The five most popular students at Noble High have secrets to hide; secrets they wrote down in their journals. Now one of their own exposes the private entries...
When our parents were growing up they were encouraged to make mistakes. That's how they learned. But us? Our mistakes go viral. There is no delete button on the Internet. What kind of future do we have if we can't escape our embarrassing pasts? I must come off as quite the hypocrite; complaining about our overexposed lives in a book of secret journals I have leaked. Solid book 2
By Librarian Laura
I loved the first book (except for the abrupt ending), and I enjoyed this book for the same reason---each character was unique and the author did a great job switching voices to keep them that way.
Some loose ends got tied up in this book while other cans of worms were being opened....a good balance for a series.
Looking forward to book 3.

Never beats the first
By Amazon Customer
For starters I didn't even know this was a series, I just saw the pretenders at a book fair and finished it at work when my heart sunk as I was left with a cliff hanger. I bought this next book right when I got home. That was two days ago. Everyone knows the first book is what gets you started and if it was good enough to get the second, then it'll be the best.
Only reason why I didn't give it five stars, is because I think Sheridan is being too dramatic (even for Sheridan), Jagger is just bugging me, and Vanessa is being annoying over her grades. Other than that, it was fantastic.
Of course it's recommend this, it's way better than I imagined it'd be and it cleared up a lot of questions from three first novel... even if I was left with yet another cliff-hanger.

Excellent service & condition!
By Amazon Customer
My shipment came in about a week and the book was in better condition than I expected it to. It did have library film on it (though I'm sure they specified that in the details) but I just simply removed it and the book looks and feels good as new. I'll definitely come back for more!

And when Erica's mom is diagnosed with breast cancer, she feels worried and doesn't know what she can do to help.

When her family visits a cuarto de milagros, a miracle room in a famous church, Erica decides to make a promesa to God in exchange for her mom's health. As her mom gets sicker, Erica quickly learns that juggling family, friends, school, and fulfilling a promesa is stressful, but with a little bit of hope and a lot of love, she just might be able to figure it out.

From Booklist
López (Confetti Girl, 2009) creates another likable character in Erica “Chia” Montenegro, whose comfortable middle-class life is flipped in an instant when her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. Instead of being able to concentrate on cute boys, her friendly clique (the Robins), and the usual middle-school concerns, Chia is thrust into the role of caregiver to her two-year-old brother and feels additional responsibilities at home, where her younger sister also worries about their mother’s prognosis. When the family visits a cuarto de milagros to pray for help, Chia decides to make a big promesa: surely 500 sponsors for a 5K walk to fight cancer would help heal her mother. Chia’s struggle to keep up with friends, housework, and schoolwork is painfully realistic yet tempered with light touches of humor. The many characters in Chia’s life are individually and lovingly drawn; more than just props in Chia’s story, they have concerns, hopes, and dreams of their own. Readers will feel like Chia’s family and friends could do anything as long as they stick together—and they may be right. Grades 5-8. --Erin Downey Howerton

Young teen dealing with mother's illness
By D. Williams
Diana Lopez's ASK MY MOOD RING HOW I FEEL tells about how Erica (Chia) Montenegro and her family cope when her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. Erica is a middle-school student, so she is certainly old enough to realize that this is a life-changing event for their family, whether her mother goes into remission, then cure, or not. However, she wants what "normal" middle school girls want, particularly fun times with friends and a boyfriend. Her "normal" friends don't understand these mixed emotions; hence, this work's title. Her father becomes very protective of her mother; Erica often takes charge of her younger sibling's care.

Erica and her family are from Texas, so they journey to a shrine in South Texas where many families like hers have sought help. She makes a promesa to the Virgin Mary that she will sign up five hundred people to sponsor her in a Race for the Cure event. Sometimes it seems to Erica that everything is going against her keeping this promise, but she keeps her courage.

Read and see whether - and how - Erica can keep her promesa and how her mother does! Granted, sometimes the answer to prayers and promesas isn't what we want, but at least Erica is making an effort to do some good - if not for her mom, for others.

I found this to be a very honest story of a young girl coping with cancer in her family. The actions, style and word choice are wonderful for the characters and the setting.

Teens who are in a similar situation and their friends will truly appreciate this book and say, "Yes! That's me!" when they see Erica's roller-coaster of emotions.

An excellent book for a preteen/teenage girl
By Rachael D
An excellent book for a preteen/teenage girl. The idea behind it is that she's feeling so many emotions that she needs a mood ring to keep track of all of them. She experiences everything from happiness, to jealousy and even her mom being diagnosed with cancer. She makes a promise to God in exchange for her moms help and this book is a story of her journey to make sense of everything and make it through. Cute story, my child loved it!

