From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—A lot has changed since Rules of Summer (Little, Brown, 2013) ended. Rory is back in the Rules's plush home in the tony village of East Hampton, New York, but this time she is a houseguest rather than an employee. Now she is the girlfriend of hunky Connor Rule and best friend of the princess of the Hamptons herself, Isabel Rule. Rory hopes that this summer will be just as fun and romantic as the previous one, but she learns that being an insider in this family is more difficult than she imagined. Not only is Connor unable to live up to her expectations, but drama ensues when Isabel and Rory fall for the same guy. Even more difficult is keeping the deep, dark, family secret revealed in the first book. Romance and betrayal round out this story. Chick lit fans might enjoy it, but readers of the first book will better understand relationships and events as they follow Rory back to the Hamptons for her second summer.—Betsy Davison, Cortland Free Library, NY

From Booklist
This thoroughly upscale teen chick lit continues to examine relationships established in Rules of Summer (2013). Rory McShane, now Connor Rule’s girlfriend, is invited by Connor’s sister Isabel to stay at the Rules’ home in East Hampton. This summer is different because Rory isn’t the errand girl anymore; she is “part of the family.” Soon enough, she finds out that life on the inside isn’t everything she has always wanted. She can’t escape family secrets and crises, and Connor is in total denial about his parents’ looming divorce. The success of her internship with a local film festival rests upon her ability to get the Rules to appear at the fest’s gala, and little by little, Connor cools on their relationship. Enter aspiring filmmaker Evan, who sweeps Isabel off her feet and into a waitress job, scandalizing her mother. All the while, Isabel can’t seem to wash Mike, her surfer ex-boyfriend, out of her hair. Romance, heartbreak, fun, sun, and drama are plentiful, making this a great summer read. Grades 9-12. --Jeanne Fredriksen

Lacked What Made Rules of Summer Special
By Maggie
I make no secret of my love for Joanna Philbin’s Rules of Summer, if you are looking for a great, fun, interesting summer story I still highly recommend you give Rules of Summer a read. But Since Last Summer? As much as I wanted to like it, and I didn’t dislike it, it just didn’t do for me what Rules of Summer did and that’s a shame.

The entire time I read reading Since Last Summer I just kept thinking that it’s a poor man’s Nantucket Red. Which isn’t to say that Joanna Philbin ripped off Leila Howland in any way, it actually never occurred to me to link Nantucket Blue and Rules of Summer outside of the obvious summer setting, but really, I think that is what Since Last Summer is.

Like in Nantucket Red we have a character I really liked and connected with, Rory, back for another summer in a place she doesn’t quite fit into, the Hamptons (more on the setting later). We also have her friend Isabel, the rich daughter of the family Rory worked for last summer, whose perspective also plays into the story. In the first book I felt it was more evenly divided between Rory and Isabel’s POVs, but Rules of Summer seemed more about Rory to me. Anyway, Rory is back in the Hamptons, reunited with Conner, who she’s been dating long distance since last summer, staying with the Rules once again, but interning at the Hamptons Film Festival. Like Cricket in Nantucket Red Rory’s life is a little askew, now that her and Connor have been reunited their relationship doesn’t seem quite so great, her job comes with strings attached, and her friendship with Isabel has its share of rocky moments.

There were two things I really loved about the first book that I felt were lacking in Since Last Summer: the romance and the setting. In Rules of Summer there were two romances, Rory’s relationship with Connor Rule and Isabel’s relationship with Mike, the blue-collar local. As I mentioned, in the second installment Rory and Connor’s relationship is in a rough patch and not really going anywhere good or fun. In fact, Joanna Philbin seemed to give Connor a bit of a personality transplant in order to bring some tension into their romance. It’s been a while since I read Rules of Summer, but the Connor in Since Last Summer isn’t the Connor I fondly remembered. While I can’t say I loved Isabel’s relationship with Mike in the first book it did seem authentic and it was steamy and interesting. Isabel has a new love interest in this book, but he never felt right for her and the relationship seemed forced and headed for a slow burn out.

