Great episode in the series, a bit more severe than others.
By Andrew D. Fraser
My young dragon trainers are second graders and they love this series. Although they are reading similar material, they like to save the "dragon books" for me to read to them as bedtime stories. As the reader is warned at the beginning of the book, there are a couple of points in the story where Our Hero has a rough time of it and may be a bit scary. These warnings are well-heeded if your own audience is under 10. We scheduled a couple of weekend wake-up story time sessions for the scary bits.

All in all a great continuation of the series. I enjoy these as much as my children do and am happy to hear that this is not the end of the line for Hiccup.

There is a fair amount of callbacks to earlier books in this installment. Be sure to read the earlier books first (in order) so that it all makes sense.

This series just keeps getting better
By CarolECI
The first few books in the series were chock full of bathroom humor and semi-naughty words to appeal to the young male readers. Now there's no need for this bait - they've been hooked! The books are longer, more complex and still a great read for kids AND the adults that read to them.

We have all 11 books
By Amazon Customer
If you have a 7-10 year old BOY OR GIRL, they will love these books. It is better to read some of the earlier ones to get what's happening in this one but it's an exciting coming of age story nonetheless. We have the whole series and I am rereading them with my 8 year old son. His older sister read them and now it's a family affair. The stories are touching, funny, exciting and filled with life lessons. I love the hero Hiccup and his noble heart. I actually CRY when reading some of these books. Highly recommend, especially good to get kids moving out of picture books and into listening to chapter books. Very good source of vocabulary too because the author uses big words and it will help develop your child's vocabulary. Start by reading out loud to them and then they can try to read a chapter to you. So much BETTER than the movie of the same name. READ THEM ALL!!! They will not disappoint.

Another Winner from the Stokes
By Karl Werner
In 2010 the Stokes published "The Stokes Field Guide to the Birds of North America". This legendary book has set the standards for complete field guides. The key characteristics of this book are

1. Outstanding photos showing birds in many different plumages and poses
2. A thorough description of shape, which is often a key to identification
3. Identification tips for groups of birds
4. Dates of plumage changes
5. Inclusion of sub-species
6. A thorough compilation of the birds, even the rarities

Unfortunately, by making this book so complete, it is too large to conveniently carry in the field. Thus, the genesis of the two new books - an eastern version and a western version.

The Stokes have drawn the geographic line through popular birding states such as North Dakota, Kansas, and Texas, and have often included the birds found in those states in both books which makes both the eastern and western versions more complete.

Happily, these two volumes have kept the great parts of the first book. To make it more portable, the Stokes have simply removed the very rare birds, and also the birds that don't appear in either half of the country. The result is a great pair of field guides that people of all skill and knowledge levels can enjoy. While still a little large for some pants pockets, they will fit into most vest pockets.

Bottom line - buy them!
Karl Werner

Excellent field guide
By Dotty
The new Stokes Field Guides combine stunning photography with important notes to aid in identification. Unlike other guides which rely on one or two photographs per bird, the Stokes have included up to eleven photos (for those pesky gulls!) so that birders can easily see important variations in plumage for each species. At only 8.5" x 5.5", this book packs easily. The Eastern Guide, along with the Western Guide are must-haves for any birder. Thanks, Lillian and Don!

A must-have for serious birders
By James B
Having used this book regularly for a few years, I would like to amend my review by making an even stronger recommendation. For decades, birders have debated whether a field guide should be based on artwork (e.g., Peterson, Sibley)or photography (e.g., the old Audubon series, and now Stokes). That debate is now over, and both sides win. Until the new Stokes guides were published, starting in 2010, paintings were always superior to photographs because they emphasized the essential features for identifying the birds. But Don and Lillian Stokes have elevated the quality of the photography and reproduction (plus excellent descriptions) to a level that makes their books very competitive. The advantage is that the photos show what the bird actually looks like, not a stylized representation. For the past two years, I have gone out regularly with the Sibley app on my phone and Stokes in my pocket. It's a great combination, so why choose only one?
And here is my original review:
The new Stokes regional guides are a must. I have been using Sibley ever since his guides came out, and I will continue to do so - alongside these new books. Sibley uses paintings to highlight each bird's key features, which is a very useful technique pioneered decades ago by Roger Tory Peterson. But paintings do not show what a bird actually looks like, and that is where the Stokes guides excel. They use very clear and representative photos--several for each species--so that you can compare what you're seeing in the field with what the species looks like. Subtle differences in shape or color become clear. If you can carry two field guides, make this one of them. If you're only going to carry one, then you'll probably continue to use Sibley, but the Stokes guides (either the new regional ones or the larger book that covers all of North America) will still be very useful to have at home for post-trip verifications.