A total surprise for me!
By Amazon Customer
Ask My Mood Ring How I Feel was another book I wasn't sure I wanted to read. This wonderful book came with another book that I had requested and I wasn't planning on including it with the Best of 2013 Middle Grade reads until I read it ~ it wasn't at all what I was expecting.

This book opens with your typical, everyday 7th grade, hyper boy vigilent teen ager focused on what all little 7th grade girls are aware of. You have boy/clothes/when am I going to reach the "close encounter of the #1, 2, 3 or 4th degree (involving boys - but you already figured that out right?)" crazy girls (plus one boy in their group who is just starting to be aware of Erica and she hasn't a clue (of course).

But then Erica's life changes - her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. I was very pleased with how the author didn't brush over the subject, worked through Erica's emotions, her dad's worry about his wife and Erica's little sister's almost OCD counting and need to clean. There is a LOT of information, emotions and kids are given some tools they can use with major events in their lives. Most of all I loved how Erica stepped forward and helped around the house - taking care of the cleaning and her little brother as best as a 13 year old can. In many ways she took over much of the organizing of their home - and the resulting consequence would be eye opening for kids & their families.

I was very impressed with this book all around. The only thing I was a little un-impressed about was the parents in the book take the kids to a "shrine" where people make promises to the "Virgen de San Juan del Valle" in order to heal the people in their lives. The parents in the book take the kids there and have their kids make a promesa but of course don't do a good job of making sure the girls understand that nothing they do can heal their mother. Instead of putting their fear and trust in God they turn to promises, the Virgin Mary and works to hopefully heal their mom.

Parents should take the time to read the book first or at least read it with their daughters. Talk about how God is there to support us and while He can heal us sometimes he doesn't choose to. Talk about how we can help others, support and encourage each other and how we can let our friends know we are there if they need us. I would of LOVED to see a list of discussion questions with this book. It's outstanding and should be on each library shelf & in each school.

There is a strong hispanic presence in this book and you'll find some cultural references throughout the book, not just in language, but in religion and this provides a great opportunity to discuss cultural differences and different beliefs and thoughts as well.

Disclaimer: I was offered a copy of the book to read and review on CCB. I was not required to post a positive review and no $ exchanged hands. Thanks for reading CCB!

We've got spirit...
By The Escape Artist
I apologize for the corny title, but who DOESN'T think about the Monster High Fright Song when looking at the cover of this book?!?!?

The doodle book is just that - a full size book full of MH activities, black and white sketches, and other delights for the Monster High fan in your life. This is much more creative than a basic coloring book, and much less fussy (ie: more affordable!) than the dedicated MH fashion sketch and sticker books that can be found in the toy aisle. It's on par with the Scribbles/Doodles line of books by T. Gomi.

The retail price is fairly high, BUT this book is definitely worth the current Amazon asking price (about 45% less than retail). My little ghoul and I purchased the book at Sam's Club for about eight fifty and felt even that was a fair enough price. Really great book for a rainy day, travel, or a just-because gift!

We are always looking for new things for our daughter to do. Her reading and creativity is inspired only by things she really enjoys so I take every opportunity I get to do that. I was thrilled to find this on Amazon, I have never seen it before. It is really cool and so far my daughter has not put it down.

Great buy for hours of summer fun.

"Prove that you can stand against the darkness and live."

In book #4 of the Shadowdance series, Haern is the King's Watcher, born an assassin only to become the city of Veldaren's protector against the thief guilds.
When Lord Victor Kane attacks the city, determined to stamp out all corruption, foreign gangs pour in amidst the chaos in an attempt to overthrow the current lords of the underworld.
And when a mysterious killer known as the Widow begins mutilating thieves, paranoia engulfs the city. Haern knows someone is behind the turmoil, pulling strings. If he doesn't find out who -- and soon -- his beloved city will burn.

A dark, character-driven, gritty fantasy story in the vein of David Gemmell, Brent Weeks and Peter V. Brett
By M. Wanchoo
ANALYSIS: As with the previous three books that have been self published by the author. A Dance Of Shadows was previously reviewed here upon its release. This book is slightly different from its previous incarnation as "Blood Of The Underworld" and I'll try to highlight the non-spoilery changes as much as I can. A note of caution for readers, since this is book 4, there will be minor spoilers for the preceding titles so venture ahead only if you have read the previous books or if you don't mind spoilers.

David Dalglish’s previous books were a revelation for me as it introduced me to the author as well as his dynamic storytelling prowess. The series was supposed to focus on Haern’s origins and explore his need to become the person he is currently. It was a dark and unforgiving series that was tough on all of its characters, ruthless in character deaths and perhaps the author’s homage to Batman's beginnings. The third book however didn’t complete the arc as set by the first book and the author has spoken a bit about it in his guest post "Sequels And Satisfying Endings" over at Fantasy Book Critic.

