Amazon.com Review
Penzler Pick, June 2001: This is Daniel Woodrell's third book set in the Ozarks and, like the other two, Give Us a Kiss and Tomato Red, it peels back the layers from lives already made bare by poverty and petty crime, exposing the reader to the raw everyday hopes and fears of the poor and the helpless.

Told through the voice of an overweight 13-year-old boy named Shuggy Atkins, this is the story of Shug; the one person who loves him, his mother Glenda; and her boyfriend Red, a brutal and ignorant man. Red hates Shug but uses him to break into houses to steal drugs and anything else that can be sold. Glenda makes a meager living looking after the local cemetery and spends her time trying to keep Red amused and away from Shug, whom he loves to humiliate but whom she adores. Glenda is Shug's only champion. She calls him Sweet Mister as she continually boosts his confidence and promises a better life for him, if not for herself.

But when Glenda sees a beautiful, green Thunderbird with leather seats and its driver, Jimmy Vin Pearce, a chain of events is set into motion that will end in violence and bloodshed. Glenda must keep hidden from Red her infatuation with Jimmy Vin's money and fine clothes while she and Shug dream separate dreams of making a new life away from the violence.

Woodrell writes books that are small in volume but large in scope. It is impossible to put down this story of less than 200 pages until the final tragedy unfolds. --Otto Penzler

From Publishers Weekly
Woodrell (Tomato Red) excels at depicting the seedy side of Southern living, and in this brooding coming-of-age tale he revisits the hardscrabble Ozarks town of West Table, Mo., his dark, insistently realist prose packing a visceral punch. Overweight 13-year-old Shuggie Atkins, sharp and cynical for his age, lives in a ramshackle house situated in a "bone yard" with his perpetually drunk and dreamy mother, Glenda, and his savage stepfather, Red. Despite Red's hot temper, Glenda's tendency to behave foolishly and Shuggie's frustrations, their lives settle into a rough-hewn rhythm: Red comes and goes as he pleases; Shuggie tends to the graveyard grass and helps Red steal painkillers from helpless cancer patients; and Glenda sips her "tea" cocktails and flirts with Shuggie. Then balding but classy Jimmy Vin Pearce roars into their lives in a shiny green T-bird and begins an affair with Glenda. Overcome by jealousy, Shuggie must decide should he betray his mother or grant her happiness? Woodrell displays his characters in an unforgiving light, never succumbing to the urge to romanticize them. Through unsparing prose and deft characterization, he conveys the harsh philosophy best summed up in one of Glenda's rare bits of motherly advice: "You wake up in this here world, my sweet li'l mister, you got to wake up tough. You go out that front door tough of a mornin' and stay tough 'til lights out have you learned that?" Woodrell's merciless realism is shot through with humor and rural wisdom; his work may not be to everyone's taste, but his bleak world is rendered with consummate artistry. (May 21)Forecast: Woodrell is a cult figure in England and elsewhere in Europe, where he was on the short list for the 2000 Dublin International Literary Award. Count on good reviews of this novel to raise his profile here.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Shuggie Akins, an awkward 13-year-old, lives with his mother and Red in a caretaker's house on graveyard grounds. Red's been married to Glenda since Shug was born, but it's uneasily, tacitly understood that he is not the boy's biological father. A small-time crook, the physically and verbally abusive man steals everything from televisions to shipments of silk blouses. For recreation, he forces Shug to creep into the houses of terminally ill people and rob them of their prescription drugs. At one point, Shug witnesses the funeral of a small boy, one of the victims of Red's thieving. One night, Red gambles away Glenda's stolen silk blouse and demands that she remove it in front of Shug and the winner of the bet. Glenda seems to dote on her son, but never enough, of course, to remove them from the situation. She calls him her "sweet mister"-sort of a cross between the clich‚s of a "true gentleman" and a "knight in shining armor." She's physically affectionate with him, and her behavior infuses Shug with a kind of seething, uncomfortable lust. While his relationship with Red is openly brutal, it is the relationship with his mother that is the more dangerous and fascinating. Woodrell is an absolute master at building tension in relaxed prose, and the novel has a haunting and wonderful force. Events churn to a head when Glenda meets a slick, citified man with a shiny Thunderbird, and decides to leave Red-and Shug-for the promises he offers. Sweet mister's death, for the record, is a figurative one, yet it feels more tragic than a literal one.

