Review
"Patterson's Kill Alex Cross is thriller with family at its heart...It's Patterson at the top of his game...Patterson is presenting three different families--Cross's, the terrorists' and President Coyle's--each with its own darkly parallel definitions of justice, loyalty and love. Underneath the fast-and-furious action, Patterson is exploring what it means to be a father, a man and, ultimately, a human being in an increasingly complex and dangerous world."―Lisa Scottoline, Washington Post

The worst one ever
By David Winograd
I have been a constant reader of every Alex Cross book since the beginning and am a major fan.
They are usually exciting and great entertainment for a few hours. I really look forward to them.

But then comes this stinker.
The plot seems like cheap cardboard. I was one step ahead of every twist and I'm usually far from that good.
The character development was nil.
The home backstory that I always enjoy was reduced to tossing in a random girl, a hardly filled out charter school and leaving it at that.

Alex, who is brilliant, bumbled his way through the book and the villain, who doesn't hold a candle to Kyle Craig or even Gary Seneji, is reputed to be really smart and Alex can't get a take on him. I didn't buy it for a minute.

The terrorist villains were even more cardboard.

It seemed to me that this was the sort of outline that Patterson would give to one of his factory workers to turn it into something palatable. The major plot points were there, but the color was sorely missing.

Maybe Patterson is trying out a new marketing strategy of a series of "write your own Alex Cross book" since that what this one seemed to me. It was nothing more than notes for a potentially good book.

Alex seemed weak and nasty.
Nana seemed even too strident for her usual over-the-top portrayal.
The kids got short shrift.
Sampson was there for as place holder.

We deserve better.
Lots better.

The last few books I have read were all missing something. When I picked up my first James Patterson book I could not put it down. The story lines were great. Each chapter begged you to read the next. Now I think that Mr. Patterson is writing too many books too fast. They all start out strong but seem to fizzle in the end. I am not so eager to run out and purchase his next book. I really enjoyed reading his books and now feel very disappointed. So I ask respectfully, please slow down.

Almost - time for a new direction?
By J.C.Coles
Almost, in that much like THE TRIAL, which I read not long ago, KILL ALEX CROSS threatens to be excellent but only manages to be average at best. As with THE TRIAL the subject matter is engrossing and the storyline potentially epic but somehow just not given the full justice it deserves. I felt that a lot of the story was just skimmed over and the reader was left to make up the detail themselves. The President's children being kidnapped and an impending terrorist attack are dealt with by Alex as if he is taking a walk in the park rather than dealing with two national emergencies at once. Even the violence seems to have been thinned out and lacking in any emotional intensity.

Another reviewer said that they couldn't put their finger on what was missing, I think I can, time and effort. Patterson's chapters seem to have got shorter and shorter to the point of ridiculousness. I think this is more to add page numbers to the novels than a ploy to speed up the pace. It seems that quantity may have replaced quality, which is backed up by the number of co-writers Patterson seems to be working with.

I love the Alex Cross character and series but found this just didn't make the grade I'm afraid. Maybe it's time for a new direction? Either that or add another 100 pages and fill in the blanks!

Winner of the 2016 PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing

The true story of the game that never should have happened--and of a nation on the brink of monumental change

In the fall of 1943, at the little-known North Carolina College for Negroes, Coach John McLendon was on the verge of changing basketball forever. A protégé of James Naismith, the game's inventor, McLendon taught his team to play the full-court press and run a fast break that no one could catch. His Eagles would become the highest-scoring college team in America--a basketball juggernaut that shattered its opponents by as many as sixty points per game. Yet his players faced danger whenever they traveled backcountry roads.

Across town, at Duke University, the best basketball squad on campus wasn't the Blue Devils, but an all-white military team from the Duke medical school. Composed of former college stars from across the country, the team dismantled everyone they faced, including the Duke varsity. They were prepared to take on anyone--until an audacious invitation arrived, one that was years ahead of anything the South had ever seen before. What happened next wasn't on anyone's schedule.

Based on years of research, The Secret Game is a story of courage and determination, and of an incredible, long-buried moment in the nation's sporting past. The riveting, true account of a remarkable season, it is the story of how a group of forgotten college basketball players, aided by a pair of refugees from Nazi Germany and a group of daring student activists, not only blazed a trail for a new kind of America, but helped create one of the most meaningful moments in basketball history.

Review
"As a member of the Duke community, I have long been aware and proud of the secret game. Now Scott Ellsworth has brought it to light. The true story behind this extraordinary, long-buried game goes beyond any one school or any one state. The Secret Game is a triumphant look at how basketball has broken down barriers, and helped create a new kind of America. Every citizen needs to know this story--and to know it now."―Mike Krzyzewski, head coach of Duke Men's Basketball

"There is a basketball on the cover, but this is much more than a story about basketball. Yes, there was a ground-breaking basketball game played in Durham, N.C., seven decades ago, and it is recounted in great detail by Scott Ellsworth. But what we really have here is indispensable social history. White people need to read this book. People of color need to read this book. Whoever you are, you need to read this book."―Bob Ryan, Boston Globe, ESPN, author of Scribe: My Life in Sports

"A powerful book that is a page-turner from start to finish.... Ellsworth has written an important book that should appeal to people of all colors."―Bob D'Angelo, Tampa Tribune

"A fascinating new work of cultural and sports history.... Through a mixture of oral history and archival research, Ellsworth captures the rich human details of a whole generation of largely forgotten basketball players."―Nick Romeo, Boston Globe

"It would be difficult, if not impossible, for me to overstate my admiration for Scott Ellsworth's magnificent The Secret Game. It's a book about race, a book about the South, a book about America, a book about the '40s, a book about change as well as how things remain the same. This is one of the smartest and most eloquent books I've come across in a long time. A masterpiece."―Steve Yarbrough, author of The Realm of Last Chances