The trappings of the first trilogy was that a son rebelled against his father’s wishes and that was the underpinning that powered the main character as well as galvanized the readers as they wanted to see how it would end. While the trilogy didn’t exactly end on that note, the current trilogy plays out to that very end. It also serves as a bridge between the Half-Orc series, the Shadowdance trilogy as well as the Paladin series. The main theater of action would be set in the city of Veldaren primarily and also focusing on other regions as per the story dictates. The book also aims to bring together all the characters and infuse the story to make it an explosive one.

The story begins the king of Veldaren receiving a letter of intent from Victor Kane, lord of a nearby region who wishes to accomplish a task that no one has attempted so far. He wishes to rid the city of all its thieves, murderers and other scum. To do so, he has brought his own private army and is ready to start his mission. Alyssa Gemcroft has recovered from the events of the city of Angelport nearly two years ago and she has learnt to be more cunning while also growing in her economic strength. She however is unprepared for a new surprise that awaits her in the mansion of a fellow trifect member. Zusa is resilient and has constantly been the pillar of support for Alyssa in many ways however she will have to face demons and problems from her past as well and this time it might just be enough to break her. Then there’s Thren Felhorn, the greatest and most feared guild lord who is still trying to regain his lost glory and lastly there’s the Widow who is going around on a killing spree motivated by reasons stranger than most men can fathom.

Thus begins the fourth volume of the Shadowdance series which attempts to fuse the character driven storyline of its preceding titles with the epic action and intrigue of the sequel Half-orc series. This powder-keg is all set to explode and explode it does, in a spectacularly brutal onslaught. The prologue opens with a riddle and a murder and then quickly the plot threads and characters are introduced with enough of a background presented for all new readers to get caught up adequately and for returning readers to whet their memories. The highlights of David’s previous books are spectacularly present, beginning with rapid pace of the story, multiple plot lines, intriguing characterization and sharp plot twists. There's also some strong ties to "Cloak & Spider" as Thren's past history comes into play and for readers who have read the prequel novella, will gain further insight about Grayson, Thren & their common love.

The best part however, is the characterization beginning with Haern and his troubled past, this series is basically about the confrontation that has been ordained between Haern and his father. The seeds for the confrontation were laced in the first two books of the Shadowdance trilogy and it’s in this book can the reader see them coming to fruition. There’s also Alyssa, Zusa, Thren, Victor Kane and a few other characters who each have their own plans and work towards their own ends. The equally awesome part is that while the series is about the Watcher, in this book the focus is shared by many characters each of whom can be confidently considered as a compelling protagonist or antagonist (depending on how you view their story).

This multifaceted character approach makes this story come alive tremendously as the reader is kept guessing on all fronts and something is happening in each POV character thread to keep the plot tension high strung. In this regards, the plot confusion and the thriller aspect of the story really shine through. The pace of the book also seems to make the book more akin to a thriller and this is another plus point in regards to the book. I can’t say that this book has no drawbacks to it but for the type of story I like to read, it had everything; tense mystery, believable characterization, epic action and lastly a strong authorial grasp on the story. All of this along with the book’s humor that is present but in minute amounts and is character specific which makes this story a fantastic read.

Lastly while this is book 4, newer readers should have no problems jumping in and picking up the story, and for the older, returning readers this book is a crossroads of all the three previously written series thereby giving them a big crossover high. The author has commented upon this aspect in the afterword and it shows in the book as we come across a wide array of characters that confabulate and conflict to give the readers a rousing tale. The plot threads come to a reasonable conclusion at the end of this book and the reader is left with a big hint of the story direction of the next book A Dance Of Ghosts.

CONCLUSION: David Dalglish is an anomaly of sorts, his books while seeming generic are turning out to be a unique combination of dark fantasy and exciting thriller modes, thereby giving the readers a potent story and making sure they are left wanting more. I was hooked with the previous trilogy and this one does more of the same in spades. If you truly wish to discover a fantastic new author, give this book a try or if you want, start with book I of the Shadowdance series and experience the origin story as its unfolds epically.

