Disappointing, even for "pulp"
By Joy McCann
For reasons unknown, this book was written with two plots that have no relationship to each other. Most plot turns were predictable; those that were not related to storylines I'd stopped caring about at all.

The writers may have visited Los Angeles a couple of times, but they know little about what it is like to live here. They drive all over the place but never get caught in any traffic (even at dusk on Halloween). They call Pacific Coast Highway "Highway 1," whereas most Angelenos don't use that term for that thoroughfare anywhere south of the split from the 101. The Huntington Beach Pier is moved to Los Angeles--not just the county, but the city, and into LAPD jurisdiction. That mistake could have been fixed easily, by transferring all that action to the Venice Pier, but the authors simply didn't care.

A woman has a fling and is seized by guilt when she finds out that her booty call is married and has two kids. Although supposedly a smart adult, she is unable to place responsibility on the guy--who wore no wedding ring and implied he was free. She has to have this pointed out to her by a therapist, even though she supposedly has an academic background and is a therapist herself. Naturally, she has multiple therapeutic specialities--working with children, helping PTSD patients--and has an "academic" background. She lives in a million dollar home (a detached single-family dwelling in Santa Monica), with no explanation given as to why she is that wealthy.

There are way too many names given, for stock characters who are about to be killed. The point of view changes radically, jarringly, even in the middle of action sequences. These types of problems made the book a lot of work to read. Not "thought-provoking" . . . work.

Characters do a lot of things for reasons that are hard to fathom at all . . . until one realizes that they are doing them because it is convenient for the writers.

Near the end, the main characters take enormous risks with their lives and futures by engaging in illegal and dangerous activities in Mexico, when it would have made more sense to walk away and let poetic justice take its course. They are thereby able to achieve a "storybook" ending (that is no more believable than the rest of the book), but their motives for the extreme recklessness are never explained.

This book was easy to put down, and I finished it out of a vague curiosity only, not because I truly cared what happened to the characters.

If this is representative of Patterson's actual work, I will be taken aback--given his popularity. I hope he's better than this, and that he and Sullivan simply phoned this book in.

Essentially, this was over 400 pages of broadcast television writing, rather than a satisfying crime book.

One star is one too many
By Carolyn
What a total waste of time, money and paper. The book is two different, totally unrelated stories. I think Patterson wrote one of them and his co-author the other. Too many characters, too many plot lines, topped off with a quick, "let's get it over with" ending. James Patterson has been a favorite author for a long time but his Private series is a complete turn-off for me. I think he gets his jollies out of writing about kinky sex.

Review for Bronies and Pegasisters! :D
By MexterO
Rainbow Dash and The Daring Do Double Dare Review

This review is specifically made for Bronies and Pegasisters. I’ve done other extensive reviews on G.M Berrow’s other pony books. I hope to do justice for Rainbow Dash and her book.

A little about me, I’m a 22 year old college dude student in EE and CS, I’m a huge anime fan and brony. I love slice of life stories they are practically my life, I live for them.

I will put my comments in the following format [ my comments ]

Rainbow Dash Background:
Ahh, Rainbow Dash arguably the most badass pony of all of Equestria, the pony who’s practical middle name is Danger should give you heads up that this pony means business. Well, if you count the latest episode she has another middle name responsibility giving her full name as “Rainbow Danger Responsibility Dash” now that’s a name! She is herald as a fandom symbol and is arguably the most popular among both guys and girls [cue best pony debate XD]. She is ponyville’s resident practical, sports freak, prankster gal.

~ Spoilers after this Point ~ You have been warned!

Overall Summary [ Straight to the Point] -
We all know Rainbow Dash is a huge fan of the Daring Do’s adventure books. Ever since Twilight Sparkle introduced her to the series during her hospitalization due to a broken wing after a aerial trick mishap, RD has become a bonfide, legit fangirl for the whole series beating Twilight Sparkle in geekiness and egghead cred. [That’s quite a feat!] Now the story, G.M Berrow has written centers around Rainbow Dash proving to everypony that the tricks Daring Do performs in her books are totally doable and with her awesomeness she would prove it. In order to do so Rainbow Dash requests everypony to come up with dares either from their own imaginings or from the book. If she performs all those Tricks then not only will she prove that Daring Do is all that more awesome she will be able to show off again how awesome she is.