Chilling
By Colin Paterson
Having read and admired several of Daniel Woodrell's books, I was very pleased to see that this one had been released.
As with the previous "Tomato Red", this one is well-written and wondrous in the simple, unadorned tone of the narration. However both of these books are difficult to gush over.
These are dark gems. And they lack the allure that the common reader expects.
When we are moved to feel joy or sorrow by an author, we have no trouble considering that genius is involved. With Woodrell though, the emotions are more complex. And he can stir up things which we might prefer to have left hidden and forgotten.
This is definitely genius. Especially when someone such as Woodrell accomplishes this with a subtlety that is remarkably profound.
In this book, we are given the sad story of thirteen-year-old, overweight Shug Atkins. His is about the furthest thing from an "aw shucks" coming-of-age tale you can get.
Shug and his mother Glenda live in a shack on the grounds of the cemetery they maintain. Here they are plagued by the abusive Red. Red may or may not be Shug's biological father -- he probably isn't but this has never been made clear to Shug. Despite that, Red acts the father role and displays some of the most despicable ways possible for a grown man -- he is definitely an inappropriate role model.
Glenda has always relied on her looks even though they haven't gotten her very far. She's about little more than sex and as age advances has little in her life but maintaining an anaesthetic level of drunkenness. Far from being a perfect mother, she is still Shug's most likely ally -- a relationship that has all the possibilities for the perverse one can imagine.
Shug's world is full of dysfunction. He has been exposed to drug and alcohol abuse, hardened criminality, illicit sexual behavior and all manner of wickedness. But he doesn't know any better. And in the course of this novel, things go from bad to worse. In the end, the situation is beyond help.
Where "Tomato Red" impressed me with a story of what tragedy might happen when people fail to follow society's norms, this book shows what happens to people who live by the norms and meet tragedy by tangling with people who do not play by those rules.
I felt stunned after reading this book. Honestly. I sat and thought about it and couldn't shake it. It was like having heard a bomb go off nearby -- too close to feel secure.
This is certainly a remarkable book.

Down He Forgot As Up He Grew
By sweetmolly
Have you ever truly, physically "ached" with pity? When I closed "Death of Sweet Mister," I shut my eyes and hoped to forget Shugg Akins, but knew I never would. I just sat there dry-eyed and hollow. This is quite a testament to author Daniel Woodrell's skill, but at a price I'm not certain I wanted to pay.
Shugg aka "Morris" aka Sweet Mister is fat and thirteen, a bit of an outcast with his peers (because he's fat? poor? at the bottom of the poor white trash social scale? -- we don't know.) Shugg, our narrator is bright, quick, and a pragmatist through and through. He goes along to get along. His only champion is his mother Glenda, a pretty lady whose looks didn't get her very far, whose only weapons are persistent sensuousness and an ever-present silver thermos containing rum-laced "tea." Shugg's nominal father (probably not) is Red Akins, a cruel, brutal, truly evil man whose purpose in life is drinking, drugging and make certain Shugg and Glenda's lives were spent in abject humiliation. Red is not smart, but he is a shrewd and cunning, formidable foe. "Foe" is the wrong word for Red; you'd no more oppose him than an evil force of nature. I once read of an Australian Wandering Spider, one of the most venomous spiders in the world who is so aggressive that if you try to kill him, say with a broom, he climbs right up the broom handle and goes after you, and isn't satisfied with one bite--he keeps on biting till he's through. Red is a subhuman Wandering Spider.
Red and his pal Basil drag Shugg with them to steal drugs from terminally ill people and doctors' offices, the theory being if Shugg gets caught, as a juvenile, he will only be reprimanded. Shugg complies in his sheer terror of Red, and descriptions of this overweight, clumsy boy trying to be a second story man are both pathetic and ironically funny. What Shugg lacks in physical aptitude, he makes up for in clever quick wittedness far beyond anything Red would understand.
When Glenda has a torrid affair with a man who has a green T-Bird, the inexorable tragedy must play itself out. Everyone is in place: murderous Red, loyal Basil, and Shugg who has been taught to love his mother too much and knows he has not a song, but a scream, in his heart. Glenda's Sweet Mister is gone.
Woodrell is powerful, concise and unsparing. "Death of Sweet Mister'" is compelling, well-written, but not for everyone. With a tragedy, there are no alternate endings.

