The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, by Holly Black

Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown's gates, you can never leave.
One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black.

Gr 9 Up–A dystopian thriller with a chilling twist. Tana, 17, passes out at a party and wakes up in a house filled with corpses. Her friends lie in crusted pools of blood as she searches through piles of belongings for her keys and boots. Her first thought is that someone must have left a window open. In Tana's world, vampire attacks happen. At the tender age of six, she witnessed her mother's transformation from a loving parent to a creature so desperate for blood it would lure and attack its own daughter. It is because of things like this that Coldtowns, quarantined cities where the infected go to live and die, exist. Along with Tana, the only other survivors of the party are Gavriel, a handsome and mysterious vampire, and Aidan, her newly infected ex. She decides to take them directly to Coldtown, but if crossing the barricades means staying there indefinitely, Tana's not sure she's ready to leave life as she knows it behind. Twilight fans will enjoy the drama, but its fan base need not be limited to those who read paranormal romance. Teens with a yen for dark, futuristic novels, and maybe even a few Anne Rice readers, will find this a refreshing take on vampire lit. As always, Black's writing is quick paced and thought-provoking. A must-have for any teen collection.–Jennifer Furuyama, Pendleton Public Library, ORα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. *Starred Review* What happens in Coldtown stays in Coldtown, because once anyone enters this Vegas-like prison for vampires and their infected human pets, there’s little chance of leaving it. After a fairly ordinary high-school party, Tana awakens to discover that she is surrounded by the corpses of her friends and classmates, who have all been drained of blood. While trying to leave, she finds her ex-boyfriend, Aidan, tied up but still alive, his eyes intense with the infection that will fully “turn” him if he receives the human blood he craves. Tana is saved from Aidan’s bite by a mysterious, red-eyed boy, Gavriel, who also materializes in the party’s gruesome aftermath. With hungry vampires scraping at the door, she escapes with both guys in tow to find a way to save them all: by somehow making it in—and out—of Coldtown. In this novel, inspired by her short story of the same name, Black returns with another dark, fast-paced thriller starring a sharp-witted, brave girl who does all the right things when faced with monsters. With rapid-fire dialogue, lavish details, and a wildly imagined world, this will enthrall Black’s fans from start to finish and leave them hoping for another bone-chilling, vicarious tour of Coldtown.HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Vampires plus reality TV plus romance plus Holly Black (plus a multiplatform marketing campaign) equals a potential mega-bestseller that fans are already waiting for. "We've all read a million YA vampire stories at this point, but no one writes like Holly Black: Her worlds are funny and eerily vivid, and Coldtown-a rollicking and decadent ghetto-is one of my all-time favorite fantasy novel settings."―Author of The Fault in Our Stars John Green, Metro New York

Chillingly good with a dose of classic Holly Black!
By Step Into Fiction
Holly Black is an author that I can rave about for days. I have read and reviewed a few books by her. I have also had the pleasure of meeting her on quite a few occasions. I consider her to be a personal hero of mine. I admire the way she creates these new worlds in her books, and characters that I have grown to love and adore. At BEA this year, I made it a priority to pick up her latest book The Coldest Girl in Coldtown.

This book was really good. It's the type of book that makes you wish that there were more hours in the day, so you can read more. It's just so captivating. But unfortunately for me the week that I read this book, I was so incredibly busy with real life, that I had to keep putting it down. I would try to force myself to stay awake a little bit longer to keep reading, and actually fell asleep while reading a few times. Most people fall asleep while reading when a book bores them, but it's actually the opposite for me. It's usually me doing everything to stay awake, but my body just collapsing on me.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is an extension of the short story of the same name that Holly Black wrote a few years ago. I actually did not read the short story, but after finishing the book I am gonna to hunt down a copy and read it, so I can compare the two. The novel is a modern take on vampires. Now it's been awhile since I've read a vampire book. But this book reminded me how captivating and seductive vampires can be, and also how dangerous they are. There is a perfect balance of human fascination with vampires and a nerve wracking fear.