Things take a different route during the last 3/4 of the book when Zecora shows up and requests Rainbow Dash to put herself to the test by retrieving a stolen artifact, The Half Gilded Horseshoe! Rainbow Dash goes off on her own Daring Do adventure to get the Gilded HorseShoe back from a mysterious new enemy the Zebra, Braze before it’s too late and ponyville is overrun by spirits! RD learns from her venture a similar lesson that AJ learned from bucking the whole Sweet Apple Acres by herself that sometimes you shouldn’t be too bashful or in this case too proud to ask for help.

Complete Summary of the Book [A very brief synopsis of the book] -

The story begins with Rainbow Dash[RD] and other Daring Do fanatics waiting anxiously in front of a ponyville bookstore for the midnight release of the latest Daring Do book: Daring Do and The Volcano of Destiny! [Think video game release or cellphone release lines for the IPhone. XD]. As usual RD gets impatient [She lives an accelerated awesome life!] because all she wanted was to just grab the book and read the night away. AJ was there with her apple cart doing her usual selling apples whenever the opportunity arises, AJ: “Get yer Apple Fritters of Destiny!!” and Big Mac an apparent fan of Daring Do was also waiting in line dressed in style with only Daring Do signature explorer hat. Meanwhile, Pinkie Pie was helping decorate the bookstore with Plot Twist [indeed], the owner of the bookstore creating a lavish display of Ahuizotl’s temple as a centerpiece for the party. RD rushes in as soon as the doors opens and ends up wrecking the display, but she got what she came for a copy of the latest book [RD come on dude be a little more patient].

The next morning RD and Twilight Sparkle are in ponyville park hanging out, but RD as excited as she was after reading any Daring Do book couldn’t keep her excitement and kept talking about the book over and over again. Twilight being the geek she is didn’t like spoilers telling RD to not tell her anything about the book until she has finished casually reading it. RD replies: “You’re not finished yet?”, “Don’t eggheads like you just, like, look at the books and absorb what’s in them, anyway?” [Nice one GM. Berrow. XD totally got RD here]. RD upset that she had no one to talk to among her closet friends about the book said, I guess reading is just another thing that showcases how fast I am and how slow everypony else is,” “Story of my life…” [We can’t be all as awesome as you are RD. ; )]. Fluttershy leading a group of ducklings to a nearby pond see both Twilight and RD, wondering why RD was upset she comes to Twilight and asks what’s going on. Twilight explains RD’s impatience to discuss the book with somepony, and both of them come up with an idea to host a book club meeting for the new book. RD overhearing their conversation thought it was a great idea!

A few week later, Book Club was finally underway this very evening in you guessed it Twilight Sparkle’s house Ponyville’s local library, The Golden Oak Library. As always with any party Pinkie was there to start things off with word play and the usual head scratching though process she has. [At this point in the story I was in glee how GM Berrow includes a lot of background ponies and tie ins to the actual show truly impressive]. At one point during the discussion, Wild Fire asked a horrifying question to RD [Funny how this pony actually represents a animator from the show, talk about being one on one with the characters XD], “I like Daring Do as much as the next pony, but do you really think that all those daring things she does are realistic? … No way could a pony ever really do them in real life!” This of course struck a nerve with RD, she even get so impassioned that the almost spill the beans that she really is real! [MLP:FIM Season 4 Episode 4]. Hearing Rainbow Dash say this, her friends immediately shot a stern look at her to stop talking further about that [Hilarious! XD]. Anyways, since RD couldn’t tell them outright that she is real and that all her adventures actually happened she proposes to everyone at the book club that she herself will perform the stunts and any others they and anypony can come up with. [Thus begins the trials of Rainbow Dash…]

So in the morning, Pinkie Pie along with the CMC create the one and only Daring-Dash Board of Dares! Throughout that whole day, RD performed all the tricks from the Daring Do books and any other special requests even the weirdest one which was to babysit Pinkie Pie’s yellow ballon, [She insisted that many things could happen if he’s left alone XD]. Getting worried that RD may get hurt, AJ proposes a dare that she knew would stop RD in her tracks and that was to eat the hottest chili peppers of all of Equestria, Peppers from the San Palomino Desert. To AJ’s dismay this didn’t stop RD she instead goes along with it and does the dare though hesitantly [We know another of RD’s weaknesses aside form apple cider. XD] So the news of RD performing any dare spread far and wide and pretty soon everypony wanted to ask RD to perform their dare. Unfortunately, for RD the stakes would be higher for the next dare.

