Part memoir, part history lesson, part discourse on how to make a public health project work using business standards, the story of Ruxin's life in Rwanda is riveting and inspirational. Although the author denies that the book is "about genocide," it is indeed imbued with the stories of the "the unspeakably dark times" in this African country's history. When Ruxin, a Fulbright scholar and public health activist, and his wife arrived in Rwanda in 2005, his mission was to create health facilities that worked, addressing the problems of AIDS, malaria, TB, and widespread malnourishment. The newlywed Manhattan couple said "a huge good-bye to everything they knew," procuring one-way airfare and a home directly across from the infamous Hotel Rwanda. In time, Ruxin (now on the faculty at Columbia University) received approval from the Rwandan government to pursue his Millennium Village Project. The bad news was that the area they ended up in was Mayange, a five-village cluster of dust and despair, lacking in any sense of community. The couple soon opened a restaurant called Heaven. Ruxin recounts how he and a top-notch team of health experts, organizers, agronomists, and others turned Mayange into a productive model that was eventually replicated in other locations. He also details the parallel development of a restaurant called Heaven, which was the brainchild of his wife, Alissa, who is also trained in public health. Good story well told, spoiled by pontificating

A Thousand Hills to Heaven is definitely a mixed bag. Mr. Ruxin is a good storyteller, and he has a good story to tell. If he would have left it at that and not made judgments about development in general, the book would have been much more entertaining, meaningful, and easy to stomach. I live and work in Kigali, and have devoted my life to development work: while Josh's unique experience in Rwanda makes a good story, it is a single unique experience, from which it's impossible to make preachy pronouncements about development in general.

He writes in a breezy style that's not too serious, but still handles the most serious of subjects (the genocide) in a meaningful way. While telling the story of his and his wife's development work and building the restaurant, he also tells the story of post-genocide Rwanda, an amazing story of healing, growth, and good governance. His story is full of likable, if one-dimensional, characters, His descriptions of rural Rwanda and metropolitan Kigali are spot-on, and create a rich tapestry on which to weave his family story. In the end you're very happy for Josh and his wife for what they've been able to accomplish, in the districts, and at Heaven, the restaurant. (Speaking of which, I've eaten at Heaven and while there are now many good restaurants in Kigali, Heaven must be in the top 10.)

Ruxin's development story is unique: his rich and rock-star friends give him unlimited funds with no strings attached, and he spends it how he likes, on the programs that suit him. Of course this is a success story. And it's a success to be celebrated. Sadly, Ruxin can't stop there, but must pontificate and denigrate the vast majority of development workers that do not have his freedom. Day-in-day-out workers who must account to governments for their investments are cast as corrupt money wasters for "writing reports." While Bono doesn't care where the money went, US congress does, and wants a record of it. All this could have been avoided by not using his enviable position as a hill from which to throw stones.

Not your typical development book

Josh does a wonderful job of weaving together three seemingly unrelated topics - love/family, development work, and food - into a warm and honest memoir. His story is at once his own as well as the stories of all the incredible people he meets and works side-by-side with in Rwanda to transform a region devastated by the genocide, build one of Kigali's finest restaurants, and start a family. His points on international development are insightful and refreshing, and could only be derived from someone who has worked and lived overseas (from the U.S.) in an emerging economy for an extensive period of time. If you're looking for a book that will take you on an adventure, tickle your intellect, and challenge your perceptions of how things should be - all while being very easy and enjoyable to read - then this is the book for you. Definitely not your typical book on global health, international development, aid work, poverty reduction, etc. etc. - which is a very good thing.

A well-crafted and inspirational read.

Josh Ruxin's book A Thousand Hills to Heaven is a must-read for college students, international businesspeople and global entrepreneurs. Best Practice Principles are clearly defined, based on trial and error.

It's extraordinary how much Josh Ruxin and his wife, Alissa, have accomplished in the relatively short period of time they've spent in Rwanda. Their passion for finding answers to "critical need" and willingness to listen to and learn from Rwandans have enabled them to discover how to be effective instruments of change in a vastly different culture. Life and lives have been altered forever because they have created an environment of hope through economic development and unique health initiatives.