Been waiting for Wooddrell to tackle subject...

of incest. I knew he'd finally get to it and wow!- he does it with such smooth and seamless prose and just the right amount of tension that he rivals James M. Caine's renderings on such a shadowy subject. As with previous works, Woodrell proves he's a writer's writer with this dark portrait (reminds one of Faulkner's Sanctuary) of southern culture on the skids. Woodrell's style is so economical and subtle that the tension build-up throughout the novel doesn't hit until the final scenes and then it hits you right between the eyes, sharp and swift, like you're a frog being gigged by some redneck, hillbilly swilling cheap beer and looking for trouble beneath a pale moon.

The Inside Story of America's Ultimate Warriors

When Osama bin Laden was assassinated, the entire world was fascinated by the men who had completed the seemingly impossible mission that had dogged the U.S. government for over a decade. SEAL Team 6 became synonymous with heroism, duty, and justice. Only a handful of the elite men who make up the SEALs, the US Navy's best and bravest, survive the legendary and grueling selection process that leads to becoming a member of Team 6, a group so classified it technically does not even exist. There are no better warriors on Earth.

Don Mann knows what it takes to be a brother in this ultra-selective fraternity. As a member of Seal Team Six for over eight years and a SEAL for over seventeen years, he worked in countless covert operations, operating from land, sea, and air, and facing shootings, decapitations, and stabbings. He was captured by the enemy and lived to tell the tale, and he participated in highly classified missions all over the globe, including Somalia, Panama, El Salvador, Colombia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. As a coordinator for several civilian SEAL training programs, and as a former Training Officer of SEAL Team Six, he was directly responsible for shaping the bodies and minds of SEALs who carried out the assassination of Osama bin Laden.

But to become a SEAL, Mann had to overcome his own troubled childhood and push his body to its breaking point--and beyond. INSIDE SEAL TEAM 6 is a high octane narrative of physical and mental toughness, giving unprecedented insight to the inner workings of the training and secret missions of the world's most respected and feared combat unit.

Thank goodness for Chief Mann!
By Gregory A. Walker
As a retired Army Special Forces operator I've read and continue to enjoy reading books from the other Services' special operations forces. I'd read "SEAL Target Geronimo" several weeks ago and had, frankly, sworn I'd not read another SEAL authored book for some time to come given how poorly it was written and how, IMHO, misguided the former ST6 author was to have written it at all.

I discovered Don Mann's book while changing planes on a recent trip and on a hunch bought it.

Don and his co-author offer a great story and an intense read. There's something for everyone in this book and more than a few highly personal / motivational insights and "lessons learned". Don's good-natured (mostly) digs at us "Green Berets" reminded me of all the equally good-natured (mostly) shots we enjoyed and still enjoy taking at our SEAL brothers. His hard-earned and totally objective view of how we in Special Operations view the loss of our teammates in training brought back a few memories and reminders, as well.

I was surprised the author team did not simply provide the Navy's reviewers with material showing that much of what is redacted (to a distracting degree while reading the book) was and is previously available in the public and should have been left in the book. This takes a little time to research and compile but letting the reviewers get nearly everything they wanted was absurd, especially toward the ending. If not completely clean for publication I'd like to have seen Don and Mr. Pezzullo rewrite the objected to material in such a way it would have conveyed what the author wanted to convey without necessarily compromise.

