Gr 5-7-Rafe Khatchadorian is artistic, uber creative, and prone to embellishing stories. In James Patterson and Chris Tebbetts's hilarious sequel (2012) to Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life (2011, both Little, Brown), Rafe relates his adventures during the seventh grade. When his mother loses her job, the family is forced to move into the city with grandma. Her house is tiny and crowded, and she keeps calling Rafe by the wrong name. Rafe is accepted into the prestigious Cathedral School of the Arts, and he makes his first "real, live human friend" since starting middle school. Things are looking up, but not for long. The trouble begins with a couple of bullies at school and continues when Rafe decides to embark on a mission to "get a life." What ensues is a tale of things broken-families, water balloons, artwork, and trust. Bryan Kennedy perfectly voices Rafe, expertly navigating his ups and downs. Have the book available so students can peruse Laura Park's illustrations. This fast-paced tale of middle school mishaps and mayhem will appeal to reluctant readers and students who enjoyed Jeff Kinney's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series.-Lisa Hubler, Charles F. Hilarious! My Middle School Students Loved This Book
By Shawn S
This is a fantastic read for anyone in middle school or about to go into middle school. I'm an elementary school teacher. I gave this book to one of my boy students who is in fifth grade and who is a reluctant reader. I've never seen him so excited about a book. He couldn't put it down during our reading periods. When he finished, he asked me for something else to read. The pictures are hilarious and the main character has a great way of talking to kids an relating to them. I passed it to another student and he loved it as well. Your kids will love it, too!

Constant action and high energy, nonstop comedy, and zillions of funny drawings
By KidsReads
Rafe Khatchadorian barely survived the sixth grade, but with the help of his teacher, he was accepted to Airbrook Arts Community School. Life is looking up, and Rafe anticipates expanding his art talents. But then disaster strikes. Rafe's mom loses her job and is forced to move to the big city and live with Grandma Dotty. It's not an ideal situation because Grandma Dotty's house is small and crowded, forcing Rafe to sleep on the living room sofa. Rafe's mom searches for a new job, but she isn't having any luck. Fortunately, Rafe is accepted to a different art school, where he meets Matty the Freak, who becomes his first real live friend.
Then comes Rafe's first art assignment critique, where the students hang their artwork in front of the entire class for everyone's comments. It doesn't go well, and Rafe gains a new enemy. But according to his teacher, art and life are very interconnected, and Rafe decides that in order to improve his art, he needs to expand his experiences. So he creates a brand new mission. Operation "Get A Life" challenges Rafe to discover 195 new experiences in 195 days, the number of days he has until the big spring art show at school. He has a lot of work ahead of him in order to accomplish his goal, and Matty the Freak is there for him.

Matty also proves to be a big help when Rafe decides to track down information on his father, whom he hasn't seen since he was little. However, Grandma Dotty has some photos, and Rafe utilizes his detective skills to crack the case. Of course, experiencing life isn't all about good stuff. Unfortunately, the combination of Rafe's active imagination, his mission, and Matty the Freak land him in trouble over and over again. Not only will Rafe's imagination have to work overtime in order to accomplish his goal and track down his dad, it will need to come up with ways to endure the many punishments he finds himself earning along the way. But Rafe is ready for the challenge.

With constant action and high energy, nonstop comedy, and zillions of funny drawings, this is a perfect series for both reluctant and adamant readers. Authors James Patterson and Chris Tebbetts, along with illustrator Laura Park, even add in a bit of mystery as Rafe tries to track down information on his missing father. Kids will relate to and bond with Rafe, who is hilariously funny but has trouble making friends and often gets into massive trouble thanks to his incredible imagination. Rafe has a good heart, though, and he exposes it in his search to experience life to the fullest. Fans will be thrilled to learn that a third Middle School adventure is in the works.

Charming and real
By Dora K
Fun, realistic, totally honest book about the ups and downs (mostly downs) of being a middle schooler. Anybody who has a middle-schooler, or who has ever been one, will surely relate. Rafe Khatchadorian is the perfect Everyman (Everykid?) -- a typical pre-teen who's just trying to find his footing in a tricky world. It's filled with issues and ideas to talk about, as a family...as well as charming illustrations that make the book even more fun.

Egg: A Culinary Exploration of the World's Most Versatile Ingredient, by Michael Ruhlman

In this innovative cookbook, James Beard award-winning author Michael Ruhlman explains why the egg is the key to the craft of cooking.
For culinary visionary Michael Ruhlman, the question is not whether the chicken or the egg came first, it's how anything could be accomplished in the kitchen without the magic of the common egg. He starts with perfect poached and scrambled eggs and builds up to brioche and Italian meringue. Along the way readers learn to make their own mayonnaise, pasta, custards, quiches, cakes, and other preparations that rely fundamentally on the hidden powers of the egg.

A unique framework for the book is provided in Ruhlman's egg flowchart, which starts with the whole egg at the top and branches out to describe its many uses and preparations -- boiled, pressure-cooked, poached, fried, coddled, separated, worked into batters and doughs, and more. A removable illustrated flowchart is included with the book.