"A historian with the soul of a poet, Ellsworth offers a remarkably nuanced, vibrant, and eloquent account of life in the South during WWII, and his portraits of the principal players in this secret drama are multitextured and complex."―Wes Lukowsky, Booklist (starred review)

"Ellsworth has unearthed a brave moment in basketball, forgotten to history, which resonates far beyond the court."―Billy Heller, New York Post

"Scott Ellsworth has unearthed the facts of this little-known but hugely important moment. His research is as overwhelming as his story-telling style is accessible and engaging. If you love basketball, truly love the game and all that it means in terms of this country and its civil rights history, you'll want to read and reread The Secret Game."―Roland Lazenby, author of Michael Jordan: The Life

"Ellsworth skillfully puts this story in the context of World War II, which forced this country to face -- albeit slowly -- its unjust treatment of those who also spilled blood to protect American democracy. He lets us know what happened to each of the players after the secret game -- their lives and their triumph no longer lost or forgotten."―Cliff Bellamy, The Herald Sun

"Riveting."―Kevin Nance, Chicago Tribune

"Amazing."―Robert Gray, Shelf Awareness

"Beautifully paced, its eloquence cloaked within a common touch."―Jeff Calder, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

"A compelling story about basketball, race and transformation...."―D.G. Martin, Winston-Salem Journal

"[The Secret Game] should be read by anyone with an interest in basketball history, or American sports history. Or maybe even American history for that matter."―Bill Reynolds, Providence Journal

"Ellsworth tells their story in the vein of Seabiscuit and The Boys in the Boat.... He reminds us who heroes are and what they can be."―Daniel Solzman, The Kentucky Democrat

"Ellsworth chronicles a groundbreaking matchup....He weaves 50 years of story lines...[and] the takeaway is the unimaginable bravery of both teams."―Lisa Sorg, Indy Week

"Mesmerizing.... An elegant, deeply talented writer."―Jennifer Conlin, frequent contributor to the New York Times

"Engrossing..."―Chris Skaugset, The Daily News

"A riveting, little-known story reminding readers of a rising generation of risk-takers who fought against Jim Crow laws and ushered in the Civil Rights Movement."―Genesis Jackson, Duke Today

This is the best historic story ever about basketball. This secret game in Durham NC between a black college team and the Duke white team of former players attending Duke Medical School is revolutionary for initiating a break in racial barriers. The black college, called the North Carolina College for Negros, was coached by one legendary coaches of all time, Coach McClendon, whose mentor as a student at the University of Kansas was James Naismith, the inventor of the game of basketball.

I liked The Secret Game by Scott Ellsworth. I learned about the history of: basketball, basketball teams in white and black colleges. This is a very interesting book. It is a good mix of the sport of basketball and the coaches & players of the highlighted colleges. It is an interesting book if you like sports history, basketball and/or black history.

I enjoyed all of it
By T. Wasow
A fascinating story of the racism that was part of American life in the first half of the twentieth century. The book consists of a collection of stories only loosely connected by their connection to the basketball game that gave the book its title. I enjoyed all of it, but was slightly disappointed that the various threads were not more tightly connected.

The Beatles Lyrics: The Stories Behind the Music, Including the Handwritten Drafts of More Than 100 Classic Beatles SongsFrom Little, Br

The definitive book of Beatles songs, shown as first written by their own hands and put into authoritative context, for the 50th anniversary of the Beatles coming to America.

For the Beatles, writing songs was a process that could happen anytime -- songs we all know by heart often began as a scribble on the back of an envelope or on hotel stationery. These original documents have ended up scattered across the world at museums and universities and with collectors and friends. Many have never been published before. More than 100 songs and lyrics are reproduced in THE BEATLES LYRICS, providing Hunter Davies a unique platform to tell the story of the music.

The intimacy of these reproductions -- there are sections crossed out and rewritten, and words tossed into the final recordings that were never written down -- ensures that THE BEATLES LYRICS will be a treasure for musicians, scholars, and fans everywhere.

Review
"Rich with insider authenticity. To paraphrase Walt Whitman, Mr. Davies was the man, he suffered, he was there.... The book itself-with Mr. Davies's expert guidance-gives us a glimpse into genius. No better monument could mark the 50th anniversary of the Beatles arrival in America, nothing, that is, short of coming up with a hitherto lost scrap of paper with a Beatles lyric on it, wittily doodled on."―Alexander Theroux, Wall Street Journal

"Beatles expert Hunter Davies demonstrates that the Fab Four wrote their songs just about anywhere--many began as a scribble on the back of an envelope, on a napkin, or on hotel stationery. The collection reproduces more than one original manuscript, granting the reader an all-access look behind the music."―Henry L. Carrigan Jr., Publishers Weekly

"A fascinating, intimate glimpse into the creative process behind some of the greatest pop songs ever written."―Christian Science Monitor

"A stunning collection."―BookPage

A "chatty, knowledgeable, readable account of the back stories behind all the Beatles lyrics."―The Seattle Times

"An unprecedented glimpse into the true genius of the band."―Alan Petrucelli, Examiner.com

"This tome still finds some fresh ground to break and observations to make for diehard and casual fans alike, often derived from their handwritten words."―Bob Ruggiero, Houston Press