The depiction of the Hamptons in Since Last Summer wasn’t bad or inaccurate (I’m from the area, for those that don’t know), but it also wasn’t as dynamic or authentic as it was in Rules of Summer. The first book was filled with fun Hamptons insider knowledge, cameos of well known Hamptons places, and even mentions of other places on Long Island (like Isabel taking her driving test in Riverhead), but those just weren’t a part of Since Last Summer. I suppose that’s not really a negative, but it was still something that disappointed me. I will say that there is one thing that bothered me. Rory’s fellow intern is from the North Fork of Long Island and she drives to East Hampton every day for the internship. Although it’s probably only a 30 mile or so drive that drive, in the summer, it would, no joke, probably take the poor girl about two hours each way. I just can’t imagine someone doing that for an internship.

There were other parts of the story that also fell flat for me. I was hoping to learn more about the Rules’ big secret that was revealed at the end of the last summer. We learn a little more about it and get to see some of the aftermath the revealing of the secret caused, but mostly it’s kind of brushed under the rug. I also thought more would come out of the whole Isabel’s dad wanting to buy Mike’s family’s land, but, besides a brief mention, that storyline was no where to be seen. I did however really enjoy the whole Rory/Mrs. Rule relationship that developed in this book, it was weird, but oddly believable and sweet.

Bottom Line: Sadly the thing that Since Last Summer suffers from the most is how good Rules of Summer is. Sequels are tough and sadly this one just didn’t live up to the original. While I still enjoyed reading about Rory and Isabel the fun of their romances, the interesting setting, and the intrigue of last summer were all fairly nonexistent in Since Last Summer. I’m hesitant to say to skip Since Last Summer, but really maybe we should all just try to enjoy Rules of Summer for the fun story it is and just pretend there isn’t a sequel.

Since Last Summer by Joanna Philbin
Book Two of the Rules of Summer series
Publisher: Poppy
Publication Date: June 3, 2014
Rating: 4 stars

Summary (from Goodreads):

Rory McShane should be excited to spend the summer in East Hampton with Connor Rule, her generous, smart, cute boyfriend. After all, Rory's no longer the hired help at the Rule family mansion on the beach, and she and Connor have made it through a year of long-distance dating. But now, in the months leading up to college, Rory can't help but wonder if she really belongs in Connor's world.

Isabel Rule is still trying to get over Mike, the devastatingly sexy surfer who broke her heart last summer. Enter Evan, an aspiring filmmaker who's kind, funny, and crushing on Isabel. He'd be the perfect summer fling -- so why can't she seem to forget about Mike?

Set against a backdrop buzzing with the rich, the famous, and the wannabe rich and famous, Since Last Summer, a companion novel to Rules of Summer, is the perfect beach read.

What I Liked:

Another series, binge-read and over! Well, I think this series is just a duo. I haven't seen anything saying that there would be more books in the series. And this book wrapped up really well, so it must be a duo. So yay, I completed another series! Even if I read the two books just days apart. I can still be proud of me!

This book picks up at the start of the next summer, the summer after the summer of book one. One year after book one occurs, Rory comes back to East Hampton, to Isabel, to Connor. But things aren't as she left them. Apparently, Mr. and Mrs. Rule are getting a divorce, but both Mrs. Rule and Connor are pretending that nothing is happening. Mr. Rule has moved out. Isabel is sick of all the secrets - especially the one that everyone is keeping from Gregory, Sloane, and Connor. Rory feels bad for having to keep it from Connor. Meanwhile, Isabel has found someone else, and he's great! Of course, nothing is perfect in the game of love, which both Isabel and Rory will discover.

Just like the first book, this book explores a variety of issues. Friendship, relationships, divorce, teenage drinking, social classes... I love how Philbin incorporates so many topics in one book. Or series. This book focused more on the the Rules' pending divorce, and less on the rich-poor aspect that was highlighted in the first book (between Rory and the Rules, and Mike and Isabel).

There are many friendships in this book. Rory and Isabel aren't perfect friends, but they're a really great example of two very different people who get along well. In the first book, the girls didn't want to get to know or like each other at first. In this book, the girls are close as friends, and they hurt each other. Without meaning to hurt each, they go through many obstacles, but this makes them closer friends. I love just how important friendship is in this book, especially since this book is told from both girls' points-of-view (dual third person).

The relationships... they are messy. You all know I'm not a fan of messy romance. I like it when characters can make up their mind, definitively, and not be wishy-washy. It's totally unfair to other people when a person can't decide on things, especially when it comes to relationships and feelings! In this book, Isabel meets Evan, who is fabulous. But she has lingering thoughts and feelings towards Mike, who actually does want to get back together wither. And Rory - Rory thought things were solid with Connor, but every time she turns around, he's hanging out with snobby friends from St. Paul's - especially some girls.