If you've been to Rwanda, Josh’s evocative descriptions will bring back the sights, sounds and smells. The book made me laugh out loud and even cry a little while empowering me to continue my own efforts in the country. A well-crafted and inspirational read.

More manga should come in color!

Note: I'm reviewing the omnibus itself, not the story.

I'm pleasantly surprised with this omnibus version. I originally purchased it because it's cheaper than buying the volumes individually and I wasn't expecting great quality.

Being hard cover it will survive more usage than the flimsy paperback omnibus editions most companies are putting out now. It's the size of a large text book, not the small paperback size manga usually comes in. The pages are glossy white and all of the text is clearly printed in large lettering.

Having never read manga in color I didn't know what to expect, now I wish all manga came in color! Maybe it's because I'm just a casual manga reader, but I have trouble telling characters apart and figuring out what is going on in scenes where there is a lot of vaguely drawn detail but no shading. I didn't have any problems with this omnibus. I liked seeing the zombies, apocalyptic scenery and little details in crisp color. In the future I would definitely purchase colored manga over black and white, even if it came at a higher cost.

So, If you're not offended by manga being printed in full color or just want to save money when purchasing the first four volumes I highly recommend buying this edition.

Well worth the price

When I first saw that Yen Press was releasing a full color omnibus I was excited but didn't expect to buy it. I don't have the black and white prints and for a college student 50$ is pretty steep. Amazon however was selling it for 30$ and there are four complete volumes in it, so it's actually a better deal to buy the omnibus and I am so glad I did. I usually don't like the omnibus editions of things because they are thick and paperback and the spines get ruined so easily but not only is this a full color omnibus edition, it is also hardcover. Score!

I have actually only ever watched the anime, never got around to reading the manga but so far it seems pretty similar. I loved the story and art of the series and if you know anything about the series than you should probably be able to figure out if you would like it or not pretty easily. If you are offended by big boobs, panty shots and gore than this probably isn't for you. None of that bothers me however and a manga about zombies is something I am all over. Soon Yen Press is going to release Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka? too!

Back to the product, I am not sure what the black and white editions had as far as extras go but the large full color photos are a great edition to the series that you can't get from the anime, and the cover alone makes the book worth it. The cover is textured on one side which adds depth and best of all, it's reversible! The color adds clear distinction between things that sometimes confuse me in action packed manga printed in black and white. Overall I would say this is a great purchase.

Unbelievable Quality

I'm not going to talk about the content of the manga, but I would strongly suggest you research it to see if you would like it as it isn't for everyone.

The book dusk jacket is awesome for lack of a better word. Its very smooth and feels of very high quality. The blood hand prints have texture to them which adds so much to the presentation. What I think is especially cool is if you take the dusk jacket off there is a poster of two of the leading characters in a very um....provocative pose. I imagine if you like this manga you will appreciate it. They not only did a wonderful job with the outside but the inside is equally amazing. The paper they printed on is glossy and has a thickness to it you just don't get with your standard manga today. They did a fantastic job with the coloring of not only the characters and environment but also with the sound effects. Another huge plus is the size. It is just slightly smaller than your standard notebook paper, and it's hardcover. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this.

If you are a fan/collector then its a no-brainer, even if you have the regular editions you still have to get this. It is that impressive. On a side note I definitely think more manga should do this. I would re-buy every manga in my collection if they would release them in the way they have done here.

Excellent Introduction to the Culture Novels

One could argue whether an introductory set should have the top 3, top 4, or top 5... and then one could further argue which of the ten (so far) are the best. But I think most Culture fans would agree that these three choices are among the best. Personally I think _Look to Windward_ should have been included in this set, which would then be (almost) the first half of the Culture books, so the set loses one star in my review.

It isn't strictly necessary to read the Culture novels in the order they were written, since they don't depend heavily on each other, but this order might work well: start with _Player of Games_ in this set before _Consider Phlebas_, then read _Use of Weapons_.