The novel starts off with a seventeen year old girl named Tana waking up in a bathroom at a party to discover that everyone at the party has been slaughtered by vampires. Scared and confused as to whether the vampires are still in the house, she tries to plan her escape and discovers that her ex boyfriend Aiden is still alive and tied to a bed next to a vampire who is wrapped in chains. Tana quickly discovers that Aiden has been bitten by a vampire, and now has the vampire infection in his system.

The vampire aspect is very interesting. When someone is bitten by a vampire, the infection is called going "cold." In order for someone with the vampire infection to become a vampire, you have to drink human blood. You can choose to fight the infection, by trying to sweat it out for 88 days, but from the way it was described it is an extremely painful and horrendous process.

The vampire that Tana meets that is locked in chains is Gavriel. Gavriel is totally swoonworthy. I try not to gush and fangirl while writing reviews, but even as I am writing this review I am grinning like a school girl just thinking about him. He is the perfect mix of danger and seduction. He is also a little crazy, but he's the type of crazy that I enjoy reading about. As you read the novel, you learn more about him and you start to understand him. I loved watching his relationship with Tana grow. Tana was such a pleasure to read about. She's such a strong and driven character. She puts her love ones before herself, and fights for what she believes in.

The human obsession with the vampires in this book is very believable. Teenagers and anyone who feels like they just don't belong being obsessed with them just seems so realistic. Adolescence is a time where you just want to fit in. And here is a community where it seems you will be accepted. But of course nothing is easy. It is such a good example how there are no quick fixes. That everything you see on tv, is not what it seems. Vampires live in what's called "Coldtowns" and the more glamorous parts of vampire life are broadcast on television. I love how modern this story is. It's the first vampire novel I've read since social media has made a huge impact in everyday life. And social media is very present in this book.

I urge fans of paranormal novels to read The Coldest Girl in Coldtown! It's such an amazing read and is definitely one of the best books I have read this year!

Loved every page of this magical, gory book!
By Jennzah
As someone who grew up loving vampire books, I was a bit hesitant to read this as I heard that Ms. Black's inspiration to write it came from THE VAMPIRE CHRONICLES by Anne Rice (which I have been a longtime fan of). Since I was lucky enough to receive a copy at ALA in June, I decided to give it a go anyway.

I ended up loving it. From the beginning of the story where Tana wakes up amongst a houseful of dead people - to the suspenseful ending -- I LOVED IT. It's the first vampire novel in a long time that I've loved so much -- and it doesn't disappoint. It's whimsical and gory and fabulous.

A good vampire story is always hard to write. You could end up with something fluffy like Twilight -- or something dark and almost horrible like Carmilla. Holly Black finds the ultimate balance between the two -- writing a world where vampires are looked upon as gods by some, but everything is not as it seems. The story is a rich tapestry of blood, decadence, disgrace, and awesomeness. If you like a decent vampire story, I suggest reading THE COLDEST GIRL IN COLDTOWN immediately.

Reminded Me Why I Love Vampire Stories
By Sophie Riggsby
*Review posted on Page Turners Blog on 9/3/2013*

Sometimes a book inspires you to think back to the very first time you read a similar character in a genre. And The Coldest Girl in Coldtown made me do just that. PTB readers, do you remember your first vampire? I cannot forget mine; his name was Lestat. He was not a hero by any means; he was world weary, always jaded, but there was something about him that made me read on. I remember the thrill of picturing what his life would be like. I've met (fictionally, of course) many vampires since Lestat, but none teased my curiosity as much as he did. Until now.

Holly, Holly, Holly, what have you done? You've not only refreshed the concept of vampiric lore, but you've built an entire, credible (yes, I know vampires are fictional but you all know how involved I become in these matters) world. Coldtown is a tempting, seductive place where humans can be infected, where the entire world can watch vampish goings-on through their internet/TVs, where the allure of becoming cold is something that everyone can crave.