I never would have seen the way the romance would have gone in this book, for Rory. For Isabel, I saw it. Most of her thoughts were directed towards one person in particular. But for Rory? I was a bit shocked. It wasn't a shock at the end of the book - no, a reader will be able to tell as soon as this one specific scene comes up (think: pizza). But I was surprised. The summary led me to believe one thing. What happened was another.

So the romance was a huge factor in both girls' lives. The divorce, the secrets, the split family - all of these things weighed down on Rory, and frustrated Isabel. I feel like Rory had very little spine in this book - unlike the first book, where I thought she was a little more feisty and brazen. Isabel thought the same.

Both girls work this summer - Rory has an film internship, and Isabel takes a job as a waitress, where Evan works. I feel like the presence of the summer job and internship is great! Not nearly enough YA novels feature a teen having an internship, so that's awesome. Both girls mature in time, because of their responsibilities. And their romance problems. And their friendship.

All in all, a great sequel! I'm happy with this book. There were a few negatives, but nothing major!

What I Did Not Like:

Like I said, Rory's romance story took me by surprise, and at first, not in a good way. Philbin definitely did a great job of developing Rory's relationships with her peers (Isabel, Connor, etc.), but I was still a tad bit bothered by the romance. And the ending - wow! It's amazing how Rory did a 180 degrees turn from the beginning of book one to the end of book one... and right back around, from the beginning of two to the end of book two. Sort of. You'll see what I mean.

Also, I wanted a bit more between Rory and Connor in this book. Unfortunately, I didn't get that. And there wasn't too much passion and excitement between Isabel and Evan. I almost was rooting for Mike to come back and sweep Isabel off her feet, because the two of them were passionate. Well. Things worked out for Isabel and Rory, in the end. Despite the messy romance. It was messy, but it was okay.

Would I Recommend It:

If you've read the first book, definitely read this sequel novel! A lot of things are resolved and wrapped up really nicely in this book. And if you haven't read either book, that's okay! There are a lot of contemporary novels out there, but I can safely say that this is a good summer series! Especially since it's literally all about summer in both books.

Rating:

3.5 stars -> rounded up to 4 stars. I liked this sequel! I think I liked the first book better, but that doesn't mean I didn't like this one as well! After all, they got the same overall rating. So that's a good sign! This is a great summer/beach-reading series, if anyone is looking out for something like that!

Tuesday's will always my favorite.
Nothing beats walking into the bookstore and seeing all the new books displayed side by side just waiting to be picked up and read.

If they could bottle the scent of new books I would have a signature scent.

Today starts the beginning of a new blog series for me.
"To Be Read Tuesday"

Now a ton of great new books came out today but I'm most excited for Joanna Philbin's book "Since Last Summer".

I read the first book in this series about 4 months ago and I loved every second of it, the story, the characters and definitely the setting.

I'm a sucker for a good summer read and "Rules of Summer" is just that.

If you're unfamiliar with the first book it is set in the Hamptons, Rory Mcshane is hired to be the 'errand girl' for the Rules, a wealthy family with a beachfront mansion and 'servants' fit for a queen. When reading this I kept picturing Emily Gilmore (Gilmore Girls) and her ever rotating staff members.

On the other end of the spectrum is Isabel Rule, she has everything a girl her age could want (minus a drivers license) and yet she's still searching for something more to fulfill her life.

Both girls have a memorable summer filled with forbidden romances, surfers and unexpected friendships.

To say I loved this book would be an understatement, which is why I'm so happy the much anticipated sequel is now available.

"Since Last Summer" Takes place a year later, again Rory is at the Hamptons but this time she is no longer the hired help, after 12 months of a long distance relationship she is staying with the Rules as Conner's guest, but in the months leading up to fall and subsequently, college, Rory is doubting whether or not Conner's world is where she belongs after all.

Isabel is still attempting to recover from last summers broken heart. And what better way to do that then to move on with someone else. So why is it even with a new love interest in sight she can't seem to shake the idea of Mike?

I can't wait to get my hands on this and if it's anything like her last novel I'm sure I'll be raving about it for weeks to come.

Until next time,
Ginger