If you're now hooked, branch out from this set and read _Look to Windward_, _Against a Dark Background_ (which is not strictly a Culture novel, but good), the story collection _The State of the Art_, _The Algebraist_ (also not strictly a Culture novel but set in a similar science-fictional universe, and also good), and _Surface Detail_.

_Excessions_, _Inversions_, and _Matter_ I'd consider second-tier, and optional. If you love all things Culture, you can always go back and pick them up later. _Feersum Endjinn_, another not-Culture science fiction book by Banks, is... odd and challenging. I haven't really made up my mind about it yet, or even been able to finish it.

I have not read _The Hydrogen Sonata_ yet and so can't comment on it, but If you're all caught up I'm sure you will make the right decision!

A boxset which will spark a life-long obsession - highly recommended for Science Fiction fans

I have read all of Iain M Banks books, and this boxset brings together the first three books in The Culture series.

It is interesting to speculate that when Iain M Banks wrote these story he definitely was not thinking about a series or a trilogy,and for us Iain M Bank purists it is entertaining to see them boxed up in this way, because in all honesty, Iain M Banks only ever wrote stand alone novels.

My point being that this is not a trilogy, you don't have to read the books in any particular order, and you can read one and never read the other two or vice versa.

To recap The ten books of the Culture are: Consider Phlebas, 1987; The Player of Games,1988; Use of Weapons, 1990; The State of the Art, 1991; Excession, 1996; Inversions, 1998; Look to Windward,2000; Matter,2008; Surface Detail, 2010; The Hydrogen Sonata, 2012.

To summarise each of these books:

Consider Phlebas is the story of anti-hero Horza who fight against The Culture

The Player of Games is about Gurgeh a bored Culture citizen who is blackmailed into fighting a very unique kind of game war on behalf of the Culture

The State of the Art is about three siblings who from a golden childhood see their lives descend into the murder and cruelty of civil war. The Culture wants to intervene to help them but... Things are never what they seem.

Personally I like the Player of Games the best. To my mind with its echoes in contemporary game culture it is the most accessible of iain M Banks texts, and I love the civilisation of Azad which has so many echoes of our own world.

However once you get started on The Culture novels, once Iain M Banks voice start to speak to you, you will be hooked for life, and eternally grateful that there in fact 10 distinct novels in this series to enjoy.

These books have truly visionary grasp of the future of humanity. We're not just doomed to be "monkies in space" repeating the same mistakes again and again. Also interesting what problems yet remain in their very advanced culture. Highly recommended for people who think the future is just a dull, higher-tech version of this one.

Great book

Gave this book to my dyslexic god-son, he loves it! He has problems creating mental pictures from written words and this has helped him tremendously. The best part is that he was so excited about reading that he blasted through a quarter of the book the same day I gave it to him, a huge feat for him. Hopefully this will help my godson to improve his reading capabilities.

OMG! I love Blind Sword Dude!

I first began to read this as a scanlation and was puzzled and dismayed when it wasn't picked up. I jumped for joy when I saw that Yen press grabbed it was was bringing it to our shores. This is a GREAT Story! Starts out easily enough, young girl in a car with people you know she shouldn't be with. After she jumps out of the car, and runs up to a blind guy walking down the street THATS when it starts to get complicated.
Fast paced with twists and turns, this story holds your attention and keeps you on the edge of your seat.
I was very surprised to see how large the volume was. Very happy with it, and looking forward eagerly to vol. 2. Can't come soon enough!

not your father's Zatoichi

I read the fan chapters after a rave recommendation, and kept wondering why no one had picked this title up for release in English. Thank you, Yen Press! Blind swordsman with a "cane" and some sweet tech toys is approached by a tween-ish girl who "hires" him to protect her after she jumps out of her abductors' car. Mamoru is unsociable, a master of kenjutsu. Haruka is an orphan with a precognitive streak that connects her to him. She tells him that the contract is... yup, "until death do us part." Which should be quite a ways off, as he's very, very good at what he does, and he's happy to challenge himself and improve his skills.