And Holly gives us this world through Tana's eyes. Tana who has a back-story that will haunt you as you read on. Tana who is strong and yet, flawed and worried about the repercussions of her decisions. Tana who is loyal to her friends and family even when the risk to her life is astronomically high. I simply adored her, no, I loved her. If you're like me and are tired of the super-strong-can-do-no-wrong characters, read Tana. She's so very, very believable.

I want to quote my favorite parts here, I really do, but they're so filled with spoilers that I can't. So, let me just say that Midnight and Winter may just be two of my favorite bloggers just because of their sheer determination to get to Coldtown and to document every single step in their process. In addition to them, there's Aidan. Aidan is a slick character who is so consistent that at times I wanted to smack him. And then, oh boy, there's Gavriel. The only thing I have to add is...move over Lestat and dozens of other vamps I've read in my past, Gavriel takes the Numero Uno spot as my Very Favorite Vampire Ever. He's melancholy in his madness, fierce in his determination and lovely in his romantic sensibilities. If I'm not making any sense to you, just go read him. I dare you to think differently about him.

And now I'm just going to sit back and re-read some of my favorite moments. Oh yeah, THAT KISS. I couldn't not BELIEVE Tana did that. Sorry, no spoilers. But who would kiss a vamp like THAT? OMGSOGOOD.

Holly, thank you for reminding me of why I love vampire stories, and why there is always room on my shelf for another exceptional tale.

A sweet exhalation or a last gasp?
By John Smith
I almost hesitate to follow up Tsuyoshi's consistently excellent ongoing review of this series with an effort of my own since there's a reason he's managed to claw his way into the top 600 reviewers here on Amazon (you're almost in the top 500 baby!), but my opinion on this series began to diverge from his with the 4th volume, and that trend has continued here to the point that I feel compelled to say something.

I didn't care for the 4th volume of this series, at all. That lead me to hold off on purchasing this 5th volume until its price had dropped appreciably, and even after that I held off on reading it until I needed something to cheer me up from the depression that a series of bad purchases (so bad that I've returned to reviewing things here on Amazon after deleting all my old reviews and going on hiatus for like five years) had thrown me into.

With great trepidation did I crack this book's spine, but it wasn't long before it had me laughing not only at its contents, but the ridiculous over thinking I had fallen into over a gag manga that may well have kept me from it. To be sure PUYO developed a formula and has since firmly adhered to it, but like Agatha Christie's murder mysteries and Mariano Rivera's cut fastball (get well soon Mo!), the truest exhibition of greatness is when everybody knows what's coming, but there's nothing they can do to resist it.

Case in point, whether you've devoured everything Haruhi that you could get your hands on for the past six years like I have (time sure flies...), or have never even glimpsed it aside from this book's cover, you'll grow more and more certain of what the punchline for the first chapter is going to be the closer you get to it, but can you really keep yourself from being amused by it?

Ironically this stand out fifth volume makes me even more anxious about the series going forward. Has PUYO truly mastered the art of throwing the exact same pitch over and over again (or at least making us think it's the same pitch despite having a four pitch arsenal, as for all the hype surrounding his signature pitch Mariano Rivera has always managed to get batters out with pitches that aren't cutters), or was this the last great effort amid an irreversible decline that's destined to end badly?

On the bright side, however you feel about the situations/writing in this series, PUYO continues to mature as an artist with each installment. Also, the English edition of the first volume of "The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-Chan" is coming out this summer, and having read the Japanese version of that some time ago (two years? three? just one?) I'm anxious to see what the localization team at Yen Press does with what has always struck me as a project that's more firmly PUYO's than this is.

(3.5 STARS) Amusing Parody Comic Still Needs Something New
By T.NAKAJIMA
The fifth volume of "The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan" begins with a silly episode about Kyon having a very weird "New Year's dream," in which Mt. Fuji-Koizumi and Eggplant-Nagato appear, but where is Sheep-Mikuru? And Puppy-Haruhi is joyfully preparing for a barbecue party. What does this mean?

