Where'd You Go, Bernadette: A Novel, by Maria Semple

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle--and people in general--has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.

To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence--creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter's role in an absurd world.

Review
"Comedy heaven.... This divinely funny, many-faceted novel...leaves convention behind. Instead, it plays to Ms. Semple's strengths as someone who can practice ventriloquism in many voices, skip over the mundane and utterly refute the notion that mixed-media fiction is bloggy, slack or lazy.... The tightly constructed WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is written in many formats-e-mails, letters, F.B.I. documents, correspondence with a psychiatrist and even an emergency-room bill for a run-in between Bernadette and Audrey. Yet these pieces are strung together so wittily that Ms. Semple's storytelling is always front and center, in sharp focus. You could stop and pay attention to how apt each new format is, how rarely she repeats herself and how imaginatively she unveils every bit of information. But you would have to stop laughing first."―Janet Maslin, The New York Times

You don't have to know Seattle to get Maria Semple's broadly satirical novel.... Underlying the nontraditional narrative are insights into the cost of thwarted creativity and the power of mother-daughter bonds, although a reader may be having too much fun to notice."―O, The Oprah Magazine

"Delightfully droll.... Semple...cuts a wry slice of a life-one that's populated by private school helicopter parents, obsessively eco-conscious neighbors, and green-juice swilling, TED-talking husbands-and one that's sharp enough to make us feel slightly relieved about not having to live anywhere quite so bucolic."―Megan O'Grady, Vogue

"The characters in Where'd You Go, Bernadette may be in real emotional pain, but Semple has the wit and perspective and imagination to make their story hilarious. I tore through this book with heedless pleasure."
―Jonathan Franzen, author of Freedom

"There's a lot to like in Semple's charming novel, including the vivacious humor and the lesson that when creative forces like Bernadette stop creating, they become 'a menace to society.' Even more appealing is the mutually adoring mother-daughter relationship at its warm heart."―Heller McAlpin, NPR

"In her second novel...Semple pieces together a modern-day comic caper full of heart and ingenuity....a compelling composite of a woman's life-and the way she's viewed by the many people who share it. As expected from a writer who has written episodes of Arrested Development, the nuances of mundane interactions are brilliantly captured, and the overarching mystery deepens with each page, until the thoroughly satisfying dénouement."―Publisher's Weekly (Starred Review)

"A comedic delight..."―Family Circle

"Agoraphobia and Antarctica are among the elements in Maria Semple's terrific novel."―Parade

"Semple's affecting characters, not-necessarily-nice humor and surprising plot twists make this novel an enchanting ride."―Carolyn Kellogg, Los Angeles Times

"Warm, dark, sad, funny-and a little bit screwball.... This is an inventive and very funny novel that gets bonus points for transcending form."―Susan Coll, The Washington Post

"[A] cracklingly smart family dramedy.... [I was] stunned and transported by this extraordinarily powerful and intelligent novel."―Lev Grossman, Time

"Brilliant, hilarious, endlessly inventive, and compulsively readable, WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE grabs you by the collar and never lets go. Semple is not only a masterful juggler, and an astute social critic, she is a magician!"―Jonathan Evison, author of West of Here

"A funny, quirky and wildly entertaining read."―Ladies' Home Journal

"WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is a pure pleasure.... Semple's light touch and glittering prose keep things aloft."―Kate Tuttle, The Boston Globe

"Full of endearing moments and sublime satire, WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is 'divinely funny' literature."―The Week

"It was only a matter of time before Maria Semple turned her hilariously wicked, razor-sharp, acid-etched humor loose on Seattle, and set her impeccable laser sights on the heart of Microsoft. At times a tears-to-your-eyes laugher that skewers my own home town (and quite possibly my own mother), WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is also a compassionate look at family dysfunction, the paralysis of genius, and good old-fashioned parental love. Cleverly constructed and brilliantly executed, Semple has driven this one home with great authority, and has proven, once again, that she ranks among contemporary literature's finest satirists."―Garth Stein, author of The Art of Racing in the Rain

"Find your patron saint of fed-up-ed-ness in our fave summer read, WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE.... You'll laugh your pants off, and love the takeaway-that a life gone off the rails can propel you in a bright new direction."―Redbook

"If you read only one book this summer about an agoraphobic mother and her broken promise to take her daughter Bee on a trip to Antarctica, make it this one.... Semple writes like an oversized plume, finding all your tickle spots with ease."―Holley Simmons, Washington Post Express

"A smart, caperish, very contemporary novel about marriage, mores and family life by an observer who knows the cultural landscape."―Jeffrey Ann Goudie, The Kansas City Star

"Achingly funny and perfectly timed....Semple has a big heart, and possess that rare ability to skewer, dissect and empathize with her targets, all at the same time....Read BERNADETTE, laugh loud and long, then take a good look in the mirror."―Mary Ann Gwinn, Seattle Times

