C.J. SANSOM REWRITES HISTORY IN A THRILLING NOVEL THAT DARES TO IMAGINE BRITAIN UNDER THE THUMB OF NAZI GERMANY.

1952. Twelve years have passed since Churchill lost to the appeasers and Britain surrendered to Nazi Germany. The global economy strains against the weight of the long German war against Russia still raging in the east. The British people find themselves under increasingly authoritarian rule--the press, radio, and television tightly controlled, the British Jews facing ever greater constraints.

But Churchill's Resistance soldiers on. As defiance grows, whispers circulate of a secret that could forever alter the balance of the global struggle. The keeper of that secret? Scientist Frank Muncaster, who languishes in a Birmingham mental hospital.

Civil Servant David Fitzgerald, a spy for the Resistance and University friend of Frank's, is given the mission to rescue Frank and get him out of the country. Hard on his heels is Gestapo agent Gunther Hoth, a brilliant, implacable hunter of men, who soon has Frank and David's innocent wife, Sarah, directly in his sights.

C.J. Sansom's literary thriller Winter in Madrid earned Sansom comparisons to Graham Greene, Sebastian Faulks, and Ernest Hemingway. Now, in his first alternative history epic, Sansom doesn't just recreate the past--he reinvents it. In a spellbinding tale of suspense, oppression and poignant love, DOMINION dares to explore how, in moments of crisis, history can turn on the decisions of a few brave men and women--the secrets they choose to keep and the bonds they share.

A remarkable and memorable book. Thrilling and Inventive.
By Aspen
This is a truly remarkable book for a number of reasons. Firstly, it's a top rate thriller. The plot is strongly driven by richly drawn and diverse characters and a plausible setting. The setting is remarkable because it's an alternative world where real events from 1939 onwards are different. An alternative 1950s Britain is the setting for a tale which builds slowly as various elements are introduced and ultimately brought together. Mr Sansom is a first rate storyteller. 'Dominion' demonstrates the strength and skill of his writing in that he asks the reader to believe in fiction as fact as the basic premise.

And I did. I grew up in 1950's Britain and recognised the numerous cultural, social and political references around which the story is woven. This is the skill of a great storyteller; Mr Sansom has created a narrative 'trompe l'oeil'. Although I knew that what I was reading was fiction, I was drawn in to believing that the 'factual' setting was true. The involvement of a range of political figures gives vital substance to the plot and setting. This book is an extraordinary risk for an author who has a tried and tested approach with the Shardlake series. A brave departure and he pulls it off in style.

For me, this is a masterpiece. It's contemporary writing at its very best. I rarely read a book on day of publication, but this one was absorbing and totally rewarding in terms of enjoyment and escapism. Rich and realistic dialogue, a cast of characters and an allegorical alter reality. It's gripping and great stuff. Don't hesitate to buy it.

Interesting look at "what-if".
By Jill Meyer
British author C J Sansom is best known for his lawyer Matthew Shardlake series, set during the reign of Henry VIII. He's also written one "stand-alone", "Winter in Madrid", which is set in 1940's Spain. With "Dominion", his latest stand-alone, Sansom returns with an alternative-history novel. What-if Britain had sued for peace in May 1940 and a fascist-friendly government had taken over in London? What-if the Brits had chaffed under the rule of Germany? What-if, what-if, WHAT-IF? As Sansom states in his afterword, he owes a nod to fellow British author Robert Harris for his counter-factual police procedural "Fatherland", published about 20 years ago.

"Dominion" is a very good read for the arm-chair historian, interested in the 1940's and 1950's. It's less successful as a thriller/procedural. For one thing, the book is simply too long and has too many characters and plot points. And one of the plot points - a secret that both British and German security services is trying to track down - is simply illogical.

But is "Dominion" worth reading? Yup, and part of the reason is the fact that it is a long book with too many characters and plot points. While that sounds counter-intuitive, the reality is that the book challenges the reader to look at history as it might have happened, rather than how it did happen. It also challenged the author to take the facts - real and made-up - and weave them into a narrative that encourages the reader to continue. And I think C J Sansom succeeds, and by succeeding in his end, the reader gets an interesting book. I am, though, rating the book at 4 stars instead of 5 because of the illogical plot point. I'd love to hear from other readers/reviewers what they think.

