Remarkably Fresh, Original and Engaging

I've been reading an awful lot of middle grade fiction lately, and at some point many of the books start to blend together into one sort-of-bland, definitely predictable, mega book, with slightly worn out characters and plots. But every now and then you encounter something that is so fresh, sharp and well done that you just have to pause in admiration. To my mind, that's what you have here.

First off, and most importantly, this book pulls off the almost impossible task of having a zany, quirky plot and characters, while still having a narrative voice that is wise, authentic and almost ruefully honest. So, on the one hand you have an over the top plot, and over the top secondary characters, but it's not all just frantic silliness. It is grounded by three heroes, River, Freak and Fiona, who feel real, sound real, and act real. They are also funny, perceptive, creative and engaging. They are distinct, personable and freshly imagined. The book is loaded with funny throwaway lines and perceptive observations and insights about school and middle grade life. And it is grounded by a deadpan delivery and a light authorial touch.

And maybe that's what really powers this book. It feels fresh and original. Nothing is forced or manic. Everything is custom made and while it is unpredictable because just slightly off kilter, it is also recognizable and genuine. As a bonus, snappy dialogue is just a bit snappier, and everything - descriptions, little bits of business, snarky or wry asides - is brighter, sharper, and more appealing than you would normally expect.

Bear with me while I offer an example of what I mean. There must be some rule that any middle grade book has to have a physical description of the narrator, (age, height, body type and especially hair and eye color), within the first five pages, or the book can't be published. Usually the narrator looks in a mirror. Here, the narrator River observes that people think he must be related to Max Schimmelhorn because Max is short and thin and red-haired. So, our author provides the required description, but in a novel fashion. That's what I mean about the author's approach being new and clever and fresh. He observes all of the conventions, but tweaks them in a very engaging way.

For what it's worth, there is a fairly long "Click to Look Inside" sample on the Amazon page. That sample is a fair representation of the style and substance of the book and will give a very good idea of what the book is like. What a nice find.

A Story with Humor and Heart (and Tessering Sofas)

This story was a combination of fantastical elements and elements common to all middle schoolers. It had a couch with dragon feet that could tesser (Loved the shout out to A Wrinkle in Time!), a talking domino, an inside out universe, and a villain who wants to use mind control enhanced by cell phones and snack food to take over the world. It also had an orphaned main character, a color blind main character who loved science, and a main character who was dealing with an alcoholic and angry father.

River, Freak and Fiona are the only kids still living in an abandoned subdivision. An underground coal fire has made the area dangerous. When they come upon an old sofa outside an old and scary mansion, they don't imagine that they will soon be involved with trying to save the world.

I liked the sly humor that permeated this story. I also liked River's thoughtful narration. I liked the way he was equally accepting of the magical sofa and his own state as an orphan. He was a typical middle schooler cycling by the moment from child to young adult. He was also courageous and intelligent.

The plot which involved a rare zucchini color crayon and a villain with Compulsive Completist Disorder which compels him to drop his plans of world conquest to complete his collections. The story is filled with action that will appeal to middle schoolers. From exploring the dangerous Hellsboro with its underground coal fires to runaway hot air balloons, the action never stops.

I think this book will appeal to many upper elementary and middle school students.

Beautiful

Books like this is the main reason why I don't read everything on Kindle: the large format is magical! It will probably take no more than 2 hours to read every story of the book, but you could look at pictures for days and ponder the archetypes used in the book for years. The quality of writing is excellent: ancient myths (also biblical) are reimagined in new circumstances and retold in a contemporary film language, There are also some myths that probably are invented by the author but have that ancient feel. In a way this is similar to Michael Ende's "Neverending Story" which is the highest compliment I could give to a book (warning: the Encyclopeadia is wonderful but not THAT exceptional). Writing is non-linear, in places - encyclopedic, but somehow, having read the whole book, there is an impression of an almost coherent whole.

Irreverent and well-crafted

Isabel Greenberg came out of nowhere for me, and I'm so glad I found her. It's hard to believe this is her first graphic novel. "The Encyclopedia of Early Earth" is unique in a lot of ways. It pulls off a text-heavy format better than many comics I've seen, with really snappy prose. The artwork is simple, with a measured use of color that really makes it pop off the page. The story is full of love and magic and all the things that make a really good fable. That said, in keeping with that fable-esque tone, the characters sometimes lack depth. However, they're always interesting to read about.

Delightful in the moments you don't expect

In The Encyclopedia of Early Earth, Isabel Greenberg has crafted an inviting chronicle consisting of the fantastic and the familiar. It's the story of a Nord man discovering his soul mate on the other side of the world, and is also the story of everything that ever came before including the beginning of time itself. Some of the origin stories you'll be accustomed to since many of them mirror what's written in various religious texts. And being able to recognize where humanity's collective stories intersect with Greenberg's imagination assuredly adds to the enjoyment.

