Can't wait for the next one

Love the manga, Love the anime. If you've gotten this far in the series you probably feel the same way. Hopefully these will come on Kindle, but I love how large these books are and the cover art is just beautiful. I am seriously considering getting 2nd copies for all of these. In fact, I think I will. Thank you so much for bringing these to american print.

I LOVED IT! I WAS REALLY SURPRISED WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT THIS VOLUME ACTUALLY CONTAINS TWO VOLUMES! YES, YOU GET TWO VOLUMES OF THE ORIGINAL JAPANESE VERSION IN ONE BOOK. ALSO THE SIZE IS BIGGER THAN REGULAR MANGA SO YOU CAN ENJOY THE DRAWINGS EVEN MORE.

After scaling castle walls, diving deep into the home of mermaids, and meeting characters from all of the beloved fairy tales, they are stymied by the Evil Queen, who has escaped from Snow White's dungeon. In a way, they find comfort from their grief over their father's death when they realize that they have been following his journal and that he grew up in this land. The writing quality in this adventure is inconsistent and detracts from the fast-paced story. The deep sadness of the twins comes through, but they are somewhat one-dimensional, since Alex is so much the nerd and Conner, the class clown. The plotline, however, pulls readers in and is entertaining, and Colfer's passion for fairy tales shines through. Land of Stories is a Love Letter to Classic Storytelling

A promising first novel from an imaginative young talent. Even though Colfer is a newcomer to the world of novel writing, I feel that he accomplished what he set out to accomplish with this book.

Children (especially those who have feelings of inadequacy or who have suffered early tragedy, just like Colfer did as a child) will find lots of hope within its pages, along with bravery and kindness and self-acceptance. It's a book about how every seemingly happy ending creates a new set of struggles to contend with, which you have to keep trying your best to overcome -- while also making good moral decisions and finding some kind of peace in spite of hardship. It's also a book about how things often seem to happen for a reason, and how unexpectedly wonderful things can happen as a result of painful struggles.

The book has some interesting meditations on the nature of deep loneliness and longing -- and what people are capable of doing to remedy those heartaches. It's one of the strongest themes that run throughout the story. It appears as a theme in many ways with a variety of outcomes, and manages to be melancholy and uplifting at the same time, which is really lovely. Even with all of that sadness being examined so deeply, the book manages to be really funny and light.

Another thing the book does strongly is preaching the power of understanding and compassion, even towards people who have done terrible things. It doesn't condone those terrible things, and it heavily emphasizes doing the RIGHT thing, but it deftly paints the characters as more complex humans than the classic Good Vs Evil stories do, which makes it all much more interesting and more relevant to real world conflicts.

It isn't a perfect book, of course, and it could have benefited from a little more editing in a few places, but it's very charming and clever and more-than-a-little magical. I found myself giggling out loud at least once every chapter, and I even got a little teary-eyed in a few places. It will speak to children and adults on different levels emotionally while taking them all on a sweet, exciting adventure.

I can't wait to read my copy of the book to my young niece and nephew.

Fun, except the parts that made me want to cry

But those parts were wonderful in their own way.

The book is nicely written, but the real stars of the book are the characters. All the characters have disarming vulnerabilities and a wisdom you don't expect in a book written for kids, or even in a book written by someone so young.

It's especially noteworthy that the female characters are always independent, driven, wise and strong. That isn't always the case in traditional tellings of these tales.

There are still a few typos in the Kindle version, but nothing too distracting.

Honestly, I'd recommend this to almost anyone, ages 8+. It's a fun, easy read and I'd be a lot happier about kids reading these fairytales than pretty much everything else out there.

Oh, Chris...

I bought this for my sixth-grade class library. I read a lot of children's books so that I can make recommendations for my students.