Add international terrorists, top-secret tech, yakuza, a shadowy vigilante organization that works to prevent crime, savvy cop Genda who recognizes Mamoru by sight. That's just the first volume. This series is smart, populated with characters who often think 3 moves ahead. Oh, and the action. A sword that can cut anything, automatic weapons, bombs, and tricked-out vehicles all move the story forward. It isn't empty violence. There's purpose and direction, and in this first volume it pulls you along like a speedboat. There'll be more background and some philosophical depth in future chapters - this is a series for grown ups, so there's meat mixed in with the entertainment - but the story keeps upping the ante. If this first offering sets the hook for you, it's all good from here on out.

Note that this book is over 400 pages long. It's actually Japanese volumes 1 and 2 together (the artist's tankouban end-pages are included and mark the ends of those volumes). I'm loving the double dose, even before the color inserts, good paper, oversized pages, crisp printing. Yen Press has done a great job, and here's hoping that UDDUP takes off. I've already pre-ordered Until Death Do Us Part, Vol. 2.

Published in English At Last!

I've been waiting for this series to get picked up in English for years, and I'm so thrilled to finally see it on the market here! I started reading UDDUP online through wonderful, dedicated fan-translations, and enjoyed both the story and the (admittedly small) community of fans immensely. What a joy to see it in print!

The only possible criticism I'd have is that I don't see eye to eye with the translator on a lot of the dialogue-mostly Mamoru's-but I'm willing to overlook it because 1) it's the first volume, 2) I'm a bit of a translation nut and 3) I'm just glad it's published in English at all. I've always been partial to the whole blind swordsman trope in Japanese media, and this was a great contemporary twist on it. I really fell in love with the characters and especially the art. I hope more people read and support it!

A Thrillingly Creepy Adventure That Will Have You SCREAMING For More...

UNMARKED was one of my most anticipated books of 2014!! I was dying to get my hands on an ARC because I couldn't bare to wait any longer. And I was sooo happy after weeks later and 2 begging emails, an copy of UNMARKED arrived on my doorstep, and I was elated!!! I was jumping up and down like an idiot!! But I was a happy idiot, so I didn't care!! I immediately cracked it open, unable to wait any longer...and, oh the joy I found within it's pages!! The scary, terrifying, glorifying, world that I adored!!!

I love Kami Garcia's writing style, she always sucks me in from the beginning and glues me to the pages. The story is so addicting and satisfying, that I literary wanted to stomp my feet like a little kid, screaming "I want it NOW" when I was done this book. Seriously, it was that amazing!!!

THE PLOT...

The world has become a living nightmare...your worst fears are coming true, people are dying, killing, and torturing others because they have a thirst for blood, a lot of blood.

Andras, a powerful demon has been set free and wrecking havoc on the world. Killing and controlling anyone he pleases and turning their world into hells playground, and he's just getting started...

Kennedy is the one who set Andras free from his eternal prison. She is the one who is responsible for all the lives that have and will be lost at the hands of the vengeful demon, but she vows to stop him, or die trying!

Kennedy has finally been reunited with the other members of the Legion. Well not the other members, because she's not even sure if she's really even a member of the Legion or not, because she is still unmarked. But Kennedy can't bare the thought to leave. She knows it's not where she belongs, but her heart is pulling her to the only place she ever felt she really belonged, and that's in Jared's arms. Jared, one of the twins who saved her life on more then one occasion from a paranormal being, and the other members of the Legion have become her only family. Since her mother was murdered by a vengeful spirit, and her father walked out on her when she was young, Kennedy has felt alone, until now. So when Jared finds her after their separation, she's ready to get back with the Legion and undo the mess she created that horrible night she unleashed hell upon earth. But that's only "IF" it can even be undone...

As the members of the Legion race against time to find the demon wrecking havoc all over the states, they come face to face with an enemy organization called Illuminati. But what information they bring and secrets they hold, could very well change everything the Legion once thought.

But time is running out as the demons start multiplying, and the deaths become more frequent. The Legion and the Illuminati realize they will have to put aside their differences and work together if they're going to have any chance at finding and destroying the demons once and for all. But when a surprise visit from someone in the groups past surface, and someone else in the group in grave danger, they realize they might just of ran out of time...for everyone!!

