Conflicting Messages

I bought this for my 8 year old niece because we are both big fans of all things monster (anything Tim Burton is okay by us). Before handing them over, I decided to read them first. Thank goodness I did.
The books promote VERY conflicting messages for young girls. The characters are supposed to be promoting "being true to yourself" and "it's okay to be different"; however, all the girls in the books talk about is how they look, what clothes they are wearing, and the size they are (one character brags that she's a "zero on the bottom and a large on the top"). The first book's plot centers around a love triangle and a girl trying to steal another girl's boyfriend. And while they whine about how they are not accepted for being different, they constantly make fun of anyone who doesn't dress or look "cool". I really don't know if I should give these books to my niece - - they don't re-inforce ANY values that I believe in.
By the way, I would consider the difficulty of the writing to be at around a 5th-7th grade level. I'm sure my 8 year old niece will be able to get through it because she's always been an advanced reader, but I really wouldn't recommend it for anyone younger than 8 or 9.

Be wary of the age of the child...

Highly, HIGHLY inappropriate content for anyone younger than 12/13. These books are NOT based on the characters that your girls have seen in the webisodes, which are created for a much younger audience. I bought these for my 11-year old MH fan--good thing i flipped through them first. Extremely inappropriate. Written for late middle school, early high-school age--which I thought was odd: they're written on a low reading level, but higher maturity level. Just beware, parents!

Nice book set; great for young girls!

I bought these books for my step-daughter. She loves Monster High, and she’s going through a phase where she hates reading. So, I’m trying to get her books she’s interested in so she will read.
The books are a nice quality, and they come in a sleeve that holds the set, which includes the first four books in the series. They’re nice chapter books with a few drawings scattered throughout. The print size is similar to that of the print size in adult books (see attached picture), and each book has almost 250 pages. It should take her quite a while to read each book.
Her birthday is a couple of weeks away, and these are a gift; I’ll update my review once she has started reading them to let you know what she says.