This author is just beyond incredible!
By Patrick Lechner
Let me break this down for those of you whom have yet to enter Davids amazing world. I first read A Dance of Cloaks not entirely thinking the book would be entertaining or engaging enough to hold my interests. I had started the book on my e-reader at roughly 3:30 AM. 7 hours later I had finished all three books of the Shadowdance trilogy and eagerly began the Half-Orc series. This was a tad bit longer so obviously I finished the first five in a day and a half, then book six several hours after that. Then I devoured the Paladins series and as I write this review I am beginning A Dance of Shadows.David's writing is so captivating in the way it's presented, that you literally get sucked into the story and characters and actively wish to know what happens next at the end of each chapter. I constantly recommend his work to all my friends and probably have annoyed the hell out of them with how often I praise his work. Overall, this is well worth reading, I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Just keeps getting better
By Terry
This series gets better with every book. I gave this book a five mainly because of its grit. Good story, good characters, even the villians seems to grow on you. This series isnt about a hero who shows up in the nick of time to save the day, but at times the hero needs to be saved by a few friends. Yes haerne seems superhuman but he isnt always killing the bad guys, though it seems he can, but the author shows that even the best can be beaten, which brings in haernes friends and then you see the other characters' mettle and how different they are. The bad guys are all different from eachother as well. This book and the others before it I recomend to anyone who is wanting something different in the fantasy genre.

Fathomless (Fairy Tale Retelling), by Jackson Pearce

Celia Reynolds is the youngest in a set of triplets and the one with the least valuable power. Anne can see the future, and Jane can see the present, but all Celia can see is the past. And the past seems so insignificant -- until Celia meets Lo.
Lo doesn't know who she is. Or who she was. Once a human, she is now almost entirely a creature of the sea -- a nymph, an ocean girl, a mermaid -- all terms too pretty for the soulless monster she knows she's becoming. Lo clings to shreds of her former self, fighting to remember her past, even as she's tempted to embrace her dark immortality.

When a handsome boy named Jude falls off a pier and into the ocean, Celia and Lo work together to rescue him from the waves. The two form a friendship, but soon they find themselves competing for Jude's affection. Lo wants more than that, though. According to the ocean girls, there's only one way for Lo to earn back her humanity. She must persuade a mortal to love her . . . and steal his soul.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Anne, Jane, and Celia are no ordinary triplets. Anne can read a person's future; Jane, their present; and Celia, their past. The girls spend their days wandering the boardwalk of their coastal town and testing their powers on the tourists. Although Celia's sisters insist that they are "stronger together," she has always felt like the weakest link. However, when she meets Lo, a mysterious girl who lives in the ocean and has no recollection of her human life, she finally understands the value of her unique gift. They work together to unravel Lo's past; but the more Lo remembers, the more she'd like to forget. Chapters alternate between Lo's and Celia's perspectives as Lo struggles to understand who she is and Celia strives to form an identity separate from her sisters. This modern-day retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" plays up the dark side of the fairy tale; teens will find themselves both entranced and terrified by Pearce's world beneath the waves and the tension between the two protagonists once they begin fighting for the love of the same boy. Those who have read the author's other books will delight in the tie-ins, but familiarity with them is not necessary to follow the story. Fans of Frank Beddor's The Looking Glass Wars (Dial, 2006) and Marissa Meyer's Cinder (Feiwel & Friends, 2012) are likely to enjoy this quick-paced revamp.-Jennifer Furuyama, Pendleton Public Library, ORα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist
Shy Celia has always felt overshadowed by her beautiful and talented sisters, Anne and Jane. While Anne can see the future and Jane can see the present, Celia, the youngest triplet, is embarrassed by her own “useless” ability to see the past. That is, until Celia encounters Lo, a mysterious girl from the sea, and Jude, a handsome musician whom Celia and Lo save from drowning. Lo cannot remember who she was or how she became an “ocean girl”; she knows only that her one chance in regaining her humanity lies in seducing and sacrificing Jude. Or can she forge another path with Celia’s help? Seasoned fairy-tale adapter Pearce balances a myriad of voices, narrators, and histories in this fresh, modern, and creepy take on Hans Christian Andersen’s “Little Mermaid.” While the basis for this story will be familiar to most, Pearce’s innovative twists and brisk pacing make for a quick and deliciously suspenseful read that will appeal to those who enjoy their paranormal romance with a side of murder. "Fresh, modern, and creepy...Pearce's innovative twists and brisk pacing make for a quick and deliciously suspenseful read that will appeal to those who enjoy their paranormal romance with a side of murder."―Booklist

"Real-life concerns of rent, school and transportation lend the story an Alice Hoffman-like air of magical realism....A tale dark, deep and strong, like the sea."―Kirkus Reviews

"Haunting...Lo's struggles with her inhumanity, her two selves, and the expectations of Celia, Jude, and her sisters are especially poignant."―Publishers Weekly

"Pearce writes some stunningly poignant dialogue for adolescent girls, and here she offers up her most complicated portrayal yet, giving readers two protagonists who are a blend of selfish, giving, and vulnerable and to whom teen readers will readily relate."―The Bulletin

Another delightful retelling from Pearce
By pandareads
Celia and her triplet sisters have a certain ability between the three of them to tell the past, present, and future of those they touch. While her sisters can use their powers to see the present and future to their advantage, Celia doesn't feel like her gift to see the past is all that useful. That is until she meets Lo, a girl who lives in the ocean who used to be a girl who lived on the land named Naida. Lo doesn't want to forget what it was like to be Naida, and with Celia's help she begins to see her forgotten past more clearly. They work together to save Jude, a handsome local boy, when he falls into the ocean and soon they are competing for his love, for very different reasons...