Gripping, intense, well written debut novel by Jacqueline Green

I received an ARC in a contest giving away books.

Truth or Dare was a pleasant surprise after reading some disappointing books prior to it. I usually don't like more than alternating POV's but Green does a great job getting us into the heads of three very different girls: Sydney, the artsy photographer, with a deadly secret, Caitlin, a pretty and popular but sweet girl who is buckling under pressure to get into Harvard, and Tenley, the mean girl who left town and is back to reclaim her throne. Soon, we realize that someone is playing a very nasty trick on these three girls and somehow, they are connected in ways we don't know. Will they figure out who is playing them before it's too late?

I loved the prose in this novel. Usually in books like these that sort of represent the Christopher Pike genre back in the day are not very well written (i.e. the recent Ten), and I can barely get through them. But this book is very well written, and every description is meaningful, every word is on purpose. The plot is very fast paced, and while I figured out who the trickster is about 25% in, I didn't really care because I wanted to find out what happened to the girls, and there are plenty of other mysteries that need to be solved on the sidelines. It was really worth the ride. I started to care or at least be interested in each of the characters and their many secrets and was definitely surprised by many of them.

So you are probably asking now, so why only 4 stars? Honestly, I totally would have given in 5 except for the really big fact that this is the FIRST BOOK IN A TRILOGY. I feel like the remaining mysteries could have been resolved pretty easily in the first and made this an extremely strong stand alone. Instead, this story is going to be dragged out for two more books? Of similar length? (this isn't a short book). I can't say that I'm that excited to pick up the next one, although Green is undoubtedly talented, but I think this was not the right move.

Overall, a well written, gripping, intense ride in three points of views-- you'll want to pick this one up. But just beware, it's the first in a trilogy.

Truth or Dare- more than just a game. Great book!

I don't know where to start! The book has so much going for it that kept me turning the pages and wondering what would happen next. Truth or Dare, in my world has always been a kid's game but with Tenley and Caitlin, they take it to a new level. Tenley and Caitlin live in a small seaside town and become the popular girls. As the girls got older, they have included others in their game and humiliation and embarrassment are just part of the game. Tenley moves away and in her senior year of high school she finally moves back and she wants it to be like old time but Caitlin has another new bestie, Emerson. I don't have to tell you how this agrees with the girls, but the drama is just beginning. Tenley decides to have a huge party and with all the drinking, the two girls decide to play Truth or Dare. Anyone can play and that is when the ball starts rolling as we start to see how some individuals really are, for what they say and what they make other do really says something about them. For after this night, some individuals at the party will never want to play this game again. A new darer starts to terrorize some of the girls with some typed notes making them do some activities that push their boundaries. These girls fear the darer's retaliation of revealing their past secrets that only each of the girls knows and this put everyone on edge. You can't flip the pages fast enough with all the suspense and the secret finger pointing, to find out who is slipping in these notes in and why. The connection between the characters is so mixed, that I loved it! Some friendships are not questioned but others are put to the test as the tension of the new darer has them inquiring the integrity of the individual. They are being pulled like a stretched piece of taffy- just waiting for the tension to be too much and it breaks.
I loved the way the characters all relayed their stories to you so you got to see the story from all angles. It kept the story fresh and made you not take sides and although I thought I had the story figured out, I had to keep changing my mind as each character kept covering up those tracks for me. The author did a fabulous job revealing to the reader just a little bit of information at a time to keep the suspense flowing and not overwhelm you with details. Besides dealing with the high school crowd, the girls also had other relationships and that added drama to the story. Each girl brought her family into the picture and that added baggage to what they were also dealing with so you got the whole picture here. You got to see the girl's lives from all angles and see the story played out. Great read!!

I was hoping that Truth or Dare by Jacqueline Green was going to be a read similar to a movie that I loved back in the day, I Know What You Did Last Summer. A suspense, thriller type read that would keep on the edge of my seat.

What started off as hopeful...petered out for me. It became a really repetitive plotline, with an ending that was easily predictable. And a cliffhanger type ending that should've had me excited for book two, kind of had me rolling my eyes thinking...here we go again...

The story revolves around 3 girls in the town of Echo Bay, Tenley, Caitlin, and Sydney.

Tenley has just returned to Echo Bay after having moved away years ago. After her mother has married one of the richest men in the area, Tenley returns with a goal of being one of the most popular girls again with a reputation of throwing killer parties which are known to be legendary due to their "intense" games of truth or dare. But upon her return, it seems that someone else has decided to take the game to a whole new level with Tenley as one of the targets... and they will stop at nothing to get Tenley to continue to play their heartless game...including revealing secrets that Tenley wants to keep hidden.