"A delightfully funny book, that constantly catches one by surprise, WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE combines a shrewdly observed portrait of Seattle-life with, of all things, a mysterious disappearance in Antarctica. A pleasure."―Matthew Kneale, author of When We Were Romans

"If you're not taking a vacation this summer, a dive into Semple's comedic melting pot of family dysfunction, hyperactive parenting, and mental unraveling offers a hilarious escape. You'll find yourself rooting for the runaway parent in a narrative that is dark, funny, and completely human."―Tanya Jensen, Los Angeles Confidential

"Sharp and funny, a literary page turner..."―Susannah Cahalan, New York Post

"Semple...has the feel for family strife of a born literary novelist, but she retains the comedic sensibility of a screen writer; which is to say that the book is actually laugh-out-loud funny, rather than "humorous." And don't let the hilarity of the first third of the book fool you into thinking that this is a light farce; by the last page, Semple, in addition to skewering helicopter-parents with satire so deft that it could pass for truth, touches on religion, class, and what we owe to those we love."―Nicholas Mancusi, The Daily Beast

"An uproarious comedy of manners."―Mark Haddon, People

"This brilliant satire (think Portlandia, set in Seattle) is inventive and wickedly funny."―Whole Living

"With a sure feel for the screwball and the slapstick, Maria Semple deliciously sends up the privileged, overachieving, PC world of Emerald City. WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is a crazy quilt of an epistolary novel, utterly contemporary yet pleasingly old-fashioned, and always light and witty."―Stewart O'Nan, author of The Odds

"Semple's snappy writing and spot-on humor make this one of the funniest beach reads of the summer."―Meganne Fabrega, Minneapolis Star Tribune

"[A] high-energy, often hilarious epistolary novel."―Brangien Davis, Seattle Magazine

"A smart, intelligent, nuanced tale whose characters will stick with you long after you finish the last page."―Karen M. Thomas, The Dallas Morning News

"Jonathan Franzen endorsed it...and we weren't aware that he liked anything, so we felt inclined to pick it up. We now see why he enjoyed it so much."―Zoë Triska, Huffington Post

"Semple is the novelist of the moment-a Ben Fountain for the latte set....outrageously funny and deceptively deep, [BERNADETTE] is a rewarding read."―Tucker Shaw, The Denver Post

"With its big heart set on acceptance, BERNADETTE feels something like coming home."―Paul Constant, The Stranger

"A shrewd yet compassionate portrait of family dysfunction and the volatility of genius in laugh-out-loud, irresistibly high-spirited prose.... WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE takes readers on an original and movingly imaginative adventure."―Catherine Straut, Elle

"Semple's ear for satirizing this world is sharp and scathingly funny; she could probably turn her novel into a stand-up act."―Stewart Oksenhorn, The Aspen Times

"Semple, once a writer for Arrested Development, picks apart the mundane interactions of everyday life with a hilarious hand, and you're sure to be as swept up in this witty, inventive mystery as we were."―Emily Temple, Flavorpill

"WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is fresh and funny and accomplished, but the best thing about it was that I never had any idea what was going to happen next. It was a wild ride..."―Kate Atkinson, author of Case Histories and Started Early, Took My Dog

"Maria Semple dissects the gory complexities of familial dysfunction with a deft and tender hand. WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is a triumph of social observation and black comedy by a skillful chronicler of moneyed malaise."―Patrick deWitt, author of The Sisters Brothers

"[An] engrossing and whip-smart modern epistolary novel..."―Stephan Lee, Entertainment Weekly

"Semple paints each character with depth and tenderness while keeping the tone upbeat; no easy feat for a novel about a mother who pulls a disappearing act."―Korina Lopez, USA Today

"[A] romp of a novel.... Semple...nail[s] Seattle's idiosyncrasies in wickedly funny send-ups."―Barbara Lloyd McMichael, The Bellingham Herald

"Utterly delightful....Semple used to write for the revered cult hit Arrested Development, and she brings plenty of squirming comedy to the novel, which manages to be that rare good read that actually makes you feel good at the end. Her send-up of Seattle is hilarious, with its Victims Against Victimhood support groups, moms offering organic gardeners swiss chard in lieu of payment, and teachers who are so PC that fourth graders are expected to seriously debate the pros and cons of the Chinese occupation of Tibet. But the heart of the book belongs to Bee, who, as an admissions counselor puts it, tests off the charts for grit and poise; and her mother, who, for all her neuroses, did a bang-up job of turning out one terrific kid."―Yvonne Zipp, Christian Science Monitor

"A quirky novel, laugh-out-loud funny in parts, filled with erudite cultural commentary, and teeming with life's predictable messiness, as well as its limitless potential for unexpected joy."―Kathryn Justice Leache, The Commercial Appeal

"A touching and hilarious portrait of the anxiety producing, high powered Seattle lifestyle of a somewhat eccentric family of three (and their dog Ice Cream).... This is a great read, well written and populated by characters you care about deeply."―Ruth Freeman, The Norwalk Citizen