So, I wonder if I'm the only Glee fan to give Chris a poor review. Now, the premise is pretty good, and I love how all the kingdoms are next to each other, and there are parts so far that I have enjoyed. I am on Chapter 10 - about halfway through - and this is such a weak book. I think too many people were "supportive" before this book went to print. Where was his editor? I quote: Alex and Connor (the main characters) "were so petrified, they were paralyzed." Um, yeah, that's kind of the definition of petrified. Earlier in the story, when the twins were given the (magical) storybook by their grandmother (a book that had been treasured by generations of their family, apparently), Alex thinks "It was like receiving an heirloom from a relative that was still alive." Yes, Chris, getting a treasured family object from a visiting grandmother is a lot like receiving an heirloom from a living relative - in that those are exactly the same things.
Last example, when the children are in the storybook land, and Alex is looking at the buildings of the city, she thinks "It was like being in a storybook."

This is harsh, but there's an episode of "Friends" where Joey has to write an official letter, and so he uses a thesaurus to change every other word to a synonym, reducing the letter to gibberish. There's a place or two in this book where I imagine Chris did the same thing.

This is why it's worth having a really good editor. I don't know if there were too many "yes-men," or if Chris Colfer refuses to listen to any constructive criticism, but I expected a lot more from him. I hope the third book in the series is more polished (it's too late for the second), and I wish that fewer fans had written such glowing reviews. The good parts have such potential that with some serious attention to writing, this could have been a much better read.

Typically amusing Waugh

I read my first book by Waugh a few months ago and have become a huge fan, "Vile Bodies" being the fourth Waugh book I've read. Although not a sequel to his first novel, "Decline and Fall," "Vile Bodies" includes several of the same characters and has a similar satiric tone. You do not, however, have to have read "Decline and Fall" to enjoy this book.
The main plot concerns a group of young people from London's "bright young generation." They have monied parents and spend most of their time searching for the next party and amusing fad. The protagonist is Adam Fenwick-Symes, a poor writer who manages to live the highlife by being a hanger-on. He is in love with Nina Blount, but cannot marry her because of his economic status. The book chronicles his attempts at making enough money to marry Nina. As with other Waugh books, the characters are passive and do not really do anything, but they manage to have some terrible things happen to them!
The supporting characters are extremely funny, including the modern Agatha Runcible, the revolving line of Prime Ministers, and the various people who become the columnist Mr. Chatterbox. Of course, as with all of the Back Bay Books editions of Waugh's books, the cover and style are lovely. If you love Waugh, you'll love this book. Highly recommended.

Vile Bodies as 1930s remake of Through the looking glass

What seems to be most missed by readers of Vile Bodies is the supposedly cold ironic author's sympathy for the Bright Young Things he's writing about. So they're empty, loveless, superficial, but they are also the animating force of the novel (1930 was a turgid time of Depression), inventive, amusing, some are even likeable. The love scene between Adam and Nina is very moving behind the brutally ironic mode of its narration - we sense two very scared naive human beings who live by appearances struggling as the reality of the situation hits them. The young people act as they do because their society has no moral centre they can cling to. Parents are mentally unstable and reckless, judges allow young girls to die stupidly in their company, prime ministers are lecherous old codgers, aristocratic grands dames are white slave traders, and religion is either a stepping stone for power (Rothschild) or a vulgarised money-grubbing circus (Miss Ape). By contrast, the Things' aimless frivolity is something of an understandable rebellion in the face of this example from their elders. So ineffectual is the Establishment that the two characters who do wish to settle down in the conservative state of marriage, however sincere or otherwise, are constantly hindered. Ironically, the form of the book is fragmentary, mirroring the society it portrays, but it is the exploits of the Things that bring it together, give it a unifying force. The book is epigraphed by two quotes from Through the looking glass: like Alice, ordered hierarchical society looks at itself, and sees a mad whirling spinning top going madly out of control. Like Thomas Pynchon's Maxwell Demon, the more energy it expends the quicker it reaches inertia. The war at the end isn't literal (we are never given any wider political dimensions). Adam is flung off the merry-go-round into a bleak, dismal hell of his own making, a life without any meaningful ties to shore up against the ruins. A very moving, terrifying, sad, comic masterpiece from the century's funniest writer.