The book on the lyrics to The Beatles' songs is a job well done by Hunter Davies and joy to have and read.
By groei@xs4all.nl
I read the book on Beatles' lyrics today, oh boy.
.
And I like it.
.
The layout and size of this book is similar to Hunter Davies' book 'The John Lennon Letters', this means little less than 400 pages, in a mid-size hardcover book with reader friendly but old fashioned typography. The layout similarity is especially noticeable in the way the content of the manuscript photographs is repeated in the text body, as in the `Lennon Letters' book this works very well here. The images provide a glimpse of a Beatles' activity in the past, writing on a piece of paper; the words reproduced in the text-body are presented for contemplation and analysis and for you to hear the words thru voices and music sounding in the hallways of your mind.
.
Davies presents approximately 120 reproductions of song transcripts. Sometimes these were scraps of paper on the studio-floor from 1966/7 Hunter Davies took with him, when he had the privileged position of closeness to the boys while working on his authorized biography, others are nuggets from antiquarian shops, published in auctions catalogues or from unnamed friends. Hunter even had the opportunity to ask the boys for handwritten lyrics of songs he said he wanted to write about in the biography. Manuscripts of lyrics are even re-handwritten after the actual process of composition and recording was finished. Davies presents pictures of these little manuscripts and we are lucky, he adds pictures of e.g. Beatles' summer activities for 1966, the 'Being for the benefit of Mr. Kite'-poster, contracts, concert programs, etc.
.
Some of these manuscripts reveal the development of the lyrics, occasionally this info is unique and a first. The revealed perspectives are sometime funny as with Maxwell's Silver Hammer, sometimes illustrative for the creative process e.g. Old Brown Shoe and 'It's Only Love', and for the Beatles' Sherlock in us, handwriting can raise doubts on who composed what, check out for this e.g. Don't Pass Me By (?). From the handwritten corrections in the manuscripts we get a perspective on the development of songs and the quality and (un-)intended or meanings of lyrics. E.g. the word 'naughty' in "naughty girl you let your knickers down" from John's 'I Am The Walrus' was first considered by John to be a 'lucky' girl; yeah right, what else.
.
The three pillars of a song, whether from Schubert, Lennon and McCartney, or Dylan are words, voice and music/sound. Davies' discussion of 'Here, There and Everywhere' illustrates this perfectly well and simultaneously confirms the high respect of the song in The Beatles' catalogue. Other manuscripts suggest that in the process of composition and recording music and the singing, the meaning of words and lines become secondary to the overall sound, as they change words for musical reasons and we see how the meaning of the lyric changes significantly or shifts the perspective 'from me to you'.
The lyrical change from 'lucky girl' to 'naughty girl', in John's 'I Am The Walrus', creates a punchier improved rhyme (naughty and knickers) and adds a bite perfectly fitting Lennon's singing Beatles' rock music, yet it also changes the meaning. The 'lucky' puts Lennon in a position of: 'Hey girl you're lucky to get attention from ME because your knickers are down', making her grateful for his sexual prowess. The 'naughty' transfers the sexual initiative to the girl and puts Lennon in the position of the innocent male who is willing to be seduced. In sixties-thinking this makes the girl more slutty than it does in England today.
There are terrific risks you are obliged to take as an artist. 'All songs about relationships between men and women are (potentially) accusable of sexism. Every great writer and artist, who has tackled relationships and sexism has been accused of sexism - Jane Austen was accused of sexism', Christopher Risk said a few years ago in a conversation with Sean Wilentz.
The same goes for religious stuff. Any fan of The Beatles knows, John was accused of blasphemy or worse more than once. In the review of 'The Ballad of John and Yoko' Hunter Davies offers considerations that the line 'they're gonna crucify me' was 'ridiculous', 'total paranoia' or even 'delusional' - and then he writes that 'in a sense, that is what happened to him in the end...'. Now that seems to be too far gone, the journalist Davies is obliged to rise above the public's stupid mythical point of view and make smarter interpretations. The verb 'crucify' does have more meanings than criminals getting death penalty by crucifixion on a wooden cross, there is really more than the literal interpretation of the verb 'crucify'. But, hey Hunter Davies was the biographer, so maybe he knows john better than anyone of us - the potential buyers of his book.
.
Davies does not claim know the truth, he doesn't brag either and his writing appears to be very relaxed. He doesn't wanna get you in the end. He observes and presents comments and interpretations as such. Even though on a rare occasion he elevates an opinion and judgment to the level of truth and reality, as in his suggestion the lyrics to 'Paperback Writer' "don't in fact have a lot of logic to them", he presents this as a fact, but it is only his opinion, his way of interpreting this piece of art without considering his interpretation might be irrelevant or even misplaced. The good thing is Hunter Davies describes, explains and provides arguments, which is what a annotator should do. I really like his honesty when he admits he totally missed out on the song 'Rain', at the time.
.
There are a few relevant negatives about the book. I dislike the paper that is used. The quality of the printed pictures are greyish bland and often boring, they lose their potential power and become e/affectless on the reader. Hunter Davies presents almost all The Beatles' songs, yet he leaves out the Anthology collection, on the other hand for the sake of (not so) completism songs are included about which Davies doesn't have a lot to say. I think there a bit too many handwritten lyrics that were produced when the creative process of composition and recording was already way back in the past, I wonder: 'are we still living in the times of idolatry?'
.
As with the 'Lennon Letters' these images of manuscripts and the discussion of them are a joy to have, when one doesn't have the money to buy memorabilia. As such this book is a valuable contribution to the vast amount of books discussing the art of The Beatles.
.
Please be aware this is not THE most complete, nor is it the final book that reviews and discusses creative processes and the artistic results of the Beatles as composers, musicians and performers, but Hunter Davies provides a contribution to that end that should not be ignored.
I do hope this book challenges other authors to dig deeper into the creative process of composition by The Beatles.
.
So click on thru and buy the book.