"Stands to become a cult favorite.... Like Jane Austen-who set the gold standard for social satire-Semple's most ridiculous characters are convinced that they're the normal ones, and it's wonderful fun to watch as they behave abominably, believing themselves blameless.... Semple has a keen ear for the nuances of different voices, and it's a joy to get to know these people.... Bernadette is...marvelous. Her rants read like the best comedy routines.... It's the rare book that actually deserves the term "laugh-out-loud funny," but I found myself reading passages from almost every page to anyone who would listen, even as I could barely articulate the words through my own laughter."―Malena Watrous, San Francisco Chronicle

"Intertwined with the funny stuff is the heartfelt story of a personal crisis of a creative talent who's slipped off the rails... Bernadette's journey is fresh, funny, and thought provoking."―Anne Payne, The Florida Times-Union

"Comic lines and...fast-paced events."―Nan Willard Cappo, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

"I don't even know where to begin with how fantastic it is.... I ate up the Microsoft-obsessed setting and the fabulous, mad-but-not-really Bernadette. Go, get it, thank me later."―Megan Angelo, Glamour.com

"If wacky, anxiety-prone geniuses are some of your favorite people, then pick up Maria Semple's WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE to add Bernadette Fox and her family to your list of hilarious companions. Bernadette and company don't mind cursing, so if you do, please be warned. But if not, then you've got a stamped passport to Semple's expertly crafted and rollicking, laugh-till-you-cry adventure that will have you tearing through the pages to find out if Bernadette is gone for good."―Dawn Andrus Paine, Daily Herald (Utah)

"Well-plotted and masterfully satirical.... WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE is really, really funny, and not in the usual way that suggests the author is trying to be funny to cover up their deficiencies in plot or styling. As it turns out, Maria Semple is both a good writer and a funny writer, but she prefers to be the latter."―Janet Potter, The Millions

"Sublime..."―Frank Bruni, on his blog for The New York Times

"With only her second book, TV writer-turned novelist Maria Semple has won rave reviews with a withering, but ultimately affectionate satire of Seattle's privileged set."―Chris Michaud, Reuters

"If Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl represented the dark heart of the summer literature, Maria Semple's...BERNADETTE embodies the sunnier, funnier side.... Semple has a flair for satire and screwball jinks, and she has produced a great gift to avid readers: a book that you never want to finish reading."―Connie Ogle, The Miami Herald

"An epistolary novel for the twenty-first century.... Paced like a beach read, BERNADETTE has a scathing wit and a casual storytelling style that pulls the reader in and forces her to listen."―Capital Times' blog

"One of the funniest stories you can read this year."―Donna Liquori, The Albany Times Union

"A powerful mosaic of mental illness, artistic temperament, and family melodrama.... Semple's background in television and comedy... provide[s] the foundation for this subversively funny novel and its all-too-rare blend of humor and heart.... In a time when everything is a version of something else, how extraordinary-and exciting-to read a novel that subverts conventions to create an experience that feels so fresh."―Jeremy Medina, The L Magazine

"This book is hysterical, kind of wacky, and utterly original."―Entertainment Weekly's "The Bullseye"

"One of the big burst-of-oxygen books this year.... clever and inventive but also genuine and heartfelt."―Gillian Flynn for The New York Times' "Inside the List"

"Semple's epistolary novel satirizes Seattle, Microsoft, helicopter parents, the elite, and the overeducated-while revealing truths about family, genius, ambition, and resilience."―Gillian Flynn, GQ

[A] clever story of family dysfunction."―Dailycandy

"Marketed as a beach read, give this to your soccer moms who have come to the realization that maybe they aren't 'all that.' With a Tiffany-blue cover, it's wrapped perfectly!"―Michelle Will, The Kitsap Sun

"A quirky comic masterpiece...about an irresistibly precocious teen and her awesomely agoraphobic mom.... BERNADETTE is an ingenious, enjoyable, continually surprising farce."―David Hiltbrand, The Philadelphia Inquirer

"In appearance, this may be the perfect beach read to go with your retro bikini. Inside the cover, Semple's novel is funny, suspenseful, multi-faceted, multi-media, and sad, too - spot-on social commentary..."―Jen Doll, The Atlantic Wire

Fun and entertaining summer read!
By drey
Bernadette Fox is a wife and mother with anxiety issues. HUGE anxiety issues. It's so bad that she hires an offshore resource to handle her day-to-day errands - the ones she doesn't have to show up for in person. The less she has to deal with people, the better!

She wasn't always like this. In fact, she used to be a rising star in the world of architecture, back in the day. A genius rising star. Then something happened, and Bernadette ran from the world.

Her husband Elgin still loves her, and her daughter Bee thinks the world revolves around her, so Bernadette doesn't have any complaints. Until things spin out of control, and Elgin decides an intervention is necessary before it all goes to hell in a hand-basket. After all, it can't be good if the FBI comes a-knocking...

Then Bernadette disappears.