It the "black bars of secrecy" were left in for some form of spooky effect they, IMHO, failed to do more than cause the chapters affected to lose their otherwise tenor, tone, and high energy pace. Please don't do this again!

Most of all this, to me, helped in a positive way to blunt the earlier book mentioned. Chief Mann was clearly a monster on the midway, a dedicated warrior and SEAL operator with a lifetime of credentials and experiences, and a man whose own story and stories about others can and will inspire people from all walks of life.

For a SEAL Don didn't do too bad with his first literary effort :) I hope there is more to come.

Confused
By Caiser
A word of warning, whole sections of this book, including chapter titles and in some cases whole pages, have been redacted. While I understand the preface at the beginning provides a reasoning, it severely hurt my ability to read, follow, and most importantly enjoy Mr. Mann's work. On top of that, obvious things, like the name "Delta" or " Nightstalkers 160th S.O.A.R." have been blacked out. These are things that seem to almost be common knowledge. While there are some entertaining personal anecdotes of Mr. Mann's youth and stories of training missions (the chapter about selection into ST-6 is mostly blacked out), don't pick up this book hoping for a nuts and bolts detailed description of DEVGRU or the SEALs.

Unreadable.
By USNGunner
Having served with and supported NSW since the early 80's, and done some ops with the subject of this book, I understand security. But the redacting in this book makes it unreadable. Entire chapters are redacted, and are useless. I would have rather they just left the subject out and made what was there coherent. Changed operators names, dates, etc to make the book readable.

Don't waste your money, it's not worth it.

Holo can't just turn away from what might be a relic of her own kind, after all. Of course, upon arrival, the travelers find that the town is the center of a giant trade dispute! New Twists
By JC
First, a clarification. The reviews dated earlier than today are not reviews of this book, but of the S&W novel volume 8.

This 8th Volume of the S&W manga continues the accelerated pace of the last book. The first third of the book finishes the story of Holo and Lawrence at Tereo, adhering closely to the plotting of the 4th novel of the series. The next, and longest section of the book, covers all of Volume 6 of the novels, our duo's trip down the Roam River from Lenos to Kerube, but with an interesting twist in the storyline. The manga author decided to essentially drop the whole complex episode in Lenos that was the heart of the 5th book of the novels. Instead the turmoil in the city is reduced to a single page explanation, with no mention whatsoever of the complex dealings Holo and Lawrence had with Eve, the female trader. H and L's motivation for the downriver journey changes from pursuing the treacherous Eve to avoiding the chaos in Lenos.

The last section of the book, about 25 pages, cover's their arrival at Kerube, along with Col, a boy they pick up along the way. There they stay at an inn, and deal with an innkeeper, and encounter a masked trader. The masked trader is then revealed to be.... Eve!

I'm in favor of most the changes the author has made in the storyline. The Tereo episode was handled very nicely. Volume 6 was certainly the least of the novels and its rapid work through I also appreciated. What I'm not so sure about is the apparent intended combination of some parts of the tales of our duo at Lenos and Kerube. I'm not sure how far the manga author tends to go with combining things, but am certainly curious to see and will give him the benefit of the doubt.

Another Helping of Spice and Wolf
By Sean
Those who are reading this review have more than likely read the previous Spice and Wolf books and know what to expect from this one. Deep economic discussion, slow character development, subtle hints of romance, and thoroughly entertaining adventure. While I've condemned the series before for being too slow in developing the characters and teasing at a romance that never gets anywhere, I'm beginning to enjoy the tease. You know that Lawrence and Holo are close and you know that soon enough there will be a push for more than just holding hands, and when that time comes it will surely be heartfelt and wonderful. And strangely enough, the only reason I read this series is to see Lawrence and Holo's romance develop. The economics and such are alright, but this is a series that truly depends on its characters to push it forward. With Col and Eve thrown into the mix, this book provides a good, albeit short, bit of entertainment that is sure to satisfy. The cliffhanger ending will leave you wanting more.