THE LEGION is definitely a series I highly recommend! I think fans of supernatural and paranormal books will find this one just as addicting and satisfying as I did!! Even if you're not a big fan of paranormal books, I recommend you still give it a try, because it's not that dark, bloody, gory type read, so you might find yourself enjoying it!!

Overall, UNMARKED was a great second book with twist and turns that satisfied, enough action and drama that kept me entertained, and a continued romance that I loved from the first book!! I will be counting down the days until book #3 is in my happy little hands!!

"Sequel that surpasses the original"

While deciding whether or not I really wanted to read this book, I was confronted repeatedly with a review the publisher chose to highlight-- "A rare sequel that surpasses the original."--Ransom Riggs

Now, if this seems like an odd reason to read a book, let me just say I've read the four "Beautiful Creatures," a novella that follows that series (can't remember the title), and the first book in this series. Up to now, it had been my opinion the writing--or maybe the editing--fell a little further with each successive title. I've got to agree with Riggs, however, this book exceeded it's predecessor in the series.

Is this stellar literary fiction that will last centuries; celebrate 25th-, 50th-, and 100th-anniversaries; and go down in the annals as an historic piece of young adult literature? I certainly hope not. However, it did manage to do what it was supposed to--keep me entertained from beginning to end.

To compare it briefly to "Unbreakable," there was less redundant phrasing, fewer over-the-top emotions, and a plot that for the most part did not twist back on itself. Unfortunately, there also weren't the incredibly creepy/scary/psychologically unhealthy supernatural specters. There was one (or two) borderline exciting manifestations, but the all-powerful demon didn't have many teeth, so to speak, and very few weapons in his arsenal.

My advice, if you read "Unbreakable" from beginning to end and weren't completely turned off by the Supernatural fan-fic nature of it, go ahead and give this one a read. I don't think it will disappoint as long as your expectations are reasonably low.

Confusing but Overall Interesting

When I read the first book in The Legion series I had mixed feelings. I liked it, but I also felt like it had a lot of similarities with the show "Supernatural." I'm way into the whole demon hunting mythology but parts of the books felt like things I'd seen before. I enjoyed it enough to pick up the second book and see what the what is going on in the Legion world.

What I liked: The mythology in the series is very interesting and compelling. Garcia introduced a lot in this next book and though I found myself incredibly confused at times, I was also incredibly interested. I felt like I was trying to unravel the mystery right along with the gang and with each new twist and turn I fell a little further into the story. Not only did the mythological mysteries keep me intrigued, but I love the camaraderie of the gang. Though that their friendship is definitely tested, I still loved their bond.

What I didn't like: Gosh I felt confused at the end there. The big bad seems to have no weaknesses, we've got a new facet with Illuminate and Free Masons that I could barely wrap my mind around, and there was a white dove. It was incredibly difficult to keep track of what was going on at any given time.

Overall this is a fun series for anyone who likes the whole demon hunting thing

Exciting and Thought-Provoking Post-Invasion Story

It's been years since parasitic aliens calling themselves "Souls" have invaded Earth and taken over. Once a "Soul" is placed in a human host, the alien takes over and suppresses the human's mind. But when Wanderer awakes in her new body, she finds that her human host isn't so easily overcome. Melanie, her younger brother, and the man that she loves have been in hiding; and she'll do anything to get back to them, even resist the alien parasite that has taken over her body.

The parasitic "Souls" are easy to dislike at first. But Meyer has given the alien race such a rich and colorful backstory that is truly fascinating. And Wanderer is a unique "Soul" who soon finds herself caring for the same people as her host, and finding herself torn between ties to her own people and the humans.

It's been a long time since I've read such a stirring, science fiction tale that has made me go through so many emotions. The Host is a deep and beautiful story, and very different from Meyer's popular, young adult series. This is a rare story that made me stop and think about the choices that are made and what I would do in their place. Intense, exciting, dramatic, and inspiring, I'd highly recommend this novel to any reader, not only science fiction fans.

