After all, you can only get so much material within a given number of pages. Nevertheless, every time you re-read this book, you pick up facts and suggestions you never noticed before.
Of course, this is necessarily true with such a complex man, a genius in his field, and whose life and death were mysterious.
My favorite anecdote concerning Hank is missing from both books and is related by his steel guitarist, Don Helms: Once, playing an outdoor venue, it began to rain on Hank and his band. Hank and the band retreated to a covered stage area, where they continued the show. Looking over the audience, who were getting soaked, Hank had compassion on his musical followers, and returned to the rain. "If you're good enough to listen to me in the rain, I'm good enough to play for you in the rain!" And he did.
There you have it--a man with godlike qualities but yet a complete lack of pretense and who cared for his listeners like no one ever has. This is why you should pick up a copy of this for yourself and a copy to pass down to your grandchildren. We should never let this man's memory die.

Experts now suggest a new reason for doing so: maximizing flavor - which is too often masked by meat-based stocks or butter and cream. The Vegetarian Flavor Bible is an essential guide to culinary creativity, based on insights from dozens of leading American chefs, representing such acclaimed restaurants as Crossroads and M.A.K.E. in Los Angeles; Candle 79, Dirt Candy, and Kajitsu in New York City, Green Zebra in Chicago, Greens and Millennium in San Francisco, Natural Selection and Portobello in Portland, Plum Bistro in Seattle, and Vedge in Philadelphia.

Emphasizing plant-based whole foods including vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, the book provides an A-to-Z listing of hundreds of ingredients, from açaí to zucchini blossoms, cross-referenced with the herbs, spices, and other seasonings that best enhance their flavor, resulting in thousands of recommended pairings. The Vegetarian Flavor Bible is the ideal reference for the way millions of people cook and eat today-- vegetarians, vegans, and omnivores alike. This groundbreaking book will empower both home cooks and professional chefs to create more compassionate, healthful, and flavorful cuisine.

"The cuisine of the next ten years will be vegetarian."
--Chef Joel Robuchon

"In an expectation-thwarting move, during [spring and summer] Noma will become a fully vegetarian restaurant."
--The New York Times (9/16/15)

Dear Readers,

Yesterday, The New York Times reported that the world's #1 restaurant Noma planned to shift to a vegetarian menu for half the year.

While many seemed surprised or even shocked, we weren't.  Less than a year ago, celebrated chef Joel Robuchon had declared that vegetarianism is the cuisine of the coming decade -- and we've seen scores of other leading chefs moving in that direction, through reducing meat on their menus (e.g., Dan Barber, Alain Ducasse) and/or offering vegetarian and even vegan tasting menus (e.g., Daniel Boulud, Daniel Humm, Thomas Keller, Patrick O'Connell).

There are countless reasons that professional chefs and home cooks alike will want to learn more about cooking meatless meals.  And we have poured our hearts into creating just the resource for you:  THE VEGETARIAN FLAVOR BIBLE.  In January of this year, the Los Angeles Times reported that EatYourBooks.com ranked it "The #5 Cookbook of 2014."

The site had amalgamated 300 lists of "The Best Cookbooks of 2014" produced by leading newspapers (including the Chicago Tribune, Globe and Mail, and Washington Post), magazines (e.g., Food & Wine), radio shows (e.g., KCRW's "Good Food" and WBEZ's "Chewing the Fat"), blogs, and booksellers.  These lists represented 2,713 votes for 811 different cookbooks, which were culled to a "Top 10."  We were thrilled to see our latest labor of love among the top five.

As two life-long omnivores who regularly ate meat two to three times a day, we both transitioned to a whole-foods, plant-strong diet in May 2012 -- and no one could be more surprised than the two of us to discover how amazing this change has been.  We've found ourselves effortlessly lighter (to the tune of 25+ pounds each), happier, and more focused.  Best of all, our understanding of flavor has been growing by leaps and bounds as we've come to realize that any dish's flavor profile is rooted primarily in its vegetables, herbs, and spices.

So THE VEGETARIAN FLAVOR BIBLE is as ideal a resource for omnivores as it is for vegivores.  At 50 percent longer than our 2008 title THE FLAVOR BIBLE (which was cited by Forbes as one of the world's 10 best cookbooks of the past century), our latest book delves into much greater detail about a significantly wider range of plant-based ingredients, including vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, and more -- exactly the kind of ingredients you've no doubt been using more frequently in your kitchen to keep your body healthy and your taste buds inspired.

Whether you're already among the 54 percent of Americans looking to reduce or eliminate meat from your diet through a vegan (2%), vegetarian (5%) or semi-vegetarian (47%) lifestyle, or whether you're just looking to add more uber-healthful vegetables to your diet, get ready to see your creativity AND your food's flavor skyrocket the minute you put this book to work in YOUR kitchen!

Delicious wishes,
Karen Page & Andrew Dornenburg
New York City

From the Inside Flap
THE FLAVOR BIBLE revolutionized the way hundreds of thousands of home cooks and professional chefs create new dishes by "[setting] down in print what has often been believed inexpressible" (Booklist).  Based on compatible flavors instead of recipes, it was named one of the world's ten best cookbooks of the past century by Forbes.  Now, Karen Page brings us THE VEGETARIAN FLAVOR BIBLE, a landmark book that provides an essential reference for flavor pairings and affinities to help usher in today's emerging vegetable-driven cuisine, which embraces healthfulness, compassion, creativity, and flavor.