Zecora comes into ponyville square and requests that RD help her get back the Half-Gilded Horseshoe, a relic that is the key to obtaining great riches but at the price of releasing malicious ghosts all over ponyville. RD accepts the challenge, though her friends offer to help RD tells them that she would rather do this alone since she thought they would only slow her down. Rarity suggests that she should at least give her an outfit to match the part and so she could not only look the part but also be able to carry all the the “helpful” items they would give her. At first RD didn’t believe the items were of any value: A piece of rope from AJ, A teddy bear from Fluttershy, some green cupcakes from Pinkie Pie, a pair of horseshoes from Rarity, and finally a bookmark from Twilight. Little did she know that this would help her through all the perils she would face entering the Everfree forest in search for the thief and the Spirit Circle. After going through those obstacles, RD with the help of Twilight’s enchanted bookmark makes it to the Spirit Circle where she confronts Braze, a Zebra with blood-red eyes and orange and red strips. [This is the first time we get a Zebra antagonist, interesting. :)] RD notices her friends have been following her [Friendship is Magic XD] and that Braze had taken them hostage. She makes a deal with Braze that if she were to open the gate to the riches that he would let her friend go. As soon as Blaze gave her the horseshoe she made a quick exchange with the help of Pinkie Pie distracting Blaze. RD does the Daring Do “switcheroo” and makes Braze think that the horseshoe doesn’t really open the door. Then with a quick boomerang action RD release her friends using the horseshoe to cut the fire rope releasing her friends. Braze escapes, and RD and her friends make it out alive.

The overall lesson:

We all know RD to be undeniably probably the most skillful athlete of all of Equestria and she makes sure everypony knows about it and then some. XD Though she is very talented she can ,like AJ, be very keen on doing things solo. She may even feel that she may not need the help of her friends at all sometimes. She just has to remember that at times she shouldn’t have to hide the fact that she needs help. Don’t let pride get in the way Rainbow! Overall, the book was practically giving Rainbow Dash the lesson AJ learned in Applebuck Season.

Good job, G.M Berrow I hope to read your next book on ponies! :)

#3 in a good series of Pony books
By geri 74
I bought this for my niece. She is "My Little Pony" crazy! This is the third of the collection which I am sure she'll enjoy. I always read books I buy for children to see what the fuss is about. This is a nice series. It tells about having good morals and manners in the books. The ponies are always helpful in the end. They act like most children do. A little selfish or a little mean. But, always end up doing the right thing in the end after stomping their hoves abit. Good for children of all ages. Even us big kids!

Preparations for such an event are quick work in the hands of Sebastian, the house's most able butler, but corralling the eminent guests may prove to be rather more of a challenge. For this dinner party is anything but festive, and as a stormy night batters the outside of the grand residence, a far more violent storm begins to unfurl within. Dinner party of death
By Blue Johnson
The Queen requires Ciel to host a dinner party (she's not a guest) and what follows is what happens that night. The story starts with an outsider guest called Arthur. This "Arthur" wrote a story: A Study in Scarlett. We are introduced to the Queens fab butlers who are also peers. A murder happens and the only one without an alibi is Ciel. Then a couple other murders happen and Ciel has an alibi for those. I've already preordered the next two Butler books as they can't come fast enough. The translator notes in the back are awesome as they always explain Japanese translations and the author intent.

In love with black butler
By Lexi
Amazing series full of complex storylines and spectacular art work. I must say Yana Toboso is really doing well with suck a captivating series full of characters you are instantly drawn too. As the manga series, I must say the anime is very well written and very well done. The series is crafted very well and I'm enjoying them more and more as the volumes keep pouring out. Great addition to anyone who loves anime and manga especially dark fantasy mixed in with a little humor. This series doesn't deserve a "good" review it deserves a marvelous one!

Bright lights...screaming fans...cute roadies...country music sensation Bird Barrett has officially arrived.
Next up on the road to stardom, Bird's heading out on tour. Between opening for one of the biggest acts in country music and meeting a passionate young photographer who's working as part of the backstage crew, the weeks pass by in an exciting blur. It might even be enough to distract Bird from the way things ended--or never quite started--with Adam Dean.

When the tour wraps, though, it's back to reality. The label is eager for a new hit song, but the sudden fame, complete with a media-fueled rivalry with another country music starlet, has Bird questioning her priorities. Before she can pour her heart into her music, she'll need to figure out where it truly lies.