Weird but Great
By A. C.
This series is fantastic! The premise is super strange (even for manga), but the characters are great and the plot moves along well. It has a similar story progression to Baccano, but the plot is completely original. This will definitely be a series that I read to the end!

Things get more fun every time I pick up this series
By GraphicNovelReporter.com
This second volume of Durarara!! not only follows our friend Mikado Ryuugamine, but multiple other characters as well. More insight is given in Celty's situation, including her own partial account of how she became a Dullahan. She allows us to look into her past life, what she originally did, but we never get to see what her head and face looked like. That, however, is nonetheless revealed in this volume, so take heed.

On Mikado's end, he is compelled to volunteer as one of the two representatives for his class, alongside Anri Sonohara, whom I think Mikado has taken a liking to, though he doesn't show it very well. He even comes upon her on the street as she's being bullied. Initially intending to ignore it, he quickly changes his mind, thanks to a helpful shove from Izaya Orihara, our delightfully crazed friend who has more attitudes than Rich Little and changes them at the drop of a hat. We also meet another interesting youth, a man Mikado was told to never get involved with, Shizuo Heiwajima. He is incredibly strong, and more volatile than the Incredible Hulk, but that's just my opinion.

We later find out whatever became of Celty's head --- a pharmaceutical company was keeping it for study and conducting tests on it. Apparently, however, due to the obsessions of the younger brother of one of the company's top scientists, the head was surgically attached to a body and given life. We even find out the identity of the said body, as it's being chased by Celty in the middle of a bid to reclaim what it rightfully hers.

The creators of this manga started off strong, and they are still going strong. The same characters now have some new things to contend with, especially that superpowered bartender, Shizuo! The saying goes, "the more the merrier," and things are getting more fun every time I pick up these books.

Continues to be Great
By April Garcia
After finishing the 1st volume, this one picks up from where it's from and continues with its great plot.

In this volume, it continues to follow Mikado Ryuugamine, but now, it introduces more characters to follow. One thing added in this is that it tells you the situation with one of the characters, a dullahan name Celty and how she came to Ikebukuro. Definitely loved the introduction with the new character Shizuo Heiwajima who reminds of me of the Hulk and his interaction with Izaya Orihara leaves a lot for you to decide what happened between them in the past, with Izaya being an informant.

If someone is looking for a good plot, some mystery, supernatural and weirdness, then this series is definitely for you.

Upper-class scoundrel Basil Seal, mad, bad, and dangerous to know, creates havoc wherever he goes, much to the despair of the three women in his life-his sister, his mother, and his mistress. When Neville Chamberlain declares war on Germany, it seems the perfect opportunity for more action and adventure. So Basil follows the call to arms and sets forth to enjoy his finest hour-as a war hero. Basil's instincts for self-preservation come to the fore as he insinuates himself into the Ministry of Information and a little-known section of Military Security. With Europe frozen in the "phoney war," when will Basil's big chance to fight finally arrive?

The Upper Class Goes to War
By The Garden Interior
Everyone had to join the war effort against Hitler, even the Bright Young Things of Evelyn Waugh’s comic masterpieces, Decline and Fall and Vile Bodies, and this hilarious book tells how they did it. At least, in the first few years of World War II, before France fell so disastrously and England’s prospects were temporarily ruined by the disaster of the Dunkirk evacuation. In those days of “the Phony War”, it almost seemed like a lark to some people.

Certainly it did to the odious sponger and charismatic cad, Basil Seal, who carries on scheming and seducing his way through the upper crust of Mayfair. Likewise to Barbara and Freddy Sothill, luxuriously ensconced in their Brideshead-like mansion of Malfrey, and the fabulously wealthy American Anglea Lyne and her husband Cedric who liked to collect architectural follies. It’s all very jolly until someone gets killed, but it accurately conveys how unreal the war seemed at first until Hitler finished off Poland and France and turned his attentions on England with a bitter and killing vengeance.