Where did she go? I'd tell you, but that would mean you'd miss the fun and enjoyment of reading Where'd You Go, Bernadette? for yourself. It manages to present Bernadette's anxiety issues in a compassionate and heart-warming manner. You'll love Bee, and you'll love Bernadette. Elgin proves that genius doesn't preclude human errors, and the novel ends with lessons learnt even for Bernadette. Definitely add this to your summer reading - before summer's gone.

I want to know where Bernadette went
By Cindy Bokma
If you didn't read Maria Semple's first book, This One Is Mine: A Novel you must do so. The author has the kind of writing where she slyly inserts little witty comments here and there and if you just skim the book, you'll miss those gems.

Where'd You Go, Bernadette is an unusual and crafty novel in that it doesn't read completely like a regular book. Put together with bits and pieces from flashbacks, emails and other documents, the book has the reader turning pages to finally figure out where did Bernadette actually go?

What mother can't identify with Bernadette's desire to flee? She was once a promising architect but is now someone who doesn't want to venture outside her house. She is irritated by her neighbors, mothers at her daughter's school, slow drivers, Canadians, to name a few things. In her near-refusal to leave the house, she farms her duties out to a virtual assistant in India and you might take a guess how that pans out.

When Bernadette disappears, her 15 year old daughter is convinced Bernadette just wouldn't go without a good reason. She's the one who pieces everything together but not before the reader is taken on a journey to learn what exactly drove Bernadette to leave.

I was hooked from beginning to end! This novel is fun and entertaining and I was sad to turn the last page.

Entertaining and easy read but repetitive and sells out at the end
By YumYum
(Warning- spoilers) I raced through this book. Bernadette is a very entertaining character- she shares the same opinion of Seattle that most people have when they move here. Many people leave for the reasons Bernadette lists. But I grew to love Bernadette's grit- even if it was a little obsessive and thorny. But then the book takes huge shift- HUGE-changes the character of the mom (she does something to her daughter that is just not conceivable because she is welded to her child and is her child's refuge- so she just wouldn't do it). Maybe the author didn't know where to go from there so she had the mom "go". (the title sort of gives that away in some sort of dual meaning- as in "go away" and/or "loss of self", etc.). But once this happens, the book becomes sort of unbelievable and tedious. And on the last two pages, all of a sudden, Bernadette has a complete reversal of what she previously thought- which was a huge let down for me. There is no resolution for some of the problems that crop up-some HUGE problems- so why have them at all? I guess the author took a class in symbolism, and you don't have to guess what the house, the boat, the ice, the blackberries, etc, all seem to represent. It's in your face for sure. Even though she has some msft details wrong- admins ARE secretaries not VP's and if someone dallies with them, they would be FIRED- and other things that make no sense- I guess the average reader who is NOT in Seattle won't know it, and it won't bother them.
I have to say I loved the first part of the book. I thought it was witty and on the mark, and that Bernadette was a touching and brilliant renegade with her own drum- even if her drum needed some adjustment. Then it fell to "meh, not so much". Sigh. It wasn't laugh out loud funny. But big parts of it were entertaining. It just so lost me at the end.

I have to say that I first came across Blood Lad at Sakuracon when I went to the Yen Press panel they handed out among the free stuff volume 2 of Blood Lad. So I got volume 1 and read it. This is a really fun series. I read volume 3 the day i got it which was the release date and was ready for volume 4. I want to know whats really going on in this world. What is Staz's brother planning and what Staz's true feelings for Fuyumi are. Does he just want her blood or is there something else. I can't wait for the next volume.

Just as awesome...
By Brandon
I love this manga! Other manga haven't made me feel so good like this before except Umineko. The continuation begins when Fuyumi is captured and everyone does everything in their power to find her. The omnibus is the same size as the previous two, and as thick. The plot comes to light a little as we find out that *SPOILER/ the parents of Staz were murdered and Braz probably has a vendetta against the murderer involving the Akimu incident and the "Santa Claus" name he went by \*END OF SPOILER. So everything is starting to come together at a decent pace shaping the silhouette of an awesome plot with amazing characters! We also learn something about Fuyumi's mother and how she feels about being a ghost in the demon world. So I see some character development in a couple of characters that I'm sure will make you feel good and/or smile if you love this series as much as me :) I know I cried a little in one scene! And for those who ship Staz and Fuyumi definitely buy this manga ;) Anyone else who loves this manga hurry up and buy it! I'm sure you'll be at least satisfied xD

I Am the Mission (The Unknown Assassin), by Allen Zadoff

He was the perfect assassin.
Boy Nobody: No name. No past. No remorse. At least until he began to ask questions and challenge his orders -- until he fell in love with his target. Now The Program is worried that its valuable soldier has become a liability.
Boy Nobody, haunted by the outcome of his last assignment, is given a new mission. A test of sorts. A chance to show his loyalty.
His objective: Take out Eugene Moore, the owner of a military training and indoctrination camp for teenagers. One target. Limited time frame. Public place. It sounds simple, but a previous operative couldn't do it. He lost the mission and is presumed dead. Boy Nobody is confident he can finish the job. Quickly.
But when things go awry, Boy Nobody finds himself lost in a mission where nothing is as it seems: not The Program, his allegiances, or the truth.

