Necessary but Not Definitive for the Die Hard Santana Fan...

I have all the Santana albums, seen him now 8 times in concert including the 2004, 2006 and 2011 concerts in Montreux which were pretty much unique formats e.g. Invitation to Illumination etc. I also read the original biography (Soul Sacrifice) and Deborah Santana's book (Space Between the Stars), and probably the best of them all a

I think this book is informative, but doesn't necessarily give you the most comprehensive perspective on who Carlos actually is as a person. If you're interested in what inspires him and motivates his music (with especially perpetual details throughout about John Coltrane and Miles Davis), this book is of course the definitive source.

But if you really want the most objective perspective of his life and how others perceived his actions, or some other points of view on how he managed the band and his career, then I'd suggest Voice of Latin Rock which to me as a hard core Santana fan gives some incredibly detailed information by interviewing former band mates and roadies of the band (Santana actually wrote the foreword for the book).

Look, any die hard Santana fan has been waiting years for this autobiography, so for that sake you might as well buy and enjoy it, but any die hard fan will then again want more information that within its pages, and for that required reading would be the aforementioned titles above.

Universal Tone, Universal Gift

There are 3 key take-aways from this book from my perspective: 1) 'The Story': Carlos tells the story of his life in a way that brings all readers to a common understanding of how his career developed. I found the timelines and anecdotes highly illustrative and 'visual.' As a fan of 43 years I am no longer missing pieces of the story. Some gaps were filled in nicely for me; 2) 'The Influences': Carlos dedicates a large portion of his autobiography to his influences - be they musical (Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bob Marley, Gabor Szabo, etc.), professional (Bill Graham, Clive Davis, etc.), or personal (friends, family). There is a level of selflessness in this as many rock stars would shine the light solely on themselves. Carlos acknowledges that who he is today was largely influenced by others; 3) 'His spirituality': This is the differentiator. One can see the connection between the music and his divinity. There's a bigger purpose to what he does on stage and that story needed to be told. To know his music brings joy; to understand his spirituality brings enlightenment. I've seen Carlos 40 times in concert and am ready for #41 to be something special now that I've read The Universal Tone. And Carlos, there are congas in heaven.....

So good that I didn't want it to end!

I have been waiting on this one for a long time. I finished it in a week. I read it slowly because it was so good that I didn't want it to end. This is Carlos Santana's autobiography, and it goes into great depth about his life, his music, and his spiritual convictions. He discusses his musical influences and his musical philosophy in tremendous detail. This is a thick book, but it's very readable and full of profound wisdom and wonderful insights.

Carlos Santana bares it all here. But he writes about his life with a raw honesty that is infused with dignity and grace. His writing truly reflects his music: passionate, soulful, gut wrenching, and ultimately transcendent and replete with hope. This is an incredibly inspirational book.

Musicians will not be disappointed. Carlos discusses the finer points of his music: his influences, his band members throughout the decades, his instruments and equipment, his recording history, his touring, and his process of creating. And yet he delves into all of these details without losing the attention of readers who may not be musicians.

I know there will be some people who don't want to read about Santana's spirituality and social convictions. They'll say: "Just talk about the music. Just play and don't preach." Well, I might not agree with all of Santana's views on spirituality and religion, but I know that it is impossible to separate his music from his spirituality. If you listen to Santana and you aren't drawn to a higher consciousness (however you wish to define that "higher consciousness"), then you must not be listening.

Santana may not be a saint (I'll let God decide that), but his story contains some wonderful lessons for us all. Carlos Santana is a man who could have easily given into darkness and despair; but he had the courage to choose life, light, and love instead. And his victorious spirit resonates in his writing as much as it does in his music.

This book is definitely one of the top 5 books that I've ever read, and I've read a lot. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I went out today and bought the audio book so I could listen to it in Santana's own voice.

A gritty dark fantasy

A Dance of Cloaks is the fourth book I've read by David Dalglish. While I liked his other books a lot, I felt with them that there was something missing to make them 5-star books. That's not the case with A Dance of Cloaks. In this book, he's come into his own and A Dance of Cloaks is an exciting read. I've always said that Dalglish writes some of the best fight scenes I've ever read, and that doesn't change in this book. Added to the mix is plenty of intrigue and a large cast of characters, including some old favorites. The theme of redemption is still laced throughout the book.

If you've read and liked Dalglish's Half-Orc series, you've really got to read this - you'll learn a good bit about the politics of the world and also find out how Haern got his start as well as the Eschatons. A Dance of Cloaks stands fully on its own, though -- don't worry if you haven't read Dalglish's other books; you don't need to in order to dive right in. If you enjoy fantasy, I can't recommend this book enough.

