Bought the complete series for my 12 yr old sister and she absolutely loved them all. She's a fan of mystery books so that was a perfect gift for her :) Thank you Pseudonymous Bosch for your brilliant mind and wonderful sense of humor. My sis wasn't too happy that the collection is complete and is still hoping that one day there will be a 6th book! lol. I absolutely recommend this book.

perfect for my 6 year old

My 6 year old son went to a friends skateboarding/scooter birthday party a few weeks ago. We bought him a skateboard helmet, and have been teaching him how to skateboard. He is reading on his own now, and I like to order books that are geared toward their personal interests, as they are generally more attentive and interested in reading such books. We usually do booktime every night before bed. I found my son sitting at his desk reading this book on his own after school. He really likes it! It's a reading level 3,so it is longer and more advanced than the step 1 or 2 books he usually does.

Michael Ruhlman started writing about the lives of chefs 20 years ago, and he soon found an interest in becoming a chef himself. Another winner from Ruhlman.

I am such a fan of Michael Ruhlman! I'll buy just about everyone of his cookbooks without even thinking twice. This one turned out to be no exception. I was concerned that it may just be a rehash of the chapter on roasting from "Twenty" but it dives so much deeper into the subject. Not a lot of recipes in here because its a technique book rather than a cookbook. I am ok with that because there are enough recipes out on the internet. Whats not on the internet is a detailed discussion on the craft of roasting.

I bought the Kindle version since the hardcover is shipping up to 3 weeks out. Not sure why that is but I really wanted the actual book since I have all of his others. The kindle version is good but I am slightly annoyed with how some of the captions to the photos do not line up with the photo on the page. This can make some of the pictures confusing until you figure out to turn the page for the correct caption. It's not enough for me to knock the book but it does remind me why I love kindle books for reading novels, cookbooks are often best when you have the actual book in your hand.

Looking forward to the rest of his technique books.

Another great cookbook by Ruhlman!

Again, I love Ruhlman. The recipes in this book center only around roasting. Roasting is an easy way to cook for entertaining or for a busy person. I was impressed that the cookbook includes all types of protein (fish, shellfish, pork, chicken, beef, etc), fruits and vegetables.

A few of the recipes are repeats (Cauliflower and chicken from Ruhlman's Twenty and Thanksgiving Turkey from his website). Both recipes I have made in the past and highly recommend. The roasted chicken recipe is a family and friend favorite and the simplest recipe I can think of; My husband swears it's restaurant quality.

I am making chicken stock today. I checked the Veal stock recipe for ideas. A few of the ingredients in the pictures (specifically aromatics) were left out of the ingredient list. Before making a shopping list, I would check all the pictures. I'm thankful the step by step pictures have returned.

Overall, it's a great addition to any cookbook library. The step by step pictures have returned too! I strongly recommend the cookbook. However, if you can only afford one Ruhlman cookbook in your collection, buy Ruhlman's Twenty.

Technique-based and informative

I'm a big fan of Ruhlman's writing, especially his cookbooks. This one is no exception.

There's a bit of overlap with some of his others, but it's minimal, and the very expanded information on the technique of roasting is something i welcome. Previous of his cookbooks have done much to improve my own kitchen skills, especially since he not only says what to do but WHY. This allows me to apply the techniques to other recipes.

On quibble- the table of contents is not especially informative or helpful; it consists only of "Intro", "Basics"; "Recipes", and "Equipment and Tools". This does not help one to find the info one needs in a more immediate way- for instance, if I want to roast pork. info on roasting peaches is probably irrelevant. Subdividing and making more explicit the sections would be helpful, especially in "Basics" and "Recipes". The index is some help with this, but is also pretty terse.

I was thrilled to get this book, and I look forward to incorporating some of its wisdom into making my Thanksgiving turkey.