Idiots and savants

The great thing about Evelyn Waugh is that the humor of his novels transcends their era. You don't have to know anything about English society of the 1920s to be entertained by "Vile Bodies" because Waugh's style relies on fundamentally silly characters, wry dialogue, piercing intelligence, and manic energy more than on contemporary culture, events, and figures. What makes his humor unique is that he can be irreverent without being tasteless, which seems an amazing concept since modern comedy has made the terms "irreverent" and "tasteless" practically synonymous. Few novels can elicit from me at least one paroxysm of audible laughter, but "Vile Bodies" succeeds in this feat, as does most of Waugh's work.
"Vile Bodies," one his earlier novels, is prototypical of his career, featuring a protagonist who is beleaguered by misfortunes but manages to rise to certain challenges. Adam Fenwyck-Symes is a young author who would like to marry his girlfriend Nina Blount but doesn't have enough money to support her, and he has to write twelve books before he can get a decent advance from his publisher. For the time being, he rents a room at a boarding house run by a woman named Lottie Crump and inhabited by a disparate group of idiots including the deposed king of Ruritania.
Adam petitions Nina's father, a retired colonel who is either senile or eccentric or both, a wealthy man who's too cheap to buy a car or pay for bus fare but enthusiastic enough about the cinema to blow all his money on the production of a film about Methodism founder John Wesley, for some financial aid, but the old man's strings can't be pulled so easily. A ray of hope is offered in the form of the suicide of a local rag gossip columnist named Simon Balcairn who assumes the nom de plume of Mr. Chatterbox. Adam fills in for the deceased hack, documenting the antics of the partying crowd, nonchalantly embellishing and inventing items to make the proceedings more interesting to his readers and himself.
Waugh is brilliant in the way he constructs an episodic novel within the context of an overarching plot, each of his characters usually having one distinct idiosyncrasy that contributes something significant to the story. One episode consists of a drunken Major who bets Adam's money on a sure horse but never makes it clear whether Adam will ever get his money back. Another memorable scene is an automobile race attended by Adam and a few of his friends, including Agatha Runcible, a young lady who nearly immolates herself by carelessness with her discarded cigarettes. And perhaps the most salient extraneous character is Mrs. Melrose Ape, an American evangelist who travels with a chorus of winged "angels," each named after a Virtue. (Chastity's persistent misconduct with strange men is troublesome to the troupe.) Virtue or not, Discontent could never be as Divine as one of Waugh's novels.

Eishyshok, in Lithuania, was for nine centuries a center of Jewish life in Eastern Europe, where Jews lived "under all the various governments that had fought for control of it: Lithuanian, Polish, German, Russian, and Soviet." But as a result of the Holocaust, writes Eishyshok native Yaffa Eliach in this rich, vastly detailed history, "nearly a millennium of vibrant Jewish life had been reduced to stark images of victimization and death." Eliach offers his chronicle by way of a memorial to those lost citizens and their disappeared history, working through archives, family photo albums, and the memories of survivors. It's hard to imagine that one Jewish town could keep a reader enthralled for so many pages, but Eliach pulls it off. Equal parts history and memoir?the author survived the Holocaust in Eishyshok as a child?the book focuses on the rich lives built by the Jews in the community, which, depending on the year, was under Polish, Lithuanian, Russian or German control. After detailing the central role that the synagogue and religion played in shtetl life, Eliach uses oral history, written documents and numerous photos to describe how Eishsyhok's Jews went about their daily affairs. The Brooklyn College professor deftly demonstrates how the Jewish population reacted to forces outside the shtetl. Some of these forces were political?the 1648 Chmielnicki massacre, the Russian takeover of the town as a result of the final 18th-century partition of Poland?while others were intellectual?the Jewish Enlightenment and the growth of Zionism, both of which modernized life in the town. What results is a case study that sheds light on the entire Eastern European Jewish experience. While Eliach goes to great lengths to focus on the world that the Jews created, the book's most moving moments come in its final chapters, as some of Eishyshok's residents, including the author herself, struggle for survival in the face of genocide. As in her "Tower of Life" exhibit on Eishyshok at the United States Holocaust Museum in D.C., Eliach revives a people and a place that seemed irrevocably lost. 430 b&w photos.