Dominion
By S Riaz
As C.J.Sansom writes my favourite historical mystery series of all time, in the Shardlake books, I picked this up with a great deal of expectation. Set in 1952 it presents an alternate version of history - asking "what if" England had made a Peace Treaty with Germany after Dunkirk? For David Fitzgerald, a civil servant in the Dominion's office, it meant that he felt defeated and humiliated after serving in Norway. It means armed Special Branch Auxiliaries on the streets to deal with civil unrest, a young Queen uncomfortable and under pressure, Churchill in hiding after leading his followers out of parliament, a Soviet War which has raged for eleven years, Joe Kennedy as US Ambassador, India still fighting for independence, all Jewish citizens forced to wear the Star of David (although being typically English, it is in the form of a lapel badge, discreet racism but still very much there) and a country trying to appease the Germans at every turn.

Much of what is truly brilliant about this novel is the picture Sansom paints of England as it could have been. Drab, dreary, with 'make do and mend' still very much in force. With Europe still very much under the thumb of their German masters, most of Europe's Jewish population deported to the East and Hitler elderly and frail, the infighting for power already beginning amongst those in power. Although some people have found the novel a little long winded (and I do understand why), I think the scene setting was important. We quickly understand the depression the country, and Europe is in. Leningrad starved, Europe's Jewish population disappeared, Churchill underground. Yet, still, some of Europe is still fighting back. David Fitzgerald is drawn into the resistance through his work at the Dominion's office and his friendship with Dr Frank Muncaster, a scientist he knew at University, who is now in a mental hospital after suffering a breakdown. There is something Frank knows, information which means it is dangerous he fall into enemy hands. As Sturmbannfuhrer Gunther Hoth arrives in London from Berlin to investigate, the resistance must move fast to stop them discovering his secrets.

Sansom is truly a brilliant author. As well as creating an atmospheric location in fog bound London, he makes all the characters sympathetic in some way. There are no clear cut baddies here - you sympathise almost as much with the weary and disullusioned Hoth and the over eager Special Branch police inspector Syme (who little knows how his life lies in the balance) as you do with David Fitzgerald. Some relationships, such as the lovelorn but brave Carol, who works in David's office, and David's wife Sarah, are beautifully written. The other main female character, Natalia, did not work as well perhaps, but overall this novel is a triumph. Indeed, what the novel truly does tell us, is that some things were worth fighting for and the unimaginable vision of England under fascist rule is one that does cause you to feel grateful for the freedom we sometimes take for granted.

Fun books for the whole family that we keep reading over and over again.
By ehoward29
My son loves these books. We wanted to get him the fourth book for Easter, since our local library didn't carry the fourth one, but I could fins a copy for less than $30, and this set was approx $50. The four book set comes with a case and was nicely shrink wrapped upon arrival. My wife and I, being big Muppet fans outselves, have really enjoyed reading these books with our son. We try (with varying success) to do all of the voices and the muppet characters speak just enough to make it fun, but not so much that an amateur impressionist parent isn't overwhelmed. I would recommend these book to any kid 2nd-6th grader who likes the Muppets or just kid who enjoys a hijinks filled story, kind of like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books.

Review
"The best-looking book I've ever seen. . . . The book is so perfectly realized that it's easy to fall under its spell. . . . If you want to write a romantic mystery meta-novel in which two bibliophiles investigate the conspiracy around an enigmatic Eastern European author, you couldn't choose a better team." --Joshua Rothan, New Yorker

"Impressively smart, engaging . . . Filled with secrets and stories that are endlessly beguiling and inviting . . . Reading S., and trying to decode everything [was] an incredibly enjoyable, fun experience, as well as a particularly immersive one. . . . For all its mysteries and intrigues, this is a book about the value of books, and what they can offer us that other storytelling mediums cannot." --Wired