Back to the main story
By Nishi
After the side storied in the previous novel its nice to catch up with the group after the semi cliffhanger they left on in book 7. In this book the gang is heading to Kerube to find out about the alleged wolf leg bone that has been rumored. Like all the other books it has some nice art in-between the chapters and whatnot and lets the spirit of the anime continue on.

The book itself seems to be a bit smaller than the previous releases but this book is mainly the set up for the next one(Due to being part 1 of 2). While not a ton happens in the story progression department I still found it a nice read and blasted through it in one night. While the main story arch doesn't progress as much you still get some insight into the cities problems and more exposition into Lawrence's thoughts.

The character development in this book adds some new twists with Col's experiences with Kraft and Holo and how they slowly see him learn new things and start to grow as a person. It's also amusing to see his reactions to Kraft and Holos usual banter that we as readers are used to. I also liked some of the characters that they interacted with and finally tied some loose ends from previous books.

I say this is def worth picking up even if it's a smaller book than usual and is only one of two parts. I liked the random town drama that comes into play and they toss some more hints to what may lie ahead in the future for Kraft and Holo.

Positive:
• Drawings still just as good
• Finally progressing the main story
• More Col character development
• Some loose ends tied up

Negative:
• Little bit on the short side at just 181 pages

He has suffered two broken backs, two cases of high altitude pulmonary edema, and multiple other broken bones, in training or service.

Super Great Read to learn about the SEALS

Confused

Vile Bodies, by Evelyn Waugh

In the years following the First World War a new generation emerged, wistful and vulnerable beneath the glitter. The Bright Young Things of 1920s London, with their paradoxical mix of innocence and sophistication, exercised their inventive minds and vile bodies in every kind of capricious escapade. In these pages a vivid assortment of characters, among them the struggling writer Adam Fenwick-Symes and the glamorous, aristocratic Nina Blount, hunt fast and furiously for ever greater sensations and the hedonistic fulfillment of their desires. Evelyn Waugh's acidly funny satire reveals the darkness and vulnerability beneath the sparkling surface of the high life.

Typically amusing Waugh
By Westley
I read my first book by Waugh a few months ago and have become a huge fan, "Vile Bodies" being the fourth Waugh book I've read. Although not a sequel to his first novel, "Decline and Fall," "Vile Bodies" includes several of the same characters and has a similar satiric tone. You do not, however, have to have read "Decline and Fall" to enjoy this book.
The main plot concerns a group of young people from London's "bright young generation." They have monied parents and spend most of their time searching for the next party and amusing fad. The protagonist is Adam Fenwick-Symes, a poor writer who manages to live the highlife by being a hanger-on. He is in love with Nina Blount, but cannot marry her because of his economic status. The book chronicles his attempts at making enough money to marry Nina. As with other Waugh books, the characters are passive and do not really do anything, but they manage to have some terrible things happen to them!
The supporting characters are extremely funny, including the modern Agatha Runcible, the revolving line of Prime Ministers, and the various people who become the columnist Mr. Chatterbox. Of course, as with all of the Back Bay Books editions of Waugh's books, the cover and style are lovely. If you love Waugh, you'll love this book. Highly recommended.