This is a dark comedy, played out with macabre joy and farcical pranks, as what little was by then left of the upper class after the first great war prepares itself, pompously and preeningly, for the second. It may be compared with, and read alongside if you wish, another great comic novel of the same period and tone, Pigeon Pie, by Waugh’s great friend and epistolary correspondent Nancy Mitford. I think Waugh’s effort is far funnier, far less dated and ultimately more durable, but both are brave attempts to mock and laugh in the face of dark and mortal danger, as peace, order and human decency collapsed all over Europe and the lights of civilization seemed to be switched off, one by one.

These books read today like the fascinating period pieces they really are, but they depict the humor and defiant insouciance with which an entire class faced the fatal danger of war and chaos, and strolled, dazzlingly and with a very brave and springing step, into the blazing furnace of total war.

A Hidden Gem From a Masterful Writer
By Kevin M. Derby
While not one of his better known books, "Put Out More Flags" is a gem by Evelyn Waugh. Turning from satire to taking up more religious and moral themes, "Put Out More Flags" will be appreciated by Waugh's fans as a bridge between earlier works like "Vile Bodies" and later works like "Brideshead Revisited" and "The Sword of Honour" trilogy.

Still, this book can be enjoyed on its own merits. Waugh skewers government and military leadership in the early stages of World War Two and offers hilarious accounts of how civilians deal with the war. Even children being sent to the country to avoid bombings draws Waugh's attention--and provides some funny moments. Despite the laughs, Waugh has a few serious messages in this work and they will stay with the reader. At the center of the book is Basil Seal who some readers might remember from "Black Mischief." Basil holds the book together as his constant schemes and pivots provide much entertainment. Thisversion also includes "Basil Seal Rides Again," a funny and biting look at the 1960s, which was the last piece of fiction Waugh wrote.

Waugh was one of the best English writers of the 20th century and "Put Out More Flags" ranks as one of his best works despite not being well known. Highest recommendation.

My three year old, Willy loves the Rescue bot series. These books are a perfect fit for him. He loves them and it gives another way to give him his rescue bot fix with turning on a show! ALA Reading List Award for Best Mystery
GASLIT LONDON IS BROUGHT TO ITS KNEES IN DAVID MORRELL'S BRILLIANT HISTORICAL THRILLER.

Thomas De Quincey, infamous for his memoir Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, is the major suspect in a series of ferocious mass murders identical to ones that terrorized London forty-three years earlier.

The blueprint for the killings seems to be De Quincey's essay "On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts." Desperate to clear his name but crippled by opium addiction, De Quincey is aided by his devoted daughter Emily and a pair of determined Scotland Yard detectives.

In Murder as a Fine Art, David Morrell plucks De Quincey, Victorian London, and the Ratcliffe Highway murders from history. Fogbound streets become a battleground between a literary star and a brilliant murderer, whose lives are linked by secrets long buried but never forgotten.

Amazon.com Review
Illustrations for Murder as a Fine Art Illustrated by Tomislav Tikulin Illustrated by Tomislav Tikulin   A Review by Katherine Neville

NY Times and #1 international bestseller Katherine Neville has been referred to as "the female" Umberto Eco, Alexandre Dumas, and Stephen Spielberg. Her adventure-packed Quest novels have been called a "feminist answer to Raiders of the Lost Ark," (Washington Post) and were credited with having "paved the way for books like The Da Vinci Code" (Publishers Weekly).

At first glance, Murder as a Fine Art--a jewel-like, meticulously-crafted historic detective story, set in the high-Raj period of Victorian England--might seem a complete departure for the king of the Thriller genre and "father of Rambo." It takes a tremendous commitment, not to mention a bit of a risk, for a writer like David Morrell, at the pinnacle of a long and successful career, to decide to create a work in a very different genre.

Morrell's secret weapon, which for decades has placed him at the very forefront of suspense writers, has always been his use of impeccable hands-on research: he has honed the art of seamlessly interweaving rich troves of fascinating detail into his plot lines and character sketches, so that we readers never feel--as so often happens with background research found in fiction--that we are being subjected to a tutorial.

