A Life in the Arts

Sally Mann's "Hold Still" is a thoroughly remarkable achievement. Her stories -- lush, densely interwoven and filled with allegory -- unfold with an eloquence reminiscent of passages from "One Hundred Years of Solitude". And along the way, her backstage color commentary on the character (and the characters) of the South could give "Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil" a good run for its money. (Picture a Netflix mini-series titled "The Family of Mann"...).

But while "Hold Still" is nominally a memoir, Sally Mann uses the opportunity more to analyze her life-in-progress than to display it all wrapped up with a bow on top. Most of the individual chapters would work perfectly well as freestanding essays. Some explore family history (inevitably intertwined with Southern history) while others thread their way through Sally's working process and her encounters with the so-called art world.

The writing itself is meticulously detailed and personal -- and spiked throughout with wickedly funny insights (often at her own expense). But her writing is also, above all, intelligent. Simply put, Sally Mann brings a ton of intellectual firepower to bear upon a huge range of subject matter. Taken as a whole, it's wild ride (!) through the perils and rewards of living a rich and varied life.

Emotions In Black & White...

I got to know of sally's work through "What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann" documentary. Art and architecture can offer an emotional value only when one’s breath is taken away by such art, when one is checked out for a period of time and can hardly think of anything else other than what they are witnessing through the creation of that artist. I am in possession of few works by Ansel Adams and although I travel to those places that Ansel has photographed time after time, the fact that I am checked out year after year looking at Ansel's photos of the same places that I visit time after time, it still does not take away the emotions that Ansel offers me through his art time after time, as well as to others for centuries to come.

Sally Mann's work, artistry and approach to photography where she allows one to see images in black and white and experience emotions without being there is just simply a standard by itself. Every detail of her pictures is a story through a lens in a format where I am checked out in awe, in rainbow of colorful BLACK and WHITE images time after time. Watching her husband to deteriorate physically in those photos are as powerful as the cover photo of her book where I can clearly feel, smell, taste that colorful countryside with that blue sky when infact all Sally has done is to present Mother Nature to me only in black and white. Bravo, bravo, bravo.

Great book, sadly not well illustrated.

Sally Mann's sensitive account of her life is to be savored. She writes beautifully, lyrically about her home in Virginia, and about her life.
I bought the hardback version of the book because I thought I would have some of her photography to enjoy along with the prose. Sadly the publishers chose to print the photographs not on high quality glossy sheets, but straight on to the cream colored pages. They lack definition and they are washed out. They don't do any justice to this fine photographer's life and work. It's a pity they were cheap in producing this work.

Minions galore!

I bought this book for my 5 year old son who is very into Minions. He loved it. I had to read the pages for him and explain each activity. I'm not sure that he understood every activity exactly, but he had fun with it.

The images are "true to the movie," but generic (i.e., no bad Minions, "Anti-Villain League" only mentioned). Stickers are only removable from the high-gloss pages if you reposition them almost immediately AND are very careful. If you wait a couple days, forget it. They're stuck permanently.

There are 7 activities, all involving stickers: "make a Minion" (all yellow pages where you can combine Minion face parts any way you like), "make a Minion beach" (beach scene where you can stick Minions in various beach-y pursuits), "make a Minion costume" (various Minions are dressed in costumes, but you have to complete their costumes with appropriate accessories), "make a Minion and friends gallery" (stick the right "portrait" of Gru and the girls in the correct picture frames), "make a Minion sleepover" (girls' bedroom scene where you stick the girls and accessories), "make a Minion spy team" (accessorize Minions in various action poses with various weapons to help Gru), and "make a Minion pileup" (stick the Minions in a stack so they can "reach" a shelf of cupcakes at the top of the page).

The book is pretty good, but I gave it 4 stars because the stickers are not really "reusable" and they are all bundled into 4 pages in the middle of the book. It would be helpful for younger kids if the stickers are grouped and labeled specifically for each activity.

Not reusable stickers

The stickers are not reusable stickers. They are regular stickers and pages in the book are the slightest bit slick. The stickers barely come off (if you can get them off at all) and you are lucky if they do not rip. This book was a huge disappointment and a waste of money.

Disappointed that once the stickers were placed in the book they didn't come off to re -use. Ripped or didn't come off. Lots of fun putting them in but not re-usable

I grew up reading Lois Ducan's book as a teen. She was by far my favorite author. Stranger With My Fave was the first book I read of hers and I remember not being able to sleep that night.. I was terrified!! Reading it now as an adult I find the book still so enjoyable. This is definitely one of her BEST!!