Vile Bodies as 1930s remake of Through the looking glass
By A Customer
What seems to be most missed by readers of Vile Bodies is the supposedly cold ironic author's sympathy for the Bright Young Things he's writing about. So they're empty, loveless, superficial, but they are also the animating force of the novel (1930 was a turgid time of Depression), inventive, amusing, some are even likeable. The love scene between Adam and Nina is very moving behind the brutally ironic mode of its narration - we sense two very scared naive human beings who live by appearances struggling as the reality of the situation hits them. The young people act as they do because their society has no moral centre they can cling to. Parents are mentally unstable and reckless, judges allow young girls to die stupidly in their company, prime ministers are lecherous old codgers, aristocratic grands dames are white slave traders, and religion is either a stepping stone for power (Rothschild) or a vulgarised money-grubbing circus (Miss Ape). By contrast, the Things' aimless frivolity is something of an understandable rebellion in the face of this example from their elders. So ineffectual is the Establishment that the two characters who do wish to settle down in the conservative state of marriage, however sincere or otherwise, are constantly hindered. Ironically, the form of the book is fragmentary, mirroring the society it portrays, but it is the exploits of the Things that bring it together, give it a unifying force. The book is epigraphed by two quotes from Through the looking glass: like Alice, ordered hierarchical society looks at itself, and sees a mad whirling spinning top going madly out of control. Like Thomas Pynchon's Maxwell Demon, the more energy it expends the quicker it reaches inertia. The war at the end isn't literal (we are never given any wider political dimensions). Adam is flung off the merry-go-round into a bleak, dismal hell of his own making, a life without any meaningful ties to shore up against the ruins. A very moving, terrifying, sad, comic masterpiece from the century's funniest writer.

Idiots and savants
By A.J.
The great thing about Evelyn Waugh is that the humor of his novels transcends their era. You don't have to know anything about English society of the 1920s to be entertained by "Vile Bodies" because Waugh's style relies on fundamentally silly characters, wry dialogue, piercing intelligence, and manic energy more than on contemporary culture, events, and figures. What makes his humor unique is that he can be irreverent without being tasteless, which seems an amazing concept since modern comedy has made the terms "irreverent" and "tasteless" practically synonymous. Few novels can elicit from me at least one paroxysm of audible laughter, but "Vile Bodies" succeeds in this feat, as does most of Waugh's work.
"Vile Bodies," one his earlier novels, is prototypical of his career, featuring a protagonist who is beleaguered by misfortunes but manages to rise to certain challenges. Adam Fenwyck-Symes is a young author who would like to marry his girlfriend Nina Blount but doesn't have enough money to support her, and he has to write twelve books before he can get a decent advance from his publisher. For the time being, he rents a room at a boarding house run by a woman named Lottie Crump and inhabited by a disparate group of idiots including the deposed king of Ruritania.
Adam petitions Nina's father, a retired colonel who is either senile or eccentric or both, a wealthy man who's too cheap to buy a car or pay for bus fare but enthusiastic enough about the cinema to blow all his money on the production of a film about Methodism founder John Wesley, for some financial aid, but the old man's strings can't be pulled so easily. A ray of hope is offered in the form of the suicide of a local rag gossip columnist named Simon Balcairn who assumes the nom de plume of Mr. Chatterbox. Adam fills in for the deceased hack, documenting the antics of the partying crowd, nonchalantly embellishing and inventing items to make the proceedings more interesting to his readers and himself.
Waugh is brilliant in the way he constructs an episodic novel within the context of an overarching plot, each of his characters usually having one distinct idiosyncrasy that contributes something significant to the story. One episode consists of a drunken Major who bets Adam's money on a sure horse but never makes it clear whether Adam will ever get his money back. Another memorable scene is an automobile race attended by Adam and a few of his friends, including Agatha Runcible, a young lady who nearly immolates herself by carelessness with her discarded cigarettes. And perhaps the most salient extraneous character is Mrs. Melrose Ape, an American evangelist who travels with a chorus of winged "angels," each named after a Virtue. (Chastity's persistent misconduct with strange men is troublesome to the troupe.) Virtue or not, Discontent could never be as Divine as one of Waugh's novels.

I got this book for my 12 year old son. It's hard to get kids to read, so I listen to his reactions when he learns of new books. He read the whole book in 2 days, and can't wait for anything new by James Patterson!! I will buy them all, they keep my son reading.