Nearly 100 recipes are grouped by technique and range from simple (Egg Salad with Tarragon and Chives) to sophisticated (nougat). Dozens of step-by-step photographs guide the home cook through this remarkable culinary journey.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* If there is a single indispensable ingredient in cooking, it has to be the egg. It binds together the humble meatloaf, gives dramatic height to an elegant soufflé, renders a hollandaise sauce silky on the tongue, and clarifies a cloudy broth. It appears at every daily meal, from breakfast omelet to pasta lunch to dinner shrimp tempura, and in every meal course, from appetizer deviled egg through entrée chicken fricassee to floating-island dessert. Ruhlman deftly analyzes the egg’s culinary role, deconstructing it into white and yolk and cooking it by itself as, say, a poached egg or combining it with seafood in a sophisticated roulade. Sharp photographs by the author’s wife illustrate techniques and demystify such complexities as braiding a loaf of challah, and they guide the cook to successful culinary results almost as well as if Ruhlman himself were standing at elbow. A must-purchase for cookbook collections, this book invites the reader to understand as much as to execute. --Mark Knoblauch

Great Cookbook, But Not My Favorite Ruhlman Cookbook.
By E. Smith
I love Ruhlman's Twenty. Naturally, when I saw that he had a new cookbook being released, I pre-ordered it months in advance. Ruhlman and I, a novice home-cook, think alike: eggs are cheap and easy to cook. Naturally, I was very excited to receive Egg.

I appreciate the finer cooking points on how to poach an egg properly and reminding me to coddle my eggs. However, I don't consider coddled eggs with truffle butter a true recipe. I tried the new technique for scrambled eggs (in a water bath). The technique is great and I would recommend it for brunch or dieters. The cakes look great (I haven't had a chance to make one yet, but I look forward to it). The quiche looks like my favorite quiche from Jane in San Francisco. I can't wait to make the marshmallows (Jane adds a marshmallow to their mochas).

Ruhlman is a great author. I really appreciate all the tips and tricks he adds to his cookbooks, including Egg. All in all, I took off one star because I like pictures. Egg is lacking pictures. I love all of Ruhlman's Twenty pictures.

Would I buy Egg again? Yes. Would I buy Egg for a friend? Yes. Do I enjoy cooking from Egg? Yes. However, Ruhlman's Twenty is still my favorite cookbook.

Update 3/15: The chocolate sponge cake recipe is my go-to recipe for all chocolate sponge cakes. When I make the sponge cake, I receive many compliments on the sponge cake.

Eggcellent!
By Sondra McClendon
As a true culinary visionary, Michael Ruhlman asks of the kitchen staple the egg, "What can't it do?!"

Recipes in Egg include Italian meringue, quiche, custards, and even condiments like mayonnaise. One of the most intriguing facets of Ruhlman's book is his flowchat that depicts the many uses and ways of preparing eggs. This helpful sheet is removable (!) for easy pinning on the fridge. Since I am trying to incorporate more of this healthy and affordable protein into my weekly menu, this is a huge plus.

Other reasons I recommend this book...
- Nearly 100 recipes organized into easy groupings
- Step-by-step photographs guide you along the way
- Everything you wanted to know about buying eggs
- Recipes that put a new spin on traditional favorites, for as he says, "there is nothing that isn't improved when you put a well-cooked egg on top of it"

On a final note - its good to get the good word from an expert like Ruhlman! He has studied cooking for over 20 years and written many successful cookbooks like The Making of a Chef as well as a great non-food related expose Wooden Boats. While it may not be the most diverse book about eggs on the market or as specific as The Art of Cooking Omelettes, Ruhlman's new book about "this really fabulous, versatile ingredient" is defintely helpful for those who want to crack into eggs in a new way.

Almost an amazing cookbook
By DarthClem
Michael Ruhlman is a combination of who we are and who we want to be. He's a down to earth guy with a passion for cooking (who most of us are) who has become an almost unparalleled master at the culinary arts (who most of us want to be). I consider "Ruhlman's Twenty" to be one of the finest books written for an aspiring home chef, and "Egg" comes very close to being Twenty's equal.

In "Egg", Ruhlman takes the simple egg and demonstrates why it truly is not only "the most versatile ingredient", but also one of the most magnificent. Through the multitude of recipes, he shows how the egg can play both the lead role or the supporting character in every dish from breakfast to dessert.

Big credit must also go to Donna Ruhlman for her stunning photography highlighted throughout the book. Seriously, I challenge you to look at any picture in this book and not think (or say out loud), "oh, I gotta make that". In fact, one of my complaints about "Egg" is that while some recipes have multiple pictures, you can find yourself going through a stretch of several recipes that have none.

Another little complaint I have about "Egg" is that sometimes, it feels like there are little details omitted in his recipes. For example, in one of his soft-cooked egg recipes, he says that you can use the pressure cooker method, but only for 4 minutes. It was unclear if that meant mimicking the pressure cooker hard-cooked egg exactly, but only for 4 minutes -- so that's what I did and wound up with was still basically a hard-cooked egg. Maybe for soft-cooked, I was supposed to immediately cool the pressure cooker under cold water and then get the egg into ice water? I don't know, because he doesn't say.

Those minor complaints aside, "Egg" is almost worth the price just for two recipes: the above mentioned pressured cooker hard-cooked eggs (so easy to peel and the most perfect yolks ever) and double boiler scrambled eggs. I've seen Heston Blumenthal use the double boiler method but didn't try it until I got "Egg". I've never tasted such rich, moist, delicious scrambled eggs. They are well worth the additional time it takes to make them. A couple of tips on the scrambled eggs -- use truffle butter instead of regular butter (mind-blowing), and be aware that as soon as the eggs start to curdle, they progress to being done very quickly.

American Spring: Lexington, Concord, and the Road to Revolution, by Walter R. Borneman

A vibrant new look at the American Revolution's first months, from the author of the bestseller The Admirals

When we reflect on our nation's history, the American Revolution can feel almost like a foregone conclusion. In reality, the first weeks and months of 1775 were very tenuous, and a fractured and ragtag group of colonial militias had to coalesce rapidly to have even the slimmest chance of toppling the mighty British Army.