"S. is gorgeous, a masterpiece of verisimilitude. . . . The book's spiritual cousin is A.S. Byatt's Possession. . . . The brilliance of S. is less in its showy exterior than the intimate and ingeniously visual way it shows how others' words become pathways to our lives and relationships." --Washington Post

"Both as literature and as a physical object, S. is a profound and tremendous work of art. . . . Brilliantly conceived and perfectly executed, the book harkens back to a golden age of storytelling. . . . An audacious literary achievement that calls to mind Vladimir Nabokov's Pale Fire, Chris Ware's Building Stories and even Charles Portis' Masters of Atlantis." --Miami Herald

"Reading S. is fun, and the book feels alive . . . Gloriously embroidered with marginalia and jammed with artifacts inserted between its pages . . . A celebration of the book as a physical thing." --Chicago Tribune

"Both as literature and as a physical object, S. is a profound and tremendous work of art."―The Miami Herald

My Review and a Guide to Reading the Book. ***UPDATED***
By Veltscroll
I read a lot of books, and I often love what I read, but I literally (no pun intended) have not been this excited about reading a book since I was a kid. It's not just the story (or should I say stories), or all the ephemera and the clever, well-produced presentation. It's how it all combines to actually make you feel like you're in on it. That you're trying to figure it all out right along with Jen and Eric. Reading and re-reading The Ship of Theseus for clues and inferences to what's happening in the "real world". The whole time watching as J&E's relationship evolves. Then, if you're really adventurous, and you start tapping Google to expand your research, you'll find that the experience goes beyond the book. (Google: Eotvos Wheel) ***I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU DO THIS***

I'll admit: when I opened the book for the first time, the second thought that went through my mind (after "How frigging cool is this?") was, "How the heck am I gonna read this?"

So, for those of you asking that same question, let me tell you how I went about it:

As cool as all the inserts are, trying to keep them from falling out of the book as you're reading is a pain, so take them out and use post-it notes to mark what page they came from, then put them in an envelope that you can easily access.

Now, J&E's notes are not entirely in chronological order. You can generally go by the color of the ink between them to tell what phase of their story you're at.

First, there's Eric's pencil notes to himself about the actual book. Then, the convo between J&E begins when Jen picks up Eric's book and sees his notes and begins commenting on them in the margins. He sees this and writes back. Those early messages are Jen: Blue Ink - Eric: Black Ink

At some point after they go through the book a first time, they go through again. This time Jen: Orange Ink - Eric: Green Ink.

Then a third time Jen: Purple Ink - Eric: Red Ink

Finally, a fourth time (which seems to be after the denouement, in which they retrospectively discuss what has transpired). These are less frequent, and both Jen and Eric are in Black Ink.

***Read each chapter of the main text of SoT, ignoring all of Jen & Eric's notes. Upon finishing each chapter, you're going to want to go back and read only the blue/black notes and any referenced inserts. Then, move on to the next chapter. After you finish the whole book, go back and read only the orange/green notes and referenced inserts. Then purple/red, then black/black.***

However you choose to approach it, you're in for a treat. Even after finishing it, I'm still going back and looking for anything I may have missed. The journey was fantastic and the the destination was, well you'll see.

If you can believe you're a part of it, you will absolutely love it.
By H. Parker Smith III
S. is one of the best books I’ve read. Period. But I believe I feel differently than the average reviewer because I made the conscious decision that I was going to “believe” before I started reading. You see, you can only enjoy this book if you go in accepting that you are not its first owner and that what you are reading was not intended for your eyes. The ability to become an active participant instead of a passive reader, I would imagine, is the difference between loving this book and hating it. I fall so far onto the “love” side of the spectrum that I simply cannot wait to read it again.

S. is really a story about 6 principal characters:

• S. – The main character in the novel "Ship of Theseus" who is suffering from amnesia. The novel follows S. as he desperately tries to figure out who he is and what his significance is to both the Ship of Theseus and the various ports at which it docks.

