The book is full of Norse mythology including gods and horrible monsters. This book is a must read.

Quick & Dirty: This is the story of three children who have been chosen to save the world. The book is full of Norse mythology including gods and horrible monsters. This book is a must read.

Opening Sentence: Matt walked through the center of Blackwell, gym bag in hand, jacket thrown over his shoulder.

The Review:

This story is mostly about three children named Matt, Fen, and Laurie who are from a small town in South Dakota, called Blackwell. The story is told in all three of the characters' voices. These children are special because they are descendants and champions of the long-dead gods Thor and Loki. Matt, Laurie and Fen must work together to find the other children who are champions of other gods, find objects with magical properties and save the world from Ragnarok. Ragnarok is what the Norse called the apocalypse. During their travels they meet many creatures, good and bad from the old myths including trolls and valkyries.

Matt Thorsen is the main character of our story. He is a descendant and champion of the god Thor. The Thorsen's all have the power of Thor's hammer but Matt's is much more powerful. Matt has the power to sense when something bad is close by, such as trolls. He is thirteen years old and the youngest child in his family. As such, his parents think that he should be just like his older brothers, but he is nothing like them, so he feels like a disappointment to his parents. While most of the members of the Thorsen family play football, Matt would rather be wrestling or boxing, which comes in very handy when he is chosen as Thor's champion. I liked Matt, he was not like most kids his age but maybe that was because he was the son of a sheriff. Matt made a good leader for himself and the other descendants. Even in the beginning when they did not all get along they still followed him without too many questions. I also liked how he grew as the story progressed. In the beginning he was scared and unsure about how he was going to lead the other kids, but by the end of the book he was a very strong leader who knew how to get everyone to work together and how to succeed.

Fen and Laurie Brekke are the other main characters in the story. They are cousins and descendants of Loki. Fen is Loki's champion. Many of the Brekke's can turn into wolves and Fen is one of them. In the beginning Fen is hard to like because he has an attitude problem and likes to get into trouble. Then you learn that his life has not been easy in the least and you start to feel bad for him. As the story advances, I actually started to really like Fen. He was very protective of Laurie and would do anything to keep her safe. Also, once he became a friend he was super loyal. You learn that a lot of his attitude is because he is scared and just using his attitude to keep people at bay.

I think Laurie was my favorite character. Laurie has her own powers such as being able to find other descendants. She has other amazing powers but you will have to read the story to find out her coolest powers. Laurie was a nice girl who wanted to take care of her cousin and make sure he stayed out of trouble. She is not your typical girl though. Even though she had no idea about the ancestry of the Thorsen's and Brekke's, she did not freak out when she found out. Laurie had no trouble jumping in and helping during a fight. At the same time, she was the person who was best at breaking up fights and getting everyone to get along.

There are other children who join their group and play important parts. The first ones we meet are Ray and his twin sister Reyna. They are descendants and champions of the twin gods, Frey and Freya. They have a hard time with the group and don't want to help at first. The twins have a secret that they are not telling the group. The next important character we meet is Baldwin. He is the descendant and champion of Balder and because of this he cannot be hurt or feel pain. Only one thing can hurt him. Balder is the nicest guy anyone could meet and is always so happy. Everyone, even Fen, who has a hard time trusting and liking people, likes Balder instantly. The last person who is important that we meet is Astrid. She is a witch who is dating the descendant of Odin. She is sent by Odin to help them retrieve Thor's hammer and shield. Astrid is hiding something from them and they may figure it out too late.

The description of this book may say that is for ages eight and up, but I am an adult and I really enjoyed this story. I am now going to purchase a copy of this book for the library I work for, and I am eagerly anticipating the second book. This book is full of Norse mythology, which is fascinating. The characters are endearing and the action is fast paced. I recommend this book to everyone, child and adult alike. You will not be able to put it down.

No Need for Comparisons: This Is Great on Its Own!

Please understand that all my reviews focus on the interests of my middle school students. I never do a full plot synopsis in a review and try to give as little away as possible.

My advice is that you don't go into this book ready to compare it to another series; just do yourself a favor and read it and let Armstrong and Marr take you on a gut-wrenching adventure! I think you will be glad you did, no matter your age.