A Wild Ride Through a Dark World

In A Dance of Cloaks David Dalglish has created a dark world where life is easily lost and swords and daggers rule. I don't normally read fantasy, but decided to broaden my horizons with this book. I'm glad I did. I don't want to post any spoilers, so I'll simply say the main plot was between a father and son. Thren Felhorn would stop at nothing to bend his son to his will and make him into a heartless assassin and the next ruler of the thieves guilds. Sub-plots involved a variety of other characters vying for money or power. There are also two very different religions struggling to win the people to their respective beliefs.

The action scenes--and there are many--are so well-written that I could easily imagine myself observing as if from a nearby vantage point. But not too nearby--the vivid battle and torture descriptions are not for the squeamish.

The main characters are portrayed with depth and feeling and each is given a story that we follow throughout the book. I especially liked that the women were strong characters and some of them could fight as well as or better than the men.

All the action and conflict lead to a climactic event when Thren Felhorn, ruler of the thieves, attempts to wipe out the opposition and finally take control of everything. Some of the characters live and some die violently, but loose ends are tied up in a dramatic battle that overtakes the city.

Highly recommended.

Lackluster and violent

So... some background. I'd been away from fantasy for awhile, until I picked up Name of the Wind. It was fantastic, and I devoured it. Then I picked up Lies of Locke Lamora, and I was pretty unimpressed by the first few chapters, but then it grew on me and I loved it. I read its sequel Red Seas under Red Skies next, and loved it just about as much.

When I picked up Dance of Cloaks, I felt the same way about it at first as I did about Lies of Locke Lamora, and I really hoped it would grow on me too. Unfortunately it just never really rang true with me. The plot is difficult to follow for the first few chapters, since every couple of pages tends to introduce a new character. These characters tend to have a great deal of similarity... they're all more or less violent, vengeful, and skilled at some form of combat. Once you have the characters and plotlines sorted out, it's difficult to sympathize with any of them, even (what I believe to be) the main character. The ending was sudden, and I felt like very little had actually been accomplished.

On the positive side, it's not a mentally difficult read. The world and social structure it creates are both fascinating and detailed. It also doesn't have the pretentiousness of a great many of the books that I've read. I genuinely believe that there's a lot of potential here, but it just didn't quite hit the right note for me.

In short, is it a match for Name of the Wind or Lies of Locke Lamora? Not quite, in my mind. Is it better than most similar books out there? Yes indeed.

The perfect heart wrenching love story.

This book was absolutely amazing. Its a quick read and sums up what it feels like to first fall in love. The love story is so beautiful and after I finished the book I re-read it a second time. You can't help but fall in love with the characters. I recommend this book to anyone who loves romantic comedy books.

FIRST LOVE by James Patterson and Emily Raymond is an adventurous love story with two lovable teenagers. The story reads more like a Nicholas Sparks romantic novel than from the pen of hard-nosed mystery writer, James Patterson.
Alexandra Moore—Axi—and Oscar James Robinson meet in the ward of a cancer hospital where they both are recuperating from daily doses of chemo. Axi has recently lost her little sister, Carol Ann, from the dreaded disease. Axi’s mother, unable to cope, flees the family never to be heard from again. The father drowns his sorrows with nightly doses of alcohol.
Seeking to escape from it all, Axi cooks up a detailed cross-America road trip. Knowing she can’t pull it off by herself, she persuades the love of her life, Robinson, the handsomest boy in the high school to partner with in her adventure. From the start, the odyssey does not go as planned.
Axi and Robinson—although only sixteen—seem more like young adults in coping with the many roadblocks they encounter along their wondrous journey.
First Love is cleverly written, it’s funny even in the midst of pain and heartbreak. The book is not a page-turner but a story you want to return to first thing every morning.
It would be a sin not to turn this heartfelt novel into a movie.

"you might want to keep some tissues close by... and some ice cream"

Since my internet has been out for a few days I took the privilege in reading this book at my own, slow, enjoyable pace. Because that is what this book deserves, to be read slowly and absorbed like a sponge. It wasn't the easiest thing in the world to do, especially when all I wanted to do was read it all in one instant so I could see what would happen next without having to wait any. First Love is a contemporary young adult romance that ties a great deal into the authors own past. Knowing that his past had a great deal to do with this particular story being written is one of the main reasons I wanted to read this book, and agreed to do so for the publisher, free, in exchange for my honest review of it. Not only that but I have always wanted to try James Patterson's work but have never been able to get my hands on one of his books.