The riveting second book in The Unknown Assassin series by Allen Zadoff delivers heart-pounding action and thought-provoking characters, as well as a new, exotic setting; a new mission; and new secrets to be revealed.

Awkward Bromance is Best Romance
By Ash Wednesday Lee
”Everyone in the world is a follower. They follow an agenda, whether it’s set by school, parents, a job, society. The only question is who or what they choose to follow. Most people don’t even realise there’s a choice to make, so they end up stumbling blindly through their lives, wondering why they’re so unhappy when they’re doing everything right.”
I can’t help but wonder if Allan Zadoff was a little frustrated that the title [I Am Number Four - because this would work brilliantly with I Am Number Five I think (hide spoiler)] has been taken and if it’s part of the reason behind the changes. From The Lost Mission to I Am the Mission, the second instalment in The Unknown Assassin series encourages paranoia, a little bit of nail-biting and hair-tearing and maybe one episode of explosive cussing on my part.

Set shortly after the events of I Am The Weapon, the assassin now known as Daniel is deployed by the program to complete the lost mission: kill Eugene Moore. Moore is a former US military officer currently leading The Liberty Camp, an extremist military training camp for the youth within the New Hampshire mountains. He has been targeted before by The Program and lost the operative in the process. It is up to Daniel to complete the task with one specific condition set by his superiors: he cannot enter the camp.

Through unforeseen circumstances, he of course enters the camp where he meets Moore and his family and gain an understanding of the philosophy he’s fighting for. What he discovers leads him to question the mission and, more importantly, his allegiances.

More than the adrenaline-pumped thrill, the more mature themes of loyalty, family, patriotism and all that which makes us human delivered in the stark, droning monotone of our narrator, what I liked most in this book is that there’s a clear direction as to where Zadoff wants to take Boy Nobody’s story. When I realised this was going to be a series, I was a bit concerned that it will take the “Villain of the Week” course where it will take endless filler books before we get to the essential questions: What is the Program? And what happened to the assassin’s father? In terms of the bigger story arc, this didn’t disappoint in the mileage it covered.

This was a little more political compared to the first instalment which cannot be helped seeing as the mission involves a radical idealist group. I didn’t mind it much, though I would’ve liked a bit more development in Moore’s character. I kept feeling this aims to make him out like Ed Harris’ character in The Rock, and I kept waiting to find that complex charismatic zealotry, that misdirected patriotism borne out of frustration from the system that would make me believe intelligent and rational people will leave the comforts of their lives to willingly follow his radical ideologies. It takes a certain kind of character to make that happen in a particular climate of discontent and disappointment, Eugene Moore was a half-baked version of it and I’m not sure the circumstances was built believably enough to pull it off.

One of the issues I had with I Am The Weapon was in it’s heroine, Samara. She was still a background presence in this one, a pervading regret and sadness in The Weapon’s thoughts. But a new femme fatale comes in to the picture, Moore’s daughter Miranda. I quite liked the potential in Miranda’s character but I grew to become more and more disappointed in how it became apparent that she’s just there for the hero to kiss and so that “breasts” can be factored in atleast one scene. So that we won’t forget that The Weapon is an attractive, virile young man, because James Bond made up all these rules and now we’re stuck with it. In truth, I enjoyed the chemistry between The Weapon and Francisco better, and with Howard the computer geek from book one, the best. But any of the Howard-archetypes in these kinds of stories always come out the fan-favorite so that’s hardly a surprise.
”You risked everything coming up here.”
“I know,” he said softly.
It means a lot to me.”
Before I can stop him, Howard rushes forward, squashing me in a bear hug.
Awkward bromance is best romance.

The build up was a little sluggish and I found my mind wandering in the early half, a bit bored by the robotic storytelling which didn’t bother me in the first book but starts to feel tiresome the second time around. But in the end this managed to use that to the story’s advantage, providing the necessary contrast in the twists that it chose to take. The resolution felt a little rushed, the ending an ellipsis rather than an exclamation point. But the shift from relying heavily on the “novelty” of a young assassin to one that focuses on the conflicts the concept of a human perfect soldier entails was much much more interesting. Not much of a departure from this series’ attempts in putting a YA spin to the Jason Bourne archetype true, but in terms of fun and adventure, Zadoff pulls it off with enough street-cred for me to set a side the book I’ve been waiting for all year just so I can finish this and finally take that exhale I've been delaying from page one.

A more human and vulnerable side of Boy Nobody
By Inspiring Insomnia
3.5 stars.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, I Am the Weapon, although I read it under its previous title, Boy Nobody. In this story, the assassin, Boy Nobody, is sent on a new mission, using the name, Daniel. My main problem with the story is that this felt so similar to the previous book - he is to assassinate a powerful man, but allows himself to get too close to the target's child(ren), a major violation of his training. It also seemed that in this book, much emphasis was placed on having characters tell Boy Nobody how fantastic his skills are. I don't remember this from the first book; it seemed we were shown these kills, and it wasn't necessary for other characters to hammer the point home by talking about it.