The action is relentless from almost the very beginning. The basic premise of the story is that Ragnarok, Norse legend's Armageddon, is occurring again, and the gods' descendants will take their place on the world-ending stage (since the gods were inconveniently killed in the original version). Matt Thorsen is a thirteen year old (who just finished the eighth grade) ancestor of Thor while Fen Brekke (about the same age) is the descendant of Loki. Each are chosen to represent their god-ancestors. This time, however, Fen (Loki) is determined to be on Matt's (Thor's) side, partly because his cousin, Laurie, trusts Matt, and she is the only family Fen has (at least the only one who has been kind to him).

As the story develops, the kids meet with other descendants and their powers begin to manifest. You can figure Matt's out easily enough (uh, he's Thor, folks), Fen can shape-shift into a wolf, and the other descendants have their own powers. The mystery is Laurie; she definitely has some power from Loki, but I suspect she has a lot more than she knows or the others suspect.

The troupe of descendants must face incredibly fierce enemies (in a very sad turn of events, even Matt's own family) as they try to figure out how to use their powers. Matt discovers, much to his surprise, that he is a natural leader (previously, he had always been the "loser" of his family). And, boy, do the kids need him as they are thrown from one battle to another, all of them life-threatening. The plot's pace really is non-stop.

Character development is very, very thorough. You spend a lot of time reading about the thoughts, doubts, self reflections, etc. of Matt, Fen, and Laurie. It gives you a chance to catch your breath, but sometimes it gets a little tiresome, at least to me. I suspect this emphasis on character's thoughts is due to Marr's influence; I read her Wicked Lovely and it sorta' creeped me out to be a guy getting so deep into a girl's thoughts, especially when she was thinking about boys. Anyway, you really get to know and like the three main characters.

Occasionally, I read a battle scene that sticks with me long after I finish the book. For example, I'll never forget the thrill of Percy's final battle with Ares in The Lightning Thief, or Alex's come-from-behind win in Scorpia Rising. I have a feeling the battle with the Maras in this book will find its place on that list.

This is definitely not just a YA book; I recommend it for all adventure seekers!

Good Start to a New Series but Leaves Lots of Unanswered Questions

LOKI'S WOLVES begins a new middle grade fantasy series by veteran authors Kelly Armstrong and Melissa Marr. This series will mine Norse mythology for its world building. This first volume was very much an introduction to the series and the characters.

Matt Thorsen, a thirteen-year-old eighth grader, has always known he was a descendant of Thor. His family and his town are immersed in Norse traditions and mythology and are town leaders. His grandfather is the mayor and his father the Chief of Police. But Matt didn't know that he was to be the Champion when Ragnarok, the end of the world, came again. He certainly doesn't feel ready of qualified. He feels even less ready when he overhears his grandfather and the other elders say that they expect him to win but to die in the trying.

Fen Brekke also knows that he is a descendant of Loki. He can turn into a wolf. But his home situation is bad. His parents are gone and he is passed from relative to relative for fostering. His only friend, and the only person he really cares about, is his cousin Laurie. Laurie doesn't know about being a descendant of Loki. Her mother is ordinary and her father drifts in and out of her life. Laurie is constantly trying to keep Fen out of trouble and Fen is determined to protect her from all dangers.

Fen and Matt don't get along. But if Matt wants to rewrite the myths and survive Ragnarok, he and Fen will have to put aside their differences so that the descendants of Thor and of Loki can work together to save them all.

This story is a journey story wherein Matt, Fen and Loki try to gather allies who will help them in their upcoming fight. With limited guidance from the Norns, they head off to gather allies while running from the wolf pack that wants Fen to join. They are also trying to avoid Matt and Laurie's parents who have put out APBs for those two. It is rather telling that no one seems to care that Fen is missing.

The story is well-written but a little incomplete. Further volumes are definitely needed to answer the unanswered questions. This story could encourage readers to explore more Norse mythology to find out more about the old gods who are Matt, Fen and Laurie's ancestors.

Fun new series for young imaginative readers

When Ben Silverstein's grandfather picks him up from the airport to take him to Buttonville where he's been sent by his parents for the summer, things don't look so good. Ben has already gotten in trouble for telling "stories," designed to convince his mom to let him stay home. The town is nothing like his home in Los Angeles. It's a sad and run-down town, and I felt sad for Ben, driving in silence with his grandfather and wondering how he was going to survive his summer.