Filled with sweet country music spirit, Wildflower is a series you just can't get out of your head.

Review
Praise for The Road to You:"Whitaker's keen ability to write authentically in the voice of Bird offers readers a complete behind-the-scenes look at life in the fast lane of celebrity and success. The author's knowledge of music, especially songwriting, makes the story more authentic, and, as she did in the first novel, Whitaker includes an appended section with complete lyrics and music to Bird's next potential hit song. VERDICT Readers who enjoyed the first novel and those who are fans of country music will cheer Bird along the rocky road to fame and revel in her success."―School Library Journal

Praise for Wildflower:"Whitaker's novel Wildflower is pitch perfect and bursting with soul and heart."―Gwendolyn Heasley, author of Where I Belong and Don't Call Me Baby

"Authentic, romantic, and entertaining--Wildflower and Bird will make you fly."―Rebecca Serle, author of The Edge of Falling

"Wildflower's Bird Barrett is a country music star you won't soon forget."―Jen Calonita, author of the Secrets of My Hollywood Life series and Summer State of Mind

Whitaker (The Queen of Kentucky) has a knack for evoking the feel of a live performance-both the atmosphere of the venue and what it's like to play on stage. She's created a winning protagonist in Bird and given her a life that's unusual, a fascinating career, plenty of struggles to overcome, and a comforting and supportive family, even when they disagree. Fans of shows like Nashville will fly through this like Bird on her fiddle.―Publishers Weekly

"What separates this novel from others featuring teenage superstars is how grounded Bird is, even as she struggles to process the dramatic changes taking place in her life... Genuine dialogue, a quick pace and a plot that strikes the right balance between realistic and fantastic make for an engaging read... This tender introduction to a newly minted country superstar sets the stage for a compelling series."―Kirkus Reviews

"Fans of country music will enjoy the contemporary references to well-known stars, and aspiring musicians will appreciate the detailed plotlines involving Bird's work in crafting music and song lyrics... Instant success isn't always this easy, but Wildflower gives the reader a satisfying novel with a cast of characters who are all worthy of making it to the top of the charts."―SLJ

Previously published under the title Boy Nobody
They needed the perfect assassin.

Boy Nobody is the perennial new kid in school, the one few notice and nobody thinks much about. He shows up in a new high school in a new town under a new name, makes a few friends and doesn't stay long. Just long enough for someone to die -- of "natural causes." Mission accomplished, Boy Nobody disappears, moving on to the next target.

But when The Program assigns him to the mayor of New York City, things change. Somewhere deep inside, Boy Nobody is somebody: the kid he once was; the teen who wants normal things, like a real home and a girlfriend; a young man who wants out. And who just might want those things badly enough to sabotage The Program's mission.

In this action-packed series debut, author Allen Zadoff pens a page-turning thriller that is as thought-provoking as it is gripping, introducing an utterly original and unforgettable antihero.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-In this fast-paced thriller, readers quickly learn that 16-year-old "Boy Nobody," a Jason Bourne-like assassin, doesn't have friends. He receives his assignments from a clandestine group called "The Program." Intelligent and skilled in combat, he's been trained to ignore sentiment and emotion in favor of finely tuned instincts and intuition to kill. But nagging questions about his past, The Program, and his role in it are brought to the forefront when his handlers, "Mother" and "Father," give him a new mission on an accelerated time line. The latest target is beautiful Sam Goldberg's father, who's also the lauded mayor of New York City. This novel is predominately narrated by Boy Nobody in first-person present tense (save for the occasional revelatory flashback). The teen characters are world-weary and mature, but at the same time realistically vulnerable and susceptible to manipulation. Sex is suggested or happens off page. With short, action-filled chapters, this is a good choice for reluctant readers. It reads much like popular adult thrillers and will certainly find its way into the hands of guys, but also holds appeal for any suspense-novel fan. Unresolved mysteries and an open-ended conclusion make this a promising start to an exciting new series.-Danielle Serra, Cliffside Park Public Library, NJα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Boy Nobody is a coldly dispassionate teenage assassin working for a mysterious organization called the Program. When it assigns him his next mission—to assassinate the mayor of New York—it seems at first like business as usual. But then he meets Sam, the mayor’s beautiful daughter. Suddenly, his mission is abruptly changed, and all bets are off. The formerly obedient Boy Nobody begins asking questions that are dangerous to his mission and to himself. Readers may question that a teenager is capable of playing the role assigned to Boy Nobody, but books like these require a suspension of disbelief, and most readers will be willing to make that suspension for the sake of the fast-paced plot and the surprisingly sympathetic protagonist. Operating in the tradition of both James Bond and of Robert Cormier’s I Am the Cheese (1977), Boy Nobody is an auspicious first volume in a promised new series of action-adventure thrillers that will keep readers clamoring for more. Grades 8-12. --Michael Cart