Edited to add: I just finished reading it cover to cover today, though I have used several of the techniques from it. I was troubled that some of the photographs and/or their captions are dead wrong, and can be very confusing, such as in the roasted chicken picture tutorial where the photo of cutting the thigh from the drumstick was labeled as something to do with the wings; another was a picture in the section on roasting root veg that is captioned about bacon and bacon fat, but depicts basting a lamb rib roast. These were not the only 2 times such happened. I bought my copy early on; maybe this has been corrected in future printings, or at least in the ebook.

So much better than the Monster High "Young Adult" series!!!

I originally bought the Monster High "young adult" series of 4 books for my 8 year old niece who's a big Monster High fan. However, I was VERY disappointed at the messages those books reinforced over and over. I thought Monster High was about embrasing differences and being kind, but those books were exactly the opposite. They reinforced beauty over brains and being "mean/cool" over being nice. They reinforced that it is acceptable to make fun of boring, smart, "ugly" people but, heaven forbid if anyone makes fun of the gorgous, dim-witted Monsters!!! There was NOTHING in those books that was appropriate for the typical Monster High fan-base, namely 7-13 year old girls. btw, those 4 books went in the trash and will NOT be given to my niece. That's how bad they are. The woman who wrote them should really be ashamed of herself.

Then I found this book. I must say that THIS is what I thought Monster High is all about. The characters are kind and helpful and focus on friendship in the right ways. They are not overly concerned with looks, make-up or clothes. They are just genreally NICE characters! THIS book will be going to my niece as soon as I finish it!!! :-) I can't wait for THIS author to continue the series!!! Good job!!!

Scary Good Time!

I am an adult fan of Monster High. I collect the dolls and think the webisodes are adorable. Additionally I am a fan of all things paranormal as well as an avid reader. I was somewhat disappointed when I learned that Lisi Harrison's Monster High books were no longer being written and published. I then learned that a new Monster High book series was being released written by a different author. Then I became more concerned when I learned they were being marketed to a younger age group. I was really leery about "Ghoulfriends Forever"

I was positively surprised. This new series is much more true to the Monster High shows and doll line. I loved Headmistress Bloodgood losing her head now and then! I also really enjoyed seeing appearances by even some of the shows background characters. While I would have liked to see bigger roles by Cleo, Frankie, Ghoulia, Draculaura, Clawdeecn, and Lagoona, I did really enjoy getting to know the three newest Ghouls, Robecca, Venus, and adorable Rochelle. I also liked that they portrayed Monster High as having dorms for students who don't have families that reside in town. The cover of this book is breathtaking and I really liked the black and white drawings that opened each chapter.

What I wasn't so crazy about? The book wasn't too low of a reading level but I can see where younger fans more in the targer demographic will be able to read this book. It was still enjoyable reading for me but I would have liked the book to have been slightly more detailed. The mystery was solved very easily which is to be expected. Still this book was worth reading and I am glad that they will be releasing more installments.

It's Ghoul-rate!

This Book is awesome and yes I actually read it! First off The book itself is a nice size and perfect to take with you anywhere you want. The pages are easy to read and yet don't talk down on you at a grade school level ( like alot of Children's book do ). The artwork is fantastic and really does look like the characters, and gives just a little more for your imagination to work with, and BEST OF ALL, it actually takes place at MONSTER HIGH unlike the other books. SO if you want a good book or want to start reading Monster High the way it should be this book is for you, and I can't recommend it enough!

I haven't Given Up on Alex Cross but I may give up on James Patterson.

In the Authors notes at the end of this 450 page short story, James Patterson asks his readers not go give up on Alex Cross. If Patterson has to make plea to his loyal fans he already knows he hasn't given his fans what we have come to expect. I except that tragedy in life happens to good people Patterson asks his fans to believe and accept we are needing to have faith in the human spirit to pull us through a difficult or life changing event. He shouldn't have to tell us to keep the faith. We know it.