But before too long, things look like they might get better. Grandpa Abe turns out to be a kindhearted guy who encourages Ben's friendship with Pearl, even though the rest of the town sees her as a troublemaker. It turns out that it's generally a case of being a little scatterbrained and not thinking before she does things like pours blue dye in a neighbor's fish pond. But her fearless initiative is just what Ben needs when he finds what looks like a baby dragon. Pearl is sure that she saw a flying dragon land on the roof of the old button factory, and she finally convinces Ben to go with her to check it out.

The factory has a sign on it saying it's now Dr. Woo's Worm Hospital, but when her assistant Mr. Tabby sees what they've brought, he lets them in and they find out the truth, that it's a hospital for creatures from the Imaginary World, creatures who must never mix with the Known World. Unfortunately, they don't close the gate behind them and a Sasquatch who is currently being treated for a foot fungus gets out, unleashing the Imaginary World on the unsuspecting citizens of the Known World of Buttonville.

Mr. Tabby believes that Pearl and Ben should make it right, and send them out with the Sasquatch Catching Kit.

I enjoy books that suspend reality a bit and encourage kids to have an imaginative spirit. That's exactly what books did for me when I was a kid. A giant mythical creature aside, the adventure of Ben and Pearl, and the hint of further adventure to come, allows kids to imagine that they themselves might be one day asked to help capture something and return it -- and their town -- to safety.

This is a shorter chapter book, perfect for younger readers first taking on chapter books, but also equally interesting to older kids who like shorter books. It's 200 pages long, but it has large print and fun and evocative drawings from Dan Santat throughout, which breaks up the text and adds to the story. I do not remember any objectionable content such as questionable language bad attitudes that would make it inappropriate for younger readers.

A real hit with my grandson!

I ordered this book for my 6 year old grandson, who was coming to visit us for a week. He's not quite reading on his own yet, and just about to start first grade. We are all avid readers in our family, and I wanted to be sure he develops a love of books too. I read the book out loud to him and his eight year old sister (she is a fantastic reader) each evening at bed time. We finished it the night before they were due to return home. I was SO happy to hear him say, "I love the Sasquatch Book; it's the best book I've ever read!" Both children enjoyed the illustrations, and my very active grandson relaxed and listened with great attention as I read the text.

Needless to say, I've already pre-ordered book two in the series to be shipped to him as soon as it is published, so my daughter or son-in-law can read it to him at their home. My thanks to the author for this great series!

Enjoyable Read for adults and an 8-year old

My 8 year old daughter and I have been reading this book together as a general reading requirement for her third grade class. The level is appropriate for a third grader with a few difficult words thrown in. The chapters can be a tad long for a child to read (averaging15 pages) but definitely doable. The story was entertaining and had many laugh out loud parts for my daughter. I found it to be well written and would recommend this book. We have ordered and pre ordered the second and third installments.

Witty and Fun with a Dash of Unexpected Awkwardness

Have you ever had a defining moment in your life where certain insights about yourself that should have been obvious finally come into focus and you have that AH HA moment? That moment where it becomes clear to you why you made the decisions you did, everyone else knew this about you but you didn’t. Josh had a moment like that at 25, when he realizes that the relationship he thought he was currently in was less than he thought it was. Josh’s best friend has just told him that the girl he thought was his girlfriend was actually someone else’s girlfriend and Josh was the last to know.

Josh realizes then that he is 25 and never had a real girlfriend and in true High Fidelity (great John Cussack movie)fashion decides to revisit some of his prior near misses at coupledom to figure out why.

TOP FIVE things I liked about this book:

1. I Liked Josh as a narrator. He is funny and has interesting observations about the world. He sees things a little uniquely as he is missing 5 of something most people have, toes that is. He is also missing a foot, calf and femur all on the same side of his body luckily. But he keeps it pretty light and he has made some rules for himself.

1. Never be a burden.
2. Never be different.

2. Not only is Josh missing a leg he also was homeschooled until 9th Grade by some very Christian conservative parents. This totally leads to some funny dialogue on how to talk your parents into letting you go to public school or date before 16.

Mom and Dad weren’t so excited about the idea. Christian school, maybe. But public school? It was a well-known fact among Christian homeschoolers that public schools were bastions of gangs, drugs, teen, pregnancy, rap music, pop culture, secular humanism, witchcraft, and body piercings.