"THE FURTHER WE GET FROM THEM, THE BIGGER THEY BECOME." HUNTER DAVIES.
By Stuart Jefferson
Yes, I know, another book on The Beatles' songs/lyrics. But this one is a bit different. The author, Hunter Davies, the only person to write an authorized biography, and knew the Beatles personally, has collected many of the still existing scraps, envelopes, napkins, and other pieces of paper with lyrics written (and sometimes scribbled quickly) for many of the band's songs. Along with that he also includes his own observations and memories of the period. Davies' last book was a collection of John Lennon's letters that revealed a different side of Lennon/The Beatles, and this new book does a bit of the same kind of thing from a different vantage point.

Many (most) of the hand written lyrics included (100+) have been gathered from many sources. This is the first time that these original pieces have been tracked down and collected. Is this a book for someone with only a passing interest in The Beatles and/or reading/seeing the lyrics in the original forms? No. This book is for a deep fan of The Beatles, someone who liked the Lennon letters collection for instance. Davies gives these lyrics a foundation from his personal knowledge of the group--what they were doing at the time, what was going on around them, their thought process, and in some cases, how the original lyrics changed at recording time.

The chapters are laid out with titles like "Love Me Do", "With The Beatles", "A Hard Day's Night", "Beatles For Sale", "Help!", "Rubber Soul", "Revolver", "Strawberry Fields", and so on. Included are many photos from the various periods in the band's life, posters, ads, and of course reproductions of the lyrics themselves in their original written form. Some of these are virtually illegible so the lyrics are printed next to the originals. Also included is a twenty-five page Introduction, Discography, Bibliography, and an Index.

This book is more than just a collection of lyrics. With Davies' insights of the era we get a deeper look into the many songs included here. Before I started going through this book, I was pretty certain that this book was just another "Beatles book". But I was wrong. This is worth reading or just browsing through for the Beatles fan who wants to get a bit closer to the band through Davies observations and memories. This book is also available with a different red cover from the British publisher.

Great book! (PURCHASED ELSEWHERE due to Amazon vs Hachette)
By T. M. Monroe
Great book. Not any real revelations since so much has already been written about the Beatles and their writing. However, it's good to have a nice single volume that collects many photos of the actual handwritten song manuscripts along with the narrative commentary by Davies.

Purchased somewhere else though because of the IDIOTIC embargo that Amazon has placed against Hachette Book Group due to Amazon's dispute with Hachette. Amazon claims it will take up to 3 weeks for this book when it is readily available elsewhere for not much more than Amazon's currently listed price of $31.50(MSRP $35.00)

A fresh new perspective.
By SharksFan
Received the book last night and began to finger through it's pages, planning to savor it until the April release of volume eight, but ended up reading it all in one sitting. Some of you will be disappointed by the fact that two of the stories were covered in the anime adaptation, but I hardly see reason for it. If you read any of the other volumes that had anime featured content and enjoyed them for the little details or added bit of dialog and perspective then you'll be sure to here as well. If there was one thing I WAS slightly disappointed with it was the discontinuation of the just jackets. The new American artwork wasn't quite to my taste, but it helped to keep the artwork I do enjoy clean and would have served to protect it from a stray water droplet or two in the event of such a thing. But such things can be bought and so I won't take away from the product score due to it.

The first story is the longest of the three and what for most will be new content taking place a few centuries before Lawrence's time. It follows a somewhat forced journey between a young and naive boy named Klass, who thinks he has things figured out, and an almost bewilderingly unaware girl named Aryes. It is read from Klass's perspective and seems to match up well with the mindset of a ten year old boy. Later on Holo is introduced and seems much her usual self, though it reveals just how deceptive and malicious she can really be when her companions can't keep pace with her plans. It shows her responsible, almost sisterly side, but it shows quite a bit of her irresponsible side too when she takes things a bit far.

The second story is one you've most likely partaken in already, but that doesn't mean you should stop the book there. Lawrence and Holo have agreed to continue their journey past the town of Pazzio with the excuse of Holo's debt keeping them tied together. But before they leave, Lawrence has matters to attend to. You'll read about a trip to your favorite cambist, some shop and trade, and enjoy the subtext that comes with reading instead of watching.

The third story, although gone over before, is probably my favorite of the three. The celebratory dinner with Norah the shepherdess. Reading it from Holo's perspective is really an enlightening experience into the character and her way of thinking. You learn far more from it than watching in my opinion. There are times when you might think she's set a trap for the unsuspecting Lawrence, but if this chapter serves as a good example for the others, than such is not the case. While she DOES set traps and make sport of him it doesn't always seem to be the object of the game. If you read this chapter you'll be guaranteed to close the book with a smile.

All in all anyone who loves the series will buy and read this book cover to cover without a second thought when it comes down to it. Many won't even bother to read any of these reviews because they know what they're getting into at this point. But for those of you who do bother to read this, do yourself a favor and keep picking up the books even if you think you know what's inside. Within it's pages will always be a familiar friend and a malicious smile.

Wrong description, amazing story.
By Stephen K
Amazon has the wrong description for the book but it IS book 7 of the light novel. Here is what the real description on the back of the book is.

"In a break from Lawrence and Holo's ongoing adventures, author Isuna Hasekura presents Side Colors, a series of short vignettes focusing on the series' favorite characters."

Anyways, just finished reading it this morning and loved it! Great addition to the series!

Side Colors is a series of fun short stories
By Kevin
Side Colors is volume 7 in the Spice and Wolf NOVEL series (NOT MANGA). There are 3 short stories - the first is ~120 pages and the other two are ~40 pages each. The first story takes place before the Spice and Wolf main story (pre-Lawrence). It is told through Holo's point of view as she meets some young traveler's and journeys with them for a short time. The second was actually adapted into the Spice and Wolf anime. It is about Holo and Lawrence buying clothes and exchanging money. The third story was also adapted into an anime special. Holo, Lawrence, and Norah have dinner, but Holo falls ill and Lawrence has to take care of her.