I feel you already have the next Alex Cross book written. Why should your fans have to buy another book to find out how this book should have ended.. To drag this out even for ten days is letting evil win. All of Alex Cross books have always taken fans though difficult situations and some cliff hangers. This is not a cliff hanger it is a stall Patterson is holding the ending hostage. I as a long time fan of all Patterson's books feel cheated. Patterson brings the reader through the story to the point that Alex pulls it together and is ready to go after Marcus Sunday and then the story just stops. Cross My Heart was a 5 star book up until the end of Chapter 112 when it dropped to a reluctant 2 star rating. I am sure your readers wouldn't mind if you had needed to expand Cross My Heart from 450 pages to 650 pages

You write a message telling us we will see another Alex Cross book. Of course we will see another Alex Cross book but will anyone want to buy the book. The fans were hung out to dry for a long time. For almost 14 months fans were waiting for the predictable ending to the Michael Bennett crisis. As a loyal fan I feel Patterson has not shown his loyal fans the respect we deserve.

i really enjoyed this volume it was great you finally get to see the details and how the mystery with sebastians death is all solved and how he did it and that hes still alive it was a set up. Things get even more interesting when Elizabeth offers ciel a ticket to the Campania overseas. Stuff start to happen when ciel and sebastian are on a case called ressurection and its about a group whos ressurecting the dead and things dont turn out so smoothly.

I took a long break from this series, and I shouldn’t have done that. The last volume ended on a slow note for me, I guess. And then I ended up picking this volume a little while ago, because I had some extra money with me (which almost never happens), and thought why not. And then I read the book and remembered why I love this series so much.

This series is just so exciting. The adventures are so fantastic, and perfectly horrific. And yet also very funny. The characters are great. The art is gorgeous. And now I have the next three volumes to read, so I’ve got to get this written up.

The first couple chapters feature Arthur Conan Doyle, who talks to Ciel and Sebastian, clearing up the whole mystery of the party. And then Snake, of the circus (that I love), shows up, and ends up taking a position in the mansion, surprisingly enough.

Then Elizabeth (Ciel’s fiancé, who I love) wants Ciel to go on a cruise with her, which he only agrees to because he has a case taking place within it. There are some rather humorous moments with Ciel, including with the Undertaker, who is also on board. But it turns out there’s a secret society on the ship, and someone claiming to be able to bring the dead back to life. And this ends with a cliffhanger featuring a rather horrific creature.

Excitement is sure to be ahead! And I’m excited!

On a side note, I just saw the cover of volume 13, and realized that Elizabeth is on it. And she’s on the cruise with Ciel. And she’s around a lot, when stuff is happening. And, you guys, I really just want her to find out and be a part of everything. Please? Can that please happen?

Well, I guess I’ll find out if it does.

On to the next volume!

Finally ties up the storyline from 9 and 10; very well done.

This is the 11th volume in the Black Butler series. I have been really enjoying this manga series overall. I thought volume 10 was weaker than the rest of the series. This volume is better again; although not as spectacular as some of the volumes before 10.

In this volume the events of the last two volumes are explained in detail with all revealed. Then Ciel and Sebastian end up on a cruise ship with Ciel’s intended. Most of the people think that Ciel is taking a well deserved break but little do they know that really Ciel is following rumors of the Aurora Society, a Society that claims to be able to wake the dead.

It was nice to have the events of the previous two volumes explained in detail (I was still a bit confused about why what happened happened in volume 10). I am also happy to have that story line tied up because, while it was very tongue in cheek and somewhat entertaining, I was ready to move on.

The last third of this book puts the reader in an interesting place. We are on a cruise ship with a society that claims to be able to raise the dead (oh boy...this scenario is just begging for trouble).

It was wonderful to have Sebastian back in the story. The Undertaker is also in the story for the last part of the book (he is one of my favorite characters).

The illustration continues to be beautifully done. I really enjoy the high quality and entertainment value of these mangas.

Overall an excellent continuation of this manga series. I continue to find this manga series highly entertaining and very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend to those who enjoy Victorian paranormal themes to their manga.

This is one heck of a beautiful book--A real stunner!