This is not your Disney movie retelling of The Little Mermaid. There are no friendly crab and fish sidekicks in this retelling, which gets decidedly darker as the novel goes on. I loved the way Celia, Jude, and Lo's lives became instantly intertwined in that one moment. This created a delicious plot that at times was more devious than innocent.

I really enjoyed the alternating points of view in this novel. I feel like I really got to know Celia and Lo/Naida. I really felt for Celia. I'm a twin and I know what it's like to grow and to not have your own identity - you're always thought of as a group. So I knew where Celia was coming from, wanting to do things apart from her sister and have her own friends. But it was Lo/Naida's character that really had me invested in the story - it was like two characters in one person and they kept dueling with each other to see who would be the more dominant one. It was a little bit of a split personality type of thing, and that was extremely interesting to read about, particularly as the novel reached its climax and it was clear only one could win.

All of Jackson Pearce's fairy tale retellings are extremely enjoyable and I highly recommend them all. They all have a delightful cast of characters and brilliantly thought-up plots that take the fairy tales you knew as a child and upgrade them into charming YA novels. I really hope Pearce continues on with the series, I would love to read more.

Fathomless
By Star
The Reynolds triplets have unusual powers - Anne can see the future, Jane can see the present, and the youngest, Celia, can see the past. Anne and Jane use their powers to trick material goods from the boys they meet, while all Celia gets is the burden of the person's memories and feelings from the past. Celia doesn't feel like she fits in with her sisters or anywhere until she helps a strange ocean-girl save Jude, a musician who falls off a pier and into the ocean. Celia's kind of glad to have something secret from her sisters. She wants to grow and become her own person. Celia goes back to the beach and meets Lo, the ocean-girl who helped save Jude, and finds her chance to have her powers actually have meaning. Lo doesn't remember who she was, but she knows she's become something monstrous. Is the only way for Lo to regain her life and humanity to convince a mortal to love her and then drown him to steal his soul or can Celia save Lo from her fate?

I liked how Ms. Pearce kept to the darker side of "The Little Mermaid" story in `Fathomless'. Before there were the fairy tales with the "princesses" everyone knows today, fairy tales were cautionary stories for children. `Fathomless' is told in three voices: Celia, Lo, and Naida (Lo's human side / personality) and they each bring a unique perspective to the events unfolding in their lives. This is a novel about identity, sisterhood, and the meaning of love and friendship. I greatly enjoy reading `retellings' of fairy tales which embrace the depth and darkness of their original predecessors. Ms. Pearce is a masterful storyteller and `Fathomless' is a complex and intriguing novel.

Ultimately unsatisfying
By The Compulsive Reader
Celia and her two sisters share more than a birth date--they each possess supernatural powers that allow them to know people better. But while her sisters are blessed with the gifts of seeing people's presents and futures, Celia can only see their pasts. This seems useless, until she meets the mermaid Lo. Lo is struggling to hold on to her humanity, and accessing forgotten memories helps her hold on. But their friendship is challenged when the girls clash over Jude, a drowning boy they helped save, and the dark forces behind what transformed Lo from human to mermaid are revealed.

Jackson Pearce's Fathomless takes its inspiration from "The Little Mermaid" but it bears little resemblance to the original tale. The narrative is split pretty much equally between Celia and Lo, though Lo has a lot of internal conflicts that make her an unstable narrator, and Celia comes off as the more reliable narrator. Celia, her sisters, their powers, and their sometimes rocky relationship was interesting, but not really fully developed. Celia's new relationship with musician Jude is much more entertaining. Jude is the ideal male lead--kind, quirky, straightforward, with just enough romance. It's no wonder that Lo can't help but like him, despite her ulterior motives for wanting him to fall in love with her. Lo's struggles were heartrending, and her connection to Pearce's Sweetly will make readers happy, but there was still a maddening lack of information about her and her situation by the end of the novel. Fathomless moves quickly, and is a nice addition to Pearce's collection of supernatural fairy tale retellings, but it wasn't very satisfying.

Cover Comments: It's pretty, but I am disappointed.