Overall, nothing in the main story arc has advanced. This book was just a series of side stories and little snippets the author decided to write. In the ending word from the author, he says that the main reason for writing this book was to give some stories from Holo's perspective for a change from the main story, where it is all from Lawrence's perspective. If you have already watched the anime, this book is a little disappointing because you will know two of the three stories. Nonetheless it is still a fun read if you are a fan of the series.

If you have been keeping up with the novel releases, you'll be happy to know the publisher, Yenpress, has decided to once again increase production speed. Their goal is to release a new book every 4 months or so. So, Volume 8, which will continue the main story, releases in April, 2013. Quickly following it is volume 9 which will be released in August.

More than coloring~
By Steven H.
This "doodle book" differentiates itself from the usual coloring books. It lives up to the doodle book name by including plenty of drawing activities (and of course a ton of coloring to be done), but it adds a lot of wonderfully creative activities. In addition to the usual matching or maze games you'll find in most coloring books, this one includes activities for your kids do to, such as...
- designing their own creatures or monsters
- writing their own song and lyrics for the talent show
- writing a story for the Foal Free Press school newspaper
- designing clothing (like Rarity's giant hats)
- helping Miss. Cheerilee with a lesson plan (my favorite)
- writing their own letters to Princess Celestia

In all it's much more engaging than a simple coloring book and far more enjoyable for it. Hours of fun to be had being creative with your kids and, of course, coloring with them! :)

Whenever Roman architect Lucius is suddenly submerged in water, he always surfaces to find himself in the land of the "flat-faces," a people whose appreciation for the public bathhouse matches that of even the mighty Romans! (Little does he realize that the land of his watery journeys is in fact the Japan of 1,500 years in the future!) Observing the strange practices of these foreigners has allowed Lucius to revolutionize the Roman bathhouse, and public opinion on his innovations-and on Aelius Caesar, the emperor-to-be to whom these marvels are attributed-soars. But those in the Senate maintain strong reservations about the suitability of the emperor-to-be, and they mean to cut off the flow of support at its source-Lucius!

Thermae Romae Second Volume: A New Character and a Few Changes
By T.NAKAJIMA
Amusing time-travelling adventures of a Roman bath architect Lucius Modestus continue in the second volume of Mari Yamazaki's "Thermae Romae," which is actually the third and fourth volumes of the Japanese edition. In Japan the hit series is complete in six volumes, which means we are going to have one more volume in English from the publisher Yen Press.

The first half of the second volume of Yen Press' "Thermae Romae" (that is, the third volume of the original) follows the pattern of the series so far, but with each episode longer than in the previous volume. Again, dead serious Lucius travels in time back and forth between ancient Rome and modern-day Japan, but spends more time there, even helping out a young Japanese architect in trouble.

In the first episode Lucius is whisked away to a Japanese traditional onsen (spa town), where he marvels at the curious "innovations" of the "flat face" clan, or Japanese people. To Japanese readers, the way Lucius reacts to a variety of things and customs at an old spa town is amusing, but I'm afraid some of the fun might be lost on those who have not been to onsen, Japanese cultural staple.

In the second half the story takes a surprising turn. Without spoiling much, I will say that there is a significant change in narrative structure. In short, the second half of the book is not exactly about the bath culture of the Roman Empire or Japan. Also, a new character, a young Japanese woman named Satsuki, is introduced, a "flat face" who can communicate with Lucius.

I have a mixed feeling about the change. While the comic remains entertaining, the new character (with her long back story) doesn't fit in with the storyline so far. Let's wait and see what happens in the third and final volume of "Thermae Romae."

Educational & Fun for Baby & Parents!
By Jennifer Juday
MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS is a simple, fun book. There are two pages for the numbers one through ten. The first page shows the number, with the name of the number in English and Spanish. On the facing page is a picture, with as many instances of that object as go with the number.

The illustrations in MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS are spectacular. They look as if they were made using cutouts of construction paper, and combine overall simplicity with some fascinating detail. For example, for the number one the illustration is of a salamander with little round ends to his toes. My son puts his finger out and traces over the shapes with fascination. Each of the ten illustrations is excellent.

My 10-month old son loves MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS. It is one that he will pull out of the book basket and look at at on his own. A good friend of mine, an artists and former teacher, loves it. Her 2 year old son also enjoyed reading this book, enough that we read it over and over when I recently babysat him. I am also enjoying MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS as a way to brush up on a bit of my Spanish.

The vocabulary: 1 salamander, 2 leaves, 3 strawberries, 4 hearts, 5 carrots, 6 snakes, 7 stars, 8 bumblebees, 9 ladybugs, and 10 butterflies.

This whole series is plagued with errors
By Ellen G
This whole series is useless. Each of the books has words that are translated incorrectly, and/or are plain poor choices (such as selecting items that have different regional names in different Spanish-speaking countries).

For example, in this book, "Salamander" is translated as "Lagartija". Really? The Spanish word for Salamander is "Salamandra" ("lagartija" means lizard - which is a reptile - while salamanders are amphibians - totally different groups of animals).

In addition, often there is no gender correspondence between the translation and the selected object. For example, the number "one" is translated as "uno" (which is correct). But then, she chooses a word that is feminine ("La Lagartija", making it "UNA lagartija"). Given that there are thousands and thousands of words in Spanish, why not choose one where both instances of the translation match? Especially since there is no explanation on how nouns in Spanish are associated with a gender (unlike English, where most words are gender neutral).

In the back cover of all this collection, the word "collect" is translated as "recolecta", which would be equivalent to "gather". The correct word would be "colecciona".

In a book that has about 10 words total, and designed to teach a foreign language, these errors are unforgivable.