AMERICAN SPRING follows a fledgling nation from Paul Revere's little-known ride of December 1774 and the first shots fired on Lexington Green through the catastrophic Battle of Bunker Hill, culminating with a Virginian named George Washington taking command of colonial forces on July 3, 1775.

Focusing on the colorful heroes John Hancock, Samuel Adams, Mercy Otis Warren, Benjamin Franklin, and Patrick Henry, and the ordinary Americans caught up in the revolution, Walter R. Borneman uses newly available sources and research to tell the story of how a decade of discontent erupted into an armed rebellion that forged our nation.

From Booklist
Popular military historian Borneman (1812, 2004; The Admirals, 2012) presents the outbreak of the American War of Independence in 1775. As the arc of his narrative touches the familiar landmarks, from the Battle of Lexington to the Battle of Bunker Hill, an avid American history buff will look for what distinguishes Borneman’s account and find it in two respects, debate with prior historians on disputed points (e.g., responsibility for the first shot fired at Lexington) and thematic emphasis of the pressure on individuals to choose sides, with the rebels or the loyalists, as political polarization galloped apace in early 1775. With Benjamin Franklin’s family as one of several examples of divided sentiments, Borneman constructs a general narrative that depicts British operations around Boston to seize the patriots’ military supplies, one of which, of course, ignited the explosion at Lexington and Concord. Including supporting scenes, such as debate in the Continental Congress, Borneman’s saga proves to be capably constructed and accessible to an audience looking for an introduction to these epic events in American history. --Gilbert Taylor

Review
Praise for American Spring:

"Likely to be one of the enduring accounts of the opening of the American Revolution.... Loaded with intriguing details, sort of historical nonpareil candies sprinkled throughout the account.... A pleasing marriage of scholarly research and approachable language."―David Shribman, Boston Globe

"Walter Borneman has written an engaging and illuminating account of some of the most critical weeks in American history. Here is how it all began." -- Jon Meacham, author of Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power

"Borneman delivers a gripping, almost moment-by-moment account of the nasty exchanges and bloody retreat of British troops followed by hundreds and then thousands of militia who camped around Boston and laid siege.... A first-rate contribution."―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Praise for The Admirals:

"Superbly reported... Historian Walter R. Borneman tackles the essential question of military leadership: What makes some men, but not others, able to motivate a fighting force into battle?" -- Tony Perry, Los Angeles Times

"Engagingly written and deeply researched... Mr. Borneman makes it easy to understand the complex series of maneuvers and counter-maneuvers at Leyte Gulf...which is not always the case with accounts of the battle." -- Andrew Roberts, Wall Street Journal

"The first book to deal with the four [admirals] together, focusing on their intertwined lives, friendships, and rivalries.... Very well-crafted." -- John Lehman, Washington Post

"A riveting introduction to the only four men in American history to have been promoted to the five-star rank of Admiral of the Fleet in recognition of their extraordinary feats." -- The History Channel

"An epic group portrait of Nimitz, Halsey, Leahey, and King. Not since the heyday of Samuel Eliot Morison has a historian painted such a fine portrait of the five-star admirals who helped America beat Japan during the Second World War. Highly recommended!" -- Douglas Brinkley, Professor of History at Rice University and author of The Wilderness Warrior

"They were completely different in temperament and personality, but the U.S. Navy's four five-star admirals in World War II shared a sense of vision, devotion, and courage. Walter Borneman has written a rousing tale of victory at sea." -- Evan Thomas, author of The War Lovers

"This is Walter Borneman at his best. The portrait of the forgotten admiral, Leahy, is worth the whole book. But there's scarcely a page where a reader won't learn something unexpected, and occasionally shocking." -- Thomas Fleming, author of Time and Tide

About the Author
Walter Borneman is the author of eight works of nonfiction, including The Admirals, 1812, The French and Indian War, and Polk. He holds both a master's degree in history and a law degree. He lives in Colorado.

A Refreshing Look at the Roots of the Revolution
By troutguy
In his fast-moving treatise on the origins of the American Revolution, Walter Borneman examines the critical first six months of 1775. Focusing on personages and events surrounding Boston, the book rightfully casts American rebels Sam and John Adams, John Hancock, Paul Revere and Joseph Warren in key roles, but gives prominent British officers like Thomas Gage, Lord Percy and William Howe respectful treatment as well. Borneman is not content to merely retell stories that have attained legendary status, but digs deeply into many primary sources in order to paint a fuller picture of events than is usually offered. His particular attention to the roles of women and minorities is helpful to this end. Those who enjoy rehearsing the political ferment of the time will enjoy Borneman's insights on Ben Franklin's diplomacy and the intrigue surrounding General Gage's wife, Margaret. Military historians will delight in the very detailed recounting of the battles of Lexington, Concord, Bunker Hill, and the lesser-known "naval" battles of Grape and Noddle's Islands. American Spring's strength lies in taking the reader into the heart of the action, whether it is with John Adams and his verbal sparring with 'Massachusettensis' or digging fortifications with Israel Putnam. Readers looking for a "sense of the times" and a refreshing variety of personal perspectives on the impending revolution will find many treasures in this highly readable work.