Solid action thriller with a jaw dropping ending!
By Evie Seo
I gotta tell you guys, for the most part I wasn't very impressed with this book. I thought some of the developments were less than likely and requiring a considerable degree of suspension of disbelief. The way the story was unfolding, I was prepared for a cheesy happy ending, a change of the character's heart, some big revelations and eye-opening moments. And I was very surprised when I didn't get any of that. The story went in a totally different direction from what I expected, leaving me with my jaw dropped (in a good way), and the ending itself was actually pretty cool. I am very excited to see where Allen Zadoff will take this story in the next instalment.

Benjamin (it's not his real name, but let's call him that for now) joined The Program when he was only twelve. His parents were killed by the very same people that were now training him to become the perfect assassin. And he's been killing people deemed traitors to the country ever since. I loved learning about the ins and outs of his assignments, the secret codes and encrypted messages. Some of that stuff was pretty cool and clever (like when Ben would explain how he gets new assignments, and what code The Mother and The Father use to tell him when it starts, etc.). I also thought that the idea of a child assassin was both totally ridiculous and kind of brilliant at the same time. The cover stories were great, but I found it a bit hard to believe that a 14 year old kid would be able to kill adults without running into any problems or having second thoughts - especially after being close friends with their children. I frequently rolled my eyes or shook my head at how conveniently things always happened, and how easy it seemed to accomplish missions that were seemingly impossible, but at the same time, I gotta admit, it was pretty thrilling and entertaining.

Zadoff's writing style isn't exactly amazing, but given the nature of the book (a fast-paced action thriller) I guess it's not exactly shocking. Consisting of short, simple sentences (sometimes repeated), Boy Nobody is a bit choppy and tedious to read. The simple sentences and short phrases produce a feeling of speed and swiftly moving action, yes, but they also become boring rather quickly, as there is nothing to contrast them with (no inner monologues, reflections, or lengthy descriptions). Again, I realize that this isn't a melodrama or a character study, but I would have loved to get a better insight into Ben's character. Little to no time is dedicated to his thoughts and feelings, and even when we do get a glimpse of his personality and emotions, there's nothing really there to make us sympathize with him. Or root for him. In fact, he comes across as a cold, calculating killing machine, who follows instructions blindly and (almost) never asks any questions. Personally, I found it very hard to connect with him.

All things considered, Boy Nobody is a pretty good action thriller for fans of Jason Bourne series. Fast-paced, dark and twisty, it's definitely an entertaining read. But if you're looking for a more in depth analysis of a killer, you will probably be disappointed. Most likely you won't find yourself very emotionally involved, either. But hey, it's a fun and quick read, and I don't know about you, but I certainly need a book like that every once in a while. Plus, the ending is incredibly well written and thoroughly surprising, and I do believe that this series has a great potential to grow into something really meaningful, if not ground breaking.

Fast paced and Awesome
By Keystroke Blog
I am the Weapon was intense. It is action packed and fast paced from the first sentence. Boy Nobody, who later adopts the name Ben, is a highly trained solider who lives his life mission to mission. Is he cool? Yes. Is he dangerous? Hell yea. Is he good? Now that right there is the million dollar question.
Throughout the book, Boy Nobody begins to reveal (or rather, remember) things from his past. Things from before he became Boy Nobody. Instead of following his instructions and completing his mission, he goes on a quest for answers, causing a whole lot of craziness in his wake.
One thing that makes me love the book is the relationship story line. I love how Ben and Sam aren't immediately head-over-heels... it feels more real that way. They don't trust each other (for good reason) and they have a lot of great entertaining conversations that drive the story line forward and have real substance.
The ending of the book took me by surprise. Well, I don't know if surprise is the right word, because I expect nothing less than what happened from Boy Nobody... but I certainly didn't see it coming. It broke my heart a little, and my only complaint is it didn't break my heart enough.
I also feel like I am the Weapon would have been a great stand-alone book (besides the whole unresolved mysterious past). I don't really feel compelled to read the second book, which is never exactly a good thing. But at the same time I'm curious, and I expect some pretty big things from I am the Mission.

