Difficult for a true Twilight fan to swallow

Ok, I had to go buy it. I haven't gotten very far with it. As someone who has read Twilight probably 100 times (don't judge me), it was very VERY odd to read the exact same words, but with strange new names. Beaufort? Really? She couldn't have come up with a better name that started with a B than Beaufort? I was really thrown off by reading that Charlie bought the truck from Bonnie Black. Then they introduced all of the Cullens with swapped genders. My head started to hurt trying to match everyone up with who they should be, and I put it down. I hope I'll be able to try again. I loved the Twilight books when they came out, so I was interested in this book. Now I'm just not sure I can handle the swap. It would be easier if it wasn't written almost verbatim from Twilight. It feels like she did the quick and easy way out, editing the already-written Twilight just to make a quick buck. Dear Stephenie, I think you would have pleased your fans more by finishing Midnight Sun. This just feels cheap and quick.

First of all, like many of you, I loved the original series and have reread them several times. I was interested in this book, and I'm about a third of the way through - not sure I'm going to bother finishing. I've thought a bit about why this book isn't working for me. It's not the dialogue, the plot, the fact that I've read it before - it's just that I can't put myself into this story. Let me explain. I think a big part of the appeal of the Twilight series was a self-professed "ordinary" girl getting the gorgeous, unattainable guy who was totally into her and her alone - and having another gorgeous werewolf also in love with her. Since the readership of Twilight was predominantly female, the average reader was able to project herself onto the more or less blank canvas of Bella and put herself into the story as the ordinary girl who gets the extraordinary guy. Rob Pattinson and Taylor Lautner being cast as the two male leads didn't hurt, either.

Now we have a gorgeous female vampire in love with a totally ordinary guy and....yawn. Who needs more descriptions of gorgeous, perfect women? You can open up any fashion magazine or Hollywood tabloid and read about them. There is no way for the average Twilight reader to put herself into this story - especially since "Beau" is a totally unappealing character and "Edythe" is just making me picture Rob Pattinson in drag.

I don't know why I'm so annoyed by this book - hey, we're not talking about a literary work like "Pride and Prejudice" here, but for the love of all that is holy (as Meyer herself likes to say), could we just have "Midnight Sun" finished before we are all too old to care about this series anymore?

Poetry, Death and Psychosis!!!

Waugh is my favourite author in the world and no one says it better than him. The loved one is an irreverant, cheeky, completely accurate look at the business of commercializing death in Hollywood. From beginning to end this book will entertain you! Watch the 1965 movie if you can find it - the cast is stellar Rod Steiger, Roddy McDowell, Liberace, John Guilgud - the best thing about a Waugh movies is that his writing style is so good that it is inimicable - the movies follow the books word for word!

Elegant black humour

I first read this when I was fifteen (I'd just seen a TV programme entitled The American Way of Death and this book seemed to be an appropriate next step). As other reviewers have noted, this is a darkly humorous book with some unforgettable characters. In my opinion this book is as compelling and amusing as Decline and Fall and superior to his other comic works including Vile Bodies and Black Mischief.
It is somewhat sepulchral in places and not everyone may find it that entertaining. But for those who like their satire tinged with the macabre, especially if they like Waugh's brand of dry humour, this is a masterpiece. Strongly recommended.

Biting, Somewhat Cruel Satire

(Post-Edit: This review refers to the audiobook version, which is competently read in a plummy British accent. I don't know why it is showing up in the paperback format.) This is more of a novella than a novel, and the character development is somewhat skimpy because of that. It's a black comedy, expertly written in Waugh's classically brilliant prose, that skewers British expats, Hollywood, the American funeral industry, and the Forest Lawn "celebrity cemetery" in Los Angeles--or at least, how they appeared when Waugh visited Hollywood sometime in the late Forties. It helps to be a little bit familiar with the targets of the satire--such as the huckster-rish radio evangelist of the 30s, Aimee Semple McPherson, and her devoted followers. Sadly, many people nowadays are so culturally uneducated that they might need to Google many of the references, which IMHO, are not all that complicated or obscure from my standpoint. The main character is a British expat down on his luck named Dennis Barlow, who is forced to take a job as a manager of a lowly pet cemetery--a job which he has to hide from his fellow expats, who consider the position to be beneath his dignity as a representative of the fading but still extant British Empire. His rescue from his penury may come in the form of a romance with a woman who works as a cosmetologist at the much tonier, nearby "human cemetery," which is the Forest Lawn stand-in called "Whispering Glades." Hilarity (and tragedy) both ensue as Dennis must compete for his intended's hand with Whispering Glades' charmless chief embalmer, Mr. JoyBoy.