Would like more plot progression
By BookWyrm
I'm beginning to think this series isn't for me. I'm interested in the ideas and the world, but am starting to get very frustrated with the fact that the books are so short there's no real story progression in any book. I'd probably enjoy it better if I had waited until the series was finished and read them all in an omnibus edition.

Like most of the other books in this series is seems like by the time the story starts moving the book is finished. This book sees B fighting with herself over really joining the Angels or not. She likes their mission, but has difficulties with following anyone who has motives and beliefs that don't completely fit with hers. Most of the book covers B trying to find where she fits in.

I will say, the books to this point haven't been that scary to me, but Shan manages to crank the horror factor up to 11 with the end of this book.

I'll give the next book a shot, but if we don't see some decent plot progression I might have to call it quits.

Blood Royal: A True Tale of Crime and Detection in Medieval Paris, by Eric Jager

A riveting true story of murder and detection in 15th-century Paris, by one of the most brilliant medievalists of his generation.

On a chilly November night in 1407, Louis of Orleans was murdered by a band of masked men. The crime stunned and paralyzed France since Louis had often ruled in place of his brother King Charles, who had gone mad. As panic seized Paris, an investigation began. In charge was the Provost of Paris, Guillaume de Tignonville, the city's chief law enforcement officer--and one of history's first detectives. As de Tignonville began to investigate, he realized that his hunt for the truth was much more dangerous than he ever could have imagined.

A rich portrait of a distant world, BLOOD ROYAL is a gripping story of conspiracy, crime and an increasingly desperate hunt for the truth. And in Guillaume de Tignonville, we have an unforgettable detective for the ages, a classic gumshoe for a cobblestoned era.

From Booklist
On a November evening in 1407, Louis of Orleans, brother of the mentally unbalanced French king Charles VI, was bludgeoned and stabbed to death on a Parisian street by several masked men. This was no simple street mugging. Louis had exercised great power during his brother’s frequent bouts of incapacitation. With France still embroiled in the Hundred Years’ War with England and facing severe internal threats to the monarchy, the murder had far-reaching implications. To unravel the assassination plot, Guillaume de Tigonville, the chief law enforcement officer of Paris, had to wade through the layers of criminality, corruption, and high politics that permeated different levels of French society. Jager has utilized de Tigonville’s written report as the basis for a tense and exciting true-life detective story. De Tigonville is the ideal detective, combining street smarts, a relentless drive, and a willingness to follow where the facts lead regardless of whose toes he steps on. An outstanding crime tale that also provides a good survey of both the glittering facade and the seamier aspects of medieval Paris. --Jay Freeman

Review
Praise for THE LAST DUEL:

"This high-suspense, sanguinary tale ensnares readers. . . . The tension is nearly unendurable. . . . Sex, savagery, and high-level political maneuvers energize a splendid piece of popular history."―Kirkus Reviews

"Jager provides an excellent depiction of feudal society, placing the reader into the lives of knights and nobles, detailing their relationships with each other and their lords. The ongoing Hundred Years' War and each man's role in it give this personal conflict its historical context. The story of the duel and the rivalry leading up to it make for quick reading as enthralling and engrossing as any about a high-profile celebrity scandal today."―Gavin Quinn, Booklist

"If you read only one book about the Middle Ages, Eric Jager's thriller is the one to read."―Steven Ozment, author of A Mighty Fortress and The Burgermeister's Daughter

Riveting Non-Fiction
By M.Jacobsen
As much as I love reading non-fiction history, I admit that it is rare to find a book that is so riveting it reads like fiction. But Jager has written such a book. Paris in the early 1400s was a political mess. King Charles was certifiably crazy and unfit to rule most of the time, leaving a power vacuum that (of course) was constantly being fought over by other powerful nobles. When one of those nobles, Louis of Orleans, was murdered on the streets of Paris one dark night, all hell broke loose and the country very nearly fell into a devastating civil war.

Jager's book is not only a fascinating recounting of this hot political mess, but also the story of Guillaume de Tigonville, the chief law enforcement officer of Paris at the time of the murder and the man who had to solve this crime. The techniques he used, discovered on a piece of parchment centuries after they were recorded, are absolutely fascinating and completely relevant today. Jager writes a taut narrative and never lets the story lag for a moment. This is not your typical non-fiction. If you enjoy the writing of Erik Larson, I highly recommend you read Eric Jager's work. You won't be disappointed.

More Civil War than Crime and Detection
By Nathan Pittman
I can't help but feel that I was a bit misled by the way that this book is marketed and presented. The subtitle, after all, assures me that this is a true tale of crime and detection. However, there are only about two or three chapters that deal with the investigation of the crime itself. There's not really much of a mystery here; the crime and its culprit are quickly uncovered and if I am supposed to better appreciate the investigator's methods I don't feel that the book quite got me to that point.