The earlier chapters of the book include "Identity Loss" where Haruhi loses her hairband; "It's Always My Turn" where Haruhi creates a new trading card game (with Kunikida in women's clothes) and "The Activities of Mikuru Asahina" where elder version of Mikuru returns and starts questioning her identity. Not bad, not great.

The 4-panel comic section is, as usual, about Kimidori-san and Achakura-san and their antics. Mori-san, who was so impressive in the previous volume, is almost forgotten. When we are getting a little tired of the jokes, the book suddenly gets better with a hilarious episode about Arakawa-san "replacing" Koizumi, becoming the school's most popular student.

Doing the same kind of jokes is usually the sign of a comedy series running out of ideas. Creator Puyo's parody comic "The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan" has managed to avoid the common pitfall of becoming repetitious so far by constantly giving some new twists to the characters. This time, however, not everything succeeds and in some episodes the parody comic starts to parody itself, as seen in the opening chapter. The comic is still amusing, and Puyo's artwork is cute (especially that of tiny-sized Nagato), but some part of it has become totally incomprehensible to the uninitiated including fans of the original "Haruhi" franchise that spawned "Haruhi-chan."

Haruhi and the SOS Brigade's antics will go on (with the sixth volume already published in Japan), but the series needs something new and fresh.

Buy this book and save yourself from making mistakes on one of your most important decisions-career
By TK
OK so I maybe too old for doing this personality test but I've always known I'm in the wrong career field. In fact, I can't even call it a career- It's a job (grateful to have a job but still). Anyway, taking the test I now understand that my personality is polar opposite to my job. This doesn't mean I'm not capable of doing my job just that it takes more out of me than what I get back. I'm a square peg trying to fit in a round hole. Whether, I can change jobs this late in the game remains to be seen but I don't feel guilty about feeling this way anymore. I think anyone who is about to go off to college, feels unfulfilled at work, or just doesn't know what direction to go in would benefit from this book. I think I would have taken the advice and changed my major in college.

This is extremely helpful
By Mo833
I had purchased this book years ago, but did not really read all the chapters. I just skipped to my type. I recently began working with a career counselor who recommended it so I bought the Kindle version. Now that I am really reading it I find it so helpful. I am older now and I am not so set in picking one type of career. This focuses on how I make decisions and where my strengths lie. It also has a section on how we change with age.

Narrow Down Your Options Using Personaility Type
By PR
I've read many career books over the years and surprisingly found this one quite informative and useful. Some folks do not put much faith in the Meyers Briggs (MB) personality tests. To each their own. I, for one, have found them useful and mostly accurate and that comes from a born skeptic. The usefulness of the book lies in the structure and detail the author delves into matching personality type to types of work. I have read no other book that goes in the same level of detail. It helps narrow down your options.

Personality type is only one factor however. What the books lacks is an big picture approach. This is why I gave it 4/5. A better book for the high level review would be What Color is Your Parachute.

I am looking forward to combining the two in my career search effort.

American Coup: How a Terrified Government Is Destroying the Constitution, by William M. Arkin

A stunning exploration of the subtle erosion of freedom in an age of concocted fear and de facto military authority.

When we think of a military coup, the first image that comes to mind is a general, standing at a podium with a flag behind him, declaring the deposing of elected leaders and the institution of martial law.

Think again.

In AMERICAN COUP, William Arkin reveals the desk-bound takeover of the highest reaches of government by a coterie of "grey men" of the national security establishment. Operating between the lines of the Constitution this powerful and unelected group fights to save the nation from "terror" and weapons of mass destruction while at the same time modifying and undermining the very essence of the country. Many books are written about secrecy, surveillance, and government law-breaking; none so powerfully expose the truth of everyday life in this state of war.

We Live in "Forever-War"
By Christopher
Essentially: We now live in a time of "forever-war."