Sydney has always been on the outside looking in. With a past that has suddenly come back to haunt her which mimicks that games that she loathed in her younger days, Truth or Dare, Sydney finds solace behind the lens of her camera. But when things start to spiral out of control, Sydney's urge to go back to the things she used to do to release her anger is getting stronger and stronger every day. And when the dares that she is given start to unravel dark secrets of those closest to her, Sydney's not sure if her camera is enough to tame the beast sleeping inside of her.

Caitlin is still recovering from her past. A past where she was kidnapped and drugged. Still struggling to remember the events of that awful time in her life where her memories have been repressed, a stalker's rendition of Truth or Dare is getting to be too much for her to handle. Not only does she need to worry about having someone who hides behind typed messages who is trying to destroy her reputation, the memories that she had repressed all those years ago are slowly coming back to the surface.

Truth or Dare by Jacqueline Green started off promising. The author provided an excellent background to the three main characters, with information being given throughout the book. The characters all had their own individual personalities which will give readers an opportunity to connect with one. But there were some things in the book that kind of ewwwed me out. For example, a slightly unhealthy obsession between stepbrother and stepsister.

With the introduction of the first dare, I was ready to get into and totally absorbed into the book. But, I personally, thought that there were way too many. Like, way too many. For me, it came to the point where there wasn't any shock and awe for me. I felt like I didn't have time to absorb the first few dares that came, but instead dares were coming at me left and right.

As I said earlier, the ending was easily predictable, for me. There were a lot of things that were left unresolved, although I'm sure they were left that way in preparation for book 2. But there's one thing that I wish I would have found out...and it involves Caitlin's past.

I recommend this read to fans of whodunit type reads and to movies/books similar to that of I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Smells like Pirates one of the best books I've ever read.

I really like how the book gets people who have no idea about treasure hunting to think about it a little. I liked that the book wasn't written only for those that enjoy and understand treasure hunting. I thought there was a good blend of humor, action and a lot of different stuff. I'm hoping the next book is 'Smells Like Temples'. I hope that this review was helpful. A must read!

He received bachelor of arts degrees in philosophy and English from Amherst College and wrote what would become his first novel, The Broom of the System, as his senior English thesis. He received a masters of fine arts from University of Arizona in 1987 and briefly pursued graduate work in philosophy at Harvard University. His second novel, Infinite Jest, was published in 1996. Wallace taught creative writing at Emerson College, Illinois State University, and Pomona College, and published the story collections Girl with Curious Hair, Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, Oblivion, the essay collections A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again, and Consider the Lobster. He was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship, a Lannan Literary Award, and a Whiting Writers' Award, and was appointed to the Usage Panel for The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language. He died in 2008. His last novel, The Pale King, was published in 2011.

Not sure what I am missing...

I have read the other reviews on this book and they are overwhelmingly positive. So I am not sure what it is that I am missing. This is my first introduction to David Foster Wallace and his writing style, so I am not sure if this book is typical of his work or not. Perhaps it is an acquired taste? Maybe his other works are different?
Let me first state that I am a huge fan of hip-hop and rap and as such was excited to get this book and read more about the genre and its origins. As a West Coast teen in the late 80's N.W.A. and Ice-T were constantly playing on my Walkman. So I am definitely a fan of the music and genre as a whole.
The book: I am not sure how to express my disappointment with this book. I do not have the words to properly convey how horrible the reading experience was for me. I recognize that the co-author Costello openly admits that his book is a collection of essays by DFW and they put the book together after the fact, so that may contribute to the challenges I had with this book. But the material reads like a sociologist's jumble of field notes and observations. The thoughts are rarely coherent or build one upon the next. The writing style is frantic and just overwhelmingly long-winded. I am not an English or Literature teacher, so I am not an expert when it comes to syntax, grammar, punctuation, and proper writing conventions but it does not take a scholar to recognize that this book is a mess. There are run-on sentences that go on and on full of circular reasoning that just muddy the waters and confuse the topic at hand. The author often diverges off of the topic to bring in other elements in order to prove a point or offer background on the social climate of the time. The stories themselves are fine, but they are too long and presented in a way that detract from the main topic: RAP.
As one other reviewer wrote, there are paragraphs upon paragraphs about an I Dream of Jeannie sequence during the race riots in Tampa. The story just goes on and on and the author writes his own fantasy episode reflecting the attitudes and mindset of the black population in Florida. The sequence is just too long and goes beyond the point of adding relevant information. There are several other instances that the author brings in stories to establish a point, but the stories just go on and on and fill pages for the sake of filling pages. I get it, Rap music was not born in a vacuum. In order to truly understand early Rap we need to understand what these artists were facing in society and the challenges they dealt with. The angst of social injustices of those times, the lack of Punk Rock's ability to properly express or represent the plight of the Black Man... That is essential to understanding the story line and evolution of Rap, but the author does such a poor job of weaving these stories seamlessly into the book. This is my biggest challenge with this book. There is no unifying story here. There is nothing that ties one chapter to the next. There is no progression or building of an actual story. When I finished, I did not feel as though I read a book, but rather spent 3 days trudging through the ramblings of Rap fan, not the work of an esteemed author.