Most of the book is really about the civil war between powerful French families at the start of the 15th century. I didn't know much about this bit of history and being a history enthusiast I thoroughly enjoyed the bird's eye view of this event. As others have noted, the storytelling and writing are quite engaging. I recommend the book to people who want an introduction to this subject or who might want to kindle a spark of historical enthusiasm in someone who might think all this stuff is dull and boring. The story here is a real life game of thrones, with mad kings, daring betrayals, and even a hint of magic.

However, I can only give 3 stars because the work feels incongruous to me. As noted, the investigation into the murder at the heart of the book is really quite brief. I was stunned when the author quickly revealed the perpetrator. In the end I was unsatisfied. I didn't get a nitty gritty exploration of true crime and detection (I should note I found the book through its exposure on the blog the Volokh Conspiracy and I had recently read The Faithful Executioner so I have some interest in law and history) and the book's larger subject, the French Civil War, breezes by. That sort of sweeping historical narrative doesn't quite fit the author's storytelling (as opposed to historical) style; the book works best when it's focused on setting up the murder and carrying it out. This is most acutely felt with the chief investigator himself, the provost of Paris, who is set out as a "main character" of sorts, and then all but disappears as the book moves into the civil war, only to tragically pop back up again.

I enjoyed the book, but it left me wanting. The literary approach to relating the history ultimately can't be sustained by the entire book (and you should always be skeptical of imposing narratives on history) and the historical meat is quite lean. A good, quick read but not much more.

Interesting history
By Angie Lisle
Guillaume de Tignonville investigated the death of Louis I of Orléans, the younger brother of the mad King Charles VI's, who was murdered in the streets of Paris. The book wound up being less about the murder, focusing instead on how Louis' death sent France into civil war in the 15th-century.

The book is written like a history textbook, which some people may find monotonous but will appeal to history lovers like me. The book is heavily cited with a well-organized bibliography for further research.

The book briefly touches on Charles' illness by describing the symptoms and stating that he may have suffered from schizophrenia, which is what most scholars thought until the last century, when porphyria was documented and diagnosed in Charles' descendants. I wish this subject had been broached; then again, this book wasn't about Charles. I mention this because it's the only thing that irritated me.

I loved the gruesome details that were given about some of the battles that followed in the wake of Louis' death. They broke that traditional textbook mold by not shying away from the horrific aspects of war.

I requested a free copy of this book in exchange for a review from NetGalley.

"If you don't know the Ancillary series by now, you probably should. Ann Leckie's sociopolitical space opera almost singlehandedly breathed new cool into the stereotype of spaceships trundling through far-off systems amid laser battles. ... [Ancillary Mercy] earns the credit it's received: As a capstone to a series that shook genre expectations, as our closing installment of an immersively realized world, and as the poignant story of a ship that learned to sing."―NPR Books on Ancillary Mercy

"Powerful."―The New York Times on Ancillary Sword

"The sort of space opera audiences have been waiting for."―NPR Books on Ancillary Sword

"Fans of space operas will feast on its richly textured, gorgeously rendered world-building."―Entertainment Weekly on Ancillary Sword

"This follow-up builds on the world and characters that the author introduced in the first book and takes the story in new directions. There is much more to explore in Leckie's universe, one of the most original in SF today."―Library Journal (starred review) on Ancillary Sword

"An ambitious space opera that proves that Justice was no fluke.... a book every serious reader of science fiction should pick up."―RT Book Reviews on Ancillary Sword

"It's not every day a debut novel by an author you'd never heard of before derails your entire afternoon with its brilliance. But when my review copy of Ancillary Justice arrived, that's exactly what it did. In fact, it arrowed upward to reach a pretty high position on my list of best space opera novels ever."―Liz Bourke, Tor.com

"Establishes Leckie as an heir to Banks and Cherryh."―Elizabeth Bear on Ancillary Justice

"A double-threaded narrative proves seductive, drawing the reader into the naive but determined protagonist's efforts to transform an unjust universe. Leckie uses...an expansionist galaxy-spinning empire [and] a protagonist on a single-minded quest for justice to transcend space-opera conventions in innovative ways. This impressive debut succeeds in making Breq a protagonist readers will invest in, and establishes Leckie as a talent to watch."―Publishers Weekly on Ancillary Justice

"Using the format of SF military adventure blended with hints of space opera, Leckie explores the expanded meaning of human nature and the uneasy balance between individuality and membership in a group identity. Leckie is a newcomer to watch as she expands on the history and future of her new and exciting universe."―Library Journal on Ancillary Justice