Woe to Live On: A Novel, by Daniel Woodrell

Set in the border states of Kansas and Missouri, WOE TO LIVE ON explores the nature of lawlessness and violence, friendship and loyalty, through the eyes of young recruit Jake Roedel. Where he and his fellow First Kansas Irregulars go, no one is safe, no one can be neutral. Roedel grows up fast, experiencing a brutal parody of war without standards or mercy. But as friends fall and families flee, he questions his loyalties and becomes an outsider even to those who have become outlaws.

From Publishers Weekly
Narrator Jake Roedel is in his mid-teens when he joins the First Kansas Irregulars in 1861. During the next few years he sees, and commits, more than his share of Civil War atrocities. Most of the action takes place in Kansas and Missouri between the rebel Irregulars (bushwhackers) and the Union Jayhawkers, with some civilians caught in the crossfire. The studiedly cool Jake experiences loss (the deaths of his best friend, father and comrades) and love (the best friend's "widow"); he also learns about tolerance from his contact with a nobly reserved black Irregular. There's plenty of hard riding, drinking and shooting, most of it leading to bloodshed. Jake's loyalty to the "secesh" cause is unquestioning and doesn't quite gibe with his growing unease amid the gore, or with his departure in the midst of the war for Texas with wife and child. The prose is occasionally rather pretentious, but this is a generally enjoyable coming-of-age novel by the author of Under the Bright Lights.

Review
PRAISE FOR WOE TO LIVE ON

"[A] fine novel...Daniel Woodrell has captured the devastation of war and, more importantly, the twisting of men's minds."―United Press International

"The violence is fast and understated, and bawdy humor relieves the story's intensity."―Kansas City Star

"A renegade Western...that celebrates the genre while bushwhacking its most cherished traditions...Jake Roedel recites his tale of woe in an improbably rustic idiom, with a malignant humor and a hip sensibility that are wise beyond his years and way ahead of his times."―Chicago Tribune

"Woodrell pins it down just right...speaks to the universal cruelty of civil war."―St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The war without bugles and banners
By A Customer
Finally and at last, the border war of Missouri/Kansas is having its story told. Here were no magnificent lines of battle with brave banners and an awe-struck foe admiring the fatal advance. Here were no bugle calls, no gold braid uniforms or gentleman officers in plumed hats. This was a dirty, vicious, strange-dogs-in-a-meathouse fight that shattered families, emptied neighborhoods, and sometimes created feuds that lasted generations after the war.
Daniel Woodrell writes with a remarkable style perfectly suited to the tale he tells. Taut, sparse, haunting, lyrical yet terrible, easing us lazily along from moments of unpretentious poetry to drop us jangling into stark, slamming violence. From the first page, I read it as drinking a rare liquor, sipping and savoring only a few pages a day, in no hurry to have it end.
Mr. Woodrell does not rub our faces in gore, but nor does he shrink from or glorify the brutality of killing. We have no doubt of what is happening, recoil from its horror, yet the image is drawn with such spare, severe strokes that we are left stunned as the aftermath of a car wreck - what just happened? When one character dies, the scene is engraved with a laser beam; "Oh, sweet Lord Jesus. It was way down there past terrible....My world bled to death."
Yet rather than being a story about a war and its battles, this a story about very young men - and women - whose lives are turned inside-out by that war. We see them involved in the very human struggle for place, for a sense of belonging, for those fleeting moments of gentleness, set against the smouldering, bloody backdrop of war, and jerked back to the bad-chili burning in the guts for payback when "comrades" are lost.
Rather than merely a war story, it is in part a love story, love of friend for friend, a man for a woman. There is no drippy sentimentality, no saccharine examinations of emotion. The same pen that strokes murder in sharp black lines etches with exquisite delicacy the gentler moments.
The reader may initially find the Victorian dialogue a bit awkard, but in only moments, there seems no other way the story could have been told. Nor do I feel that any other writer could have told this tale so well, save this native son of the Ozark country.
Told through the eyes of young Jake Roedel, who accepts what he sees with no idealism and only later any question, I recommend this book with a whole heart. Most especially I recommend it to those with an interest in the Missouri/Kansas conflict, or any part of the less-defined, personal aspects of the Civil War. For story, characterizations, marvelous use of language, and a haunting quality that lingers long after the last page is turned, I give it a solid five stars.

Riding with the devil
By Selene
"Our mode of war was an irregular one. We were as likely to be guided by an aged farmer's breathless recounting of a definite rumor, or by the moods of our horses, as we were by logic. It was a situation where logic made no sense. So we slouched about in wooded areas, our eyes on main roads and cow paths, watching for our foe to pass in reasonable numbers.
They often did."

The reissue last month of "Woe to Live On", Daniel Woodrell's 1987 coming-of-age novel set during the American Civil War, is cause for celebration. A Missourian born and bred, Woodrell has a dedicated cult following, but, oddly, seems to be better known and appreciated outside the States than within, and has been described as "one of the best-kept secrets in American literature."

As anyone who's discovered Woodrell's long out-of-print "Woe to Live On" and been blown away by it will tell you, Lordy, Lordy, the man can write up a storm!

This is the universal tragedy of civil war, the particular madness of a conflict that pits neighbours, friends and families against each other, as seen through the eyes of Jake Roedel, a teenager fighting with a band of Bushwhackers (mounted Confederate guerillas) in the Kansas-Missouri borderlands. Several of the characters are actual historical figures, like William C. Quantrill, Cole Younger and Senator Jim Lane. Black John Ambrose, the leader of Jake's band, was clearly modelled on "Bloody Bill" Anderson, and Jake's friend, the black freedman, Holt, is a composite of those African-Americans who, surprising as it may seem, did in fact fight with the Confederate raiders.