I give it a five.star because it teaches you a life lesson in this story about how some people are just mean and call you names . and if you have a friend to stand up for you they will make a deal or talk it out with the other people ..so what I'm saying here is bullies can only hurt one of you so if you see a friend in need be there for them.

sticky situations
By A Customer
In the book Middle School How I Survived Bullies by James Patterson, a kid named Rafe Khatchadorian gets stuck in some sticky situations at a summer camp he is going to be at for the whole summer. Along the way Rafe meets some new friends who he happens to be in the same cabin with... and some enemies in summer camp. Rafes bunk mate is probably not his first pick... Booger Eater, (that is what his nickname is.) Rafe end ups realizing that booger Eater could be a person that you will want to be with this whole summer camp. This book is not just for kids going into middle school; it can be for kids coming out of middle school or kids in elementary school. When I read the book I really felt like I was in the action, someone in Rafe's cabin. Middle school is another great hit by James Patterson. My review for Middle School How I Survived Bullies is 8 out of 10.

The 80/20 Manager: The Secret to Working Less and Achieving More, by Richard Koch

Bestselling author Richard Koch shows managers how to apply the 80/20 Principle to achieve exceptional results at work--without stress or long hours.

In his bestselling book The 80/20 Principle, Richard Koch showed readers how to put the 80/20 Principle--the idea that 80 percent of results come from just 20 percent of effort--into practice in their personal lives. Now in THE 80/20 MANAGER, he demonstrates how to apply the principle to management. An 80/20 manager learns to focus only on the issues that really matter, achieving exceptional results, and feeling successful everyday while working less hard in fewer hours.

A large number of managers--especially in these difficult times--feel completely overwhelmed. Their inboxes are overflowing and they constantly struggle to finish their to-do lists, leaving little time for the things that really matter. THE 80/20 MANAGER shows a new way to look at management--and at life--to enjoy work and build a successful and fulfilling career.

From Booklist
In the new work environment in which managers have more work and less resources, The 80/20 Manager convincingly guides leaders on how to get the desired results from their teams without excessive effort. Managers who feel overwhelmed by their workloads may want to try some of the techniques presented in the book, such as selecting and completing one priority daily before giving in to email and other distractions. The book is built on the premise of the 80/20 rule and how to apply it to reduce the clutter and achieve more focused and productive results. As Apple’s iPod capitalized on the “20 percent of features that 80 percent of users actually use,” managers can employ similar techniques. Building on his The 80/20 Principle (1997), Koch presents 10 ways to be an 80/20 manager, including how to be a superconnecting manager, a liberating manager, a time-rich manager, or a simplifying manager like Alan Mulally of Ford. These simple, practical techniques can be tried individually or together, although some may not work for everyone. Good advice of widespread appeal. --Cindy Kryszak

"Richard Koch sees so clearly that good management and leadership come from within, and that liberating talent in yourself and in others is the key to success. This is a must-read book for anyone who wants to be a great leader and achieve extraordinary results."―Rt Hon Lord Smith of Finsbury, Chairman, Environment Agency

"Koch provides a step-by-step guide to greater efficiency, helping readers with topics including mentoring, leveraging influence, finding meaning and direction, developing strategy, and consistently pursuing the biggest goals with the smallest effort....This easy-to-follow, substantive work helps readers develop a managerial style that's truly worthwhile."
---Publishers Weekly

"A notch above most management tomes.... Here is a book that you've been waiting for: A serious management text that encourages you to cultivate laziness. No, not a true do-nothing indolence, but an intelligent, strategic laziness. A laziness that gives you ample time to think creatively and act decisively on the matters that are really important." -- Charles Crumpley, Los Angeles Business Journal

How high is up? How big can you think?
By Perry Marshall
80/20 says some books are not even worth skimming, and others are worth reading and re-reading. It also suggests that if any author changes your life, you should devour everything he puts out. Not 80% of it, but 100%.

If I'm not Richard Koch's #1 fan, I'm a contender for the spot. His book "The 80/20 Principle" set my mind on fire ten years ago. Most profound business book I've ever read. Today I know Richard because he graciously wrote the foreword for my own book "80/20 Sales & Marketing."

Richard's books have on occasion been criticized for being repetitive. While there might be a grain of truth to that, if you thoroughly digest what he is saying, he is not repetitive at all. Such is the case with this book. Some books only merit speed reading; others demand serious thought. This is one of those books. 80/20 in and of itself is deep enough that any tool that forces you to think hard about it is good use of your time.

