Excellent book on the subject matter and a very enjoyable read!

** FYI: When considering this book, read the reviews people write about the book instead of just looking at the number of stars. As described in the book, one of the favorite tactics of internet pranksters is to "raid" a site/forum/review -- essentially overwhelm it with negative ratings/info in large numbers just for kicks. **

I just finished reading Parmy Olson's We Are Anonymous and wanted to provide a review with my thoughts about the book. As someone who followed the events with Anonymous and Lulzsec as they unfolded in the news, tech journals, and twitter, I found myself eagerly awaiting the release of this book. I was very hopeful that it would provide additional "behind-the-scenes" information about the events and the people involved.

The subject of Anonymous is a rather amorphous one, and fairly difficult to quantify for those not familiar with its background. I feel like the author does an excellent job of taking potentially confusing subject matter and presenting a clear narrative in a style that makes for an entertaining read. She begins in the middle -- starting the book by discussing a hack that was so audacious in scope and impact that the reader is immediately hooked. This outlandish event is even more stunning because it is not fiction -- it actually happened in Feb. 2011.

The author then goes on to discuss the roots of Anonymous -- how it spontaneously emerged / evolved from a place that most of the internet's travelers would never know existed. How it grew almost organically -- changing and morphing. Its character changed rapidly over time, and continues to do so. She has done a good job of presenting these concepts that many would find difficult to grasp in a manner that someone who has never heard of Anonymous could understand.

The book goes into depth about the rise of Lulzsec -- an offshoot of Anonymous comprised of 6 individuals that went on an audacious hacking spree in 2011 that left a lasting impact on many companies and organizations including Sony, PBS, the FBI, the CIA, the US Congress, British SOCA, Rupert Murdock's media empire, and many security and intelligence contractors in the US and around the world. They also left a lasting impact on the hundreds of thousands of individuals whose personal information they leaked to the web as a result of their cyber-incursions. What made this group so different and unique is that they didn't accomplish their feats stealthily and with discretion -- they boldly announced their targets to the world on nearly a daily basis on social media sites like Twitter. I believe the author does a fantastic job of presenting the information about what was happening behind-the-scenes within the group itself. She was one of a few to actually get to regularly communicate with the members of the group on a regular basis, and as such, was privy to a wealth of information about their motivations, techniques, and concerns.

The book delves into the fate of Lulzsec as a group and the individuals that comprised it. It concludes with a revelation in the Spring of 2012 that shook Anonymous to its core. But those who read the book will understand that the very nature of Anonymous - chaotic and leaderless - will force it to continue to evolve -- clawing its way up from the depths of the internet again and again.

Another beneficial aspect of the book is that it clearly illustrates the peril that anyone with a social media account (facebook, twitter, linked in) may be placed in if they are not familiar with the techniques that are practiced every day by "social engineers" on the internet. Read this book and you may find yourself rethinking how relaxed your security settings and practices are with regards to facebook.

Lastly, the book contains a chronological timeline of the events as they unfolded in an addendum, and a section of detailed references that indicates where the author sourced material. I found even this section an interesting read for the insights that it gave.

So in summary, I highly recommend this book. It is a very compelling and entertaining read.

Be wary of any reviews posted on or around June 18

Olson appeared on The Daily Show on June 18, 2012. Hours later, her 4-5 star review average sank to just 3 stars after a barrage of poor reviews from people who couldn't possibly have actually read the book during that time. So I would ignore the less substantial reviews shown here, especially those posted by people with user names like "anonymous" (hello?!). The book might be light on technology in some areas or contain a technical glitch or two here and there but for regular people who are interested in a well-written story about the Anonymous group, I think it's a great place to start. She did actually do her own research and interviewed members face-to-face, so it's worth a read if you are interested in learning a bit more about the topic in a docu-drama type blend of non-fiction.

Amazing in depth view of anon that media usually can't or won't accomplish

This was a great book.

I highly recommend that anyone interested in internet culture reads this. I understand that /b/ gets upset every time someone not steeped in their world investigates it; the nature of the subaltern is to remain that way. But anon has done some amazing things, some questionable things, and some hilarious things using the anon tag - enough to warrant this investigation.

