Another Winner from the Stokes
By Karl Werner
Please see my review of the Eastern Guide, as it contains general comments that apply to both the Eastern and Western books. As a special note to the Western guide, it should be noted that the Stokes divided the country in such a way as to show the eastern section of Texas in the Eastern book, and the western section of Texas in the Western book. What this means is that most of the specialty birds of Texas are found in the Eastern book, not the Western. Examples of this include Chachalaca, Least Grebe, White-tailed Hawk, Red-billed Pigeon, White-tipped Dove, Buff-bellied Hummingbird, Green Jay, Brown Jay, Long-billed Thrasher, Altamira Oriole, and Audubon's Oriole. The only specialty bird of Texas found in the Western book and not the Eastern is the Colima Warbler.
Also note that more rare Texas birds such as Hook-billed Kite, Tamaulipas Crow, Blue Mockingbird, Tropical Parula, White-collared Seedeater, and Blue Bunting are not in either the Eastern or Western books. They are, however, in the complete book, Birds of North America.
So, if Texas is in your plans, please think about which book will serve you better.
A final note is that the price at Amazon for both the new books is a steal for what they contain. It should be a no-brainer to buy them both.

Most accurate and detailed birding guides available
By Ron Ezetta
"The Stokes Field Guide to Birds" (Eastern and Western editions) combine detailed photography with incredible attention to detail. While the photographs capture the birds in amazing detail the excellent choices the Stokes have made to show regional, time of year, and age differences between sub-species make these guides a joy to use.
The identification tips are well written. Very handy when identifying gulls. Coupled with photographs of gulls at each year of development the daunting task of gull identification is made much simpler.
The regional identifications are a huge plus over other books. Pictures of Song Sparrows from New Hampshire, Ohio, British Columbia, California, and Alaska provide detailed insights into the differences between these birds based on region. Many other examples exist including eleven pictures of Dark-eyed Juncos - all of them unique and with purpose.
I've also found the raptor section to be very well done. Again, it appears that great effort was made to select photographs of raptors in positions that provide the best means of identification. There are 23 pictures of Red-tailed Hawks. Six of the photographs are the Harlan's group - with other guides you are lucky to get a single drawing or maybe a written description.
While "The Stokes Field Guide to the Birds of North America" is comprehensive with all birds of North America along with the rare visitors - the Eastern and Western editions of "The Stokes Field Guide to Birds" contain the birds you are likely to see in your region. The result is a much lighter book that is much more accessible while in the field.
I love birds and birding. The "Stokes Field Guide to the Birds of North America" has made me a much better birder which, in turn, has made birding much more enjoyable. I have many other bird guides but the Stokes guides are the ones I will use.

I am disappointed! ):
By Carol W.
I ordered this book as a copy for our RV. I currently have 1996 edition in our home. I was excited to see the new edition has more photos, HOWEVER, it NO longer includes the nesting information regarding each bird...not where they nest, how many eggs, time to hatch (incubation), time to fledge...nothing! The 1996 edition includes all of this information, but this new 2013 edition does not. Such an important part to include. I am so disappointed! I wish I had purchased a second copy of the first edition.