Politically incorrect, unrevisionist and understated in style, "Woe to Live On" is brutal, shocking and full of random, escalating violence and moral ambiguities. There's no high-flown honour, no good guys and no winners here. It's also sheer crazed, adrenaline-fuelled adventure; the camaraderie and knife-edge exhilaration of war that have drawn many a young man to arms throughout the ages.

Woodrell is heir to a backwoods bardic storytelling tradition that gives "Woe to Live On" a touch of that timeless, dark folkloric/hero quest quality so evident in "Winter's Bone". Its sensibility is pure nineteenth century, though, thanks to the clever use of frontier vernacular that's earned this story the tag "Huck Finn in Hell"; folksy but smart as a whip and spiked with wickedly droll, deadpan humour that lurks, waiting to bushwhack the unsuspecting reader, and serves to leaven Jake's heartbreaking yet ultimately hopeful tale.

"I had us steered toward a new place to live, and we went for it, this brood of mine and my dark comrade, Holt. This new spot for life might be but a short journey as a winged creature covers it, that is often said, but, oh, Lord, as you know, I had not the wings, and it is a hot, hard ride by road."

Verdict? Tragic, disturbing, poignant, picaresque and subversively funny - the work of a truly gifted writer who takes no prisoners.

"Woe to Live On" is a cracker. Here's hoping this time round it gets the wider recognition it deserves.

Note: This novel was the basis of Ang Lee's excellent movie "Ride With the Devil", and the book was released in 1999 as a tie-in edition under the movie's title.

A stunner, again.
By UrbanMonique
There are few writers out there with the impact and intensity that Woodrell packs into his pages. Whatever the genre, he owns it when he writes, as he does so here. Woodrell pulls no punches when he takes on a tale.

So We Read On: How The Great Gatsby Came to Be and Why It Endures, by Maureen Corrigan

Named an "Editors Choice" by The New York Times and a "Best Book of 2014" by Library Journal, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and The Kansas City Star The "Fresh Air" book critic investigates the enduring power of The Great Gatsby -- "The Great American Novel we all think we've read, but really haven't."

Conceived nearly a century ago by a man who died believing himself a failure, it's now a revered classic and a rite of passage in the reading lives of millions. But how well do we really know The Great Gatsby? As Maureen Corrigan, Gatsby lover extraordinaire, points out, while Fitzgerald's masterpiece may be one of the most popular novels in America, many of us first read it when we were too young to fully comprehend its power.

Offering a fresh perspective on what makes Gatsby great-and utterly unusual-So We Read On takes us into archives, high school classrooms, and even out onto the Long Island Sound to explore the novel's hidden depths, a journey whose revelations include Gatsby's surprising debt to hard-boiled crime fiction, its rocky path to recognition as a "classic," and its profound commentaries on the national themes of race, class, and gender.

With rigor, wit, and infectious enthusiasm, Corrigan inspires us to re-experience the greatness of Gatsby and cuts to the heart of why we are, as a culture, "borne back ceaselessly" into its thrall. Along the way, she spins a new and fascinating story of her own.

Review
""So We Read On" abounds in pleasures of the text, whether it is tracing the theme of water in "Gatsby," dipping in and out of Fitzgerald's biography so as to illuminate the novel or the state of mind of the man who wrote it, or ingeniously linking the book's underside -- its "shadowy atmosphere of criminals, bootleggers and violence" -- with a genre of hard-boiled novels and noir films that postdate it."--The New York Times Book Review

". . . entertaining and informative. . . . Corrigan successfully spreads her enthusiasm." Dallas Morning News

"Maureen Corrigan has produced a minor miracle: a book about The Great Gatsby that stands up to Gatsby itself."―Michael Cunningham

"No one is better at bringing a book to life than Maureen Corrigan. Her vividly personal evocation of Fitzgerald and The Great Gatsby is at once a labor of love, the story of a quest, and a mother lode of information and insight. As a biography of a novel, it reads like a novel."― Morris Dickstein, author of Gates of Eden and Dancing in the Dark

"Second only to the pleasure of re-reading Gatsby is the pleasure of talking to someone about it, and Maureen Corrigan is the ultimate someone: boundlessly erudite, blazingly funny, and infectiously passionate. . . . As with the book that inspired it, my only complaint about So We Read On is that it comes to an end."―Susan Choi, author of My Education

"An intoxicating cocktail of talent, celebrity, gangster noir, and the vicissitudes of reputation that create a classic."― Ron Rosenbaum, author of The Shakespeare Wars

"As pleasurable to read as Fitzgerald's. ... It's smart and compelling, persuasive without demeaning other interpretations...a gorgeous treat."―The Washington Post

"We have to be thankful to Maureen Corrigan for letting us in on her intriguing love affairs with great books, as in this wonderful account of her grand passion for The Great Gatsby. She reminds us that perhaps one true promise of that elusive green light at the end of the dock resides in our creative imagination, and the intimate relationship between a book and its reader."―Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lolita in Tehran and The Republic of Imagination

"Corrigan's research was as intrepid as her analysis is ardent and expert, and she brings fact, thought, feelings, and personal experiences together in a buoyant, illuminating, and affecting narrative about one depthless novel, the transforming art of reading, and the endless tides that tumble together life and literature."― Booklist (Starred Review)

"A literary love letter... [Corrigan's] tone is lively and bright and her enthusiasm for the novel is infectious. You'll feel as if you're attending a lecture by your favorite prof or chatting with a brainy, bookish friend. Bursting with intellectual energy and fun facts, this paean to the 'great American novel will appeal to fans of Corrigan's book critiques and Jazz Age scholars, and will, one hopes, impel readers to pick up the brief work for the first (or fourth, or 14th) time."― Library Journal (Starred Review)

"So We Read On is a fine book on many levels, almost too many to list. This book is a love story about a book. It's an expression of love for one of the most lyrical and engaging and prescient novels in the English language. Maureen Corrigan writes not only with passion about her subject, she writes with an understanding of America and the elusive goal represented by the green light on Daisy's dock."―James Lee Burke

Green Light
By Brian Lewis
I have been enthralled with Fitzgerald since my teenage years, over 50 years ago, and expected to enjoy this. And for the most part I did. Dr. Corrigan, who teaches a course on Fitzgerald at Georgetown, knows her subject well and presents it competently. But I feel like she ran out of Fitzgerald material and relied on Corrigan material before the book came to an end. We get too much information about Corrigan and how difficult it was to track down sources or do the research for the book. I felt like I was getting the bibliographic notes section of the book, when I was still in the last chapter. The sections detailed the literary revival of Gatsby and Fitzgerald also seemed inconclusive.