The world of anon is hard to pin down and good information can be hard to come by. What you normally get is stupid newscasts with exploding vans and warnings about weird internet hat machines. This goes deep into the history, world, and actions of those using the anon label and related groups. Ms. Olsen keys into the world of anon as an outsider; she anthropologically and intelligently comments and reports what she's found. The history is accurately documented; maybe the book misses some minutia about the history of how things went. Anyone who wasn't there or watching the whole time is going to miss some nuance, and this book does miss some little facts and raids and posts, but who cares? She delves far deeper than any other journalist who has looked into anon and produced a wonderful book in the process.

If you want to see some of the interesting culture on the internet; are curious about the history of anon or their actions; if you want to look at the possible importance and relevance of hackers in today's highly digital world; if you new to the idea of anon - you need to read this book. It's in the rules new folks, you need to lurk more; read through this book and stop being an auto-hater. I'd say buy it, but dl it first if you are a skeptic, you'll find it is really the only publication out there that does any justice to the complexity and importance of anon. Make a better one if you think there are missing points.

I suppose there is an argument that could be had for ages and rage posts for eons about how people shouldn't profit from anon... Well, no one is really profiting from anon's existence by the production of a book which documents the place and relevance of the actions taken to date and the evolution of anon and splinter groups. A lot of b is just upset they don't have the attention span or discipline to finish a project and an outsider did. Maybe the publisher should donate a few bucks to keep a server up somewhere - but would you?

I feel compelled to add that there are a couple mistakes with the tech in the book, but very few. And even if there were egregious mistakes made regarding the tech - which they aren't - that wouldn't detract from the story told here. You don't give a movie a 1 star review because someone at one point said something incorrect about an SQLi, do you?

Under the Sparkling Sea was an interesting read with the sea horses slant. Basically, Twilight (unicorn twilight) gets a letter from King Leo, the king of Aquastria (underwater Equestria) asking her if she wants to come to see the Annual Aquastrian Race. She can bring whoever she likes so she (obviously) brings all her friends and Spike. She casts a spell that gives them all fins and gills except Spike (won't work on dragons) who gets a glass bubble helmet.

They go down there on a manta hawk (manta ray + hawk) and mingle. They get along with the sea ponies well and learn about new creatures like the Crabbit and Jellyflies, and even make a new friend named Nar Wally. The other contenders in the race, the mermares, like to keep to themselves though. Due to an accident, Rainbow Dash is elected to represent the sea ponies in the most difficult part of the race (the race is in sections with a different pony doing a different part) through Crabbit's Claw Cave. I won't spoil the end for you.

The book is 37 pages (from the page the story itself starts) and FULLY illustrated. There are pictures on every single page. The pictures take up more space than the words do! There's a also a two-sided pull out poster inside. Also, the art style doesn't look like the show at all, but it's not a bad thing. It looked strange at first but after awhile I grew to like it.

So yeah, to sum it up. Short book, fully illustrated, interesting theme, free poster, doesn't look like the show's art style (your choice if this is a good or bad thing). I'd recommend any brony to read this.

A beautiful book with a terrific message

I bought this for my little girl's 4th birthday and can't wait to give it to her. She's sitting next to me as I write this review, in fact, watching a My Little Pony episode... She is in LOVE with them all, especially Twilight Sparkle and Princess Celestia. :)

The artwork in this book is really stunning and it simply GLOWS. If you're curious what it will look like (like I was before I purchased), you can search Google Images for "Mary Jane Begin My Little Pony" and you can decide from there if you like the look the illustrator captured. Personally, I love it.

As important for me is the message of the book. I tend to steer clear of lame, self-centered story lines. For those who want to remain spoiler-free, I will say that the story of friendship in this book is better than most of the TV episodes I've seen. (For those who don't mind a slight spoiler, see below for more details.)

I wasn't sure if I really wanted to spend $13 on this item, since I could have gotten two or three early reader books for the same price, but I am delighted by this purchase and am very happy I took the plunge.

I'd give this book 6 stars if I could. I hope you love it as much as I do!