One thing that everyone should remember when picking up this book is the fact that it ties into the authors past. If you don't skip ahead of the introduction note from Patterson in the beginning of this book you will get a big clue as to what will happen some time during this story of his. Which is why I went from being totally pissed about one of the characters surprising us with the news of having cancer to total sadness and acceptance. You can't read his introduction letter about how his first love had had cancer and then expect a story that is inspired by that love story to not have a cancer twist in it. If you do then you are the one setting yourself up for a big disappointment, not the author. As one of the main characters in First Love says, you can't have a good story with just the good parts. It all has to be in there, the good and the bad, or else it's not a real story. And while I am one of those who refuse to read anything remotely sad and that has characters getting extremely sick and possibly dying I will be adding this book onto my bookshelf to re-read later. Simply because it is too amazing not to. Even with all the bad mixed in.

Romantic, funny, heartbreaking. First Love is a love story for the ages. One that I myself can sadly relate to in some ways. I will have to say that I believe Mr. Patterson has given Mr. Sparks a run for his money and seriously hope that this will be turned into a movie someday. Be warned though, you might want to keep some tissues close by... and some ice cream.

Incisive look into a distorted world.

This is a good novel -- NOT brilliant as sometimes described. It's a good character study of the kind of all-encompassing obsession and distortion in an ordinary family where one memory has an extraordinary gift. It could well influence the way you watch the Olympic gymnastics in the future.
The so-called "plot twists" were, for me, telegraphed almost from the beginning. But that's not really the point of the novel. It's incorrect to see it as a mystery or a page turner. I actually wish that the author had simply focused on the story of the family and the one gifted child, and what that does to a family. The type of distortions and dangers described here, I get the feeling, are much more common in the "real world" than we might suspect. Although one of the points of this novel is that there's very little "real world" involved in world class gymnastics (and I would add, any other world where gifted children live their whole lives in competition with others like themselves.)

So wish it were better

How I wish Megan Abbott could write another novel like her class DARE ME. Although her writing is so captivating, the story was unbelievable. There was no way this young gymast could find the time to do what happens in the novel. No one is really that interesting and the moms are all bitcches. Abbott needs to slow down and write a novel worthy of her great talents.

Not Sure What the Uproar's About

Hmmm. A great review in the NYTimes made me get this book, though it isn't my usual type. And there was some good writing. The promise of an intriguing plot amidst the backdrop of high stakes gymnastics. And yet there's so amateurish about it, overblown language ("obscurely primitive" to describe a character's expression? "Pink" used way too often to describe young gymnasts. Way too many "queasy" moments...) sooooo much gratuitous drinking and old married hot sex with a husband who, it we are constantly reminded, didn't really WANT the star gymnast daughter from the get-go.. But mostly it was the main character, Katie, who did me in: caught up in the drama around competitive gymnastics, and yet snobbish toward the "booster" moms. A blind ditzy fool about her "handsome" husband, who just seemed like a manipulative Svengali dad to me. I get that the younger sibling might be ignored in the face of the sister's stardom, but really Katie's constant abandonment of him--it just made me NOT CARE what happened to this woman. And everyone, even the 7 yr olds, even the so called happily married mid lifers--gaga over the ripple-ab'ed 20 year old. Ew. It all felt too shallow and boring to be engaging. Probably the last thriller I'll read for a while (though really, all great books are thrillers, I'll stay clear of those written expressly to supposedly, uh, keep us guessing).

This series was just fantastic. The first one left me wanting more, the second one had an ending that confused me and made me want to read the third book to find out what the hell was going on. And as for the third book..... WOW!!!! TALK ABOUT A CLIFFHANGER!!! Needless to say, this was an amazing series for any age group and gender.

I was a little worried about reading young adult books as an adult, I thought they might feel a little juvenile to me but this was not the case for these books. They kept me interested and looking forward to the next book. I recommend them to all ages.

This is one of my favorite manga and I love it.
I can not stop reading this funny manga. The artwork is great and very well draw. Story is good too and so do the characters of this manga. If you like moe characters and are for a laugh to clam yourself up, this is the manga for you. (I bought 7 manga of this series so I will just going to copy and past all of this review).

A Great Commentary Of The Legend; A Shallow Treatise Of The Man

Micheal Jordan:The Life is an average biographical work of a sports icon whose career was larger than the game of basketball, and any other sports figure in the history of sports. Roland Lazenby's account of our beloved MJ fails to deliver anything new or exciting, and the book comes off as just another familiar sports column. Sure, he covers much of MJ's basketball career, but he clearly steers past major obstacles-positive and negative-in MJ's life, with only scant details, i.e., Operation Push's Nike Boycot, and his refusal to endorse African American Harvey Gantt in the North Carolina Senate race against Jesse Helms because "Republicans buy shoes too." How did these decisions impact MJ, family and friends, African-American teammates, and the African-American community?