Homeschooling takes on a whole new meaning when home is a sailing ship and you have the world’s coolest parents. Not that it matters after your mom goes missing in Cyprus, and, a few months later, your dad (a renowned treasure hunter and oceanographer) disappears from your ship’s deck during a fierce storm in the Caribbean. Along with their older brother and sister, twins Bick and Beck vow to carry on the family treasure-hunting business despite the dangers posed by a vicious rival and his minions, including modern-day pirates in sometimes ludicrous disguises. When not dealing with threats or searching for treasure, the kids wonder which seemingly helpful adults they can trust. Bick narrates the story, while Beck illustrates it. From kidnapping to underwater speargun fights, action is the name of the game here, bolstered by bits of comedy. Although the premise and plot are wholly unconvincing, the fast-paced, first-person narrative is entertaining. With 10 treasures (not to mention two parents) waiting to be discovered, it looks like a new series is on the horizon. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: It’s a new series co-authored by the #1 New York Times best-selling Patterson. Get ready for demand-ho! Grades 4-6. --Carolyn Phelan

Couldn't put it down!
By love shoes
My son could not wait for this book to publish after reading the first "Treasure Hunters" book. He read it in two days. He is already excited for book three! These are his favorite books and I am grateful to James Patterson for writing books full of adventure that inspire a love for reading! The first books my son could not put down. He took them wherever we had to go! One woman even commented "it is so nice to see a child with a book in his hands instead of a gaming device." Thank you James Patterson!

a book worth reading
By Khaila
This book is so worth reading. Not only being for kids it would be a good book for adults as well. The story is full of funny tales and stories kids and adults should get to experience. Although you may want to read this book right away you should read the first book...well first! Treasure hunters is a good book maybe even a little better than this one (not really). This is why I can not wait until the third book comes out keep it up James Patterson because I just love your books. Anyway if you get the chance you should read this book. I have to say storm is my favorite character. If you read the book and rate it tell what your favorite character is too!

My 6 year old enjoyed it, but I didn't
By JP
The book is okay. My 6 year old enjoyed it, but I didn't. James Patterson doesn't actually write his books, he writes part of it or simply creates an idea and passes it off. Normally I don't care, but this book had a clear line where it sounded like another author stepped in. The whole tone of the book changed as well as the level of violence and gun references. Very odd to read, it was like a grade school project where the teacher hands you a partially written story and asks you to finish it. I wouldn't recommend it for little kids (less than 10) since there is violence and implied death, especially of the parents. The geography portion is educational, but in the copy I had the map of the US was drawn wrong. Not sure if that made it to the final copies.

A brilliant debut mystery in a classic vein: Detective Cormoran Strike investigates a supermodel's suicide.

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office.

Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, thelegendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

You may think you know detectives, but you've never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this.

Introducing Cormoran Strike, this is the acclaimed first crime novel by J.K. Rowling, writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

From Booklist
London PI Cormoran Strike’s final feud with his arguably insane fiancée leaves him camping in his office, wondering how his last two clients will keep him afloat and pay for his new secretary, Robin. When a childhood acquaintance asks him to investigate his supermodel sister’s apparent suicide, Strike finds a distraction from his problems that’s happily attached to a check. Lula Landry was surrounded by rabid paparazzi, a drug-addled social circle, a dysfunctional adopted family, and a shifty, newly found birth mother, making suicidal despair hard to dismiss. But with Robin’s surprisingly adept assistance, Strike dismantles witness statements, applying masterful deductive skills to find evidence of murder. This debut is instantly absorbing, featuring a detective facing crumbling circumstances with resolve instead of clichéd self-destruction and a lovable sidekick with contagious enthusiasm for detection. Galbraith nimbly sidesteps celebrity superficiality, instead exploring the ugly truths in Lula’s six degrees of separation. Strike bears little resemblance to Jackson Brodie, but Kate Atkinson’s fans will appreciate his reliance on deduction and observation along with Galbraith’s skilled storytelling. --Christine Tran

Review
"One of the books of the year."―USA Today

"Robert Galbraith has written a highly entertaining book... Even better, he has introduced an appealing protagonist in Strike, who's sure to be the star of many sequels to come.... its narrative moves forward with propulsive suspense. More important, Strike and his now-permanent assistant, Robin (playing Nora to his Nick, Salander to his Blomkvist), have become a team--a team whose further adventures the reader cannot help eagerly awaiting."―Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

"Rowling switches genres seamlessly...a gritty, absorbing tale."―People (3.5 out of 4 stars)

"[Rowling's] literary gift is on display in this work. She crafts an entertaining story [and] comes up with an ending that I'll admit I was surprised by. . . . A fun read, with a main character you can care about and one you'll want to see again in other adventures."―Washington Post

"An extravagant, alien, fascinating world for its characters to explore...great pleasures."―Slate.com

Great Read!
By Karen
This book is so well written that I suspect that some years down the road we will hear the author's name is a pseudonym of some famous writer. Lots of description made one feel like another occupant in the scene. You could feel the weather, the tension, the pain, the atmosphere in the gatherings. The Audible version had great accents. It is a wonderful mystery with a surprise ending, and I look forward to more by the same author.

Great read -I really liked it
By Michael Tavella
Ok, so I bought this book never having read a word of J.K Rowling in my life.I bought it because I love the detective genre. I have read almost all of Raymond chandler, and Earl Stanley Gardner and I was skeptical about what she could do. Well, I quickly found that she had selected a standard plot-a suicide that was being investigated as a murder. There were cliché's, but even the best rely on the cops being dumb and the detective being smart. She was not trying to turn the genre on it's head, just put a new example out there. Based on that, I was deeply impressed. Here was a well written meticulous work that built the pieces of the puzzle into a complex maze. I thought I had the ending, but I was wrong-and surprised. The way the details were developed was masterful. The characters were interesting and likable.

As for the book being "slow", I suggest that if you want to read slow books read J. R.R. Martin. They are 5 slow books. This book moved right along and had none of the filler I have found in some of the more modern novels I have recently read.