Review: Boy Nobody
By Kris
The writing is short and concise. I felt as though I was seeing the world through Boy Nobody's thoughts rather than how he experiences it. In a way, this reflects who he is. He's a soldier on a mission. Every time he moves on to the next target, he adopts a new identity, one that allows him to get closer to the mark (who will bring him close to the target). There isn't "somebody" within him to experience the world. At the same time, the narrative style doesn't allow for much detail to be incorporated into the story, and there is a feeling of distance between (1) the reader and Boy Nobody and (2) Boy Nobody and the rest of the world.

Because of the narrative distance, it's hard to relate to Boy Nobody on an emotional level. He notes facts, but he keeps a tight rein on his emotions with almost superhuman control. Even when he lets some opportunities to complete his mission go, he finds excuses for himself resolves to figure out why he can't do what he was sent there to do. The way he acts, it's like he's almost like some form of artificial intelligence. Only, he really is human, and he's finally remembering what it's like to be one.

Here, the plot becomes one we've seen many times. The girl and her father open the boy's eyes to what it means to be human, and he begins to question his life and what he wants to do with it. Sam wasn't quite what I expected. She's beautiful to what seems like model perfection, but she's also kind of a badass, and she's able to confuzzle Boy Nobody, which nobody has done yet. Inside, however, she's fragile when it comes to love, and she's an emotional wreck from her mother's death, her mysterious relationship with her ex, and her father's job. The way she opens up so fast to Boy Nobody is freaky and unexpected. I wish that the story didn't move so fast, but at the same time I understand that it's necessary because of the time limit on Boy Nobody's mission.

What I love the most is the mission side of the story. The way Boy Nobody communicates with his supervisors is interesting and reminds me a little of spy novels--how they have all this crazy gadgetry. Boy Nobody's "gadgets" are more toned down and inconspicuous though, consistent with how his entire life is kept low profile. I also really like the action scenes, especially the ones at the end where he learns the truth about why he was sent to mark Sam.

Not much is revealed about The Program that Boy Nobody works for, which is understandable given Boy Nobody's lack of knowledge about it. During his mission, however, he comes across some startling, though expected, facts that make him further question who he is and what he's doing. It looks like we'll be learning more about The Program and Boy Nobody's role in it with the publication of book two, and I'm curious enough to want to read it.

For the first half of this novel, readers will believe they’re in a tingly thriller. Right off, we meet David as he stands on a train platform. A stranger calls him by name. Just before vanishing, the mystery man whispers, “Remember me.” Jump-cut to John, a New Yorker whose experience in intelligence work is called upon when a friend of a friend asks for help. She’s sure someone is following her, but when she looks back, no one’s there. Some fine scenes, suspenseful and witty, ensue as John and his girlfriend mount their own surveillance. They walk fast, maintaining cell-phone contact, and notice that, yes, someone is tracking their friend of a friend. Odd, though: whoever it is can disappear as quickly as that person on the platform. Here’s where the thriller dead-ends, and the fantasy begins. Or maybe it’s magical realism. Suddenly there’s a new mystery to solve. When the dreamer forgets the dream, does it live on anyway? Readers comfortable with mixing genres will enjoy the ride, while others may want to get off at the first stop. --Don Crinklaw

Another great book by a master of the genre
By MyBookishWays
New York City is a seething and vibrant mass of humanity, and in the shadows, those that are unseen lurk. However, they’re tired of being invisible, and the time has come to do something about that. This is the basis for WE ARE HERE. The book primarily follows John Henderson and his live-in girlfriend, Kristina, and new author David, and his wife Dawn. If you’re familiar with Michael Marshall’s previous work, you’ll recognize John from 2009’s BAD THINGS. John has a bit of a past, and is still reeling from the death of his young son, and his subsequent divorce from his wife and estrangement from his other son. However, he’s happy with Kristina and although it’s clear that they could use some new surroundings, things are good. When Kristina asks John to look into something for her new friend Catherine, the structure of their lives begins to waver. Catherine believes someone is stalking her, and it soon becomes apparent that something untoward is happening. Is it someone from her past? A scorned lover, or a stranger? As John and Kristina investigate, they discover a group of people living on the fringes, or so they think, but they seem like so much more than just forgotten people. They are indeed more, and a man called Reinhart is intent on exploiting them, but to what end?