Part of the reason Morrell's research has always paid off so well in his previous works has been his relentless quest to learn and master many of the skills he was writing about: flying the airplanes, loading the weapons, earning the black belts. He has rehearsed his characters' skills much as an actor rehearses a character role. But in Murder as a Fine Art, how would he accomplish this, when the story is set in the 1850s, and his main protagonists are a young woman who is self-liberated from Victorian constraints, including her corset!--and her father, a notorious opium addict! He accomplishes it, and brilliantly, by steeping himself so thoroughly in the context of nineteenth century London that, in his own words, he became "a Method actor," guiding us through the London fog (I never knew it was filled with charcoal!)--while acting out in his mind the roles of these real historic figures.

The "Opium Eater" himself, our lead character, was author Thomas de Quincey, a friend of Wordsworth and Coleridge who wrote thousands of pages that today largely have been forgotten. But his most infamous book of the day, and one that has long outlived him, Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, was so scandalous that it topped the charts of that era and was preached against (perhaps with good cause) in the churches. De Quincy helped spawn the school of "sensationalist" literature, with his memoirs and essays influencing fiction writers from Wilkie Collins to Edgar Allan Poe to Arthur Conan Doyle.

Morrell has chosen to open his novel in 1854 because that date marks the publication of the final installment of de Quincey's equally shocking three-part essay: "On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts," a lurid and gory description with pre-Freudian overtones, of East End murders that took place more than forty years before our story begins. The novel opens with de Quincey arriving in London for his essay's publication, accompanied by his daughter Emily, to learn that he himself is suddenly the prime suspect in a murder that precisely replicates those decades-old killings he'd so lavishly described in his book.

This wonderful set-up provides the real historic character, Thomas de Quincey, with the fictional opportunity to match his laudanum-enhanced wits against the villain's, while simultaneously utilizing his vast learning about the first crimes, and his personal understanding of the subconscious and sublimation, in aiding the police to solve the actual crimes. It doesn't hurt that Morrell's own vast learning enlightens us along the way, with asides on little known Victoriana, covering everything from the gutters, sewers and cesspools of the seamy side of London, to the highest echelons (equally seamy) of British political and bureaucratic corruption.

In fleshing out this era for us, Morrell has deployed one of the favorite Victorian novelistic vehicles: an omniscient narrator who can fill us in on "back story" contexts and details--everything from the vast panorama of the the Opium Wars between Britain and China, to fascinating minutiae like the 37-pound costumes that women wore daily, made of yards of fabric over whalebone hoops and corsetry. There is something about using this particular literary technique, in a book like this, that rings truer than a straight narrative because it is a storytelling style so accepted that it appears in nearly every novel of the period. Perhaps for Morrell's use of this particular method of reportage, Murder as a Fine Art has been compared with recent books that are set in the past, like The Dante Club and The Alienist; I would add that it also brings to mind another tour de force: the stunning literary footwork of an author who lured us into another alien era with equal mastery and success: John Fowles in The French Lieutenant's Woman.

But my personal favorite in Murder as a Fine Art is the character of Emily de Quincey. Who could not cherish a girl who can shed her whalebone cinches and don a pair of bloomers so she can dash down streets and leap gutters alongside the London constabulary? A girl with the wits to mess up her hair, rip open her bodice, and stagger into an angry mob that's threatening her police escort, and to divert the rabble to her imaginary "attacker" at the opposite end of the alley? Emily repeatedly saves the day by paying attention to the people around her, their needs and desires; by grasping how the context of their lives alters the roles they are able to play in it; by using her wits and her common sense as a complement to her father's brilliant, if drug-induced, vision.

The vicious psychotic killer may have been thwarted this time around, but I suspect that Emily de Quincey's services will still be needed to keep London streets safe from other threats creeping out of the dank London fog, in future: I vote for a sequel, Mr Morrell!