I Funny is another golden middle school story by James Patterson. WARNING: SPOILERS! I Funny is the story of a boy whose family died in a car crash and was the only survivor. The boy grows up to become a kid comedian and enters "Planet's Funniest Kid Contest" and more while testing his jokes on his foster family the "Smileys" (who never ever smile). With the help of friends and family, the boy accomplishes much. That boy is Jamie Grimm.

I am a 5th grader at Vista Verde School and I found I Funny to be a great book. Through the eyes of Jamie Grimm, I could relate his life adventures to mine and other kids across the world. Kids, more so kids in wheelchairs, hate being treated like a baby. My parents, some of my teachers, and even restaurant waiters treat me like I can't do anything and they have to do everything for me. Jamie Grimm felt the same way when people went easy on him just because he was in a wheelchair. Jamie Grimm got stage fright his first time performing on "Planets Funniest Kid Contest". Many kids have stage fright at concerts and talent shows, even me! I'll admit some of the jokes are a bit bland and it is hard to imagine a kid going to Long island all by himself just for a competition. But besides that, I Funny is a great book that many kids can relate to in their life. I recommend this book for 4-6th graders because of the anti-bullying and other concepts. In I Funny, Jamie Grimm outwits and deals with bullies, and earns respect from people all around the world. I Funny is a great book for kids while parents might not find it as amusing. All in all, I love this book by James Patterson and I urge you to read it too.

This is a great book. It's funny, includes a whole cast of characters, and not everything is perfect for the main character. A great story for middle school aged kids or for someone who wants a laugh. It's a great combination of funny and possible real life.

As a fan of Patterson's other works for children, I love this book. It cracks me up and feels more "grown up" than the Middle School books. I won't spoil anything for you. Just enjoy this fantastic book.

Loving it

I love this manga, the story is great, the art is just fantastic. This volume is a continuation of Mamoru's battle with Fang and the new "wipe out the small fry" fight. Mamoru is proving to be a seriously strong character but nevertheless, the help from his young companion is not taken for granted, since Haruka does help aid Mamoru quite a lot.
Anyone who likes action packed mangas, with sword and gun fights would love this. Recommended 5*.

I am really enjoying the story DS is developing with Mamoru-san. The whole blind swordsman kick really charges me up.

I still like it

To action lovers, this manga delivers. There is enough geeky stuff with super cool powerful gizmos but also a lot of fighting with great art to bring it to life and excite you.
The story line brings in more baddies and Mamoru and co will have their hands full to deal with them.
I read through it pretty quickly and am waiting for the next volume.
Heh, the story is exciting and I have to remind myself sometimes to pause and appreciate the wonderful drawings too!

About the Author
Don Mann (CWO3, USN) is the author of the forthcoming Inside SEAL Team Six and has for the last thirty years been associated with the Navy SEALS as a platoon member, assault team member, boat crew leader, or advanced training officer; and more recently program director preparing civilians to go to BUD/s (SEAL Training). Up until 1998 he was on active duty with SEAL Team 6. Since his retirement, he has deployed to the Middle East on numerous occasions in support of the war on terror. Many of the active duty members of SEAL Team 6 are the same guys he taught how to shoot and conduct ship and aircraft takedowns, and trained in urban, arctic, desert, river, and jungle warfare, as well as Close Quarters Battle and Military Operations in Urban Terrain. He has suffered two broken backs, two pulmonary embolisms, and multiple other broken bones, in training or service. He has twice survived being captured during operations.

I guess it was ok

Hunt the Wolf was listed as an action packed US Navy Seal fictional story. It was but 1/3 of it was the unit climbing a mountain, not looking for bad guys. That part would have been nice if I was looking for a Mt. climbing novel. Seemed pretty expensive for what was delivered. If you want a really great real life US Navy Seal story read Roberts Ridge which is about half as expensive.

Hunt The Wolf

I just finished reading Hunt The Wolf by Don Mann---WOW. What an emotional ride, I did not want it to end. If I'm ever having a bad day all I have to do is think about what Crocker had to endure. All I can say is look out Vince Flynn and Brad Thor---here comes the MANN. Fantastic job. Hope you have another book in the works.

Started well, but turned bad

When an action thriller is supposedly written or even co-written by a former Navy Seal, there is an expectation of authenticity, drama and suspense, which is completely lacking in this book.

Hunt the Wolf starts well, with an explosion at the US Embassy in Morocco. It continues well, with a Seal team preparing to seek revenge and be thrown into action. But around page sixty, it all turns bad. Perhaps this is where Mann handed over the laptop to Pezzullo and the story went to crap.

