soul eater is damn awesome

Yep my title says it all. Soul eater is my favorite manga, I own all the volumes currently released in english and have the rest on preorder. Probably the best thing about it is its style, and this volume is no different. Highly recommended.

I absolutely love this series, and bought this the second it came off of the Pre-order stage. I have all books 1-15 now, and I am waiting on 16 and 17 to come soon! :D
I totally recommend this series to everyone. One reason I can't get enough of this story is the art. In the beginning, it sucks, but its slowly gets better and better! As an artist who loves to draw these characters, I love seeing that ^_^

I really liked the first book in this series, but it was obvious in some cases that it was a first book. So I was pleasantly surprised at how much the authors writing has improved for this second book. I absolutely loved this one. Once I started it I couldn't put it down. It was exciting and had a surprise ending that I didn't see coming, but upon reflection realized had been subtly hinted at throughout the story. I am middle-aged, but have a soft spot for fairytale related stories, so I really am enjoying this series and hope he continues them.

Captivating and Highly Creative

I enjoyed the first Land of Stories book, so I was looking forward to reading this one. I wasn't expecting to be completely captivated with the story within the first few pages, but I was. The Enchantress Returns was so excellent I had a hard time putting it down; I ended up finishing it in just two sittings. The book is packed full of action and adventure, but there are some laugh out loud funny moments as well.

Like the first book in the series, The Enchantress Returns features twins Alex and Conner, who are drawn into the fairy tale world. The book contains many returning characters, along with some highly entertaining new ones. Readers will be familiar with many of the characters, who are taken from classic fairy tales, but Chris Colfer puts his own unique spin on each of them. He creates wonderful back-stories and weaves together the plots of seemingly disconnected fairy tales to create an entirely new fairly tale world based on all our old favorite stories. I especially liked his take on Rumpelstiltskin, who features prominently in the book.

The book is definitely appropriate for elementary school children, but it will also appeal to teens and adults of any age. I felt the first Land of Stories book sometimes struggled to find a balance between being linguistically easy enough for kids to read and understand and being sophisticated enough to attract older readers. The Enchantress Returns has no such issue. While the writing remains simple, it is also smooth and beautiful. The plot and the writing style will keep people reading.

I hope more books in this series are planned. After finishing The Enchantress Returns, I definitely want more!

I think it was a good book but you need to read the first one to fully enjoy it. The author should make a third and he already might be. This is book 2 in a series, and the first is the wishing spell. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes adventure and fairy tales.

A sequel that up the ante

I discovered David through my mother, who felt his books would be right up my alley. The first book I read of his was the first book in the Shadowdance Trilogy, "A Dance of Cloaks". After finishing the book I took to pestering the author for a sequel. "A Dance of Blades", is for me one of the best fantasy books I've read this year. The whole point of reading fiction is to become lost in the story the author puts forth. David achieves this in every book of his, I've had the pleasure to read. While this trilogy can be read on it's own it does tie into his other series. There is still a lot of mystery in David's world to explore, and can't wait to learn more with each book he puts out.

That said, the authors style is dark and gritty. David pulls no punches, and you never know if your favorite character will make it out alive, or end up dying a horrible death.

Pros: A proper sequel, that builds upon the characters presented in the first book.
Streamlined story that avoided some of the confusion in the first novel.

Cons: Have to wait on the next book to be written.

A Big Step Up From Book One

I was hesitant to begin reading Dance of Blades, the second book in David Dalglish's Shadowdance series. The first book, Dance of Cloaks, was okay, but there were parts I struggled getting through and I didn't feel that it brought anything new or interesting to the genre. However, what it did have going for it was the character of Haern the Watcher, and the scenes he was in were terrific. Well, I'm here to say that Dance of Blades is a great improvement on the promise that began in book one.

Rather than having to introduce everyone and provide motivation for them to come together (the war between the thieves guilds and the Trifect), Dalglish is now able to concentrate on filling out the characters and expanding the story. It's been five years, and Haern is still on his mission to eliminate the guilds. Alyssa is sends for her son to be brought home, and an act of betrayal ignites a slaughter. Veliana is trying to keep the Ash Guild afloat when she encounters Deathmask, a new and very intriguing character. The threads of the story seem to pull together much more organically in this book, and I did not find the story dragging at all. The resolution was satisfying, but also left enough open to send the characters in a new direction in the next book.