What I did love was how we get to see a more human, vulnerable side to Boy Nobody, and this side is revealed in a very interesting way. As for the ending - Allen Zadoff already proved he has a way with endings - and this one is exciting and intense, if not more than a little far-fetched. It plays out like a Tom Cruise scene from one of his many action films.

Despite a couple of reservations, I Am the Mission is a very good thriller, and a few last minute surprises at the end make me think that third book will be eve better.

Note: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

No Sophomore Slump Here! This is a Killer Series!
By DawnTeresa
I Am The Mission is no sophomore slump. It is a beautiful example of what happens when an author capitalizes on the spark of a strong series start in order to build a legitimate on-fire series.

In book two, Zadoff allows readers to revisit Boy Nobody with an added dose of complexity in both his character and his plot. This time around, readers benefit from a more thorough look into Boy Nobody’s head. And his mission is amped up a notch or two in intensity and unpredictability.

Thematically, there is still an exploration of topics like loyalty and trust, as well as individual choice versus determinism (or in Boy Nobody’s case, programming). While Boy Nobody was definitely an anti-hero in I Am The Weapon, in I Am The Mission he emerges as someone readers will accept and embrace as heroic.

In addition to a more richly drawn character study of our hero, the new batch of secondary characters is more compelling, and there’s a welcome reappearance of a character from book one. Once again, the storyline will keep you on your toes, taking several twists and turns, one or two of which may elicit a gasp from readers. As questions from the first installment are answered, more are raised, and the series strengthens its grip on the reader.

While I didn’t turn the pages of this sequel as rapidly as its predecessor, I didn’t enjoy it any less. The increased character development allowed a more meaningful emotional connection, and as a result, I found that I actually liked it better!

Verdict: 5 of 5 hearts. Highly Recommended!

This thrilling sequel will convince readers that series opener I Am The Weapon was no accident. I Am The Mission proves that readers who board The Unknown Assassin train are in for a heart-stopping ride! All aboard!

Great for kids
By David
I'm a brony so I get anything with MLP in it. So, I got this just to see what it was. It's just a very short (32 pages) book about the Mane 6, like their interests, what they're like. That sort of thing. The text is big and basic and it's fully illustrated on every page. it's intended to teach kids how to read better. It's not like the twilight sparkle and the crystal heart spell book or the comics.

If you're a parent who has kids that like MLP: this would be a really good buy. The book also lists four things for kids to find while reading. Those are Unicorn, Dragon, Orchard and Letter. Text scavenger hunt, basically. There's also a place at the beginning where they can write their name.

If you're a brony who just wants more MLP things: you can justify the purchase by the pictures which look really good. Some come straight from the show, others are drawn for the book but they look the same. The book only costs a few dollars anyway.

The passport to reading level 1 thing means:

(Straight from the book)

Passport to Reading Level 1: Reading Together (Read short words in simple sentence structures together to begin a reader's journey)

Passport to Reading Level 2: Reading out Loud (Encourage developing readers to sound out words in more complex stories with simple vocabulary)

Passport to Reading Level 3:Reading Independently (Newly independent readers gain confidence reading more complex sentences with higher word counts)

Passport to Reading Level 4: Ready to Read More (Readers prepare for chapter books with fewer illustrations and longer paragraphs)

So, I'd definitely recommend this to parents who have kids who like MLP but older fans can still get something out of the pictures.

Cute story
By Sprinklemonkey
This is a nice story and it kind of introduces you to the main 6 ponies. Surely your favorite is amongst those 6. The pictures are nice and bright and they look like the currant ponies. The story is a bit hard for a new reader to handle but that is why it is a level 1 read together book. My daughter 4 really enjoys reading this with me.

Intro to the ponies, my toddler loves it
By petite mommy
If you're looking for an intro to Ponyville's "Mane 6" then this is the perfect book for your little one. It's not a story, per se, it's a character identification reader of the main ponies (Applejack, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Twilight Sparkle, and Pinkie Pie) and their sidekick, Spike the dragon. Simple text, colorful pictures, and lightweight (good for bringing along to places you need toddler to sit for a bit with you). It's not a long book -- but the illustrations enchant my daughter. We haven't even watched the show or any of the videos, but she loves her ponies, and this piques her interest in them even more. I like that the writing segues into each pony as they finish the information about the previous one; I would've preferred a plot to the book, but then again, the title does say "Meet the Ponies", so there you go. It doesn't bother my daughter, so it doesn't bother me too much.

Delivers and then some!
By Howard Newville
This book is fantastic! What more could you want than over a hundred pages of puppies underwater? The introduction talks about how puppies are natural swimmers, and the importance of teaching swim safety to them. It also talks about the importance of adopting a rescue dog; many of the puppies photographed in this book are rescues. Then, it's picture after picture of adorabale puppies, making this a perfect coffee table book.