• V.M. Straka – an enigmatic author of the novel Ship of Theseus, the book which serves as stage to this mystery.

• The Translator (FXC) – a historian of Straka’s works who not only translates his novels into a variety of different languages but also pens commentary in the form of footnotes throughout Ship of Theseus.

• Eric – an exhausted theorist who believes the mystery of “Who is V.M. Straka” can be solved via subtext clues cleverly embedded throughout Ship of Theseus

• Jen – a student who stumbles upon Eric’s copy of Ship of Theseus and who’s penchant for researching the obscure and who's fresh perspective on the tale helps reveal that the initial question of “Who is V.M. Straka” is only the tip of a very, VERY large iceberg.

• YOU – You are the 3rd handler of this book. Jen and Eric have taken extensive notes in the margins and left dozens of pieces of ephemera tucked into the pages that serve as clues. You will use these clues to not only help solve the mystery of V.M. Straka, but also explore the mystery of why it is that you now have this book in your possession.

By reading S., you essentially become a character. In the same way that Eric and Jen attempt to solve a mystery about FXC and VM Straka, you must solve the mystery of Eric and Jen. Eric and Jen will often express frustrations over how they are not privy to the conversations and events that took place outside the pages of Ship of Theseus. This is not dissimilar to frustrations you, as the reader, will experience when Jen and Eric engage in meetings and ongoings outside of the book’s margins. It’s a brilliantly complex and maddeningly open-ended plot hurdle that you will regularly encounter throughout S.

The quantity of information that is thrown at you all at once is alarmingly difficult to comprehend. This is, of course, intentional. You may reach a page that has a postcard tucked into the binding, has 2 footnotes from FXC, has 11 margin notes from Eric and Jen (in 4 different ink colors), and, obviously, the continued Ship of Theseus novel. There is no good way to digest all of this, you simply have to read through it and absorb it as best you can before moving on. As you progress through the book, you pick up tricks for understanding when a note was written, who wrote it, and what the meaning is. Unfortunately, you’ll gain this perspective just in time to realize that – at some point – you’ll have to start the book all over again. However, while this is undeniably frustrating, it lends authenticity to the overarching plot of S., pulls you deeper into the story, and makes you feel like you really are solving a mystery. In this way, Eric and Jen become very real and you’ll feel like you can help them in the same way they are trying to help V.M. Straka.

S. is so much more than a book. It’s an experience. I continue to obsess over every detail, every clue, and every word contained in these pages. But, what’s funny about S., is that I wouldn’t recommend this book to most of my friends and family. Simply put, I just don’t think many people will “get it.” I don’t know how many people have the tolerance for ambiguity in the same way I do. I don’t know if other people will appreciate the complexity, the depth, or the details like I do. If The Da Vinci Code was the pizza of the literary world, then S. is the sushi. Most people probably won’t like it, but it will be passionately loved for by a few.

I could go on about this book for days. I would write more, but I have to go Google how to read a “rail-fence” cipher so I can continue solving this mystery :)

I really enjoy the concept of the book and JJ did a great job promoting the book with the trailers. I was hooked immediately.
By Ian Steiner
Even with that as the background, the book is a bit overwhelming when you try to tackle it. There are all the clue pieces, the dialogue between Eric and Jen and then the story itself. I was having a tough time trying to read the story and the banter while keeping it all together in my head. I decided to pull out the clue pieces(catalog the pages they are stuck between, it's important) and just read the story ignoring Jen and Eric. It's hard to do but I think it helps. The idea being I will read the story first, as Jen did, then go over it a second time reading Jen and Eric's banter at which point the clue pieces will be introduced. This will give me a greater depth of knowledge when trying to put the clues together.

I have not completed the story and don't want to drop any spoilers so this review is more of a guide book on how I thought the best way was to tackle the mystery. I'm sure other people will have different ideas and my plan may change as I progress so I will add updates as I move through the process.

If anyone reading this has a better ideas or thoughts to share please comment below, would love your feedback.

Ian

EDIT:
1) If you elect to read the book as I am(story first), DO NOT read Eric and Jen's banter. Clues are dropped that you will not want revealed.