Many of the major characters from the first book return for the sequel. In addition to Haern, we read further about Alyssa Gemcroft, Veliana, Zusa, Delysia, and Senke. Their roles all flow together much more seamlessly than they did in Dance of Cloaks. Alyssa becomes a stronger character and more of a focal point. Zusa begins to play a pivotal role. Veliana is instrumental in the new war between the guilds and the Trifect. I particularly enjoy the development of Haern, who continues to struggle with who and what he is (an assassin forged by the father he hates) and who he'd like to become. He is a great conflicted protagonist, and is the reason I decided to read Dance of Blades.

There are also several new and interesting characters introduced. Deathmask is a mysterious "nameless" former wizard/thief, who stirs the pot between the guilds and the Trifect. He is definitely a character who's backstory needs to be told. Ghost is a giant of a mercenary, who's background is also begging for a story. Delysia's brother Tarlack jumps on the scene with wit and magic.

The city of Veldaren and the surrounding lands are also explored to a greater extent than they were in the first book, and Dance of Blades is better for it. It will be interesting to see how the world continues to develop as Dalglish continues to write adventures contained therein.

While I really enjoyed this book, it's hard for me to put my finger on just why it was better than the first. I did find it interesting that in his Note from the Author, Dalglish mentioned that Dance of Blades was his favorite and needed the least amount of revision from its earlier, self-published form. Something about it just rings truer, and I'm glad I took a chance on it. If the books continue to improve like this, the series will definitely be one to follow and Dalglish will put his name on the same level as some of Fantasy Literature's current big names. I highly recommend Dance of Blades.

Good lord. This book.

Dance of Blades starts off dark. Incredibly, mind-numbingly dark. If you've read the farm scene where they question Matthew's family, you know what I'm talking about. That entire scene is just terrible, monstrous, and depraved...and by the end of the book, the story is laughing at the absurdity of asking a wizard wearing bright yellow robes if he can be stealthy.

It's such a conflict of extremes, but it somehow worked. Instead of dwelling on all of the evil in the world, this book did its best to show a bit of good in everyone. Except for Arthur. Arthur's a prick.

The story doesn't diverge from the normal David Dalglish depression-fest. Most of the characters are still making selfish choices, and doing terrible things. This book just admits that there's more to them than that. It admits that yes, people can be terrible...but they can also be good. It helped a lot towards characterization, and making the reader feel sympathy for at least some of the horrible things the characters did. Alyssa's attack against the guilds wouldn't have been quite so tragic if we weren't allowed to see her grief that drove her to the point of insanity.

Once more, the story felt like it could have stopped with this one, but there's still another book in the trilogy to go. I wonder where it can possibly go from there...

STRONGLY RECOMMEND PURCHASE OF A DIFFERENT EDITION!

While I was still reading this book I added a special note to begin my book review! I am so very disappointed that the adorable little white kitten on the cover is pictured with blue eyes rather than the GREEN eyes that the author mentions AGAIN and AGAIN throughout the book! The team responsible for this title at the publisher's office at Back Bay Books for the Reissue Oct-2013 edition was NOT paying attention to details and sadly missed the mark on this one!

I'm sure that the individual that gave me this book for Christmas saw the cover and thought it would be a cute story nestled with joyful blips about the delight of a kitten's arrival at Christmas. Other than the 'rescue' of the kitten on Christmas Eve 1977, this story has nothing to do with Christmas or the holiday season. It is instead rather like a memoir of the little white kitten's first year in residence with the author Cleveland Amory, renowned for his devotion to animal rights. [His wonderful legacy continues particularly with The Fund for Animals and at the Cleveland Armory Black Beauty Ranch / Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Murchison, Texas.]

The book details Cleveland and the little kitten coming to terms with kitten/cat "ownership", naming of the kitten as Polar Bear, developing a feeding schedule, the first trip to the veterinarian's office, learning how to "pill" a cat, Polar Bear's first excursion of airline travel, fitness program, and foreign and domestic policies. Interspersed throughout the book are many historical facts about cats as well as details of significant events in the history of the animal protection movement and rescue operations by the author's The Fund for Animals. As long as the reader can move away from perhaps an initial expectation of a Christmas story, and particularly if the same reader has ever lived with a kitten / cat for any length of time, this book will be a most enjoyable choice.

As I dearly miss our little fur face that our family shared life with for slightly over 21 years, it was a trip down memory lane with laughter during some of the author's descriptions and explanations. As anyone that has ever lived with a kitten / cat knows, "Dogs have owners, cats have staff!" Read and smile, read and laugh out loud.