In this inspiring masterwork spanning history, nutrition, and gastronomy, the two-time James Beard Award-winning author draws on advice from dozens of leading experts, representing such acclaimed vegetarian restaurants as Candle 79, Crossroads, Dirt Candy, Green Zebra, Greens, Kajitsu, M.A.K.E., Millennium, Natural Selection, Plum Bistro, Portobello, and Vedge -- not to mention fine-dining restaurants serving some of America's best vegetarian tasting menus, including Blue Hill, Daniel, Eleven Madison Park, the French Laundry, the Inn at Little Washington, Melisse, Oleana, Per Se, Picholine, and Topolobampo -- and distills their insights into flavor pairings and ingredient usage.

The heart of THE VEGETARIAN FLAVOR BIBLE is its A-to-Z guide to the herbs, spices, and other seasonings that best enhance the flavor of hundreds of ingredients, from acai to zucchini blossoms.  This indispensable book also features:

- Flavor profiles of hundreds of foods -- along with their peak seasons, botanical relatives, possible substitutes, nutritional profiles, flavor pairings and affinities, dish ideas, and other cooking tips for each
- An alphabetical list of idea starters -- including cuisines, ingredients, meal occasions, seasons, and tastes -- to inspire your next sweet or savory creation
- Techniques that today's leading-edge vegetable-loving chefs use to maximize flavor
- Tips for making vegetarian versions of standard dishes and for veganizing vegetarian dishes
- A chef's eye view of the subject, thanks to more than a hundred four-color photographs by Andrew Dornenburg

Like THE FLAVOR BIBLE (and CULINARY ARTISTRY) before it, THE VEGETARIAN FLAVOR BIBLE is destined to become a culinary world classic that will help countless intuitive cooks elevate plant-based cooking to a whole new level.

Invaluable resource! Extraordinary. Earns a permanent spot on my bookshelf!
By joosyfroot
Oh my goodness, YESS!! I didn't know this book existed until today when I came across it at a very cute independent book store. How did I miss this? When did this come out?? I thumbed through it and it was a MUST HAVE. Its everything I could want to compliment the first The Flavor Bible: The Essential Guide to Culinary Creativity, Based on the Wisdom of America's Most Imaginative Chefs, which is one of my most-used and all-time favorite books. This Vegetarian Flavor Bible is all about "G-BOMBS", the most nutritionally dense foods for a healthful daily diet: Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries, and Seeds.

Before I dive into a deeper review, you can pick this up brand new on eBay through Barnes & Noble direct seller and other online sellers right now for about $25. I got mine at the store, but bought another through eBay already for a gift!

I've purchased a lot of cookbooks in the last 10 years, and I've grown to be way more discerning in the last year of what books I will allow myself to buy. Many of my more recent books have focused on plant based foods. I used to be a big meat lover, and I still do enjoy a good piece of meat from time to time, but my body craves vegetables--and lots of them--all the time! This Vegetarian Flavor Bible was love at first sight. Its bigger (in a good way, not excessive bulk), and its got a ton of information, which all translates into more flavor pairings, whether you're using 1 vegetable or combining multiple vegetables.

It follows the same format as The Flavor Bible. For those unfamiliar with the format, this is NOT a cookbook. It is more like an encyclopedia of ingredients, organized alphabetically, with lists of ingredients/foods that will pair well with that item. Save yourself a lot less waste in the kitchen by taking a vegetable you have in the fridge, flip to the ingredient in the book, and you've got a list of other ingredients you can combine with your chosen vegetable to create a familiar dish or even a new flavor pairing. This book makes it easy to create that "something else" by using other ingredients you have on hand already.

So, if you're ever wondering what will taste good with what, or how do I make (fill in the blank) taste better? Get this book. If you love to cook and make dishes "your own", this book is amazing and you will not regret your purchase. If you're unsure about this, maybe try the original Flavor Bible first because there are plenty of more common vegetables in that one. This contains endless flavor combinations and tips and tidbits of information from some of the most experienced and celebrated chefs in the world. The original one helped me to really intensify and strengthen flavors in anything I was cooking and over the years, friends have claimed I'm a good cook, LOL, but the secret is The Flavor Bible. I'm excited to dive into this Vegetarian Flavor Bible now and I'm confidence this will have a permanent space on my bookshelf now too. =)

Lastly, to quote the author, Karen Page, "If you master a single recipe, you'll learn how to cook a single dish. If you master the dynamics of flavor, you can make anything taste better."

but The Flavor Bible is the most useful book in my kitchen
By Laura Day
I am NOT a vegetarian, but The Flavor Bible is the most useful book in my kitchen, so as soon as I heard about The Vegetarian Flavor Bible I ordered it. It's hard to believe that it is even bigger and even better than the original. I'm very happy to have it as a guide to cooking with vegetables, grains, beans, mushrooms, and much more.

I have ordered one for all of my friends as gifts this year.

The photo's are beautiful and the presentation is more like a tabletop book than a cookbook.