If it seems as if I’m being vague, there’s a reason for that. I don’t want to give too much away because to do that would be to spoil what makes this novel such a good read. Michael Marshall is a pro at weaving the fantastic with the mundane, and We Are Here is no exception. It’s hard not to get invested with John and Kristina, and by the time you get to the final revelations, you’re thoroughly entrenched in their lives, as well as the lives of David, Dawn, and even the “others.” In fact, the “others” are just as vivid as the main characters, and indeed, Michael Marshall could write an entire book, or books, just about them, easily. Although We Are Here is certainly an effective suspense novel, it’s also about how our lives intersect in myriad ways, on a daily basis, even if we’re not quite aware of these encounters and their consequences. There’s also a bit of observation about how social media has separated us while seeming to bring us closer. Marshall is also very, very good at ramping up the creep factor and although We Are Here is a slow burn infused with creeping dread, the payoff (at least for me) was very worth it. If you haven’t tried anything by Michael Marshall, but enjoy John Connolly’s work, and subtly creepy reads, I urge you to give this one a try.

Some highs, some lows
By tpolen
I really don't know what to say about this book. At times, I was glued to the pages and couldn't wait to see what happened next. Then there were times I skimmed the pages just to get through it.

The "strangers" mentioned in the book description were really beginning to frustrate me because when they spoke to each other, it seemed like a lot of gibberish. I'm all for the author keeping the reader in suspense and not revealing all your cards at once, but after a couple hundred pages, I was ready to find out who or what they were. When their identity was revealed, the concept was rather fascinating when you stop to think about it - a unique idea, to me, at least.

The story rotated viewpoints and, for the most part, it was pretty easy to keep up with who I was reading about in each chapter; however, although I liked the characters in the first part of the book, I had difficulty connecting with them as the story progressed, mostly because of their choices. Despite the unique concept of this book, I felt like the story never went anywhere.

I haven't read any other books by this author but, judging by reviews I've read of his work, his other books are great reads, in particular The Straw Men series. Would I read other books by this author? Absolutely - and I plan on doing so. Would I recommend this book to others? Yes, because I tend to think this book is the type that some people will absolutely gush over, while some will have mediocre feelings about it.

WE ARE HERE is a book that will stay with you beyond its cataclysmic ending
By Bookreporter
You never know where Michael Marshall is going to take you. Just when you think you have things in hand, a grasp of where they are headed, he takes you down a totally unexpected path that upends all of your suppositions. His books make demands; more often than not, one has to pass the guard at WTF before entering the land of OMG to get a grasp of what is going on. Still, the reader’s patience is always ultimately rewarded. That has never been more true than in WE ARE HERE, his latest novel.

Before we begin, let me provide you with a couple of warnings, one major and one minor. The minor warning is that WE ARE HERE features a character who was a primary protagonist in Marshall’s 2009 novel, BAD THINGS. But you do not have to be familiar with the latter work to enjoy his new title. The major warning is that if you spend even part of your existence wondering if people --- even total strangers --- are conspiring against you, following you, observing you, or otherwise meddling in your life, WE ARE HERE is going to tap right into that vein and mainline a boost to you. Oh, here’s another: Marshall wastes no time disorienting the reader, going in quick succession from a man on the run who meets his fate in a rundown rural motel room to an unsettling encounter in Penn Station between David, a soon-to-be-published fledgling author, and a stranger who is vaguely familiar.

At the same time, a former attorney turned bartender/waiter named John and his edgy lover, Kristina, agree to do a favor for Catherine, a member of Kristina’s book group. Catherine has the uncomfortable feeling that she is being followed, or watched, or something. John, whose previously acquired skill set includes some surveillance techniques, agrees to shadow her and discovers that she is being watched by someone who is perhaps best characterized as...insubstantial. This leads John to a well-intentioned clergyman, a group of people who exist on the fringes of society (and possibly of existence), and an extremely dangerous character who makes no bones about warning John away. This, of course, is like waving a cape in front of a bull, as far as John is concerned, particularly when he and Kristina begin receiving messages written on the window of their fifth story flat in Greenwich Village.

While this is developing, David is trying, without any success at all, to write the follow-up to his soon-to-be-published novel, all the while keeping a secret from his pregnant wife, Dawn. However, the stranger David encountered in Penn Station keeps turning up, and suddenly he remembers --- or thinks he remembers --- who this individual is.