For those who complain about this being one cliché after another, that's like saying all landscapes are alike. It is not the framework of the plot that matters it is what the author does with that framework-and she has done a magnificent job with it! THe work is often -but the people she is portraying are often vulgar. Even through the ending was somewhat predictable (not the solution to the murder but what happens after the solution is delivered), it was good to have a happy ending-and at least the author knows how to end a story...unlike the aforementioned Mr. Martin.....

All around a great read. I want to read more from her in this genera.

East End Girls and West End Boys
By Keris Nine
It's hard to put your finger on exactly what it is that makes The Cuckoo's Calling such a terrific new Private Investigator crime fiction debut. On the surface it seems straightforward, unexceptional and unambitious, everything fits the established conventions, there's nothing immediately new that stands out, and yet it's an utterly compelling read with strong characters that wraps you up completely and thrillingly into the investigation.

There's certainly nothing significantly new in the nature of the Private Detective at the centre of the book and series. Yes, the circumstances are a little different and the family background a little more colourful than most, but at heart, Cormoran Strike doesn't stray too far from the template - ex-army rather than ex-police, with a complicated personal life, a detective business that is on its last legs (no pun intended on Strike's service injury), clients are drying up, the loan that has set him up in London's Denmark Street is being called in and he's in the middle of a messy break-up with his fiancée. Nothing particularly noteworthy so far, not even the fact that the temp agency has just landed him with a new partner - sorry, a new secretary, Robin, who is only supposed to be around for a few weeks, but of course ends up making herself quite useful, not to say even indispensable, creating the obligatory mismatched team in the process.

There's nothing particularly exceptional either about the high profile case - the death of a supermodel - that lands in his lap and keeps the wolves away from the door just that little bit longer. Falling to her death from her third-floor Mayfair apartment, the verdict of suicide is obviously not accepted by the distraught brother of the family that had adopted her, even though she clearly had problems in the run up to her death, much of it stemming from a troubled relationship with her boyfriend, a Pete Doherty-style musician. For some reason there is particular emphasis made of the setting and the timing of the case, setting it specifically in London in 2010, in the last days of the Brown Labour government, without there seeming to be any particular social or political point to be drawn from this. Or perhaps there is some significance in the Amy Winehouse/Kate Moss celebrity lifestyle issues and pre-press hacking revelations that is worth exploring or considering. Even so, it hardly seems to be a subject that is going to make any major revelations.

And yet, The Cuckoo's Calling does indeed prove to be utterly compelling in its depiction of every aspect of this world that the investigation delves into. Like the main investigator team, the various colourful characters that they come into contact with during the investigation do often appear to fit standard types - film producers, fashion designers and big business corporate types on one side, contrasted that with ordinary working class security guards, chauffeurs, hangers-on and wannabes from the other side of London. Every bit of behaviour and every line of dialogue however is well-chosen, precise, accurate and revealing of the nature of the characters, and all the social content that is dredged up seemingly in passing proves to be in some way relevant to the questions of identity and background that the case raises.

If it's hard to pick out anything particularly striking or original about The Cuckoo's Calling, there is however this feeling of it being of a whole. The Private Investigator and his secretary Robin are not outsiders looking in on the lives of the people in their case, but they are as much a part of the whole fabric of the work, their involvement giving an authentic dynamic that interacts with the specific case and the people involved here and gets to the heart of the matter in a surprisingly effective and realistic manner. Undoubtedly, the strength of any great new series of detective fiction lies in establishing a firm connection between the PI and the world they operate in, and Robert Galbraith's creation of Strike and Robin in the contrasts of London life is subtly masterful, but just as importantly, the case is also brought to a good resolution. This is a very fine start to what looks like being a richly rewarding new crime series.

Astray, by Emma Donoghue

A trainer coaxes his beloved elephant onto a ship carrying him to a life of fame. A mother searches for her baby girl, sent away on a train headed west. A teenage soldier wrestles with his conscience far from home.

The fascinating characters who roam the pages of Emma Donoghue's stories have all gone astray. They are emigrants, runaways, drifters, gold miners and counterfeiters, attorneys and slaves. They cross countless borders. They travel for love or money, incognito or under duress.

The celebrated author of Room transports us from Puritan Massachusetts to Revolutionary-era New Jersey, from antebellum Louisiana to a highway in Toronto, lighting up four centuries of wanderings that have profound echoes in the present and offering us a moving meditation on restless times.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Inspired by various newspaper articles and stories from the last four centuries, Booker Prize finalist Donoghue’s (Room, 2010) masterful new short story collection explores the ways people’s lives can take unexpected and unprepared-for turns. A fallen woman in Victorian England supports herself and her child by the only means available to her until her younger brother comes up with another option. As the Civil War rages on, a slave and his mistress plot a daring escape. A bitter Puritan seeks revenge upon two women who spurned him. A woman sails toward Canada to join her husband, not knowing he’s fallen gravely ill with cholera. A lawyer sets his sights on a wealthy young widow who seeks his help. A young woman makes a startling discovery about her politically powerful father after his death in New York City at the dawn of the twentieth century. Donoghue details the particular historical source that inspired her at the end of each story, and she discusses how each one fits in with her overall theme in the afterword. Revolutionary-era New Jersey, Civil War–era Texas, the gold rush Yukon, and many other settings come to life in this wonderfully imaginative, transporting collection. --Kristine Huntley

Review
"Time and again, Emma Donoghue writes books that are unlike anything I have ever seen before, and ASTRAY is no exception. There is such a deep and compassionate imagination at work in every story in this collection that ASTRAY feels almost like an act of clairvoyance."―-Ann Patchett, author of State of Wonder

"Emma Donoghue is one of the great literary ventriloquists of our time. Her imagination is kaleidoscopic. She steps borders and boundaries with great ease and style. In her hands the centuries dissolve, and then they crystallize back again into powerful words on the page."―Colum McCann, author of Let the Great World Spin