And just in case anyone is concerned about throwing puppies in water (I've read and responded to quite a few of those comments on social media), let me say that in the interest of full disclosure, I'm the owner of one of the puppies that made it into the book. Seth was amazing at introducing our then 11 week old into the water, and he had so much fun swimming that he kept going in and in and in.

A Thousand Hills to Heaven: Love, Hope, and a Restaurant in Rwanda, by Josh Ruxin

One couple's inspiring memoir of healing a Rwandan village, raising a family near the old killing fields, and building a restaurant named Heaven.
Newlyweds Josh and Alissa were at a party and received a challenge that shook them to the core: do you think you can really make a difference? Especially in a place like Rwanda, where the scars of genocide linger and poverty is rampant?

While Josh worked hard bringing food and health care to the country's rural villages, Alissa was determined to put their foodie expertise to work. The couple opened Heaven, a gourmet restaurant overlooking Kigali, which became an instant success. Remarkably, they found that between helping youth marry their own local ingredients with gourmet recipes (and mix up "the best guacamole in Africa") and teaching them how to help themselves, they created much-needed jobs while showing that genocide's survivors really could work together.
While first a memoir of love, adventure, and family, A THOUSAND HILLS TO HEAVEN also provides a remarkable view of how, through health, jobs, and economic growth, our foreign aid programs can be quickly remodeled and work to end poverty worldwide.

From Publishers Weekly
Part memoir, part history lesson, part discourse on how to make a public health project work using business standards, the story of Ruxin's life in Rwanda is riveting and inspirational. Although the author denies that the book is "about genocide," it is indeed imbued with the stories of the "the unspeakably dark times" in this African country's history. When Ruxin, a Fulbright scholar and public health activist, and his wife arrived in Rwanda in 2005, his mission was to create health facilities that worked, addressing the problems of AIDS, malaria, TB, and widespread malnourishment. The newlywed Manhattan couple said "a huge good-bye to everything they knew," procuring one-way airfare and a home directly across from the infamous Hotel Rwanda. In time, Ruxin (now on the faculty at Columbia University) received approval from the Rwandan government to pursue his Millennium Village Project. The bad news was that the area they ended up in was Mayange, a five-village cluster of dust and despair, lacking in any sense of community. The couple soon opened a restaurant called Heaven. Ruxin recounts how he and a top-notch team of health experts, organizers, agronomists, and others turned Mayange into a productive model that was eventually replicated in other locations. He also details the parallel development of a restaurant called Heaven, which was the brainchild of his wife, Alissa, who is also trained in public health. From the depths of destruction to "Heaven," Ruxin chronicles the regeneration of this remarkable country, ultimately revealing the healing power of forgiveness and hope.

Review
2014 Nautilus Award Gold Winner

"An absorbing and affecting narrative." -- New York Times

"Part memoir, part history lesson, part discourse on how to make a public health project work using business standards, the story of Ruxin's life in Rwanda is riveting and inspirational.... From the depths of destruction to "Heaven," Ruxin chronicles the regeneration of this remarkable country, ultimately revealing the healing power of forgiveness and hope." -- Publishers Weekly

"The upbeat story of an American couple raising their three children in Rwanda and making a huge difference in the lives of thousands.... A personal adventure tale with a serious message for those concerned with eradicating poverty." -- Kirkus

"Even those disinterested in the wonk of development work will be enchanted by the characters in A THOUSAND HILLS TO HEAVEN." -- The Daily Beast

"Josh Ruxin is a dynamic and creative leader in the fight for Health for All in Africa and the world. His stories are like Josh himself: lively, interesting, and inspiring. Read this terrific book and you'll be filled with ideas of how you too can help to change the world." -- Jeffrey D. Sachs, director, The Earth Institute at Columbia University, author of To Move the World

"Heart-wrenching. Heart-warming. Poignant. Inspirational. Written with uncommon empathy and deftly turned phrases, full of entrepreneurial idealism tempered by hard-boiled common sense, and told with a modesty worthy of Mother Teresa and a page-turning suspense reminiscent of Stieg Larsson, A Thousand Hills to Heaven may well be the most meaningful book you read this year." -- Steven Raichlen, author of Planet Barbecue and host of Primal Grill on PBS

"Josh Ruxin is an entrepreneur for the 21st century who works at the intersection of health and business. His book beautifully captures his family's experiences and their ground-breaking - and often tasty - initiatives." -- Ambassador Mark R. Dybul, Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

"This breezy memoir traces a wide-eyed do-gooder American duo from their naïve arrival to Rwanda, across years of work and lessons learned with the poor, concluding with a boutique bed-and-breakfast called Heaven. Wild ride." -- Laurie Garrett, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations

"Josh Ruxin limns the trajectory of his work, and his family's life, against the backdrop of a country's transformation. As all of us privileged to work in Rwanda know, there are remarkable opportunities-and stories-here, personal, professional, and universal. Some of these are recounted in A Thousand Hills to Heaven, Ruxin's account of the origins and growth of a project, a family, and a restaurant." -- Dr. Paul Farmer, Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Partners In Health

"Ruxin's work in Rwanda is an inspiration and in this book, he brings his insights and experience right to you. It's a moving, extraordinary journey that's worth sharing with your friends and your family." -- Larry King, host of Larry King Now

"Ruxin's story offers a window into the painful past and promising future of a nation ravaged by genocide and now bursting with potential. In a voice both compassionate and pragmatic, Ruxin offers a repudiation of conventional wisdom on international development work, making the case for a response that is at once creative and integrated, bold and humble. But the success of the book is that this lesson is delivered through an intensely personal narrative - tracking a decade in the life of a young couple through love and loss, certainty and doubt. This book is at times wrenching, at times hilarious and always honest. And perhaps its greatest feat is in calling the reader to account for our own choices - when have we failed to venture off the safe, well-trodden path? What would it take to choose an inspired life, driven daily by a higher purpose? How much are we willing to risk in the pursuit of a calling?" -- Rabbi Sharon Brous, IKAR

"A memoir of love, adventure, and family, A THOUSAND HILLS TO HEAVEN also provides a remarkable view of how, through health, jobs and economic growth, our foreign aid programs can be quickly remodeled and work to end poverty worldwide." -- Mother Nature Network

"A Thousand Hills to Heaven is a memoir of making the impossible possible. The Ruxins created a model for success, and helped bring health and happiness to a region that desperately needed it."―Kurt Michael Friese, Civil Eats

Good story well told, spoiled by pontificating
By Marc Luoma
A Thousand Hills to Heaven is definitely a mixed bag. Mr. Ruxin is a good storyteller, and he has a good story to tell. If he would have left it at that and not made judgments about development in general, the book would have been much more entertaining, meaningful, and easy to stomach. I live and work in Kigali, and have devoted my life to development work: while Josh's unique experience in Rwanda makes a good story, it is a single unique experience, from which it's impossible to make preachy pronouncements about development in general.

He writes in a breezy style that's not too serious, but still handles the most serious of subjects (the genocide) in a meaningful way. While telling the story of his and his wife's development work and building the restaurant, he also tells the story of post-genocide Rwanda, an amazing story of healing, growth, and good governance. His story is full of likable, if one-dimensional, characters, His descriptions of rural Rwanda and metropolitan Kigali are spot-on, and create a rich tapestry on which to weave his family story. In the end you're very happy for Josh and his wife for what they've been able to accomplish, in the districts, and at Heaven, the restaurant. (Speaking of which, I've eaten at Heaven and while there are now many good restaurants in Kigali, Heaven must be in the top 10.)

Ruxin's development story is unique: his rich and rock-star friends give him unlimited funds with no strings attached, and he spends it how he likes, on the programs that suit him. Of course this is a success story. And it's a success to be celebrated. Sadly, Ruxin can't stop there, but must pontificate and denigrate the vast majority of development workers that do not have his freedom. Day-in-day-out workers who must account to governments for their investments are cast as corrupt money wasters for "writing reports." While Bono doesn't care where the money went, US congress does, and wants a record of it. All this could have been avoided by not using his enviable position as a hill from which to throw stones.

Not your typical development book
By Jennifer Lee
Josh does a wonderful job of weaving together three seemingly unrelated topics - love/family, development work, and food - into a warm and honest memoir. His story is at once his own as well as the stories of all the incredible people he meets and works side-by-side with in Rwanda to transform a region devastated by the genocide, build one of Kigali's finest restaurants, and start a family. His points on international development are insightful and refreshing, and could only be derived from someone who has worked and lived overseas (from the U.S.) in an emerging economy for an extensive period of time. If you're looking for a book that will take you on an adventure, tickle your intellect, and challenge your perceptions of how things should be - all while being very easy and enjoyable to read - then this is the book for you. Definitely not your typical book on global health, international development, aid work, poverty reduction, etc. etc. - which is a very good thing.

A well-crafted and inspirational read.
By Nancy E. Uslan
Josh Ruxin's book A Thousand Hills to Heaven is a must-read for college students, international businesspeople and global entrepreneurs. Best Practice Principles are clearly defined, based on trial and error.

It's extraordinary how much Josh Ruxin and his wife, Alissa, have accomplished in the relatively short period of time they've spent in Rwanda. Their passion for finding answers to "critical need" and willingness to listen to and learn from Rwandans have enabled them to discover how to be effective instruments of change in a vastly different culture. Life and lives have been altered forever because they have created an environment of hope through economic development and unique health initiatives.

If you've been to Rwanda, Josh’s evocative descriptions will bring back the sights, sounds and smells. The book made me laugh out loud and even cry a little while empowering me to continue my own efforts in the country. A well-crafted and inspirational read.