Our Lady of Perpetual Vegan Awesomeness Does It Again.
By Dustin G. Rhodes
In truth, I never cooked before I became vegan, and Isa's first book -- the now classic Vegan with a Vengeance -- taught me practically everything I know about vegan cooking. Isa is a one-woman vegan empire and rightfully so: she's hilarious, her recipes are delicious and her cookbooks are informative and entertaining.

Isa's recipes are so great because they feature foods and flavors that are always appealing: bold, satisfying and crave-worthy. I enjoy superfancy food at superfancy restaurants on occasion, but I have no interest whatsoever in making that kind of food at home -- at least not very often. I want fairly simply food that bursts with flavor, but that's quick and easy to make. The genius in Isa's recipes is how completely approachable they are, regardless of cooking skill. This is food for Real Life.

Isa Does It is not a departure from her other cookbooks, except that this one is much, much prettier. The food photography is sumptuous.

For me, the entire sandwich section is a stand out (the chickpea "tuna" sandwiches are to die for); the curry, burgers and stir fries, too. Last week, like a bad vegan, I ate her rosemary chocolate chip cookies for breakfast (and lived to tell the tale). I love the bowls, which are complete meals unto themselves. I haven't made the Glam Chowder yet, but my mouth waters looking at that photo. Everyday Pad Thai? Yes, please!

This is an especially fantastic cookbook for the novice cook AND for the novice vegan: Isa Does It is FULL of instruction that makes vegan cooking seem accessible and fun -- which it is. This is a must-have for die-hard Isa fans like myself -- those who read her cookbooks like good prose. For me, Isa is the love-child of David Sedaris and Julia Child; her books inspire over-eating and laughter in almost equal measure.

To state the obvious: yes, you should buy this cookbook.

Beautiful! and Isa does it (again)!
By A fellow reader
First of all, this is one of the most beautiful cookbooks I have ever seen. It is just generally visually appealing.

I always appreciate Isa's cookbooks because they contain recipes that are good, accessible standard type recipes. The recipes, for the most part, contain ingredients you can get in almost any grocery store. The recipes aren't dependent on things like vegan cheese, vegan cream cheese, vegan sour cream, etc, etc. They are just good regular recipes that your brother, grandmother, curmudgeonly uncle and slightly odd neighbor would enjoy. If you think vegan means no fat/oil, no sugar, no soy, no gluten, etc and are offended by the sight of even 1 recipe with the above in them, then you might want to look elsewhere. On the other hand, there are plenty of lower fat, limited sugar, soy free and gluten free recipes. From glancing and the desserts, they are pretty standard desserts using things you would expect such as sugar and flour.

I have made about 15 recipes or so and they are all delicious. My top recommendations would be:
Harira with Eggplant & Chickpeas
Cheddary Broccoli Soup
Chicky Tuna Salad Sandwiches
Sunflower Mac
Coconut Chana Saag
Incan Smokey Stew
Roasted Butternut Alfredo
Sweet potato gnocchi with Seared Brussels Sprouts & Tarragon cream (time consuming but worth it)

Overall, just another good solid book. Highly recommended.

No more excuses. Just buy the freakin' book.
By Laura C.
When I got Veganomicon, I heard a lot of complaints about how complex it was. Being a cooking enthusiast, it was not a big deal. Isa Does It! resolves any 'complexity' issues. The recipes are easy, many can be done quickly, and "weirdo vegan ingredients" are kept to a minimum. If you can soak a cup of cashews, you got it made (and if you can't, well, then it's high time you did). It won't kill you to familiarize yourself with a slab of tofu, either. Anyway, within 1 week I probably logged 30 hours in the kitchen (yes, I am gainfully employed).