"This book demonstrates once again that there's little she can't do well; indeed, the afterword is as moving as the stories....The short story can be a precious, self-enclosed form, but in Donoghue's bold hands, it crosses continents and centuries to claim kinship with many kinds of people.... Another exciting change of pace from the protean Donoghue."―Kirkus Reviews

"...Masterful.... Revolutionary-era New Jersey, Civil War-era Texas, the gold rush Yukon, and many other settings come to life in this wonderfully imaginative, transporting collection."―Kristine Huntley, Booklist (Starred Review)

"Donoghue applies her talents for characterization and depth of feeling over and over again as she documents restless wanderers and lost souls across four generations, each in a world as strange and real as the last."―Emily Temple, Flavorpill

"Donoghue's affinity for yesteryear's untold tales is charming, and her talent for dialect is hard to overstate, which is why it's the first-person stories in ASTRAY that shine brightest....Each and every one of Donoghue's characters leaves an impression."―Time

"Donoghue establishes a distinct voice and person [and] the stories are vivid, curious, and honest..."―Publishers Weekly

"[The] tales...feel like discoveries, stories that were waiting to be told."―Stephan Lee, Entertainment Weekly

"This collection is filled with such acts of imaginative sympathy-each chiseling all that one can, from what Donoghue aptly describes as 'the shadowy mass of all that's been lost.'"―Mike Fischer, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

"The stories are taut, vivid and memorable, and the collection reveals Donoghue's remarkable gift for placing herself in the minds of people who otherwise might be lost to history."―Margaret Quamme, The Columbus Dispatch

"The stories are showcases for a wide range of speaking voices studded with period vernacular."―Sam Sacks, The Wall Street Journal

"Fans of... Room will recognize the same imaginative flexibility and ventriloquism in ASTRAY, only multiplied and lightly patinated.... A refreshing break from the trend of linked collections; each story is entirely discrete, and strong enough to be read in isolation."―Holloway McCandless, Shelf Awareness

"Haunting.... These seekers and their stories pull you in-and stir your heart."―People (4 stars)

"Splendid.... "[An] original and compelling collection."―Mameve Medwed, The Boston Globe

"From England, Canada and the United States, Donoghue has created a restless world of travelers, finders and seekers, as well as a book that is an interactive narrative hybrid, one that gets us lost in other lives, that probes our history, that reveals the artist behind the word and that ultimately shows us something fresh, unsettling and enduring about ourselves."―Caroline Leavitt, The San Francisco Chronicle

"Sensitive and intuitive...moves fearlessly between centuries and between genders.... Donoghue displays a ventriloquist's uncanny ability to slip in and out of voices....[and she] reveals them all, in their place of exile, with gentle yet devastating truth."―Brooke Allen, The New York Times Book Review

"Donoghue is...something of a literary archaeologist, speaking in voices that have been lost.... Donoghue's empathic imagination is remarkable...so convincing[] that the reader feels these stories could be actual historical narratives."―Patricia Hagen, Minneapolis Star Tribune

"A rich roster of tales [and] a real adventure in reading.... Donoghue's gift for storytelling is remarkable...."―Sandy Leonard, Lambda Literary

"Donoghue is gifted at imagining narrators from all walks of life.... Anyone who appreciates a well-told tale will enjoy these 14 short stories. It's perfect for the bedside table or the quiet commute-rich tales by a writer near the top of her game."―Rob Merrill, Associated Press

"Gentle yet devastating..."―The New York Times Book Review (Editors' Choice)

"Donoghue's ASTRAY masters the long reach of short tales.... What is most impressive about these stories is her ability to plumb historical footnotes for timeless emotional resonance and reanimate 'real people who left traces in the historical record.'"―Heller McAlpin, The Washington Post

"[An] intriguing new story collection...Change is inevitable for the migrant-and for us all. In ASTRAY, Donoghue makes us tremble at the idea and revel in its possibilities."―Connie Ogle, The Miami Herald

"We were interested to see if [Donoghue's] third-person narration skills translated well into the oftentimes more complicated vernacular of adults hailing from different eras and different corners of the globe.... In our opinion, she succeeded."―The Huffington Post

"Dazzling.... [A]ll the voices are so distinct, the plots so diverse, that the reading experience is a bit like nibbling from a long, strange, trippy literary buffet. Comedy, history, legal drama, political intrigue, adventure...all served up side by side in one volume. It's wonderful."―Maggie Galehouse, The Houston Chronicle

"Reading ASTRAY is a bit like watching a magician create a wondrous illusion before you and then reveal a few enticing hints as to how she did it."―Tarra Gaines, Houston Cultural Map

"A well-written collection of short stories that go back and forth between despair and hope."―Bobby Blanchard, The Daily Texan

"Donoghue breathes life into stories that seem like nothing more than footnotes in the grand scheme of history, but are important reminders of all the little things we miss looking at the big picture."―Sharra Rosichan, The Tennessean

"Her new and splendid collection...is all about breaking through barriers."―Boston Globe

"These stories are striking for their range and freedom.... One senses cumulatively throughout this book the capacious curiosity of Emma Donoghue's mind, and the breadth of her knowledge.... Never dull, these stories illuminate worlds like a magic lantern....Donoghue's imagination can alight upon almost anything and revivify it."―Claire Messud, The New York Review of Books

"ASTRAY is an exceptional uniting of history and imagination."―Jake Cline, The Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