The main message is that helping someone in need (specifically someone who's been hurt) is more important than winning a race. My almost 4 year old is very competitive and I think this message is just what she needs.

Unique style of illustration, so-so story

This book is an interesting take on My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. The illustrations are beautiful -- colorful, detailed, and with shading so it doesn't have the cartoon feel of the TV show. Spike and the ponies are all drawn faithfully in terms of their color and manes and cutie marks, but their faces are different, which I found disconcerting. This book shows the ponies visiting "Aquastria," a gorgeous undersea kingdom that I would love to see on the show.

The illustrations, while unusual, are definitely the high point of the book. The writing, on the other hand, is just so-so. The story is pleasant enough and the moral is nice, but the writing is awkward and stilted. Also, the author doesn't seem to have a good grasp on the ponies' characters or how they talk. For instance, does anyone think that Rainbow Dash would be nervous and self-doubting when getting the chance to unexpectedly take part in a race? And since when do Twilight's friends need "lots of convincing" to go on a trip to a new place? To be fair, I don't really expect the author to have watched the entire series just to write one book, but I wish she had done just the illustrations and concept, and gotten someone who knows the show better to do the writing.

So it's a pretty book with a cute story, but it doesn't quite have that My Little Pony sparkle to it. My daughter isn't nearly as interested in the book as one would expect for such a huge My Little Pony fan.

Too Greedy

I'm giving the story a five star rating but certainly not the price. According to my ipad's kindle app, it said the book was 338 pages. However, the chapters are shorter than ever (& what's up with that anyway), so it truly is not 338 pages. The kindle edition is only $2 cheaper than the $14.99 hardcover edition....so, since the "publishers" set the price, does that mean it only actually costs them $2 to print a book? This is digital content & should definitely not cost more than $10. The story is typically great & fast-paced & since I had pre-ordered, I've already finished reading it and feel like my $14.99 flew out the window. I'm done with these outrageous prices.

Hang your stockings and say your prayers

Alex Cross has been one of my favorite characters for many years. He's gotten out from many bad situations by the skin of his teeth.

First of all, the product details is wrong... This book description says 353 pages but it is actually 101. It's a short novel packed with gripping suspense and some hair-raising action. It's Christmas and as we all know, Alex has high family values. The kids, Bree and Nana is his life. He gets called out to a hostage situation that turns deadly and during this time Alex has to make some serious decisions that affect his whole family, especially at Christmas.

This is a most memorable story but, the price is ridiculous.

As I've read all the books with Alex Cross in them, I was eager to begin his next adventure. What a disappointment! I was hoping that Cross would continue to be "part of a team" of investigators working on a case. What I found was,,,Washington D.C. could not function unless Cross was in the lead. Even his family could not enjoy Christmas without his appearance. At one point in the story, Alex's wife appears at the hostage scene and tells Cross to leave and come home as it was Christmas. REALLY???? The entire story had people in awe of Cross. He became a "super hero" and not the character I've loved from past books.
When I got 89% finished with the story on my Kindle, I then discovered that the book had ended (most books go til 99%). For the money I paid and the lack of a farmilar character, I will check out James Patterson's next Alex Cross book at the library. If the story line fails me again,,,I think that I'm done with Alex Cross.:(

Wow, Marcia Clark has done it again with her latest Rachel Knight novel, The Competition. It’s a stand along book, but who would want to pass up the previous three in the Knight series. The topic—a high school mass murder—was a difficult subject to tackle without turning everyone off in the first chapter. Clark has managed the subject with sensitivity and dignity while writing an intriguing “can’t put it down” novel. The book begins with a mass shooting at a Los Angeles valley high school. It appears that the disguised killer duo had as their goal to outdo the Columbine murderers—and they succeeded. At first it is thought the killers committed suicide. Fortunately, an alert medical examiner quickly discovered the two bodies in the library could not have been the killers and were in fact victims. This set off a lengthy and intensely intriguing investigative search by Rachel Knight, Assistant District Attorney for the Special Trials Unit from L.A. County, and her partner and best bud, Bailey Keller, LAPD homicide detective in search of the killers. Clark’s writing is enticing—narration flows easily and the dialogue is engaging and always representative of the character. The novel delves deeply into the psychological makeup of a mass killer’s mind. Clark discusses the mental make up of a narcissist. He most certainly is empathy-challenged and self-absorbed, but not usually dangerous; while on the other hand, the severe psychopath is extremely dangerous in every way.
The story is fast-paced. Someone made the comment that the story is so well-written that at times you wonder if you’re reading nonfiction. The reader is led to feel the emotions of the parents who found that they did not know their own children.
Marcia Clark took an extremely difficult and emotional subject and wrote an enlightened and educational page turner. I guarantee that you will have difficulty putting this book down.
I rate The Competition a strong five plus.