The worry about the government instituting martial-law is sooo 1990's because we now truly live a martial life. And we've accepted it. There is no "over there" anymore when it comes to the militarization of our lives. Over there is here. We live to assist the government in everything. See something, say something. And the bottom-line of everything that the government does in the name of national security is not to serve, protect, or assist you but to preserve itself. It's all part of the Continuity of Government (COG) and it's been in place for many years but it spectacularly grew into the multi-headed hydra immediately after 911.

No one and nothing is now immune to the shadow of the umbrella of government entities that "protect us" in the name of national security as fully 10% of the population of the United States (30 million persons) are astoundingly connected in one way or another to the Department of Defense. Arkin describes in specifics (most of it inefficient, bumbling, and embarrassing) the dual system of the government in protecting its continuity: a public system made up of laws and elected officials, and a hidden system made up of plans and appointed experts, unimpeded by Constitutional hampers.

Arkin writes near the end of the book of the expanding effect on all of our lives:

"Suffice it to say that whatever the threats, they are ubiquitous and unrelenting. At home, the enemy is not just Muslim Americans or Arab Americans or Somalis or Palestinians or Middle Easterners or those of the Muslim faith. It is illegal Mexicans. It is drug lords and smugglers and gangs and organized crime and the sex trade. It is foreign visitors and students and overcurious tourists. It is sovereign citizens and white supremacists. It is disgruntled school kids with access to guns. There are the incarcerated, the lone wolves, and the mentally ill. There are libertarians, antiglobalizers, environmentalists, Occupy and Tea Party activists, constitutional oath-keepers and survivalists, hackers and copyright stealers, the antiwar and the antigovernment. There are those who are just evil and those who are macabre attention seekers. Those are those who don't pay taxes, who want to keep their guns, who insist on living off the grid, who won't vaccinate their children, who don't want their library cards scrutinized or their internet activity tracked, or who insist on drinking unpasteurized milk. Precisely because constitutionally no one group can be targeted as such, government attention has to be equally applied to everyone, everyone potentially and equally a threat, a vast universe of potential dots, enemies of the state being not only those who take up arms or perform treasonous acts, but also those who insist on preserving ungoverned space in the ubiquitous martial landscape, where at home is already assumed to be over there, and over there, right here at home."

Detailed case studies of the steady progression of military expansion into our everyday lives through our governments (local, state, and federal) are provided from the Revolutionary War up to 911, Hurricane Katrina, and Sandy Hook. Any type of civilian or natural disruption is immediately deemed to be the venue for military maneuver as precedents are set and local control is superseded. Citizens are increasingly required to be registered, licensed, and screened to simply volunteer their help or services in an emergency.

The uncorrected advance proof copy I received in a Goodreads giveaway is actually 233 pages long, with an additional 112 pages of notes. It is concretely dense, not in size or weight, but in content. I really wasn't prepared for that, going into it with the idea that it was just another one of those books I could flip through but the facts presented pulled me in.

There were times however that it was just too too much. The most painful example is the use of extremely long sentences filled with numerous acronym-toting factual examples that were separated into thoughts with the profuse use of semicolons. It left me too often with crossed eyes. I won't bother with an example because I swear, I marked off a hundred quotations to provide but I think I'll scrap them as it would be too ironic to make this review as long and packed with details and examples as this book is. Suffice it to say, Arkin leaves nothing uncited or unsourced. His facts are as hard-hitting and surprising as his sources are varied and believable.

There is nothing conspiratorial in "American Coup." No one is blamed. He doesn't point at individuals who are setting out to take away your rights. He sees it as all being done with fair intentions. It is a "process" underway, a system that is perpetually growing. The military describes it understatedly as "mission creep."

The author is a serious and respected expert, especially among the people he reports on; he was one of them. The only thing that is shadowy in this book is the offering of any solution to what is occurring/has occurred. It's my belief that this is because there is no solution. Arkin vaguely alludes to an effort at understanding Constitutional intents and ideas but at this point, I think he, like most Americans, lives with a cognitive dissonance. It's apparent he's well-steeped in history and I'd think he's smart enough to know there's no turning back. Power doesn't relinquish itself so easily. This book is best served as a "record" of what happened.