PLOT TWIST (no spoilers)

Holy crap, I remember it was around 2 in the morning when I read this volume. I was staying over at my aunt and uncle's apartment and I was having trouble sleeping, so I pulled out my manga and read it. THE ENTIRE THING IN ONE SITTING. This volume is incredible, the pacing is flawless and Break is so cool! It is really amazing.

And then...I turned those last few pages...

Wow, I definitely did not see that coming.

The storyline was getting a wee bit confusing for me. But this volume cleared up some questions about why Oz date referred to him a a "thing" in an early vlolume. Then added the mystery to if Oz is dead and what becomes of Gilbert. I'm looking forward to the next volume.

After reading the novel I was just so curious about the graphic novel version that I had to buy it which was interesting for all of about 5 mins. The artwork and detail are impressive but the novel conveys the story much better as well as infusing the story with the sinister quality that just makes it so fun!

After all this comic is pretty cool. It leaves out some important details but after all th art is cool and they did a pretty good job. Just a tip for further readers is that it helps a lot if you read the book book before this because it helps you understand it more.

the original book is so amazing - but I felt I lost so much with the graphic novel. no pictures really, and the severity of the situation, the character development, and the writing is all missing. seems almost like a plot sketch, instead of the book I love so much

I'm a college guy in engineering who loves the show very dearly, I've written extensive reviews of the the other MLP:FIM books on Amazon.com written by G.M. Berrow.

[Rarity Fanboy Rant: Optional Read! XD]
Besides Twilight Sparkle, Rarity is by far my most favorite character in the whole cast, it was tough choice but she made it to second place, fabulously!
So this review maybe a little biased, but as a Rarity-fanboy she deserves all the praise and adoration! Why?
Simple! She is the one that caught me by surprise the most[probably all of us XD] as a character who I thought should have been the most cliched out of the whole group turned out to be the well done female cartoon characters I ever seen in a kids show!
I love her so much that I wouldn't be ashamed in saying I want this fictional character to do well in her fictional life. I'll cry of happiness if we ever get to see Rarity's future. XD
We all know Rarity as the fashionista of the mane 6, she's the pony to call when you have a fashion emergency, a shoulder to cry on, or a heart to heart talk with. :)
Rarity is a whole LOTTA pony, and she is the very definition of a lady!
[Rarity Fanboy Rant: Over]

Straight to the point:
Rarity, our undeniable marshmallow pony girl, is waiting to see if she got accepted to House of Outrageous and Opulent Fashion (H.O.O.F).
She joined the program to become a mentor to an up and incoming fashion designer of the fashion world. [Somepony needs to teach the upstarts to do fashion right! XD]
After a few pages of drama with SweetieBelle, Rarity gets her letter through the mail from a certain gray mailpony who's a little clumsy [derpihooves. :D] which says she got accepted!
She invites all her friends [our pony girls] to come with her to the train station and meet her new student.
They would meet Charity Sweetmint, Rarity's student who would soon become eerily too close to being the same as Rarity.
Becoming so like her in fact that Spike in front of the train station would stop dead in his track at her uncanny beauty remblance to Rarity [Rarity jealous because of Spike's attention on another pony, I need this as an episode now! XD].
So it turns out that aside from wanting to try to be a mentor, Rarity actually also really needed extra help around her boutique but her ego and pride hindered her from asking.
Rarity ends up using Charity for chores around the boutique instead of actually teaching her the ropes of becoming a fashion designer.
Charity takes all that Rarity says to heart and easily deems that "becoming her mentor" would be the only way to make it as a big shot in fashion.
Rarity fixes this by showing Charity her strengths by being Charity mane [wig, Rarity would never dye her mane all natural beauty! XD] and all! and that while she was a bit flattered [seriously an understatement] she should copy her to be a good fashion designer.
Rarity and Charity work on a design line for the H.O.O.F competition and finally Rarity learned that it is not too easy to be a mentor after all.
Rarity though makes it clear in the end that Spike is hers! [Oh Rarity! ;)]

The whole scene:
"Hey!" Charity turned to Spike and whispered, "Rarity thinks I have potential, Spike-Wikey!"
"Ahem." Rarity cleared her throat.
"Darling?"
Charity stopped. "Yes?"
"Let's get one thing straight. That's my Spikey-Wikey. Capiche?"