If you haven't read George P. Pelecanos, you're missing one hell of an experience! This is easily his best book and that's saying alot, since he's yet to make a misstep with any of his crime/detective novels.
_The Sweet Forever_ is a beautifully- done book (one of the jacket blurbs likens it to a crime-thriller version of _Bonfire of the Vanities_, a particularly apt comparison, I think). It is the second book to feature the team of Dimitri Karras/Marcus Clay (first introduced in _King Suckerman_), two old friends now running a chain of D.C.-based record stores.
The book is set in 1986, when cocaine was at its peak of popularity and just before the advent of crack. The streets of Washington D. C. are growing ever more dangerous and the town continues to dwindle and wither away, ignored by a corrupt, drug-using mayor and his regime.
Dimitri and Marcus run afoul of a gang of cocaine runners in the neighborhood of Marcus' new store,located in a particularly run-down part of the city. He's trying to put something back into the community, so he's willing to put up with slow sales. But when the gang members start pushing around young kids in the area, Marcus gets involved, almost against his better judgement.
One of the neat things about the book is that Dimitri himself is hooked on cocaine and his habit is dragging him down further and further, only he himself is not aware of this yet. The novel gets only that much more morally complex when one of the two leads is involved, however slightly, in the very drug trade that is ruining the city and which the characters must battle with.
There are so many great scenes here and great characters. Marcus has a huge heart and is willing to go out on the line for people that some might ignore or turn their backs on. Add in a corrupt cop whose conscience keeps digging at him and a drug runner who isn't sure about what he's doing, and you've got one memorable mixture.
I'm a sucker for emotional movies, I'll admit. Play my heartstrings and I get a lump in my throat just like that. But I very seldom, if ever, have the same response to the written word. When reading this book, however, I had more "throat-lump" moments than I could keep track of. This is very highly recommended and a perfect example of how the lowly "crime thriller" can operate far outside the boundaries of its genre. This is literature, folks!

What else would you be looking for in a crime novel?

This is a flat out terrific book. Pelecanos weaves an intriguing story about a search for some stolen drug money, a battle for control of a neighborhood and a number of characters looking for a different direction for their lives. The scene descriptions are vivid and the character development is superb. Exactly what else would you be looking for in a crime novel?
As a confirmed Pelecanos fan now after reading several of his books, I'd recommend a couple of things to anyone considering reading his work. First, if you like tough, gritty crime novels, definitely read his work. It is excellent. Second, I think you're better off by reading the old stuff before the newer work. The reason for this is that a number of the characters appear in multiple books and if you know a character will show up in a later work as an older person, you know they didn't get killed in the earlier work.

At the top of his genre...

Set in Washington DC in the last 1980s, this is a very well done cops and robbers genre detective novel - but then it is much more. Part of why I loved this book was because it was set in a city I know so well that it was a little like being at home. The characters in Pelecanos' story are dirty cops, drug runners and pushers, a couple of record store managers, a couple of street kids (who might or might not go bad), and a backdrop of March Madness in a city that was cheering on the magnificent Len Bias (at U Maryland) the year he suddenly dropped dead (weak heart + cocaine) at the tender age of 22. The book opens with a number of interesting witnesses to a horrible car crash on U Street in which the driver (a drug-runner, we later learn) is decapitated, and the bag containing all his money is snatched impetuously out of the back seat by a bystander who regrets it later. The tale weaves in and out of, primarily, Marcus Clay's (the record store owner) and his buddy, Dimitri Karras's (the manager of the stores) lives during these events. The prose is excellent for a crime novel, and I am eager to continue reading Pelecanos.

About the Author
Lara Santoro spent most of her career as a foreign news correspondent, based primarily in Rome and in Nairobi working for Newsweek and the Christian Science Monitor. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Comparative Literature from Smith College, a Master's degree in French Literature from the Sorbonne, and a Master's in Fine Arts from New York University. She was born in Rome, and currently lives in New Mexico. She is the author of one previous novel, Mercy.

"the reckless vault across generational lines."