From Booklist
*Starred Review* At the start of this exceptional historical mystery, an artist of death prepares himself for his greatest creation—the gruesome slaughter of a young shop owner and his family. In 1854, East Londoners hadn’t seen such horrific murders since 1851, when John Williams also killed a shopkeeper and his family in a nearby neighborhood. The new crime finds Detective Inspector Shawn Ryan at the grisly, chaotic crime scene, where evidence is trampled as the killer blithely escapes. Visiting London at the time, for reasons he can’t fully understand, is Thomas De Quincey, scandalous “opium eater” and author of the 1827 satirical essay, “On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts,” and two newer essays in which he lauds various horrific details of the Williams killings as sublime art. DI Ryan initially treats the drug-riddled, elderly writer as a suspect but eventually accepts his help, if grudgingly. Military-thriller writer Morrell switches genres here in a riveting novel packed with edifying historical minutiae seamlessly inserted into a story narrated in part by De Quincey’s daughter and partly in revealing, dialogue-rich prose. The page-flipping action, taut atmosphere, and multifaceted characters will remind readers of D. E. Meredith’s Hatton and Roumonde mysteries and Kenneth Cameron’s The Frightened Man (2009). Sure to be a hit with the gaslight crowd. --Jen Baker

"Brilliant. Everything works--the horrifying depiction of the murders, the asides explaining the impact of train travel on English society, nail-biting action sequences--making this book an epitome of the intelligent page-turner."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

" Murder as a Fine Art is a masterpiece-I don't use that word lightly-a fantastic historical thriller, beautifully written, intricately plotted, and populated with unforgettable characters. It brilliantly re-creates the London of gaslit streets, fogs, hansom cabs, and Scotland Yard. If you liked The Alienist, you will absolutely love this book. I was spellbound from the first page to last."―Douglas Preston, coauthor of the #1 bestseller Cold Vengeance

"London 1854, noxious yellow fogs, reeking slums, intrigues in high places, murders most foul, but instead of Sherlock Holmes solving crimes via the fine art of deduction, we have the historical English Opium-Eater himself, Thomas De Quincey. David Morrell fans-and they are legion-can look forward to celebrating Murder as a Fine Art as one of their favorite author's strongest and boldest books in years."―Dan Simmons, author of Drood and The Terror

"Morrell's use of De Quincey's life is absolutely amazing. I literally couldn't put it down: I felt as though I were in Dickens as he described London's fog and in Wilkie Collins when we entered Emily's diary. There were beautiful touches all the way through. Murder as a Fine Art is a triumph."―Robert Morrison, author of The English Opium Eater

"The finest thriller writer living today, bar none."―Steve Berry

Fact and Fiction Mix for a Great Thriller!
By George Lichman
Crime fiction. Historical fiction. Thriller. Police procedural. All can describe Murder As A Fine Art by David Morrell, author of at least twenty-nine novels and six non-fiction books, including First Blood and Rambo. Despite his success as an author, Murder As A Fine Art is my first experience with Morrell.
The book, set in 1854 London, was inspired by the works of author Thomas De Quincy, who is most well known for a series of essays Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, which was later published as a book. The essays are autobiographical, and tell the story of a life lived mostly while addicted to opiates. At the time, in Victorian England, a book so open about addiction and life's hardships was very rare. However, it was the essay entitled On Murder Considered as one of the Fine Arts, in which De Quincy satirically detailed a series of murders in 1811, that inspired Mr. Morrell's novel.
Mixing the De Quincy's account in On Murder with De Quincy's experiences described in Confessions, Mr. Morrell wove an intricate web of fact and fiction to produce Murder As A Fine Art. In it, there is a murder of a shop-keeper and his family that appear to be copies of the 1811 murders. Coincidentally, the murders occur as De Quincy, who normally lives in Edinburgh, is in London promoting his work. London Detective Inspector Ryan suspects De Quincy after learning that the crime scenes are so similar to the book written by him, particularly because of the passion, knowledge, and lightheartedness in which On Murder is written. However, Det. Inspector Ryan quickly comes to believe differently and works hard with De Quincy, his daughter Emily, and ambitious London Constable Becker to find and stop the real killer.
Murder as a Fine Art is packed with action starting in the first chapter. Witty and humorous dialogue, even about brutal murder, was also interspersed throughout the book. The De Quincy character and his daughter are out of place in 19th Century England, before their time, and the reaction of others to them works both in their favor and against them. I enjoyed Mr. Morrell's presentation of 1854 police investigations and how although things have changed so much since then, the investigative processes, politics, importance of rank and class, and more have remained the same.