// I think for this book. I'll leave the brief summary out. Get the book, it's worth the 5 bucks and then some. I don't think a brief summary will do Rarity justice it needs to be read front to back! XD //

Brohoof /) GM Berrow. I enjoyed this book so much! :D If you love Rarity's dialogue and antics from the show this book won't disappoint.

Overall:

Rarity is by far one of the most well defined characters in the show but just for kicks lets just say how well defined. :) She as Twilight is dedicated to her work as a fashion designer, she as Applejack is as hardworking, she as Rainbow Dash is as quick in making dresses, she as Pinkie Pie could make you smile, and finally she could be as cute as button like Fluttershy.
Well, alright she does have her flaws. I would say her three main flaws are as follows:

1) She is too fashion centric [comes with the territory] but she often puts fashion over everything.
2) She can be too self-centered a times.
3) She like AJ pushes herself too much.

In this story, we see Rarity get humbled by the fact that she finally realizes that one it ain't easy to be mentor and two she shouldn't be too proud to ask for help when she needs help around the boutique.
It's a rather refreshing revelation for her and one I hope she takes to heart, but knowing Rare she'll be too caught up in her fabulosity. Oh Rarity. :3

Wonderful characterizations

The story here is quite frankly, secondary. What a curious thing to say about a book, but it certainly fits with "Rarity and the Curious Case of Charity". Rarity is the fashionista pony, she's an Equestria famous dress designer, and an eager young student is sent to her Ponyville residence for her to apprentice in the ways of making Rarity quality dresses. The young starry eyed pony gets caught up in hero worship and takes her idolizing to damaging levels, culminating in a rather typical... ahh... "fashion". It's pretty standard stuff. Animate it and slap a few songs in there, and you would have a decent filler episode of "Friendship is Magic".

HOWEVER the story is not the reason to read this. If you love the ponies, and want more time with them while waiting for the next season of MLP:FiM to air, then this book will do the trick, at least for the span of nearly an hour. The characters are written brilliantly. Every mane toss, conversation, and situation sticks completely true to the characters. Their banter is so on point that you can visualize them talking and hear their voices in your head. There is no wonder why the kids enjoy this pony book series so much, reading one is like hanging out with your favorite four hoofed friends for awhile, and that's a very cool thing.

The story is average, but has a good message, and the book is full of that ponyfied flavor. Little fans of MLP will enjoy this, and you can feel about them reading it. Older MLP fans might want to take a look too, it's perfect light fluff to read while in a waiting room. Adults do a lot of waiting, why not wait with some pony friends?

one of the best of the series so far

After being a little disappointed in last book in this series my faith was quickly renewed here for the series. Not only does Twilight get referred to as Princess in this book helping to identity that she an alicorn not a unicorn in the story but there are many references to episodes such like Twilight Time, Fill Vinilli and other season for episode event. Not to mention Pinkie wish for Discord to bring back Chocolate Rain refering to Return to Harmony. The story deals with Rarity becoming mentor to fashion student Charity whose not only share almost identical names but also almost identical cutie marks allowing the unicorn to pass as Rarity with a mane dye job and forcing Rarity to step up and do something about Charity wishes to be like Rarity too far.

Decent urban fantasy and a solid start to a new world

I got this book to review through NetGalley, so thanks to NetGalley and Orbit for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. Jaye Wells also writes the Sabina Kane urban fantasy series, which I have been wanting to read but haven’t had the chance to read. Dirty Magic is the first book in a new series by Wells set in a new world. It was a decent start to a new urban fantasy. I wasn’t enthralled with the characters, but as the story progressed I got more and more interested. I definitely think this has potential to become a great urban fantasy series.

Kate Prospero is on her standard nightly rounds in the city of Babylon when she runs across a woman being mauled by a werewolf-like creature. She shoots him in self-defense...but doing so draws the attention of the MEA (Magic Enforcement Agency). Suddenly Kate finds herself deeply involved in a case with the MEA that involves a deadly new dirty potion that is plaguing the Cauldron (rundown part of Babylon). To further complicate things Kate’s rich ex-boyfriend (John Volos) is one of the prime suspects.