Timely, Provocative, Chilling
By ddfromvt
Anyone who wants to know what drives the inexorable march toward more government intrusion needs to read this book. Arkin, in conversational and chilling detail, outlines the secret decisions our government is making as it delves further and further into our lives. More importantly, his dissection of The Program puts today's events -- Syria, Snowden, NSA abuses -- into context.

A breezy read for such a complex topic, "American Coup" represents the type of journalism that the founders certainly had in mind when they wrote the First Amendment. Be forewarned, however: you will become angrier and angrier with each turn of the page.

Nicely Done!
By Clif Steinberg
William Arkin is an essential voice for those interested in understanding the complicated landscape of the modern U.S. government. In this important work he illuminates a mostly unknown and unseen driving force in halls of power in the U.S., and describes how we have come to this point. With a great writing style, and the ability to weave together facts and concepts into a meaningful but disturbing tapestry, Mr. Arkin has produced an excellent book. Get it, read it, and pass it on to anyone you know who has an interest in modern civics.

Good book with a lot of highs and lows
By The Kid Book Reviewers
I started this series when I was 8 (I'm currently 11) when it had just come out. I've waited on the edge of my chair for the next ones to come out, and I finally got my hands of this one. Unfortunately, this book was a little bit too much of one thing and not enough of the other. The first half of the book had WAY too much action packed into something not very exciting. For example, when Max, Rocky, and Gizmo were in the swamp, just walking on and on, the author tried to put in action that just made the story seem too dull. The whole first half of the story went on that way until the threesome got out of the swamp. When they did, I felt as much in relief as Max did. From then on, Christopher Holt did a great job of putting in just enough action (what was needed) while still managing to keep us interested in the unexciting parts. I loved Julep, Dixie, Georgie, and even Flicktail was funny. (I really liked how Holt brought back something hilarious from book 1 that I thought I'd never hear again.) However, Dolph was almost too two-dimensional in this story, constantly going back and forth between being fair to Max or killing him. And in the end, when Dolph says he'll let Max go for good, I thought I'd seen the last of him, but in the next book, Dolph is a threat again. It was very confusing. But overall, a great series and a good book with highs and lows.

Great book, my 10 yeard old loved it
By Mom of 2
This series is my 10 year old's favorite book series. He had this book read in just a few days because he liked it so much. He likes reading but we have been having trouble finding books that are appropriate but challenging to read. He is 10 but has about a 9th grade reading level so it can be a problem to find books with appropriate content and a high enough reading level. This series was perfect for him and he cannot wiat for the next book.

What fate does the future hold for Kyon and Haruhi?!Koizumi and his fellows from the Agency are constantly cooking up ways to gently (*ahem*) encourage romantic feelings between Kyon and Haruhi, but Koizumi's holiday board game tests the very limit of Haruhi and Kyon's acting abilities! Thankfully there's plenty of other holiday fun to be had, including the many fine offerings of autumn and the dawn of a new year (spent dodging Koizumi's machinations)!! You'll find plenty of gags and guffaws as Haruhi dives into the world of four-panel and short comics!!

BUY THIS.
By Micah
This book is a lot like the others in the series. Most of it's "heh" funny, a couple of jokes are a chore to read so you can understand some jokes later on in the book, and there are a few EXTREMELY FUNNY bits as well. I'm happy to say there are actually 2 chapters where I laughed obnoxiously at every punchline and plot twist.

I'm giving it 4 stars, though. For an addition to the parody series, I'd give it a 4. It's pretty much just another book in the collection and has a little shortage of highly-amusing points (though it's above average for Haruhi-chan for sure!). Compared to other manga series, I'd give it 6 if I could.