3. Some of the stories were funny and reminded me just how awkward I felt when I was in that middle school/high school age group. When you used your friends as go betweens for all of your critical information.
4. There are fun little charts and graphs along the way to illustrate a few key points in the stories. I totally liked these as almost all of them made me laugh a little.
5. Generally I like Josh’s life to date. I may even read his other motivational book and like it a little more. Josh had some great insights into people and how they react around those who are different. Sometimes avoiding and other times overcompensating.

And people never know what you’re supposed to do when the one-legged guy falls down. Are you allowed to laugh at him? Should you help him up? Maybe take him to therapy?

Josh is an interesting person and while I liked the stories about dating and trying to date I think I would have like even more stories just about his life in general.

TOP FIVE minor issues:

1. I enjoyed the first 3 stories about Josh and him clearly not understanding the signals these girls were putting out for him or how just unsure we feel when we are younger and why. But by the time we got to the college years I really wanted him to clue in already. Still every story had really great moments in it.
2. Did every girl have to be spectacularly beautiful? Okay so maybe this is a case of beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that but still at least 3 girls seemed to be liked based solely on their looks more than who they actually were as people.
3. I would have liked just a little more resolution with a few of the girls in the book. I know that ‘that’ is not how real life plays out most of the time but there were definitely 2 stories that really had hoped for just a little bit more from the other party.
4. While I liked that Josh figured things out and had that AH HA moment followed by success in the realm of dating it did seem slightly tacked onto the end. I really hoped for a little more about his currently relationship perhaps. However I did like how it was shown that he grew to trust someone else with all of himself including that he too needs help sometimes.
5. I really don’t have a 5, but 5 is a really good number. It's prime, its the fifth Fibonacci number and its easy to count with since most people have 5 fingers and toes.

All and all Josh is a likable guy to spend a book with. He has some interesting stories and I think I’d check out his other book since with some variation of the story content I would most likely enjoy it more. Still it was an interesting take on dating, emotions and being truly comfortable with who you are.

A fun memoir? YES!

This is the first time I read a memoir and I'm so happy that it turned out to be a fantastic read. Actually, hilarious is the right word. I laughed so hard with Josh's unsuccessful attempts to get himself a girlfriend when he was younger that I actually feel a bit bad about my reaction because it shouldn't be funny, but the way Josh tells it makes it impossible NOT to laugh.

We Should Hang Out Sometime doesn't really feel like a memoir (not that I know much about them) but like I said, it's extremely entertaining and I found myself rooting for Josh and groaning or feeling embarrassed for him every time something would go wrong on his dates (or when he would ask someone out). This is the kind of book that makes you want to put down just to deal with the intense embarrassment, or to cry out loud "OH YOU DID NOT!", and then break out laughing.

I liked how Josh writes about every almost-relationship he ever had. He goes from explaining the background of each girl-why he liked her, what he did when the time came to take the next step-to then pointing out his hypothesis and meeting up with said girl in the present and asking her about it (the nerve!). It was brave of his part (and a bit stalkerish too) to seek answers like that, and then make it publicly in this book. But awesome nonetheless.

To be honest, I had never heard about Josh Sundquist before this book. I didn't know he's famous, or that he's an amputee, or that at age 25, he had never had a girlfriend. But now, I can call myself a fan of his. I liked his upbeat personality while telling us about his memories and about his theories, and I can certainly see why he's a great motivational speaker. I highly recommend this book! I'm certain you will enjoy it.

A fun look back on romance gone wrong

This book was something different for me. I don't tend to read non-fiction, but this book seemed like a good "bridge-book" from contemporary fiction over to non-fiction since Josh was telling the stories of his failed crushes over the years. Indeed, it did read a bit like fiction sometimes - and it was great fun! I'm glad I gave this one a try!

What I LOVED:

Funny!
There are parts of this book that are just outright hilarious. Josh handles people's varied reactions to his disability with wit and charm (and there are times that you really wonder what people are thinking!). And Josh's early years are peppered with funny moments. His parents' somewhat narrow viewpoints are also handled with fun humor (I appreciated some of the homeschooling jokes because I homeschool my kids - I promise I've never told them that kids in public schools are all in gangs or anything!). The first half of the book is especially humorous. I enjoyed Josh's personality and his writing style. And though some of his actions made me cringe, I was happy to see his story come to a happy ending!