This was a decent urban fantasy. I thought the setting was interesting, but never really was all that engaged with the main heroine. Things did get more interesting towards the end of the book, as our heroine started to get more involved in using her Adept magic. Up to that point though, this book was mostly a police procedural with some supernatural potion stuff thrown in.

Kate is a cop who has a sordid history as an Adept who made dirty potions for the Cauldron underground. She worked hard to free herself from the clutches of her mobster-like family. She is eager to help out the MEA, it will be a promotion for her and help her to really make a difference in stamping out dirty magic. However Kate’s life is a bit complicated. Because of both of her parents being dead, she is left to raise her teenage brother herself. Also as things progress she finds out that her ex-boyfriend from her Dirty Magic days is now an influential and rich man in the Babylon political scene...and he is the prime suspect in the creation of a new dirty potion that is causing havoc on the streets.

I didn’t really like Kate all that much. She is very much a cop running from a dirty past. She does a lot of stupid things. She doesn’t handle her brother Danny well at all, she has a spot of blind fear and hatred where magic is concerned, and she seems a bit too willing to forgive the man that she used to date. She makes a lot of the same mistakes over and over again throughout the book. She does get a bit more interesting as she starts to reveal more of her Adept magic side, but this doesn’t happen into much further into the book.

Kate’s two potential love interests are, of course John, and her MEA partner Morales. John has the whole “slightly evil rich guy but occasionally sensitive and caring guy” thing going on. I don’t like him and I have read about too many other characters like him in urban fantasies. Morales just comes off as a bit of a sex fiend, he is constantly trying to get Kate to have casual sexual relations with him.

Even though I didn’t like Kate or either of her love interests, there are some interesting characters in here. Kate’s brother Danny is an interesting kid and I liked reading about him. Mez is the MEA’s resident magic wizard and he’s pretty unique and awesome. Kate also has an informant that is half baby, half creepy lady named Little Man (LM) that is crazy creepy but also really intriguing.

The surroundings are gritty and this is definitely dark urban fantasy. Babylon is a city plagued by additive dirty magic potions and the addicts that are desperate for them. The seedier parts of the city are run by Clans of Adepts. We have yet to meet all of these Clans.

I guess part of my problem with this book is that it is mainly a police procedural type of story, the magic is there but not incredibly prevalent until later on in the book. After Kate starts getting more involved with the magic, things get more interesting but this doesn’t happen until pretty late in the book.

Overall this was an okay start to a new series, it was easy to read and decently written. I just wasn't all that drawn into the story or the world. I also didn’t like the characters all that much. I think it has potential but right now I am on the fence as to whether or not I will read the next book in the series.

Didn't fall for the magic

I guess that sums up how I feel after finishing this book. The magic wasn't real enough or believable enough to convince me. I got that it was addictive. I got that it had a high profit margin and people were making money off it. the magic in this book was far more understandable as drugs than magic. I couldn't feel magic at all, I just felt the tawdry drug world and all that it encompasses.

I felt her character was true to who she was. I liked her and I liked the signs of someone still struggling to figure it out every day and just trying to do the right thing. She was faced with a lot of hard choices and put in a bunch of rough spots. She stayed true to who she was throughout. That's not to say I always liked her decisions but I never doubted her or felt she was wishy washy.

The sign of a really strong book for me was whether I had to keep churning thru it to find out how it ends. This one didn't meet that Mark for me. I stopped half way thru and honestly didn't care if I finished it or not. After finally getting back and completing it, I find I still don't care how it turned out.

I blew through these eight chapters in one sitting. The author does an excellent job of world building and sets the tone for action and fear in the first chapter. Kate Prospero is a magical adept who walked away from the most powerful coven in her city to become a beat cop and raise her brother, now 16. She faces prejudices and passovers for promotion due to who she is and she's beginning to get frustrated. Suddenly, a powerful new potion shows up on the streets that makes the user crave human flesh and blood and renders them immune to anti-magic weapons. Kate is finally chosen to assist the federal agents in finding out where the potion is coming from and who's behind the money. It's her break, if she doesn't kill the others on the team.....and she may have to face some old and deadly lovers and enemies to get answers.
I cannot wait to get the rest of this book.