Haruhi, Haruhi-chan, and Nagato manga are all easily my favorite series to read. To date, I have all (english) Haruhi-chan and Nagato-chan books, and Haruhi up to volume 13. Where I'm at with funds doesn't allow me to buy them all at once. My second-most collected manga series has some-teen number of volumes, but I only have 2 books. Why Haruhi isn't twice as successful as any other series (with the exception of DBZ) is beyond me.

I'm preordering volume 8 without a second thought once it shows up on the market.

Go Away, Big Green Monster!, by Ed Emberley

Caldecott Award-winning author-artist Ed Emberley has created an ingenious way for children to chase away their nighttime fears. Kids can turn the pages of this die-cut book and watch the Big Green Monster grow. Then, when they're ready to show him who's in charge, they'll turn the remaining pages and watch him disappear! This lavish reissue features dramatic die-cut eyes and sparkling foil on the cover.

From Publishers Weekly
The Caldecott Medalist makes wonderful use of innovative production techniques in this ingenious offering. Differently diecut and boldly colored pages reveal increasingly scary features of a big green monster--on the first spread, we see two big yellow eyes; on the second, the eyes plus a long blue nose; and so on, until the monster is fully unmasked. But that's only half the story. "You don't scare me!" reads the caption after the monster is shown in all its horror. Turn more pages and, one by one, the scary features disappear, as does, of course, the monster. "And don't come back! Until I say so," the text concludes. A joy to read aloud, the simple story entertains even as it helps its audience master common fears. Emberley's striking approach should win him new fans aplenty. Ages 3-8.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-- A graphic delight. In the tradition of Lois Ehlert's Color Zoo (1989) and Color Farm (1990, both HarperCollins), this is a clever series of die-cut pages that lets children construct and then deconstruct a big green monster. The book starts with a black page, and two round eyes gleaming through the text. "Big Green Monster has two big yellow eyes." Each page adds a new adjective-laden element, including a "long bluish-greenish nose" and "scraggy purple hair" until the culmination of effects prompts a response of, "YOU DON'T SCARE ME! SO GO AWAY . . . ." Each subsequent page subtracts one of the scary pieces until the last page is entirely black, featuring the words, "and DON'T COME BACK! Until I say so." This imaginative original work is a most friendly way in which children can take control over their own "monsters" or nightmares. It also has great visual appeal because of the bold interplay between shape and color. --Elizabeth Hanson, Chicago Public Library

From Kirkus Reviews
By turning these stiff, die-cut pages, even very young children can assemble a green monster with ``two big yellow eyes...a long blue nose...[and] a big red mouth with sharp white teeth...'' and then make it go away again, feature by feature. Emberley, a Caldecott medalist whose delightful drawing books demonstrate a combination of rudimentary forms to create a world of images, uses simple shapes in bright colors to build a scowling, cartoonish face that seems to float against the solid black field- -scary, but deliciously so. A satisfying game that may also allay some nighttime fears. (Picture book. 2-5) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Better than "Monster Spray"
By K. Bennett
This book is the ultimate "empowering tool" for giving little ones control over their fears. It first builds a monster, adding a feature or two on each page through the use of cut-out pages. First the two big yellow eyes appear, then the long bluish-greenish nose. By the time you add the big, scary green face, you've got one scary monster.
But don't worry, because once Big Green Monster is all put together, he's taken apart again. "YOU DON'T SCARE ME!" reads the text, "So, GO AWAY..." Page by page and one by one, the scary features disappear as ordered. The book ends with "GO AWAY, Big Green Monster! And DON'T COME BACK! Until I say so."
Wow. If only I'd had this book when that scary clown was in my son's closet. Or when the mysterious cowboy was in his brother's room. Or when that nasty giant was hiding out in my parents' fireplace about thirty years ago.

My granddaughter brought this book home from preschool and loved it so much she wanted it for her own library. The school copy was torn and taped so I knew it was a favorite with all the kids. It is a great interactive book to use with young kids and show them a fun side of monsters.