Madoka Magica Lite

First let me say that I'm a huge fan of the anime, it's in my top 5 anime of all time. So this is my perspective in comparison to the show. If you haven't checked it out you definitely need to do yourself a favor and do so. Now on to the review.

Story

This volume is split into 4 chapters, each one covering an episode from the anime. I feel that they shouldn't have done so as it feels rushed. If they would have split each volume into 2 episodes it would have been more appropriatly paced. If you haven't seen the anime you may find yourself flipping back to pages to see if you missed something. It does stay true to the anime very faithfully it's just that everything is not as fleshed out. I'm mostly disapointed that they spent such little time on the witches and their "lairs" or "wards" as they are called in the manga. They are some of my favorite parts in the anime so a little bit of a letdown there. Overall i'm pleased but they could have done a better job with this in my opinion.

Art

This took a little bit to get used to as it's done by a different artist, and it shows. This is not necessarily a bad thing it's just that the unique animation in the show is one of the major draws for me. The eyes in the show are one of my
favorite part of the character designs so I did want to see that in the manga, but I was dissapointed. The characters have less wide and squared jaws, Madoka in particular. Mami's hair is more realistic, and I kinda like it this way a bit better. Homura looks pretty much the same as well a Sayaka. The artist made some changes in the characters weapons, Mami's "Tiro Finale" gun is just her regular rifle, which was pretty dissapointing and Homura's shield is a diamond shape. Their magical girl outfits are pretty much the same, no notable difference as far as I could tell. Kyubey is even more adorable and cute than in the anime which I did like. The witches "wards" are barely seen in the manga, maybe 8 pages total...really disappointing if you ask me. They also seemed to lack alot of detail. This is a different artist rendition of them but I personally didn't like what they did with Charolotte in particular. Charlotte's first form is pretty much the same but her latter is quite different, it looks much less cute and much more evil. I think the stark contrast of the cutesy design with the events that happen to be a big part of what the show is trying to convey so again I was dissapaointed. When not in comparison to the show the art is definitely good, it's just liberties that were taken that I am not too fond of.

Overall

If you haven't watched the series and want this to be your first Madoka Magica experience, I would say watch the anime first as it does a much better job of telling the story. If you have seen it and not really into collecting manga then I would give this a pass as well. I would really only get this if you have seen the anime and just want more ways to experience it. It's good but not as good as it could of been, namely with the pacing of the story.

Okay, but not that good.

I was very excited about this manga, because I really liked the anime series. I don't think it's a very good adaptation.
The volume itself is pretty thin, slimmer than most manga. It only has one color page, so it seems to be a bit pricy for what you get.
I liked most of the art. The character designs were very nice. There were several frames that portrayed complex emotions beautifully.
Some scenes, however, weren't very good. There are parts in the anime that feature very surreal environments. The book didn't convey them well, at all. I know that it's a different medium and things have to be modified or cut short (like making a movie out of a book.) But the frames that show these parts wouldn't make sense to someone who has never watched the anime. They probably wouldn't be able to tell what was supposed to be happening, and they didn't make as much impact as I think they should have.
The action wasn't drawn very excitingly, either.
I was really looking forward to this manga because I heard that it had a different ending from the anime. I'll probably buy the other volumes. Unless you're a big fan it's not really worth it. If you haven't watched the animated version, don't even bother.

And here I thought it was just another "Magical Girl" series. Was I ever wrong.

I've been seeing things about both the anime and manga for quite some time, and for at least a year, I had been passing it up, thinking, 'Whatever. It's just another one of those Magical Girl series'. I haven't liked anything out of that genre since Sailor Moon, Card Captors, and Pretty Girl Sammy.

A few days ago, I saw that it was on sale via Amazon, so I thought, 'Why not.' I had been buying random manga for a while to see if I liked them or not. When I got this one, I immediately read it. The first book is short, only being 144 pages. But ohmuhgosh. Within those few pages, I was on the edge of my seat. I'm stunned with it, and quite frankly, I'm hooked on it. Soon I'll find myself diving into the anime.

I highly recommend this series to anyone. Whether you're into the Magical Girl series or not. Even if it's just picking up the first book and reading it. It's not as pretty as one would think. This series has some dark elements to it, and I think that's partly why I like it so much. It's not as happy as the images seem. There is so much more than meets the eye from the cute pictures and cutesy name.