"A sharply written space opera with a richly imagined sense of detail and place, this debut novel from Ann Leckie works as both an evocative science fiction tale and an involving character study...it's also a strongly female-driven piece, tackling ideas about politics and gender in a way that's both engaging and provocative...Ancillary Justice is a gripping read that's well worth a look."―SFX (UK) on Ancillary Justice

"It engages, it excites, and it challenges the way the reader views our world. Leckie may be a former Secretary of the Science Fiction Writers of America, but she's the President of this year's crop of debut novelists. Ancillary Justice might be the best science fiction novel of this very young decade."―Justin Landon, Staffer's Book Review on Ancillary Justice

"Total gamechanger. Get it, read it, wish to hell you'd written it. Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice may well be the most important book Orbit has published in ages."―Paul Graham Raven on Ancillary Justice

"The sort of book that the Clarke Award wishes it had last year ... be prepared to see Ancillary Justice bandied around a lot come awards season. (As it should be)."―Jared Shurin, Pornokitsch

It breaks my heart to say it, but this was really disappointing.
By Michael H Stanley
I loved Ancillary Justice. The characters were great, the timing and plotting were incredibly thought out, subtleties were important but not pushed too hard, and there was a climax.

I hate to say it, but this book was disappointing. AJ was able to be an intimate character study, introduce this foreign concept of ancillaries and ship AIs, and make us care and sympathize with ancillaries, and also play out a plot on an epic scale. AS does none of those things. No new concepts, no important plotline, no Anaander Mianai throughout the entire book, and no recourse for the murder of the Presger translator. How is that not where this book went? Who cares about a corrupt captain smuggling ancillaries? That would get two paragraphs in AJ.

I love the omnipotent/multiple viewpoint Breq has, and the way it allowed situations to unfold in the first novel, but AS just does it because it feels obligated to. The pieces don't really intermingle, it's really just a mechanic to have three unrelated stories going on.

The second book in a trilogy is what makes it a trilogy. It expands the scope, shifts the momentum, introduces twists to issues that seemed resolved previously, and sets some expectation for the final piece. This book unfortunately did none of those things.

Also, the gender thing, which was jarring (in a good way) in the first novel, just didn't make sense in this one. What's the penis festival about? And if you're going to go directly at the issue of "so are there men and women?" why is there not an actual answer? I like the "she" as a standard pronoun use and it frankly made me realize a big bias I didn't realize I had, but there was no similar mechanism in this book.

AJ was so great that I'll read the third anyways, but this was a big letdown. I realize it was a hard act to follow AJ, but this felt mailed in.

Main plot stagnates
By Indy Reviewer
At one point late in Ancillary Sword, a character asks the protagonist, "How (does) any of this (matter) when we have a civil war going on that might find its way here?" Breq's answer placates that character, but after finishing Ancillary Sword many readers will likely find themselves asking the same question with a far less satisfactory response. 2 stars.

The award winning Ancillary Justice combined space opera, social commentary, and shifting perspectives to create one of the more original works of science fiction in some years. While there was some criticism of pacing and depth, most readers felt those negatives were offset by the unique worldbuilding.

Unfortunately, Ancillary Sword retains most of the negatives without the positives. The plot summary: newly promoted Fleet Captain Breq proceeds to Athoek station, where by virtue of her superior rank she can order nearly everyone to do pretty much whatever her whims demand. Anyone who disagrees? Clearly, they're morally and intellectually bankrupt, and Breq has near omnipotence to not only steamroll them but to miraculously contain their enmity. (There's probably an ironic meta here someplace comparing Breq's leadership to Anaander's eternal dictatorship, but this is almost certainly unintentional.)

While there, she uncovers a few conspiracies, spends an awful lot of time working towards social justice for various oppressed locals, and on occasion tries to make up with Awn's sister. The big picture stuff that drove the plot of Ancillary Justice disappears and the book stagnates.

Civil war? Almost nonexistent for most of the book. Alien menace? The introduction of what is easily the most fascinating secondary character in either book ends up devolving into an almost irrelevant transitional plot device. Villains? Two dimensional and not particularly subtle, especially as any ambiguity over the morality of the Radchaai gets erased as the book proceeds. And Awn's sister? While the author previously stated her protection would be Breq's main priority in this book, once she began writing, Leckie appears to have abandoned that idea. Not only is Basnaaid a very minor character, but somehow the author couldn't come up with a subplot that puts her at even moderate peril.

Those who loved the first book will probably find enough here to tolerate Sword, but the bottom line is that this just isn't a particularly enthralling sequel. Perhaps the final book of the trilogy will put all of this in context, but as a standalone this falls badly short. 2 stars.
