Gr 9 Up—Readers who have an extraordinary ability to suspend disbelief will be the primary audience for this sequel to Green's Truth or Dare (Little, Brown, 2013). The novel picks right back up with main characters Emerson (a model who had an affair with the father of a classmate), Sydney (a talented photographer who is also an arsonist), and Tenley (a mean girl beauty who is afraid that her breast implants will become public knowledge) as they receive letters and texts threatening to divulge their secrets to the world at large: "Time for a new game, girls: Show and Tell. The only rule? Don't tell. Or I'll show your secrets to the world." Terrified of exposure, the teens are desperate to figure out who killed the five "Lost Girls" in their hometown of trendy Echo Bay, MA, and to avoid becoming the next victims. Red herrings abound as the clueless protagonists face attacks, such as glass bottles being thrown at their heads, being pushed underwater in a hot tub, locked into a club vault, and finding a murdered pet. A confusion of characters, unrealistic and overly dramatic plot, a completely unresolved ending, and choppy writing may further limit the potential audience. Casual drinking, sex, and some drug use make this book suitable for older readers. Suggest the YA classic Lois Duncan's I Know What You Did Last Summer (Little, Brown, 1973) as a better choice.—Susan Riley, Mamaroneck Public Library, NY
Review
"The thrills keep pages turning...an intriguing sequel with more promised for the future."―Kirkus Reviews
Praise for Secrets and Lies: "So many unanswered questions, so much tingly suspense, so much dark drama: by the end of this book, some readers will think they have the identity of the darer figured out based on who is being targeted and how, but that herring may turn out to be red after all; in any case, anticipation for the finale will be high." ―The Bulletin
Praise for Truth or Dare:"Green offers an edge-of-your-seat thriller. The characters are all well drawn and believably flawed...Creepy and dark to the core, this is a great offering for fans of Lois Duncan and Christopher Pike."―School Library Journal
"A well-plotted suspense tale....Good intrigue designed for the chick-lit crowd."―Kirkus Reviews

... Jacqueline Green is definitely a book that I would recommend. Referring back to the review written by Kris/Alice

The book Secrets and Lies by Jacqueline Green is definitely a book that I would recommend. Referring back to the review written by Kris/Alice, I disagree with the ending of your review, stating that the characters did not grow throughout the book and that readers will have a hard time connecting to them because of their unlikely personalities. I thought this book was a lot better than the first book in the series(which I would recommend reading before reading this book, in order to understand the backstory better). The plot was much more exciting, the characters improved, and more about the story was revealed. I really enjoyed this one.
This book had a much more exciting plot than the first book. I feel like the first book in this series was filled with the backstory of characters, and the characters weren’t as grown up as they are in this book. During this story, three unlikely friends bond together after the death of a friend they all had in common; Caitlin. An unknown darer has been daring them anonymously for quite some time now. For me, the most exciting plot developments in this book was either how all of the girls worked together throughout the book, despite their pasts involving each other, or the unexpected twist at the end of the book, but I won’t spoil that for you. Tenley, one of the main characters, really wasn’t fond of Sydney or Emerson, the other main characters in the story, until this book, since they had to work together to figure out who was responsible for their friend Caitlin’s death, as well as who it was sending them the life-threatening dares. In chapter two, Tenley even says, “She deleted it before Sydney or Emerson could see. She didn’t need Sydney-or anyone-- seeing her with Guinness like that”(19). Tenley wanted to keep her life private from Sydney and Emerson, and disliked them to a great extent. However, by the end of the book they all have developed a tolerance for one another, something that was not expected. “‘No,’ Tenley whispered. She looked from Sydney to Emerson. She could tell they were thinking the same thing she was”(303). They all end up becoming vaguely similar, which I assume will help them in the final book in this trilogy.
The characters develop much better in this book and are a lot easier to relate some part to. In the first book, I didn’t like Emerson at all. However, that was before Green had included Emerson’s point of view in the book. Before adding this in, I thought Emerson didn’t care about anybody, and only cared about how she looked and who she hung out with. After reading this book, which included Emerson’s point of view, Emerson became my favorite, as well as helped to contribute to the characters developing much better in this book. In the first book, I thought the characters were either too boring, too immature, or too unrealistic. For example, I thought Emerson was basically emotionless as that is how she was portrayed without seeing her point of view in the first book. “No. Her skin went clammy as she jabbed open the message”(133). By seeing this quote, I realized that Emerson hates going through this just as much, if not more, than the other characters mentioned throughout the story. Green definitely made the story more interesting by adding Emerson’s point of view.
In this book, more is revealed than in the first book. I think the first book was just made to serve as a “housekeeping” book almost, just to get all of the excessive information out of the way, then pick up the exciting parts of the story more towards the end of it. By saying more is revealed, the most interesting thing that was revealed was learning that Guinness, a boy friends with all three of the girls, was friends with one of the girls that has been killed in the past. By learning this, a lot of suspicion kicked up about whether or not Guinness was the one sending the girls the life threatening dares. “‘So the night Kyla died… you don’t know anything about that?’ Guinness fell silent”(86). Obviously, by this quote people would assume that Guinness had something to do with the death that night. However, I’ll leave it up to you to read the book in order to determine if he should be ruled out as a suspect or not. This isn’t the only exciting development, but it was one of my favorites.
My favorite quote in this book was “Guinness was always such a closed book, but his photos were the window to what was written on those pages”(74). This quote is from Sydney’s point of view. This was my favorite quote because it says a lot about Guinness’ personality. It shows that although he isn’t one to share much about his personal life, his pictures are his way of being outgoing and unique. I also think this quote was written very nicely. The metaphor used here really draws the reader in, and it definitely drew me in.

Straightforward thriller
By Kris
Secrets and Lies picks up right where Truth or Dare ended. Tenley, Sydney, and Emerson have been brought together by secrets and by the murder of their mutual friend. It's pretty apparent from events that the darer / murderer from book one must have an accomplice. This accomplice now continues to send anonymous, threatening messages and even make actual attempts on Tenley’s life. When the girls try to find out the identity of the murderer, they start receiving messages threatening to reveal their deep, dark secrets to the world.
Once again, the plot revolves around the darer with the girls trying to solve the mystery. Suspense is built with the accomplice seeming to know their every move and even their most private conversation and increases with the girls' decision to confront the murder face to face. The mystery is interesting but, at the same time, seems a bit unrealistic and overly dramatic. These girls are teens with so many secrets that they're desperate to conceal, so desperate that they continue the lies. Furthermore, even with their lives at stake, they don't turn to their parents or police and try to resolve things themselves.
I didn't feel connected to the characters. They only care about designer clothes and fashions, and they go around flirting with guys. There's nothing substantial to their characters. It didn't feel like they grew up over the course of the book, and there isn't really anything for us to learn from them; if anything, it's to not be like them. Though I don't think that is too big a problem since I can't envision many high schoolers being like them.
Overall, Secrets and Lies is a straightforward thriller with a well-plotted suspense and a lot of red herrings mixed in with the clues. You just need to remember not to take it too seriously. Be prepared to suspend disbelief, and this book is a quick, entertaining read.
Note: the casual drinking, sex, and drug use make this book unsuitable for young teens readers.