The conclusion.
I was actually a bit nervous about Josh's overall message for a while there - I was starting to wonder if he was going to claim that none of the issues he'd had in relationships really had anything to do with him at all. He seemed to kind of ignore the fact that some of his behaviors and personality traits might have been a little quirky and have something to do with his lack of relationships. And it seemed like he wasn't really learning anything throughout the book. But, in the end, he had a bit of an epiphany about himself and realized that his lack of self-confidence was really hurting him - and he realized where that lack was coming from. So, in the end, the story was inspirational and sweet.

The graphs.
Throughout the book are funny little graphs that Josh created about his relationships. They added a really fun element to the book that I loved!

The negatives:

Got repetitive.
Here's the one problem with a book like this. Since this is non-fiction, we don't get a fictional happy ending to each story - or, really, often, any sort of ending at all. And all of the stories started to blend together a little bit - since Josh's lack of self-confidence and his failure to follow-through on any of his crushes plagued him pretty much his entire life (at least up until the short happy ending we are given), his interactions started to get a little frustrating by the second half of the book. And I get it - he's a real person and that's really how things played out - he didn't really grow as a person in the area of relationships until after most of the stories were completed, so we don't get to see a lot of the growth that we'd like to see in a main character in a book. (Because ... well ... he's not a character ... he's a guy who took a little while to figure some things out about himself). Because of this, I LOVED the way the book started, and I enjoyed the ending, but it started to lag a bit in the middle. I also wish we'd gotten a little bit more of the happy ending story (I actually saw a video of Josh's proposal on his website, and it felt like a nice little epilogue to the book - I also loved seeing Josh in person because he comes off as more personable than I expected him to based on his descriptions of himself in his book).

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Even though the book did start to feel a little repetitive and lose some steam in the middle, I'd still recommend it as a quick, fun read!. I give it 3.5/5 stars.

Few writers have walked the line between farce and tragedy as nimbly as Evelyn Waugh, who employed the conventions of the comic novel to chip away at the already crumbling English class system. His 1934 novel, A Handful of Dust, is a sublime example of his bleak satirical style: a mordantly funny exposé of aristocratic decadence and ennui in England between the wars.

Tony Last is an aristocrat whose attachment to an ideal feudal past is so profound that he is blind to his wife Brenda's boredom with the stately rhythms of country life. While he earnestly plays the lord of the manor in his ghastly Victorian Gothic pile, she sets herself up in a London flat and pursues an affair with the social-climbing idler John Beaver. In the first half of the novel Waugh fearlessly anatomizes the lifestyles of the rich and shameless. Everyone moves through an endless cycle of parties and country-house weekends, being scrupulously polite in public and utterly horrid in private. Sex is something one does to relieve the boredom, and Brenda's affair provides a welcome subject for conversation: It had been an autumn of very sparse and meagre romance; only the most obvious people had parted or come together, and Brenda was filling a want long felt by those whose simple, vicarious pleasure it was to discuss the subject in bed over the telephone. Tony's indifference and Brenda's selfishness give their relationship a sort of equilibrium until tragedy forces them to face facts. The collapse of their relationship accelerates, and in the famous final section of the book Tony seeks solace in a foolhardy search for El Dorado, throwing himself on the mercy of a jungle only slightly more savage than the one he leaves behind in England. For all its biting wit, A Handful of Dust paints a bleak picture of the English upper classes, reaching beyond satire toward a very modern sense of despair. One of the Master's Best