In addition to the plot and wealth of interesting and colorful characters, I found an underlying social statement about 19th Century England: the division of the classes and the sexes; the existence of two Londons, those with wealth and those without; the influence of big business in government policy; the influence of the drug trade in England and in the Orient; pollution, mob mentality and vigilantism and the British governments role in each.
While the book was set in London in 1854, many parallels could be applied to similar issues today: the growing gap between the rich and poor, corporate involvement in politics and government, the drug war, global warming, and the rise of the Tea Party.

One of many indicators of a good book to me is if I don't want it to end. Mr. Morrell achieved this in Murder As A Fine Art. I stepped out of my comfort zone when I chose it, but I'm glad I did. I think you will be, too.

Murder As A Fine Art
By Erin Davies
A few weeks ago a friend came over for dinner and seeing me sprawled out on our couch, book in hand, astutely asked what I was reading. A slow smile crept across my lips as I considered my response. I had to be careful. I was hanging on every word of the deliciously dark historic thriller, in love with every lurid detail, but how best to explain my enthusiasm for a book on sadistic serial killer left me in a bit of fix. The book in question was David Morrell's Murder as a Fine Art.

Now, having finished the piece and struggling to do it justice in a review, I find myself in much in the same position. Should I gush over the historic details that placed me square on the gas lit cobbles of nineteenth century England? Should I exclaim over his wonderfully dynamic if flawed and morally ambiguous cast? Or should I just bow to Morrell's genius as the author of such a titillating, white-knuckle opus? Quite a quandary, is it not?

Admittedly, I loved the story, but I can't get over the feel of this piece. I have no knowledge of the research that went into its creation, but I'm convinced Morrell exerted considerable effort in this regard. Cover to cover I merely had to close my eyes and I was there, right there on the dingy streets of Victorian London, trailing the sweet smelling coat tails of Thomas De Quincey. I'll grant I have a rather vivid imagination, but even so, I found the period descriptions in this piece a particular treat.

A palatably rich meditation of evil, plush with historic detail, dark and dangerous as the Victorian slums, Murder as a Fine Art is a brilliantly crafted, fast-paced, must read murder mystery.

Review of Murder as a Fine Art
By Patrice Hoffman
From the author who has given the world an iconic hero we all know as Rambo based off the action novel First Blood, we have his latest Murder As a Fine Art. David Morrell is an accomplished writer who has a strong following that I am happy to be a member of. I haven't read any historical fiction thriller by Morrell before by I think he's done a great job at a genre I hold near and dear to my heart.

Murder As a Fine Art is the fictional story of Thomas De Quincey who is famous for his memoir Confessions of an English Opium Eater. Because of his famous essays involving the Ratcliffe Highway Murders forty years prior, he is a suspect in the newest murders that are done in the same fashion. The essays he wrote with great insight makes De Quincey a prime suspect in London era when detective work and policing were not as we know it today. In an attempt to clear his name De Quincey enlists the help of his daughter Emily, and a pair of intelligent detectives from Scotland Yard.

The tension and suspense never seems to dwindle in this book. Morrell has taken an interesting piece of history along with a famous man in history and has brought them to life in a way that makes you question what's real and what isn't. The characters are well drawn with depth that I believe readers will enjoy. The struggle between De Quincey and his opium addiction have readers sympathetic towards him and eager for his vindication while others will feel strongly about Emily's resilience and enabling. All the main characters in this novel are deeply human and personify Victorian London during 1854.

Historical fiction lovers will appreciate that Morrell provides a lot of information about Victorian London, the people, and the attitudes of the times. Although some bits of information don't seem fluid such as on the establishment of the police department in 1829, I appreciated it being there. I only wish it was more cohesive than it appeared in the text.

Besides the occasional history lecture, this book is compulsively readable. Fans of Morrell will find Murder As a Fine Art is a definate read and should be added to their "read" lists as soon as possible. This novel isn't like Morrell's other spy novels, action adventures, or my favorite Creepers. It is so much more and I can't wait to catch up on the other novels by Morrell I haven't yet read.