Dense, Clever, Fun, Informative

Wallace and Costello, a matching I had no idea even existed until seeing this book pop up among DFW's other works after ordering Pale King, wrote a great lil book of open-ended arguments and riff off of each other's love for hip-hop in the late 1980's. Learned a lot about Schooly D, and plenty of cleverly written anecdotes are bound within these pages. Great little argument by Costello regarding the sampling of the theme song for "I Dream of Geannie" in a Public Enemy (I think it was them? Now I can't remember if it was them or DJ Jazzy Jeff. Probably neither) song and how this doesn't show any barriers are being broken down between opposite communities i.e. Black people cherry picking theme songs from sitcoms intended for a primarily white audience to show how they aren't particularly different in finding their tastes, but rather is an example of how alien these communities are to one another. Either way, great read, and fascinating if you're into dense prose on the subject of hip-hop across the nation in the late 80's. Enjoy!

Surprisingly still relevant!

Oddly prescient. The text is a little tortured, especially as DFW is attempting to wrap his gift for deep insight and reconcile it with a sentence structure he would later master, but it's a worthwhile read. Especially when you realize how little things have changed over the years; this could be a 33 1/3 book spanning a genre published in 2015.

The moment I started reading this manga (it was up to volume 16 at the time) I was instantly hooked. When I heard about a lot of manga collections being turned into omnibus editions I was glad to see this one made the cut. 400+ pages of pure badassery, recommended!

Mamoru aka "Blade", resumes his mission in protecting Haruka, the young girl that has the ability to see the future. But this time, things are becoming more hectic as the entire underground is after her. A separate organization joins the Element Network, to protect the girl and ensure Blade isn't a major threat. More characters join the fray, and things heat up when a new villain is introduced to take down Blade. This manga is just as good as the first, if not better. Sit back, relax, and enjoy some slice-n-dice action.

Do you trust me....

This book started out being one of thousands. A girl experiences a devastating life changing event. She suffers the effects by alienating her friends and becoming a shadow of her former self. A tragic story that portrays the harsh realities of high school. It was incredibly well written, but I kept thinking..."This has been done, what makes this book unique?"

Colleen Clayton answered my question by developing a story that invaded my thoughts, my emotions, and has me down on my knees begging for a sequel! I'm not going to lie, the first half of the book was a bit slow. I felt like the story wasn't going anywhere...it was stuck, but patience is a virtue my friends and thank God I wore my virtue today!

I can't even begin to put into words what I felt for Corey. He not only won my heart, but everything attached to it. I guarantee that he'll steal your heart too and I promise you won't ask for it back.

Books have their imperfections, What Happens Next is no different, but the author gave me something that erased all things short of perfect and delivered something so powerful.

I think the turning point was when the relationship between Cassidy and Corey really began to develop. The last few chapters were...are...they were...EPIC. Yes, I used the word epic. I loved everything about them except the very, very end. I needed more (God, please tell me there's more). I wish the beginning was less and the end was more, but I'm left with an appreciation and a gratefulness that I was able to experience this amazing book. Please trust me on this. Push through the imperfections to be left with a story that invades your heart and touches the soul. READ ON!!!

Sid Murphy Stuck With Me

Clayton's vision of teen angst is spot on. I am far removed from the halls of high school, but I couldn't put this book down. It wasn't long before I knew Sid and started rooting for her. Friends, young love, great music and tough topics make this debut novel a rising star. I started reading slower the closer I came to the end because I didn't want to close the book on Sid. I suspect it won't be long before Colleen Clayton is a household name. For me, Judy Blume was the young-adult author of my generation. This generation will have Clayton.

Contemporary, and Heartbreaking...
By This Girl Reads A Lot
Contemporary, heartbreaking, and devestatingly real. I felt moved to tears. I'll be thinking about this book..for a long time.

The plot would at first seem similar to other novels but the author expertly weaves a tale from a character who seems just like "you," the girl you know but whose story you don't."

This story broke and warmed my heart. The characters were shockingly relatable. I felt like I knew them...personally. You couldn't help but fall in love with them.

It is this realization that you can go through something extremely tragic and persevere. You don't have to let everything that's wrong take away everything that's right and if you do you can always go back. That's what you take away from this book.

I'm so glad to have read it.