*Yakisoba - quick, easy and a new go-to. Tastes great the next day, too!
*Seitan & Broccoli with Pantry BBQ pulled together quickly and exceeded my taste bud expectations (I used packaged seitan, although I usually make my own).
*Beet Bistro Burger: Nothing makes me happier than finding a new use for beets, and the Bistro Beet burger was not only tasty - but pretty. Yes - aesthetics count.
*The Malai Kofta in Korma sauce is the last nail in the coffin for me in never going out to eat Indian again (and I used to 2-3x/week). Plus, she's considerate enough to ensure there is enough leftover sauce to slather on everything.
*Finally, the Glam Chowder is worth the price of the book alone. Really.

A word on Isa's baking prowess. With the exception that us highlanders living at altitude have to compensate the leavening, (143 million people on the planet live above sea level, but I digress), I can say unequivocally, that Isa's baking recipes give the most consistent end product of any recent vegan cookbook I've encountered. Banana marble loaf. Enuf said.

From the 'retired' graphic designer perspective, the book is beautiful. It is on matte paper, great color theme, and the fonts are whimsical and easy to read! (I'm lookin' at you, Enchanted Broccoli Forest!) Plus, I love her new 'do~

UPDATE: 12/2/2014: A bit over a year later and the love affair continues. Must tries:

* Mediterranean Overnight Scramble (my new breakfast go-to)
* Pad Thai - (Like Isa - if not for complete nutritional breakdown, I could eat this every night)
* Carrot Cake Pancakes (damn glad I'm not diabetic)
* Sticky Chicky Stir Fry ( the vegan's answer to Orange Chicken...supress the urge to reach for a cigarette after eating this...)
* Roasted Butternut Alfredo (can something really be this creamy & decadent tasting using only cashews & butternut squash?)
* Curried Peanut Sauce Bowl
...and the list just keeps growing. It would be safe to say that this is my favorite all-around cookbook.

Great, as Always!
By Zana Zira
Volume 14 continues where 13 left off, with the memories of Sebastian's first few months as Ciel's servant. It is heartwarming to see how the two of them grew and developed compared to their rocky start as master and servant, which is made all the more evident as the book continues. I will not give too many spoilers, but Ciel and Sebastian are placed in a situation that not only endangers Ciel and Lizzy, but for once even the life of Sebastian. It is a gripping read, as always, and will leave you craving more by the time you reach the end.

Very good
By Jude
~4-4.5/5

[More of my reviews are available on my blog, Geeky Reading, to which there's a link on my profile.]

The ship and zombie plot concludes in this volume. It’s very intense and titanic-y. The first chapter is a continuation of when Ciel and Sebastian first started their agreement, and it’s awesome. Then we get back to the present, and Sebastian is all intense, saving his master, and that’s awesome. It’s such a new side to him, since he’s usually so calm. And there’s a scene where Ciel commands something of him and he turns all dark.

Sebastian has never been my favorite character, although I’ve always liked him, but I love seeing his calm demeanor ruined. Like by getting flustered saving Ciel, or killing with vigor. Or, back during the Circus plot, when he was being seductive and suave. I want to see more of him, get inside his mind more. And it seems like Toboso is exploring his character more, and I'm enjoying it a lot.

Anyway, there’s battle and blood and death, fighting all over the place, Ciel coughing. Then things calm down, somewhat, for an Easter chapter. A little reprieve for Elizabeth to throw a party. Only, we get to see that she’s worried about Ciel, and about their relationship. And concerned and curious about what happened to him while he was gone (back before he showed up with Sebastian). It’s a very funny chapter, and I love seeing Ciel working hard to do something nice, to take care of, Elizabeth. I really want to see their relationship develop, to see him be honest and open with her, and her to become a bigger, closer part of his life. I’m assuming that’ll take a while, though.

Especially since the last chapter of the volume starts off with a new plotline. Ciel is going undercover at some private school. We haven’t learned much yet, but it’s obvious something is going on with the students, and the prefects of each dorm. That will be fun. Plus, Sebastian is going undercover as a teacher, so that’s sure to be interesting.

Good things ahead, and I’m excited!

Yay!

Otto books are for some reason really hard to find. One of my friend's kids loves Otto and refuses to sleep unless they read him an Otto book first, so this is what we got for him as a "I'm a big brother" gift and he loved it!