MJ's family life is only remotely mentioned, many marital infidelities are oddly omitted, inplying that his affairs surfaced toward the end and after his basketball career. How did all this impact his wife and family? Also, Lazenby writes that MJ was a proud father, but fails to give any documentation to his Airness's fatherhood experiences; how his legend impacted his boy's (Marcus and Jeffrey) basketball careers, and how his failures affected all his children's (3 total, at the time) childhood experiences. Lastly, the book ends rather abruptly, leaving almost a blank concerning future plans of MJ's Charolette Hornets, his children's successes-life journey, and his new life with current wife Yvette Prieto. It would have been interesting story concerning MJ and Yvette Prieto's first meeting, and how she ultimately won MJ's heart. And what of MJ's estranged relationhip with his mother and siblings? All of these questions are strangely ignored as the book comes to a close.

Did I enjoy reading Micheal Jordan:The Life? Sure, any book written about Micheal Jordan will always be facinating because it's written from a different perspective. However, I don't view Lazenby's Micheal Jordan:The Life as anything definitive, one could simply read former biographys on MJ and recieve the same information. As another mentioned, Lazenby's writing wasn't top notch either, personally, I felt at times he lingured too long on miniscule details and ranting which often detracted from the story. This book is all about MJ's superior drive as a dominate competitor; where did Lazenby dismantle MJ's legend and present him in raw human form? However, in spite of Lazenby's failure to give us a vunerable MJ, I believe that Lazenby's ability as a sportswriter fit exceptionally well, especially when describing with sports commentator finesse MJ's amazing on court prowess, and the Bulls incredible run to six championships.

Personally, I believe that most have rated Lazenby's Micheal Jordan:The Life with 5 stars out of pure loyalty to MJ. Like millions blessed to witness the Jordan era, I'm still enamored with a man who once defied gravity, multiple obstacles, and willed himself and his teammates to absolute greatness. However, it isn't Air Jordan's spectacular legacy up for critique, MJ's career is unprecedented, but rather this particular compliation which is poorly written and worth only 3 stars. Perhaps, Lazenby, in the years to come will have an oportunity to improve upon 'The Life' with a much needed reissue: Micheal Jordan: (Inside) The Life, and he will have produced an original and definitive volume on 'The Life' of Micheal Jordan indeed.

In his resplendent biography of Michael Jordan, veteran sportswriter Roland Lazenby carefully chronicles the Hall of Famer's journey from his humble beginnings in Teachey, North Carolina, to his startling transformation to "His Airness."

"Personality-wise, he's a study," said former Chicago Bulls assistant coach Tex Winter of the six-time NBA champion. Lazenby offers nuanced insights into the basketball phenom's character through soulful and, at times, wistful family narratives. To understand the full force of MJ's wondrous life, Lazenby opens with the poignant story of Dawson Jordan. Born at the turn of the 20th century in a shotgun shack on the banks of North Carolina's Coastal plain, Michael's great-grandfather was a looming authority figure who possessed immense physical strength. In his youth, Dawson engaged in dangerous forestry, taking down trees, then bundling and floating the logs downriver to Wilmington's shipyards. In his lifetime, he was a lumber mill worker, logger, sharecropper, moonshiner, hunt club cook and determined survivor.

Lazenby portrays James and Deloris Jordan as thoroughly devoted parents, preparing their five children to become citizens of the world. "The greatest impact of their parenting came in the constant shaping of the children's attitudes," Lazenby writes, "they preached a constant refrain: Work hard. Achieve. Set goals. Think ahead. Don't be denied. Be considerate. Don't dwell on race."

Jordan's ability to listen was among his most impressive attributes, and his relationship with his mother made him receptive to coaching. Lanzenby notes that Jordan would come to call Dean Smith his second father and found Chapel Hill a safe harbor largely because of the family atmosphere that the Tar Heels coach built.

There are many tender episodes of familial love sprinkled throughout the book, including father-and-son basketball trips and backyard baseball games. But Lazenby also sheds light on the myth of Jordan's perfect upbringing, such as a home plagued with marital discord, money problems and allegations of abuse.

Daily heated one-on-one games with his stronger, older brother, Larry, resulted in constant thumpings. These physical backyard battles informed MJ's approach to the game both as an amateur and as a professional. Whether donning the uniform for Laney High School's Buccaneers, North Carolina's Tar Heels or the Chicago Bulls, Jordan's m.o. was to seek out the best player and try to dismantle them. Lazenby says, "Each opponent loomed as a Larry to be conquered."

Comprehensive!

The content itself is great. This issue here is how much you want to read about Jordan's ancestors and early life. I think some of the negative reviews I've read have overstated it, though. By about 15% into the book, you're already dealing with Jordan's high school (varsity) playing, and his recruitment to UNC. From there, the remaining 80-85% is lots of new tidbits about the life you already know: college, the NBA, and post-pro life.

If you're really looking to jump into an inside look at the parts of Jordan's life that you're already somewhat familiar with, skip the first 10-15%. That said, slogging through the early stuff makes the later stuff feel more satisfying.