What if a couple kids decided to repeat some of the worst mass shootings in the United States – and then do them one better? Starting with a Columbine-style school shooting at a Los Angeles area high school and continuing with an Aurora-style theater shooting, author Marcia Clark takes you for a roller-coaster ride that just doesn’t stop. Just as you think L.A. County's Special Trials Prosecutor Rachel Knight and Detective Bailey Keller have narrowed in on the two shooters, all bets are off. The real killers may still be out there, preparing for their next rampage.

This, the fourth in the Rachel Knight series, is every bit as good – probably better – than the others. Clark, a former prosecutor who led the team in the O.J Simpson trial, brings a professional realism to this thriller that will keep you engaged from the first page to the last.

The story starts with a high school pep rally turned blood bath. When two bodies are found in the school library with weapons nearby, we think Knight and Keller have the killers. But just a few inconsistencies in the scene suggest otherwise. So, who are these two and what role, if any, did they play in the carnage? Were they part of the killing spree? Or victims? When someone starts dropping clues that the killing spree is far from over, Knight and Keller begin a cat and mouse chase to find the true killers. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, Clark rips the ground from underneath you and sends you down another frightening path.

Two forensic scientists are brought into to help identify the personality of a psychopathic killer. Their discussion of that personality is chilling; you’ll find yourself thinking of people who have entered the stage that is your life and who were downright creepy. Could one of your friends become a mass-murderer?

The action is fast. The dialogue crisp and believable. Written as if you were looking over the shoulder of the characters, you are quickly drawn in to their lives. You will feel like you’re watching a carefully edited documentary that lets you experience the chase for the killers and that lets you get into the minds and emotions of the characters. You’ll feel the gut-wrenching emotions of parents who discover the child they thought they knew was really a person they could not know. And you’ll find yourself so caught up in the details that Clark lays out for you that you’ll wonder if you are reading a novel or a work of non-fiction.

This is a five-star work. Buy it. Check it out from your library. Ask a friend for her copy. But read it.

A Columbine Style School Shooting

Assistant DA, Rachael Knight, and her friend Detective Bailey Keller are summoned to the scene of what appears to be a Columbine copy-cat shooting spree. However, the findings at the scene don't line up. The supposed killers committed suicide, or did they? Dr. Shoe, the medical examiner, says the dead boys couldn't be the shooters.

This is the beginning of a tense search for the messed up teenagers who are on a killing rampage. The plot has many twists which keeps you reading to figure out what will happen next. I wouldn't recommend this book, if you're squeamish about mass murder, but the plot moves quickly and the author doesn't give undue space to the horror of the scene.

The novel is a fast paced crime thriller. There's hardly time to get to absorb one set of facts before being hit by another twist. Although the subject matter was uncomfortable, the author used the book to give insights into the psychological makeup of this kind of killer as well as the legal problems surrounding trying juvenile killers. The background on previous school shootings added reality to the story.

I enjoyed the book. However, it was because of the fast pace rather than the characters. So much was happening that the characters became more talking heads interviewing suspects than real people. In this book that wasn't a limitation because the interviews were the meat of the book. However, if you enjoy character driven novels, this is definitely plot driven and probably not for you.

Get ready for a penultimate sequel, a real rollercoaster experience in this beautiful fantasy land

"How to Betray a Dragon's Hero" by Cressida Cowell is eleventh installment in popular series for children "How To Train Your Dragon".