"A beautifully rendered collection of hauntingly vivid short stories.... Redolent with historical details, Donoghue's tales are enthralling.... Each story is so complete that there's a sense of mourning as one comes to a close, but also a thrill as to what she will come up with next.... She could not have assembled a richer cast of characters. We sense Donoghue's compassion for all of them-even the least appealing ones like the ultra-judgmental Englishman who settles in Yarmouth or the Illinois counterfeiters who conspired to steal Abraham Lincoln's corpse. Gorgeously written and thoroughly engrossing, ASTRAY captures the uncertainty and complexity of settling into unknown turf. The voices of her characters reverberate in our heads, long after putting the book down."―Claudia Puig, USA Today (4 stars)

"[Donoghue is] one of those rare literary alchemists who can deliver a story that is both sensationally suspenseful and richly satisfying in the artistry of its sentences and the depth and seriousness of its themes."―Ed Tarkington and Chapter16.org, Nashville Scene

"Emma Donoghue's characters seem thoroughly unique and alive."―Tobias Carroll, Time Out New York

"Illuminating.... [and] affecting..."―Eileen Weiner, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

"The characters in Emma Donoghue's solid collection ASTRAY are on the move and similarly are sure to move readers."―Natalie Danford, American Way

"A strong collection.... Donoghue is first rate.... Real people can't go backward, but writers can, and Donoghue does so with great success."―Susan Balée, The Hudson Review

"The author of Room displays her mastery at inventing the speech of the most unlikely characters in this story collection.... How do people sound? That's one of the primary concerns of a writer. Get that right, and everything follows. Donoghue gets it right, as anyone who's read Room would know.... Donoghue reads like she takes a dry eraser and deletes chunks of letters and words-there's something constantly missing, and parts of the world are a mystery. But isn't that how we think to ourselves, as Joyce demonstrated, skipping over the river of thoughts and refusing to bother explaining the obvious or the visual? With such ingenuity, Donoghue achieves the effect of creating magic and wonder in the real world. To follow Donoghue into the unknown is one of the most pleasurable experiences I can think of."―Jimmy So, The Daily Beast

"Wildly informative and engaging.... Donoghue...throws the windows of the world open in fourteen stories of wanderlust, exploration, and possibilities promised by new and unknown lands.... By giving us true stories of wanderers and vagabonds in search of broader vistas, Donoghue has given narrative weight to both the journey and the destination. And in offering up history newly made into stories, Donoghue makes the journey of literary reinvention into its own reward."―Jessica Freeman-Slade, The Millions

"In...ASTRAY...imagination becomes possibility.... Moving through the centuries with her short stories, Donoghue turns everyday situations and period-piece slice-of-life situations into something of which O. Henry and Paul Harvey would be proud. Indeed, some of these tales start with a little sleight of word, poking our emotions in one way, then slowly twisting them into another direction before giving us the real story. You never know where these tales will end, and that's a good thing."―Terri Schlichenmeyer, Washington Blade

"A marvel of imagination, in which Donoghue utilizes items she's found over the years...to create unforgettable stories about change..."―Nina Sankovitch, The Huffington Post

About the Author
Born in Dublin in 1969, Emma Donoghue is an Irish emigrant twice over: she spent eight years in Cambridge, England, doing a PhD in eighteenth-century literature before moving to London, Ontario, where she lives with her partner and their two children. She also migrates between genres, writing literary history, biography, and stage and radio plays, as well as fairy tales and short stories. She is best known for her novels, which range from the historical (Slammerkin, Life Mask, The Sealed Letter) to the contemporary (Stir-Fry, Hood, Landing). Her international bestseller Room was a New York Times Best Book of 2010 and a finalist for the Man Booker, Commonwealth, and Orange Prizes. "The Hunt" (from ASTRAY) has been short-listed for the Sunday Times EFG Private Bank Short Story Award, the world's most valuable short story prize.

Another Winner from Donoghue
By J. Jamakaya
Emma Donoghue gets into the heads and hearts of her characters as few other writers do. In "Astray," her new short story collection, she adopts the points of view of a wide range of characters in different eras, places and circumstances. Memorable characters include a Calamity Jane-like woman in the American West who retrieves an errant husband out on a bender; a Creole girl who has a dramatic coming of age in antebellum Louisiana; a trainer who bonded with Jumbo before the circus elephant was shipped off from England; and a young Hessian soldier compelled to prove his `manhood' while serving with the British army in New Jersey in 1776.

In a revealing Afterword, Donoghue says the idea for "Astray" came from her own experience as a two-time emigrant. She moved from her native Dublin to England for higher education, and from England to Canada for love and a family. She knows what it feels like to be a "stray" or "astray," and tells the stories of dozens of characters who are either departing, in transit or arriving at some destination, whether a physical place or a key point in their lives. The 14 stories are divided into those three categories: Departures, In Transit, and Arrivals and Aftermaths.

Each story is based on a historical person or event Donoghue uncovered in some old newspaper or archive. She brings these people and events to life by imagining their backstories and motivations. Many of the stories are told in the first person, and she is particularly adept at inhabiting the characters' psyches and expressing their feelings in the dialects, idioms and cadences of their time, place and culture.

I found "Counting the Days" and "The Lost Seed" especially good. "Counting the Days" is about a family fleeing the Irish famine of the 1840s. It juxtaposes the thoughts of an anxious wife crossing the Atlantic with the struggles of her husband who has gone before and is awaiting her in Quebec. "The Lost Seed" is quite different, a rather unpleasant but powerful tale of self-hatred and hypocrisy in Plymouth Colony in the 1630s.