As luck would have it, I have read five "books about books" in the last year or so. If you are similarly inclined, my personal rankings of them would be 1. The World's Most Dangerous Book, (about Joyce's Ulysess) 2. The Empire of Necessity (about Melville's Benito Cereno, 3.) Thomas Paine and the Rights of Man by Christopher Hitchens 4.) So We Read, and 5.) The Zhivago Affair, about Boris Pasternak and the effort to get Dr. Zhivago published.

Enriches THE GREAT GATSBY and those who read it
By Bookreporter
F. Scott Fitzgerald died at age 44, the victim of a turbulent life of alcohol, high living and emotional trauma. Unhappily, at his passing, he was not a revered star of the literary world. What would become his literary bequest to the world, his novel THE GREAT GATSBY, was barely an afterthought in literature. A few years before his death, Fitzgerald sadly discussed the book’s languid literary status in a plaintive letter to his editor, Max Perkins: “I wish it was in print. It will be odd a year or so from now when Scottie assures her friends I was an author and finds that no book is procurable….” Fitzgerald’s funeral would be eerily similar to that of Jay Gatsby --- barely anyone attended.

Today, 90 years after its publication, THE GREAT GATSBY is one of the most read books in the world. It is on the reading list of almost every high school literature class in America and is the one American novel that most educated Americans have read. SO WE READ ON asks why. And while author Maureen Corrigan cannot really answer that, she does offer readers wonderful insight into the life of its troubled author and some suggestions as to why readers seem to be “borne back ceaselessly” into its thrall.

Corrigan is the book critic for NPR’s “Fresh Air” and a professor of literature at Georgetown University. She teaches THE GREAT GATSBY as a labor of love, even going so far as to travel with her students to New York City to experience “the living text of the city.” She believes that Fitzgerald loved the Big Apple as he wrote the book. He had visited there while a student at Princeton and returned after military service. New York City of the ’20s suited his life aspirations. Part of Corrigan’s affinity for the classic work obviously stems from her love of New York. It is an enthralling combination.

For Corrigan, THE GREAT GATSBY is just about perfect, despite going against every expectation of what a Great American Novel should be. Length and plot development are not exhaustive, and the end is fairly predictable. Readers learn the basics of Jay Gatsby’s life but with very little detail. How he earned his fortune can still be debated, although most would attribute his money to some illegal activity. His early romance with Daisy also leaves many unanswered questions. Readers know very little about Nick, the narrator of the story. But perhaps it is the unanswered questions and the brevity of the novel that make it so majestic. It simply does not fit the mold for what most scholars would require of a great novel. It may not be hefty in pages, but it contains some of the most beautiful sentences ever written. Fitzgerald may suggest that the American Dream is a mirage, but his words serve to make it irresistible. The book’s brevity may contribute to its appreciation and greatness in another fashion: readers often return to it to savor its elegant writing once again.

SO WE READ ON discusses not only THE GREAT GATSBY but also its role in culture. Corrigan mentions the novel’s various movie versions. Surprisingly her favorite is the least known: the 1949 version starring Alan Ladd. It interprets the novel as an underworld crime saga as opposed to the more modern films that treat the book as a love story. One of the joys of reading comes from new discoveries. I anxiously await the opportunity to watch the one movie version of THE GREAT GATSBY that I have yet to see.

There is much more to enjoy in Corrigan’s paen to Fitzgerald’s novel. Readers are reminded of his brief Hollywood life and the tragedy that would envelop both him and his wife, Zelda. Corrigan reminds us that many great authors have been “one-hit wonders,” but laments Fitzgerald’s failure to reach his potential as a writer as a loss for literature, as well as a personal one. SO WE READ ON enriches THE GREAT GATSBY and those who read it.

A Brilliant Comprehensive Critique of "The Greatest" American Novel
By Susan Dormady Eisenberg
I'm an F. Scott Fitzgerald buff who rereads THE GREAT GATSBY every couple of years and visits his grave in Rockville, Maryland, as a routine outing, so Maureen Corrigan's comprehensive SO WE READ ON left me breathless as I devoured it twenty-four hours after its September 9th release. It was the GATSBY companion I'd been waiting for...without knowing it. I've always enjoyed Ms. Corrigan's reviews on NPR's "Fresh Air" and now I admire her insightful and accessible prose as she discusses Fitzgerald's elegiac novel from every possible angle. She helped me see this masterpiece with fresh eyes, and now I can't wait to read it again. One surprise she reveals is that Scott Fitzgerald does not garner the respect he deserves at American universities; he doesn't even warrant a seminar devoted solely to his works. I hope professors of literature reverse this trend, so students will read Fitzgerald as they're coming of age in college and not just in their high school years. Like Ms. Corrigan, I learn something new about THE GREAT GATSBY (and myself) each time I reenter Fitzgerald's complex world, and I believe his use of language is unrivaled, both among authors of his generation and our own. Read on, indeed.