Every town has its history, and even though Eishyshok was a small Polish community, it reflected the trends and tendencies of the wider world. Eliach (Judaic studies, Brooklyn Coll.; Hasidic Tales of the Holocaust, LJ 10/1/82) has spent 17 years researching the Jewish community where her ancestors were among the first settlers and where she spent her early years. Although Jewish history there had a grim finale in the Holocaust, Eliach set out to write a book celebrating the town's robust and creative past. What she has accomplished is a scholarly masterpiece for the informed lay reader. The double-columned pages and extreme length of the work may be daunting to some, but the endlessly fascinating stories will soon captivate. The photographs, an essential element, are taken from "Tower of Life," the permanent exhibit Eliach created for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. Biographies, historical movements and episodes, local folklore, religious culture, and more are addressed in this prodigious study. I can not think of a better memorial than this book

This is an incredible work of genealogical importance. How Yaffa Eliach could have researched every person who lived in this shtetl is beyond me. By doing so, each person lives again through her stories and pictures. I can not think of a better memorial than this book. Fascinating and brilliant!

An important and moving book.

This meticulously researched book chronicles the 900-year-old settlement of Eishyshok, a center of culture and tradition that was virtually extinguished by the Holocaust. Rather than focus on the terrible end, the author has endeavored to revive the town and its inhabitants through salvaged photographs, narratives, and history gathered over many years of travel and research. The author has produced a moving and well documented book that serves history while respecting and memorializing the individual people who gave the town its spirit. I have to doubt the motives of those who are using this review space to disect the author's own life and memories, which are not the subject of this book.

The pictures and captions alone make this book worth the price of admission. You can pick up this book, and randomly turn to any page, and find it intriguing. Once you start, it is difficult to close the book, to put it down. The reader is stunned by the amount of research and the wearying journeys that must have gone into the compiling of this volume. It is a masterpiece with all the photos, the descriptions, the minute details of the once-beautiful life in Eishyshok. It is a heartbreaking book, that so many of those beautiful, shining lights were snuffed out so callously and brutally. Yaffa Eliach has produced unforgettable scenes of a lost world. It is amazing that she could find so many of those wonderful pictures of handsome families, enjoying life in Eishyshok. One feels as though one knows the people, as we look into their faces and read about their lives from long, long ago. This is one of the finest books on any subject that I have ever seen. It definitely deserves to be in every home.

Quirky and charming

This is a quirky and charming little book, composed entirely of Nina Stibbe's letters to her sister Victoria after she moved to London to be a nanny. Nina's letters aren't really like any letters I've read before, and they're very unlike letters I would write. Nina is hilarious and she has a keen ear for dialogue. She observes the most unusual things and manages to make the most mundane tasks funny (see excerpt below regarding laundering pillows). Throughout the book, she includes lots of little mini-dialogues between her and Mary-Kay (MK, her boss) and Sam and Will (her charges). For example:

MK: What are these?

Me: Pillows.

MK: Yes, but why have I got them? Where are my usual ones?

Me: Sam's probably got your usual ones.

MK: So what are these?

Me: I think they might be the ones I laundered.

MK: Laundered?

Me: Took to the launderette.

MK: Are they washable?

Me: Not as such, but it was kill or cure.

MK: It was kill.

To find that little vignette I literally just turned to a random page in the book. I find exchanges like this so charming because I would never think to write about a conversation like that in a letter, but it so perfectly illustrates the things that make up daily life. Her writing also made me really want to be a fly on the wall in that house so I could listen in on the razor sharp wit.

I should tell you that Mary-Kay is Mary-Kay Wilmers, who at that time was the editor of the London Review of Books. She is friends with several of the literary/cultural elite of London in the 1980s--Alan Bennett, Jonathan Miller, Claire Tomalin--most of whom stop by the house regularly. (The only one of those I had heard of before reading the book was Alan Bennett, because of his recent book The Uncommon Reader.) So this isn't just any household that Nina has found herself in--she ends up rubbing elbows with some pretty famous people.