You know that when you see a passage from Eliot's THE WASTE LAND appearing before the title page that you are not headed for 300 pages of fun and games. Sure there is the usual stock of Waugh humor, wit, and snappy dialogue to be had here, but this ranks as amongst his darkest novels. It's tragicomedy at its finest. It's also one of the most beautifully written novels I've ever read, perfect in pitch, cadence, wording, razor sharp characterization, mood, you name it.
Like a number of his novels, it is set primarily in England, between the wars, bouncing back and forth between London and an Estate in the country. The plot boils down to the break up of a marriage and the decline and fall of the central character, Lord of the manor and eventual "Explorer," Anthony (Tony) Mast.
Tony means well. He really does. It's just that he's so fixated on maintaining Hetton, his hereditary estate, that he doesn't even notice when his lovely wife Brenda engages in an affair with an inconsequential and boorish young society chap to whom Waugh assigns the inglorious name, John Beaver.
Waugh's customary drollery comes to the fore as he depicts the cavalier attitudes towards the affair on the part of Tony's and Brenda's social circle. They are rather like actors in a Restoration play, whose moral compasses have become entirely skewed. Though not as moralistic as some of Waugh's late novels, A HANDFUL OF DUST definitely offers a portrait of a very decadent society, indeed. These are not sympathetic characters. Even the two children who enter into the plot are hardly what one would call likeable.
This novel definitely takes some unexpected turns, leading us eventually to a denouement in the Amazon Jungle. The ending has to rank as one of the greatest in literature.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. The English are greatest satirists and Waugh was the master of the genre amongst 20th century writers. I've got a couple more Waugh books on my list, but will go with VILE BODIES next, as it's already on my shelf.
This edition has print large enough that I didn't need my reading glasses. It's the quickest 300 page novel I've ever read. It only took about 6 hrs cover to cover, and I am not a fast reader. I really was so transfixed that I had to read it straight through, which I don't usually do these days.

A note about those two endings...

This odd, clever, scathingly bitter satire seems a patchwork of various pieces of fiction--and, as its history attests, it is. A little over halfway through the novel, "A Handful of Dust" veers, rather unexpectedly, from a bitter reflection on an unfaithful wife and her upper-crust coconspirators to a Conradian parody of explorers in the Brazilian wilderness.
To explain this incongruity, The Everyman's Library edition of this fascinating work features a must-read introduction by William Boyd, but (as such introductions often do), it contains so many "spoilers" that readers are warned to wait until afterwards to peruse it. Boyd's essay does, however, summarize two salient aspects of the novel that are prerequisite to understanding (and perhaps enjoying) it.
Waugh's first marriage to Evelyn Gardner ended acrimoniously in 1929; four years later (and the year before he wrote "A Handful of Dust") his heart was broken a second time when Teresa Jungman turned down his proposal of marriage. Knowing this, it's hard not to read the fictional account of Tony and Brenda's marriage, as Boyd does, as "Waugh's own exploration of betrayal and sexual humiliation and . . . a form of revenge against the damage inflicted on his psyche by Evelyn Gardner. . . . It is an unyieldingly cruel and vicious portrait of a worthless woman. . . . The novel is full of hate and scorn, not just for Brenda, but also for the society in which she moves." There is no denying that the novel reads like an act of vengeance, and this contempt takes many forms: Brenda, at first charming and innocent, quickly and inexplicably devolves into vapidity and selfishness; Tony's closest friends hide from him their knowledge that Brenda is having an affair; and--at the book's most memorable, pivotal, venomous moment--Brenda shows more concern for her lover than for her only son.
Waugh published two entirely different endings, both of which are included in many editions. (Make sure you get a copy that has both versions.) Boyd explains: after writing "the first two-thirds of this novel at great speed," Waugh was unsure how to end it, knowing only that he wanted "a sad end." For the British edition, he appended, with minor alterations, an earlier short story, "The Man Who Liked Dickens," about an aristocrat trapped by a madman in Brazil. Yet he had to write a second ending for the serial publication for Harper's Bazaar in the United States, because he had previously published the "Dickens" story in a competing magazine. While the British ending is satisfying (and devious) on its own, it nevertheless seems out of place; readers who feel that they have suddenly picked up another story about a different character in the opposite hemisphere will feel some vindication learning that, in a sense, they have done exactly that.
I agree with Boyd that the American version, while simpler, is "truer to the novel's potent undercurrents than the short story Waugh recycled to finish off his sombre, disturbing tale of adultery." Other readers, obviously, disagree, and find the alternate ending too pat, too cynical, top predictable. (I, personally, enjoyed both endings for different reasons, but found both a little unsatisfying, each belying the book's claim to cohesiveness.) Yet the fact that Waugh could write two endings over which future readers and critics would war only attests to his brilliance.