In this book, the readers are continue to follow the adventures of little boy named Hiccup who has the mysterious ability to talk to dragons and his dragon partner Toothless.
Hiccup and his small team of friends are trying to regain the Lost Things back from Alvin the Treacherous, the wicked king of Wilderwest and his mother. The matters are becoming even more complicated by the fact that at the same time they have to flee the Dragon Furious...

"How to Betray a Dragon's Hero" book is basically setting up for the final series installment, and with this one series became much more dangerous and darker compared to previous episodes.
Also, this sequel at its end has a great cliffhanger that will keep readers impatient until the release of the last twelfth continuing, offering lot of action, twists and turns that makes reading of its 400 pages to pass in a moment.

Although the target audience for this book is preteen kids, it's nice to see that the author didn't fall for clichés - her hero is equally passing through successes and failures, she's not making him invincible which is a good lesson for young readers.
Additionally it was interesting to see the changes in Snotlout character through this book, while he as character is becoming more developed and beginning to be much more popular character than you might expect.

So if you read earlier installments, in front of you is another exciting experience before the saga of the boy and the dragon will be finished; this sequel is anything but boring, so get ready for a real rollercoaster experience in this beautiful fantasy land...

get ready to be lost in an awesome series

i just turned 8 yesterday and my dad asked me to write my own review of this awesome series.
In this series discover how a small boy becomes the greatest hero! From the first book, you will see (read) that Hiccup's (the boy- hero) journey to save the dragons from extinction. Every book (9) makes him go through an adventurous journey with lot of action, friendship and DRAGONS!!!
This series has 9 books and there is a 10th one that came out recently and in the process of reading it...will post a review when done.

I just wish the author Cressida Cowell keeps on writing more books to keep me engaged in this world of nice and evil dragons!

You have to read chapter 17!! Amazing chapter about being a hero, betrayal, identity, and forgiveness

I am reading this book with my 8 year old son and I am blown away. We can't stop reading, and once we got to chapter 17 I was practically moved to tears. It is a stunning chapter with great dialogue about what it means to be a hero and leader, and what type of person should be king. It talks about why Snodlout NEEDS to hate hiccup because if he didn't... he would feel... other emotions like loss, grief, and bad about his own identity. They have a sword fight in this chapter, and I have gone back to read it 3 times now. Great book and great chapter...

Watch out! Harder!

I think now we have all the Emberly drawing books and this one is far-and-away the toughest. Ed's son Michael, in particular, favors more complex drawings that will be harder for the youngsters to emulate, though older kids will probably appreciate the step-up after mastering the other books. (Even Ed's stuff largely seems tougher.)
Also, just so you know, this isn't a "red" drawing book like the green and orange: a wider variety of colors is used, and more subtly than in any of the other books, even the Animals book (which also uses color, but not to this degree).
I'd still recommend it, but more for 7 - 10 year olds.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND ALL OF ED EMBERLEY'S DRAWING BOOKS!

Every year as the holidays approached my daughter requested this book from the library. Ed Emberley's books are still the best books for easy step-by-step drawing instructions - simple lines and shapes accumulate into a satisfying whole. My son rarely picked up a drawing utensil, but he'd be down on the floor, right beside his sister drawing away - satisfied and rarely frustrated. Emberley's "Big Orange Book" also recieved a lot of use in our house around Halloween.

Learn to draw the fun way

This book is from a series of 4 books from Emberly are the easiest books on drawing there are, period. Anyone young or old can learn to draw some great critters and vehicles from these books. ANYONE! All of his Big Color books are great, (They are a series, each named after a color). This one is famous for the easy way it shows you how to draw step by step, what appears to be a complex fire engine, but it is simple when you do it his way. THis book includes a number of fun ideas including Uncle Sam, police cars, ships and boats, Christmas holiday drawings. He even shows you how to make yours unique rather than a copy of his drawings. You can be the doodle hero of your classroom or office after using this book. He does it simply using very simple steps, lines, and basic shapes to start you off. My favorite in the series would be the Purple Book or the Green Book, then Orange, then the Red Book.
If you want to move up from here and learn the terminology of what you are doing, and really become an accomplished artist, the next step after these are the terrific books by Jack Hamm. If you just want to have some fun, get this book!