This is a fairly breezy read--there's not much plot, per se, although I did become invested in the boys and Mary-Kay and I couldn't help but root for Nina as she began studying at university. But it's not really a page turner...it's more of a quiet and thoughtful book, perfect if you don't want anything too heavy or just have a few minutes to read (the letters are short, so it's easy to read a few in a short time). You could say it is "light reading" at its best.

The book has gotten quite a few absolutely glowing reviews, and while I liked it and enjoyed reading it, I didn't LOVE it. There is a lot in this book that feels like "inside baseball," meaning that I bet this book is infinitely more fun to read if you happen to have come of age in England in the 1980s. There are so many cultural and political references, as well as the ins and outs of living in England during that time, that I just couldn't fully appreciate (not having come of age in England in the 1980s).

I always get a little sad when I read these kinds of books because nobody seems to write letters anymore, do they? (It's all texting now, isn't it?) It's too bad, because letters are so fun...and it was fun to look back at how the letters included in this book told the story of Nina and her life through small glimpses. Let's just say I don't think anyone will ever compile a book of text messages...

BOTTOM LINE
Recommended for light and fun reading, especially if you happen to have grown up in England in the 1980s. I think this would be a great beach read or a book to read when you want something that you can dip into and out of easily. Parts are very, very funny and made me want to live with Mary-Kay, Sam, Will, and Nina.

Nina's descriptions are simple yet accurate, and readers feel like a fly on the wall

Nina Stibbe moves to an upscale neighborhood in North London to become a nanny to Mary-Kay Wilmers, a single mother and editor of London Review of Books. She writes home to her sister, Victoria, "Being a nanny is great. Not like a job really. Just like living in someone else's life." Her charges are Mary-Kay's two sons, Sam and Will. Nine-year-old Will is the worrier; it’s 1982, and he’s concerned about nuclear war. Sam is 10 ½ and has some physical disabilities that aren't named. Appearing to take his condition in stride most of the time, he’s a keen observer who seems wise beyond his years.

The neighborhood is a Who's Who of literary and creative types. Alan Bennett, playwright and actor, drops in often, especially at meal time. Nina wrote Victoria that he starred in the long-running and very popular British soap opera “Coronation Street,” but she is incorrect. Jonathan Miller, actor and opera director, is another neighbor whose occupation Nina gets wrong. Eventually, she sorts it all out and comes to really enjoy being in the company of this eclectic group of folks. Her observations and descriptions of the friends and neighbors who come and go from the Wilmers household are fresh and unedited. She writes that Mary-Kay, Sam and William all have basin (bowl) haircuts, Mary-Kay often cusses, and privileged folks don't talk about money. She introduces her charges to Toffos, which Will decides are "just naked Rolos," and describes the men Mary-Kay dates.

Nina's letters to Victoria are full of opinions and bits of conversations about daily life. Nina dyes her plimsoles (sneakers) a greeny-blue in the washer, and then all the laundry seems to be a bit greeny-bluish. She is sent to the Millers to borrow a saw to trim the trunk of the Christmas tree, and the family misplaces it. Bottles of milk arrive regularly on their doorstep, but never a milk bill, even though Mary-Kay reminds the milkman. Meal-time conversations might be about the digestive system, pie fillings, a neighbor's large behind, or how to cuss in German. Children the ages of Sam and Will are keen observers of human nature, and their running commentaries are usually spot-on.

This peek into the domestic life of Mary-Kay, her children and their neighbors is quite interesting. Nina's descriptions are simple yet accurate, and readers feel like a fly on the wall. It would be interesting to dine with the family, even though Nina puts tinned tomatoes in the Hunter's Stew, which Alan Bennett considers a mistake.