Sparkling prose, surprising plot twists

This novel is not satirical, but dead-on accurate in its observations of a certain stratum of English society which is no longer shamed or shocked by its own actions. Brenda is put off by the "monstrous way" Tony has behaved -- namely, not allowing her to continue as the "victim" of the divorce proceeding. Her "friends" aid and abet her philanderings while gossiping behind her back, and allowing her to become penniless while they go off on holiday. Mrs. Beaver, whose son is the amoral, parasitic lover, is interested in the affair only by what can be gained monetarily from it.
The astonishing twist in the story line, following Tony's harrowing adventures in the Amazon jungle, is perplexing to some readers, but in fact serves as an interesting comparison of the two totally different environments Tony has had to deal with, one of "civilized" society, and the other of the jungle. The more "civilized" people in the jungle (all the English-speaking characters) create just as many problems for Tony as the bats and mosquitoes. (Perhaps some of the previous reviewers could have thought a little more along these lines before writing a bad review.)
Also, one has to think how Tony could have avoided his misfortunes. He is undone by his staidness, until it is too late. Perhaps Waugh is commenting on the English gentry in general(?) Waugh also pointedly observes how the upper-class children are brought up by nannies and stablehands, while the parents remain aloof to their daily activities.
A great novel causes the reader to think on several levels, while also being an entertaining read. This novel accomplishes both goals. Every word and action has its significance in a great work such as this one!

The intrepid girls of Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality have returned in another completely charming YA adventure! After having possibly saved the world quite recently, the girls are back in school learning how to dance, do household accounting, speak demurely, faint properly, flutter their eyelashes, and assassinate people at the dinner table. Sophronia, our protagonist, isn’t quite sure why she’s learning these things or who she’ll be working for — all she knows is that she’s having fun and she does not want to be sent home.

That is, until she makes the highest grade on the exam and invokes the jealousy of her classmates. Now she’s being ostracized, even by her best friend Dimity. What makes it worse is that Sophronia suspects there are evil plots and conspiracies afoot — they involve the werewolves and vampires and the first transcontinental airship flight through the ether. Oh, and of course, the mysterious “prototype.” While her friends aren’t talking to her, it seems that Sophronia will have to save the world without their aid. Fortunately, she has an arsenal of new skills, and she can always get some help from the sooties in the boiler room.

As was its predecessor (Etiquette & Espionage), this second book in Gail Carriger’s FINISHING SCHOOL series is a fun blend of steampunk, mannerpunk, and paranormal fantasy aimed at young adults but certain to be enjoyed by any age. The characters are endearing, the setting is delightfully fantastical (a series of connected airships), and the premise is hilarious (young ladies at a finishing school training to be assassins!). The fast-moving plot eventually becomes just absurd enough to be slightly madcap without going over the top — Carriger hits this balance perfectly. There’s a very minor style issue with Carriger’s occasional inconsistency with the narrative voice, but this is easily dismissed, especially since there’s an underlying sense of “isn’t this silly?” to the whole thing. These stories are adorable (I hate to use that word in a review, but it’s really what I think) and probably the most purely entertaining books I’ve read all year.

If you haven’t yet read Etiquette & Espionage, I highly recommend that you do before moving on to Curtsies & Conspiracies. If you’re an audio reader, you simply MUST MUST MUST try the audio versions (Hachette Audio) narrated by the brilliant British actress Moira Quirk. Her wonderful character voices and perfect interpretation of Carriger’s subtle humor makes Curtsies & Conspiracies even more entertaining than it is in print. It’s an audio treat, and one of the few audiobooks that I know I’ll listen to again. If you’re not an audio reader yet, this is a very good place to become converted.

Just like the first book, I didn't want this one to end. I savored this book, the characters, language, humor, it's been awhile since I thoroughly enjoyed a story. It's definitely a school that I would want to attend. I know it's two different genres, but it would be hard to pick between Miss Geraldine's and Hogwarts.
I almost want to say that I liked this book even more that the first. The conspiracy wasn't as hard to follow as the 1st. And having the boys around increased the humor and wit.
I so hope that there is a 3rd book, can't wait!

A Fun-Filled Steampunk Adventure!

"Curtsies & Conspiracies" is the second book in Gail Carriger's young adult "Finishing School " series that weaves the fashion and etiquette of Victorian England into mystery and adventure aboard a dirigible school for young ladies learning the art of espionage.

In this story Sophronia Temminnick has just completed her first six months of training and is being ostracized by her schoolmates because of her exceptionally high marks. Undaunted, she prowls the airship at night, listening in on teachers' conversations and spending time with Vieve, Soap and the sooties in the boiler room. What she learns is that a trip is being planned to London and that boys from Bunson and Lacroix's Boys Polytechnique will be travelling with them. Her curiosity aroused she uncovers clues to a plot to kidnap two of the students, and a conspiracy that involves supernaturals and humans. In this comedy of manners and espionage Sophronia begins to hone her skills as a rooky intelligencer, and finds herself lured into a love triangle.