Although Donoghue has been published since the mid-1990s, I had the pleasure of discovering her work in just the past year and have devoured most of her books. Her range is remarkable. Her novels, short stories, fairy tales and academic volumes are written with a clarity that makes them accessible to all readers. Whether dead serious or light in tone (there are some laugh-out-loud stories and a great piece of erotica in her collection Touchy Subjects), Donoghue never fails to be both entertaining and insightful. Slammerkin is as perfect a novel as has ever been written and is increasingly recognized as a modern classic. Room: A Novel is a thriller with great depth, an epic of survival and a profound ode to motherhood.

In the Afterword to "Astray," Donoghue says that Charles Dickens is her favorite novelist. I'm not surprised. Her prose is actually leaner than his, but in all the essentials she matches the master: great plotting, rich characters and a blazing moral intelligence. All are evident in "Astray."

You Will Not Go Astray with "Astray"
By Eric Selby
This is one of the best story collections I have ever read. I would almost suggest this: read the "Afterword" first. The stories are varied, very varied. And each is based upon actual incidents. The opening story is fascinating, about a man who saves an elephant from cruetly. Then there's a story about exhuming Abraham Lincoln's body for the purposes of extortion. One of my favorites--and I laughed all the way through it--is "The Lost Seed," set in 1639 in the Plymouth Colony. Richard Berry narrates his angst about not finding himself a bride. It is just so funny. And then there is the last story about a lesbian couple, artists, one white, one black, now living in an assisted living situation where one has Alzheimer's. It is so touching. Ms. Donoghue has such a range of styles. This is a book I will be giving as a gift. There is absolutely no way that a serious reader could give this wonderful book a low rating.

Astray
By abigail ferguson
Donoghue's new book Astray is about voyages, the voyages we take when migrating to a new life, a new country, or a new beginning. As an immigrant herself, Donoghue really captures the mindset of the transient wandering into a new land and becoming someone else. Her stories are based on facts taken from archives of people from as early as the 1800s and even Jumbo the elephant who went abroad to America in 1882, which was by far the most touching story. The book is comprised of short fictionalized accounts of these voyages and for the most part are well written. Do not expect any major character development (as they are short stories) and the book, a mere 288 pages, was a fast read. Great book for a book club, but it's not unforgettable.

Amazon.com Review
Ages 1 & up. A Mother Goose book for the nineties, Animal Crackers combines old-fashioned charm with modern sensibilities. Traditional poems and lullabies are seamlessly mixed with contemporary and multicultural works; the delightfully old-style illustrations are equally diverse. It's a lovely introduction to the world of nursery rhymes--and more.

From Publishers Weekly
Dyer (Talking Like the Rain; The Girl in the Golden Bower) surpasses her considerable achievements in other poetry collections with a volume that not only lives up to the "delectable" of the subtitle but has the power to entice youngest children to cherish the richness and diversity of both language and art. In each of seven categories-Playtime; Animals, Animals; Lullaby and Good Night; etc.-Dyer includes the best work of both traditional and contemporary poets together with pellucid watercolors that simply dazzle. She gives a faintly old-fashioned look to the faces of her multicultural cast; coupled with her bold and sophisticated designs, the images have a welcome air of timelessness and help create a view of a global community of children. Regardless of the complexity of the perspective or metaphors, Dyer grounds each illustration with details that indicate her unerring understanding of the sensibilities and interests of youngest children. This sumptuous book comes with an attached satin ribbon that will mark not only pages turned but the book's remarkable pleasures. Ages 1-5.

Attractive poetry collection to please both child and parent
By A Customer
Jane Dyer's gentle watercolor paintings enhance a thoughtful selection of the best poems and nursery rhymes for young children. Collected in thematic sections ranging from alphabet and counting rhymes through the seasons, food, animals, and playtime to lullabies and night songs, the poems feature topics to tickle a young child's imagination while presenting rhythms and rhymes that encourage enthusiastic repetition through many read-aloud sessions. Loving parents, grandparents, and gift-givers of children ages 2 to 7 will delight in sharing these child-pleasing poems over and over. Most of the contents are of English heritage, but African, Danish, Brazilian, and German traditional lullabies are also included. Oversized pages allow plenty of interplay between text and art, while the book's slim (64-page) format keeps the volume manageable even in small hands. Dyer offers a broader variety than most collections for very young children, and if her art lacks the brash humor of a Rosemary Wells (My Very First Mother Goose), it offers instead a quietly satisfying world where children smile. A fun bonus: the artist has tucked in an unheralded self-portrait on page 22--and isn't that Barry Moser eating his peas with honey at the bottom of the same page?

Wonderful Collection
By A Customer
I just received my copy of this book and can't wait to share it with my 2 year old daughter. Only problem - I purchased it for a gift and now need to buy one for her! The collection of nursery rhymes and poetry is beautifully illustrated, with oversized pages allowing maximum enjoyment for the non-reader. Definitely a must for every child's library.

A Superb Collection of Nursery Rhymes
By P. Dillhoff
Intricate details and warm tones fill the illustrations throughout this superb collection of sixty-two nursery rhymes. Dyer has incorporated a wide variety of traditional nursery rhymes such as Little Jack Horner, Humpty Dumpty, and Peter Piper along with some not so traditional, such as Grandpa Bear's Lullaby, Animal Crackers, and All Asleep. She has divided this medley of rhymes into seven unique sections, including "Nursery Rhymes," "Animals, Animals," and "Lullaby and Good Night." These divisions make it easy to find rhymes for specific occasions or themes. Each rhyme is delightfully and intricately illustrated with warm watercolors which encompass the entire page. These illustrations invite the reader to become more involved in the story. This anthology of nursery rhymes is appropriate for the emergent reader because of the familiar text throughout the story. Dyer's intricate watercolors will help young children focus on the pictures to help create meaning. This well-designed collection of rhymes will be a valuable addition to any young child's personal library.