The Nanny Letters

When Nina Stibbe applied for a job as nanny to a family in Bloomsbury, she was twenty years old, had never lived in London, and was unaware of the literary celebrities who would soon populate her world.

This was in the early 1980s and she was used to having long, detailed chats with her sister back home every night after work. Since her sister didn't have convenient access to a phone, Nina wrote her frequent letters, telling her about the family she was living with, the people who visited, tidbits about her new London neighborhood.

Her sister found the letters recently and as unlikely as it all seems, now they're a book. The book is in two parts, the first part is Nina's letters to sister Victoria as she settles in with the Mary Kay and her sons Sam and Will, ages nine and ten. Mary Kay Wilmers is an editor (and founder) at The London Review of Books. Her ex-husband and the father of the boys is Stephen Frears, a movie director. Alan Bennett lives just across the street and is over for dinner most evenings. Jonathan Miller lives down a few doors, close enough to borrow things from. Michael Frayn, playwright, is a neighbor, as is John Lahr, American theater critic, and a host of others. Some celebrities only pop in for cameo appearance, such as Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson.

The second part of the book consists of the letters Nina sent to Victoria from university. There's an overlap, as Nina was no longer the nanny, but Mary Kay invited her to stay at the house and Nina continued to help out but on a more casual basis. I found the university adventures less interesting than the Bloomsbury gossip.

Nina was a great letter writer, she included lots of detail, including plenty of snippets of conversation that give you a vivid picture of what the people in her life were like. She was hardly star struck, in fact her first letters to her sister describe Alan Bennett as being an actor in a soap opera and Jonathan Miller as being an opera singer.

A fun, quick trip back to the eighties for fans of the London book and theater crowd.

FUNNY, FUNNIER, FUNNIEST ???

It can be really difficult to get some young people excited about reading books. Whether your kids are readers or haven't shown much curiosity yet, the James Patterson book "I Funny" and this book, its sequel, represent a great opportunity to get them started on a lifetime journey of reading adventure. The author's main character Jamie Grimes, is an atypical modern young boy in two respects ... he is wheelchair-bound and also is extremely bright and witty. Jamie also has powerful personal ambition. This book is about embracing your goals in the adversity of normal life hardships. It is a young-adult classic with lots of illustration and humor. Buy it as a gift and you just may be very pleased at the positive changes you will witness in the children you bought it for.

Great fun book

James Patterson does it again. My son reads and rereads this book. He shows his friends and they read it together out loud. This book is a creative and perfect for kids to read. This book has kept my son reading and reading which is a great thing. My son thinks this book is funny and entertaining. I can't wait till the next one comes out. I would buy again.

Maci's Review- I even Funnier by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein is just as good as the first one, I Funny. In this book Jamie Grimm is on his way to semi-finals. But there are some challenges along the way that Jamie has to deal with. I loved this book. It is really heartfelt, more than the first one, and you really love Jamie more than you already do. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants a heartfelt funny read.

Zoe's Review- This book is once again recommended by my brother. He will only read good books, this is a great book. In the sequel to I Funny, Jamie has to face competition, disappoint and happiness. I really enjoyed reading this and it was funny the whole way through. I liked how heartfelt this story was and enjoyed reading it the whole way through. I can not wait until the next one comes out! I recommend these books to any reluctant reader or anybody looking for a funny, good, heartfelt story.

This book series makes reading FUN!

My eight year old daughter cannot get enough! She demolished all nine books in the series in a few weeks and is clamoring for more! She loved the movie and thought the books were even funnier! She enjoyed the different types of dragons. She is now REALLY HOOKED ON READING!!!!!!!! Home Run!

The movie was our first exposure to Dragon. That sparked the interest in the first book from the school library. Wanted to get more so ordered the entire series. Kids have devoured them. Great purchase!

Fun to read.