A Fascinating Story!

In the future Earth has been taken over by a unique alien species. The infiltration was slow and undetected until it was too late. Now these aliens, known as Souls, live inside human bodies, which act as hosts for the invading parasites. Usually when a Soul is placed in a new host it is able to take full control of the body, pushing aside any remnant of the human consciousness that once lived inside.

After a Soul named Wanderer is inserted into her new host she soon realizes something isn't right. It seems the human who once inhabited this body refuses to give in and die. Melanie Stryder wants no part of Wanderer and is doing everything she can to fight back. Even though Wanderer controls the body, nothing she does is able to quench Melanie's spirit. She is always there, in her head, so to speak.

As time goes by Melanie's memories become Wanderer's and soon she finds herself longing for the people that meant so much to her host. Melanie left behind her brother and the man she loves, and now Wanderer has developed those same feelings. Soon Wanderer and Melanie begin working together to track down Melanie's loved ones, all the while being careful that they don't lead the other Souls to the humans who are in hiding. When they finally do find them, they must figure out a way to live peacefully with a group of humans who have grown to hate Souls. Emotions flare and relationships are tested in agonizing ways as two lives must share one body and as enemies must learn to co-exist and survive.

Stephenie Meyer has taken the publishing world by storm with her groundbreaking young adult Twilight series. The Host is her first stand alone adult novel and millions of readers are anxiously waiting to see how it stacks up. Having never read any of the Twilight books, I didn't know what to expect from a Stephenie Meyer novel. What I found was a fascinating story that is really unlike anything I have ever read.

While this story certainly has sci-fi elements, it is not what most would consider hard-core sci-fi. Meyer focuses more on the relationships of the characters and the intriguing dilemma of two lives sharing one body. Much of the book deals with Melanie and Wanda's complicated love triangle with Melanie's old flame and Wanda's new love interest. There is action and suspense laced throughout, and Wanda's relationship with the surviving humans is tension filled to the max. The novel's real strength lies in the character of Wanda as she is constantly pulled between her duty as a Soul and the compassion she develops from her connection with Melanie and the other humans. Indeed, Wanda is the most human character of them all.

Meyer's writing is top-notch throughout and never lags despite the massive page count. Readers who expect a fast paced storyline wrapped up in a mere 100,000 words may be disappointed. However, those who enjoy a steady paced tale that slowly builds into a powerful and emotional ending will love The Host. In the end we are left with just the right amount of closure, but also with a little taste of what is to come. I can only hope Stephenie Meyer will continue this incredible saga she has begun.

Sci-fi for people who don't like sci-fi

Just like Twilight is a vampire story for people who don't like vampire stories, The Host is a sci-fi novel for people who don't like sci-fi. Ultimately, this is a very human story about love, friendship, loyalty and family. It's moving and unique.

Truthfully, I wasn't expecting to like it much. I read the excerpt available on Stephenie's website a few months ago and wasn't overly impressed, but because it's SM and I'm a big fan of the Twilight series I decided to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did! I found the storyline compelling and fascinating from the outset - unlike other readers, I did not find the beginning slow at all (or any part). I thought the entire novel flowed very smoothly. I enjoy quieter moments in stories because those are often when you really get to know the characters and it makes the action sequences more meaningful. Once again, SM has created characters we can relate to and care about.

I've read some of the negative reviews and all I can say is that everyone has different taste. I didn't find this story lacking in any way - it's very different from Twilight but in my opinion just as good. In fact, thematically, I think it's better. We have a much stronger herione this time and get to explore a friendship between two women (Melanie/Wanderer). And while Wanderer is peaceful and self-sacrificing, no one could argue that she isn't a very strong herione who chooses to do things because they are right and ethical. For those who thought Bella was such a rotten roll model, Wanderer should make them happy. Even though this is considered an adult book, it's perfectly suitable for teens.

I'd say this is Stephenie in her best form. The entire novel from start to finish is well written, though provoking and weaves complex emotions into a fascinating storyline. She has proven herself to be an excellent storyteller (much like Wanderer). Bravo, SM!