The well-written plot set in a steampunk setting is filled with twists and turns as Sophronia grapples with a plan to stop a conspiracy that endangers not only her best friend and her brother, but the welfare of her country. As events progress our heroine is not only troubled by the paranormals and humans that invade her life with all their idiosyncrasies , but she's mesmerized by technology and inventions ; the guidance valve, hurlie, obstructor and sputter-skates that fascinate the reader as well. As the tension mounts and the action escalates Sophronia struggles not only with the forces that endanger her life but with her heart as it drifts between two boys from different classes and an unwelcome attraction to a vampire.

Like Gail Carriger's first novel "Etiquette & Espionage" the characters are well-developed and complex with all their weaknesses and strengths. In this story over- confident, curious, resilient, and authoritative Sophronia returns with her friends; the stubborn, chatty, faint-hearted Dimity Plumleigh-Teignmott, the indifferent and sometimes crass Sidheag Maccon, and the shy,soft-spoken, and timid Agatha Woosmoss. Their school adversaries, Monique de Pelouse and Preshea Buss, are still just as proud, manipulative, and haughty.
But it is the Pistons from the evil genius training academy and many of the teachers that begin to show their true natures. Pillover, Dimity's brother is still incredibly smart, but insecure, Felix Colborne, Viscount Mersey is arrogant, charming and very persistent and Lord Dingleproops seems shallow, foolish and biddable. Of the teachers, Professor Braithwope is easy-going, friendly and dedicated while Professor Beatrice Lefoux is stiff, intractable and austere.
Of all the memorable characters in this novel whether human, werewolf or vampire I loved Phineas B. Crow (Soap) the sootie who seems to know far more than he should about the upper class and Vieve Lefoux, the cheeky scamp who dreams of being an evil genius.

Although the climax left more questions than answers and was a little disappointing, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will look for the next in the series.

About the Author
Drew Barrymore has been a favorite of film audiences since her role in the Steven Spielberg blockbuster E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial in 1982. In the following decades she earned praise from both critics and audiences for her performances in a wide range of comedies and dramas. She has become a major force not only in front of the camera but also behind the scenes, as a successful producer and director under her own Flower Films banner, with such hits as Never Been Kissed, Charlie's Angels, 50 First Dates, He's Just Not That Into You, and Whip It. Outside of her film career, Barrymore currently serves as the Ambassador Against Hunger for the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). In addition, she recently launched the cosmetics line FLOWER Beauty and the wine label Barrymore Wines. Her photography has been exhibited at the International Center of Photography in New York and has appeared in fashion campaigns.

Thought Provoking Idea

I bought this as a gift for a friend who loves to collect anything that has hearts. She adored it!
Drew did an awesome job photographing her discovery of finding hearts in the most unusual places and what that meant to her.
Truly a recommended book for Valentine's Day and for anyone who has an appreciation of heart shapes!

Great Concept. Production Value Not So Much...

Reviewing this book is hard because I love Drew Barrymore and the idea of the book. That said, the production quality was a bit disappointing. The book is rather small and the printing seems a little cheap. On the up side, the concept is great and the pics are cute. I bought this as a gift and still gave it but added a few more things because the book seemed a little too small to give on its own. Ugh... I wanted to love this book. Hoping when she does another book the production quality will be better. Still love her though and all that the book represents.

An allegory of life

I have heard/read comments about the quality of photographs in this book and feel compelled to add my own. The critic misses the premise of the book; spontaneity. Life isn't always scripted and/or staged. Ms Barrymore found her inspiration in the simple things in the MOMENT. In my mind, this is reflective of finding love in everything, finding joy in everything, finding peace, etc. etc. etc.

When we can remove our critical lens and capture what our heart is telling us in each and every event of our lives, we will find it. Drew Barrymore certainly has in this simple, yet beautiful book. Let the critics say what they will, but what they're missing is EVERYTHING.

Thanks, Drew! My daughter's birthday is Valentine's Day and I presented her with your book. It is representative of who she is as a person; one who has faced adversities, challenges, sorrows and joy with the same eye as you. She has, and continues, to find the heart in everything.