Richard was kind enough to send me an advance manuscript. I printed out, marked, read and re-read Ways 7, 8, 9 and 10. Richard is my senior and certainly has a more impressive financial resume. A close reading shows why. Provocative, contrarian piece of advice: "Don't make to-do lists. Instead figure out the ONE thing you could do today that would earn you the rest of the day off."

To the person immersed in the demanding minutia of NOW, that sounds like an absurd, even insulting suggestion. For the person who thinks BIG, who truly 'gets' 80/20, it forces you to ask yourself uncomfortable, make-you-squirm, quantum-leap questions. In this case you are likely to ask, "What breakthrough would render my entire existing business obsolete, because the new model is so unabashedly superior?"

These are not easy questions. They demand thought. Thought requires space. Space requires sweeping activities off the table that are not in your top 5%. Space requires submitting the urgency of now to the wisdom of strategy and seasoned counsel from others.

Engineering big breakthroughs is how you should spend your day. The urgency of "NOW" is the #1 enemy of all such breakthroughs.

The title of this book is "The 80/20 Manager" but that's misleading. To me this is not about management per se, although it's a terrific book for managers to read. I would have called it "The 80/20 Career." This is really about orchestrating time, opportunities and projects so you become a Bill Bain or a Bruce Henderson (founders of Bain and Boston Consulting Group, respectively, kings of their own little empires) rather than merely being the very smart, overworked person who is employed by such people. It's about cultivating the thinking that makes you a legitimate superstar.

The title unnecessarily narrows the audience......the insights apply to a lot more than managers
By Carl B. Nelson
I liked the first book on this principle (The 80/20 Principle). I skipped over some of the sections applying to business. I was looking for insights that would help me deal with an increasingly overwhelming life.

If I didn't read a review that said the insights in this book are much broader than the title suggests I would have skipped it and missed out on a lot of valuable, psychologically liberating insights. Clearly managers and business owners will get the most from it. But there are a surprising number of insights I've gotten so far and I don't own a business. And I'm not even a quarter of the way through it.

As business writer, philosopher and teacher Earl Nightingale said in Lead the Field, even if we don't run or own a company we can all look at ourselves as corporations with various departments such as sales, and research and development. We all "manage" at least a one person company and have one major customer (i.e. the employer).

I'm not a business owner like Perry Marshall (a reviewer of this title and contender for Richard Koch's number one fan). But I also got a lot of value out of chapters 7, 8, 9, and 10.

The 80/20 Principle is a different and highly liberating way of looking at life and, in this case, work and career.

I worked myself into the ground at my past jobs. My reward at one job was total burnout and in my last job was to have my position eliminated as I fought to keep my wife alive with stage 4 breast cancer. Simply working harder and harder harder isn't the answer. If you're working harder and getting nowhere you'll find the answers you're looking for in the pages of this book (and The 80/20 Principle). Don't just read it, study it, review it often until it's an automatic part of your thought and action.

Are You a Manager or Business Owner? If You Don't Read This Book, You're An Idiot!
By Vickie Helm
I am a non-fiction book junkie...I am also a serial entrepreneur. I read about 3 to 5 books a month on business development and have for more than two decades. I read a lot and don't do a lot of reviews of books. But I felt as if this book was so important for today's business owner and managers of any business, that I am writing a review to tell you that you MUST read this book if you want to become the best manager you can as an owner or corporate manager.

This book is simply one of the best management books out today. It is important to understand that traditional management tools are dying and learning what is really working in its place is hard to find. Richard Koch's 80/20 science is the single most important management tool that will grow your career and business. More importantly, it will cut your work load and stress level in half. If you want to have a life while having a business...this is a must read! It is the future business acumen that matters in a global business world.

I don't know this man.... I haven't been paid to write a review... I am just a business owner looking for solid, exceptional business advice that will help me navigate this tumultuous business environment and give me stronger skill sets....this book delivers that... can't stress this enough.