What follows is a completely unrelated mountain climb. All sense of urgency is lost. It makes no sense whatsoever. Instead of hunting terrorists, the Seal team climbs some mountain in Pakistan, where the team members end up with injuries. When the book returns to the main storyline, the reader wouldn't know. By then, even the more ardent reader would have thrown the book away.

The plot had great potential and the writers could have done so much more if they would have allowed the Seal team to actually do its job, like Mr. Mann used to, when he was on the field. Regretfully, he's forgotten what it used to be like.

Let me preface the review with a disclaimer. I have enjoyed reading Steve Rushin's work since his earliest days at Sports Illustrated and still consider his initial book,Road Swing,one of my favorites. As a fellow bald guy raised in the Midwest who has been a fan of all sports, particularly baseball, since earliest childhood I find Rushin's interests and ability to weave sports into the fabric of his life exactly similar to my own experiences. Therefore, I purchased this book knowing that I was going to like it. I was not disappointed.
Beginning with the introduction, the author was able to capture the exact mixture of arcane history, personal memoir, genuine humor, and nostalgia that bonds American families and sports fans together so uniquely. His impeccable curiosity and writing skills make the book difficult to put down once started and fuel a considerable fund of trivia upon which one can draw whenever conversation lags.
His brand of gentle good humor and bonhomie is in the best American tradition of Frank Deford, Roy Blount,and even Mark Twain, and I heartily recommend reading this book.

Fantastic Read

A "why didn't anyone think of this before" book about the paraphernalia that makes baseball what it is. The histories and evolutions of the ball, bat, glove, uniforms, novelties and oddities that have become part of the game's past and present are all recounted with Steve Rushin's patented clever flair. I did not expect to discover the origin of the term "jockey shorts" in this book, among many other delightful bits of trivia. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and any baseball fan would also.

Why hasn't this book been written before?

This excellent book is must reading for every fan of pro baseball. It is 288 pages concerning the origins of aspects of trips to the ballpark which have been around since before we were born.

When you find yourself at a bar with friends, needing something to contribute to the conversation, the facts you will learn from this book are sure to entertain everyone.

Great book, my son couldn't put it down

This was a great follow up to the first installment of this series. My 8 yr old son received the first book as a gift from his Little League coach and seemed to fly through the first and did the same with the second. He's anxiously waiting for the 3rd book to be released.

This book is perfect for my reluctant reader. He LOVES baseball and his was the perfect way to get him reading. The book is so well written and the story teaches some wonderful lessons. My 4th grader has asked for all the additional titles in the series for Christmas!

Conflicting Messages

I bought this for my 8 year old niece because we are both big fans of all things monster (anything Tim Burton is okay by us). Before handing them over, I decided to read them first. Thank goodness I did.
The books promote VERY conflicting messages for young girls. The characters are supposed to be promoting "being true to yourself" and "it's okay to be different"; however, all the girls in the books talk about is how they look, what clothes they are wearing, and the size they are (one character brags that she's a "zero on the bottom and a large on the top"). The first book's plot centers around a love triangle and a girl trying to steal another girl's boyfriend. And while they whine about how they are not accepted for being different, they constantly make fun of anyone who doesn't dress or look "cool". I really don't know if I should give these books to my niece - - they don't re-inforce ANY values that I believe in.
By the way, I would consider the difficulty of the writing to be at around a 5th-7th grade level. I'm sure my 8 year old niece will be able to get through it because she's always been an advanced reader, but I really wouldn't recommend it for anyone younger than 8 or 9.

Be wary of the age of the child...

Highly, HIGHLY inappropriate content for anyone younger than 12/13. These books are NOT based on the characters that your girls have seen in the webisodes, which are created for a much younger audience. I bought these for my 11-year old MH fan--good thing i flipped through them first. Extremely inappropriate. Written for late middle school, early high-school age--which I thought was odd: they're written on a low reading level, but higher maturity level. Just beware, parents!

Nice book set; great for young girls!

I bought these books for my step-daughter. She loves Monster High, and she’s going through a phase where she hates reading. So, I’m trying to get her books she’s interested in so she will read.

The books are a nice quality, and they come in a sleeve that holds the set, which includes the first four books in the series. They’re nice chapter books with a few drawings scattered throughout. The print size is similar to that of the print size in adult books (see attached picture), and each book has almost 250 pages. It should take her quite a while to read each book.

Her birthday is a couple of weeks away, and these are a gift; I’ll update my review once she has started reading them to let you know what she says.