Do you ever want to read something so whimsical that doesn't make you roll your eyes from how silly things get? This is that kind of book series for you then. :D I cannot believe how original and fun these books are. Ms Cressida Cowell has a lot of fun 'translating' this story and telling the tale of Hiccup. For those out there who've only seen the film I completely recommend reading this series. Yes it is very different from the movie we all know and love but the books are the very reason that film exists and holds the same spirit of the film. Hiccup in both universes is exactly the same with only an age difference and the misadventures he and his trusty common green dragon, Toothless get into are great to read. If you can get past some of the gross jokes I'm sure a lot of people could enjoy this book. But to be warn this is meant for kids, but then again so was Harry Potter. :\ Just saying, not trying to make a comparison or anything.

So...I finished reading Struck by lightning. It is hard to find the right words to describe my feelings right now. I will still try to write a little review, though.

Again, Chris Colfer really amazed me. This story is about Carson Phillips, an outcast because he is different, stuck in an little town, desperately wanting to get out of there...he sure isn't perfect, in fact he is a prick sometimes. But still...he is full of dreams and is ready to do almost everything to reach his goal. No matter what. He fights for it. With Carson, Chris created a character who shows that everyone is able to dream, one just has to find themself, find something to fight for. Sure, that isn't easy. But if you trust yourself, trust your heart, you can do it. You just have to crack that nutshell around you, everyone else telling you what you can't do, everyone who hurt you and everyone who did you wrong trapped you in and...fly. Loving and accepting yourself, knowing it is ok to be you and show it, is an great start to do it. I personaly loved one passage in the book:

Like having a great idea, life comes at you fast. It hits you and tries to escape and be expressed in anyway possible. In a way it is a lot like...lightning.

So...what did `Struck by lightning' show me? What did it inspire me to do? A good question. I think...it inspired me to try and accept myself a little more every day, to actually get to know myself more. And who knows...maybe I will some day find my own dream and fly, even if that day seems to be so far away right now. And if that should ever happen, Chris Colfer will have done a lot to make it happen, without even knowing it. So I am saying THANK YOU, Chris. Thank you for being so amazingly talented, being such an inspiration, for...just being you. Please...never stop to fly.

Great book

Purchased for my 12 year old daughter who is a huge Glee fan. She devoured this book, it is well written and for the most part, age appropriate. There is some adult content but it is not at all graphic, and for the most part, implied. if your child watches Glee, the book is much more tame. I also recommend Chris Colfer's other book, Land of Stories.

Poignant and Insightful

Overall I found this an easy read and very enjoyable. The main character is very sympathetic even though it is quite clear he is not the most likable character. He is fleshed out and quite in depth while the other characters are not, though that makes sense as this is all written from his own perspective. Although the book is quite funny and witty throughout, my overall impression, especially at the end was more sad and longing than it was hopeful. I finally felt like I really wanted this character to succeed and it seems like everything and everyone is so against him. I do always find that is the hallmark of a great piece of fiction - if it truly makes me feel strongly - even if that feeling is sadness.

I liked the observations and insight - both the earnest ones and the witty ones. A few times it seemed like the main character was getting almost preachy, but he then calls himself out on that and goes back to being a bit of a jerk, so it never seems too forced. There were a few times when a metaphor seemed awkward, but even those were always interesting, so I didn't mind it.

While I am sure the overall story as well as its details are entirely fictional, it is very interesting to see a character that is so angry and uses his anger as a way to fuel his drive and ambition to make something of himself and to compare that to the author's own story of getting out of a small and constricting town and achieving great things.

I will say there is a lot of cursing throughout the book. That's no problem for me as an adult and it probably makes it appealing to the young adult crowd, too, but it might be good for people to know this ahead of time if they are concerned about what their children might be reading. However, it certainly isn't anything they wouldn't have heard already if they're in high school.

I got the audio version of the book because I find it really interesting to hear the author's take on the way the characters sound. Although most of this is in the main character's voice, the author does have the chance to do some other voices, which is always interesting. It also is interesting to hear the emphasis used by the author, so I highly recommend listening to the audio version. I also am really looking forward to the movie because I would like to see what differences there might be in the two versions.

I am glad to have this in my collection and I really can't wait for more writing from Chris Colfer. He really shows such promise as an author.