You might ask if there is a link between these very disparate storylines. Yes, there is, one that even includes that relatively short but memorable vignette in the motel room. The answer would give away the carefully constructed farm that Marshall has built, and I don’t want to do that. Let us say for our purposes that it covers everything from the perceptions of children to religion to emotional disturbances and beyond. Oh, and if you are looking for explosions and fisticuffs, there is a bit of that here as well.

The result is a work that defies easy genre classification. Is it a thriller? Indeed. But it’s also a mystery and perhaps a horror novel, with a New Age element or two tossed in. While WE ARE HERE is at times a challenging book to follow, it is one that will stay with you beyond its cataclysmic ending.

BEING THERE THRU THE CAMERA LENS
By Coral Leigh
This is THE most unforgettable view of the first days of the then called "Police Action" in Korea. Author Duncan lived with the men and portrayed all the comraderie, terror and fear that they did. His work makes an indelable image in our mind & is easy to grasp the magnatude of it. My now deceased husband was one of those young Marines and one of the walking wounded who lived in pain his whole life. He treasured this book and knew the subjects. He found it a way to bury his emotions and go on with a "normal" lifestyle. This book had to help Truman change and understand it was not a simple mop-up action....but This WAS War! Although out of print, my family is trying to get copies to pass on to their children to help us better understand their father. It is especially appropriate at this time when attention is being given the Korean Conflict's 50th anniversary. I wish they would reprint it and distribute a copy to all high school and college libraries.

Photos of the Forgotten War
By Marco Antonio Abarca
This book was originally published in 1951 on the one year anniversary of the onset of the Korean War. Life Magazine photographer David Douglas Duncan was working in Tokyo when the war began. Within a few days, he was taking photographs on the rapidly changing front line. This book is a compilation of combat photos that he took during the first few months of the war. There are many memorable photos of battles around the Pusan Perimeter, the return to Seoul and the epic retreat from the Chosin Reservoir.

Duncan was a Marine combat veteran of the Second World War. His connection to the Marines on the ground is shown in the remarkable empathy of his photographs. Duncan was not afraid to get up really close to the combat. His close up portraits of exhausted Marines during the Chosin retreat are some of the most memorable images of the Korean War. This is a work of not only remarkable war photography but also of portraiture. If that were not enough, the text that accompanies the photographs is also a great example of combat reportage. This is an excellent book and I give it my highest recommendation.

From Publishers Weekly
Combining brief fictionalized accounts of historical events with factual information, profiles of notable women and men, and related projects, these titles adopt a playful approach to teaching American history. Revolution describes life in the 13 colonies and the road to independence, including the Boston Tea Party, the winter at Valley Forge and the Battle of Yorktown. The hands-on sections include a play about the Boston Massacre, a game in which players take on the roles of a customs officer and a smuggler, and a recipe for "Old Glory Ice Cream." Biographies of Phillis Wheatley and Thomas Paine, as well as sections on pirates, secret codes and an early submarine, round out an already comprehensive volume. Less focused, American Indians explores the legends, traditions and customs of the many tribes that made their homes in what is now the United States. Various spreads are devoted to coming-of-age ceremonies, Hopi architecture, the whale hunts of the Makah and other topics. Activity ideas range from weaving baskets to making spirit figures and playing traditional games. The snappy, fast-paced lessons are short enough to whet the appetite without being overwhelming; lists of books and videos and information about visiting historic sites are appended. Ages 8-12.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-Two entries in a series that takes a variety-store approach to specific events and people in American history. Indians focuses on various tribes (Quinault, Maidu, Hopi, Paiute, Crow, Iroquois, Cherokee) and geographic areas, and introduces important legends, beliefs, and ceremonies. The book also includes intriguing projects, games, recipes, and first-person accounts. Revolution offers short chapters on events leading up to and including the war, along with sidebars of historical trivia, plays for readers to act out, art projects, and other activities. Readers get glimpses of the hard life of British soldiers; important people (e.g., Daniel Boone, Benjamin Franklin, Phillis Wheatley); and events (the Boston Tea Party and the Battles of Lexington and Concord, among others). These fine resources are written in a chatty but authoritative style and illustrated with black-and-white drawings, diagrams, and sketches. Teachers will discover many new ways to bring history alive, while students will get hooked on the fascinating tidbits of information. Each title ends with an "If you want to know more" section that describes books, videos, historic sites, and projects. Interesting, exciting presentations.