This story riveted my attention from the first paragraph. Anna is an immensely knowable character. She has a child for whom she has devoted her life after the early year of post partum depression. In fact, "If motherhood leaves a residue from one lifetime to the next, a sort of encoded knowledge best deciphered at he direst times, Anna had every reason. To suspect she was on round number one."

Her daughter Eva is the organized one, the one who remembers due dates on books and when to pay fees. Anna finds herself living the straight and narrow. Until the night she meets the boy. He is the son of a dear friend, just graduated from college, and preternaturally wise.

From the first meeting of eyes she knows to stay away. And her struggles are the stuff of life. She unsuccessfully tries to ward off the incursion of Sonic slushies and frito pies into the diets of her slender daughter and not so skinny housekeeper. The women visit the "female river that flows north.". They act out Bladerunner, although Anna has never seen it.

The language of this book is seductive in its leading us through the story. The land in the American southwest sets a backdrop both sere and deep with secrets. The boy is a potentiality, older than the age of consent but younger than prudence and the rhythm of her days. In vignettes of words, Santoro draws her story and impels us to follow.

A fast read. Warning for those who like cliff jumping.

This book is slim and reads very fast. Middle-aged Anna and her daughter have fled from the girl's father and moved across the ocean to start a new life. The girl is unusually perceptive and stubborn about certain things. She seems to have become the adult in this dysfunctional relationship. Her sensible warnings seem to foretell that things won't end well. At a party, Anna comes across the young (20) son of her neighbor. He makes an impression that sticks and Anna now has to decide if she'll let him push his way into her and her daughter's lives. Her judgment seemed to be off-kilter to start and now she's allowed Jim Beam to weigh in with his opinion. Are we now racing to an inevitable conclusion? I enjoyed the spot on dialogue between mother and daughter. The conclusion seemed to come up very fast and race to an unsettling end.

Lara Santoro fulfills the writing promise of her first novel, Mercy, with this skillful rendering of a tale about motherhood, sexual longing, and the consequences of mixing the two. The New Mexican scenes and seasons provide a rich setting for the protagonist's variously satisfying and harsh life and choices. Tension ripples through the carefully calibrated dialogue that spirits the reader along on a compelling tale about female strength and weakness that should put the author in league with the best novelists before her who have tackled these themes, perhaps with less honesty. Her spirited character, Anna, is painted neither black nor white but cloaked in the complex shadings of lovingness, selfishness, desire, regret, and conviction that we all recognize in ourselves.

Conflicting Messages

I bought this for my 8 year old niece because we are both big fans of all things monster (anything Tim Burton is okay by us). Before handing them over, I decided to read them first. Thank goodness I did.
The books promote VERY conflicting messages for young girls. The characters are supposed to be promoting "being true to yourself" and "it's okay to be different"; however, all the girls in the books talk about is how they look, what clothes they are wearing, and the size they are (one character brags that she's a "zero on the bottom and a large on the top"). The first book's plot centers around a love triangle and a girl trying to steal another girl's boyfriend. And while they whine about how they are not accepted for being different, they constantly make fun of anyone who doesn't dress or look "cool". I really don't know if I should give these books to my niece - - they don't re-inforce ANY values that I believe in.
By the way, I would consider the difficulty of the writing to be at around a 5th-7th grade level. I'm sure my 8 year old niece will be able to get through it because she's always been an advanced reader, but I really wouldn't recommend it for anyone younger than 8 or 9.

Be wary of the age of the child...

Highly, HIGHLY inappropriate content for anyone younger than 12/13. These books are NOT based on the characters that your girls have seen in the webisodes, which are created for a much younger audience. I bought these for my 11-year old MH fan--good thing i flipped through them first. Extremely inappropriate. Written for late middle school, early high-school age--which I thought was odd: they're written on a low reading level, but higher maturity level. Just beware, parents!

Nice book set; great for young girls!

I bought these books for my step-daughter. She loves Monster High, and she’s going through a phase where she hates reading. So, I’m trying to get her books she’s interested in so she will read.

The books are a nice quality, and they come in a sleeve that holds the set, which includes the first four books in the series. They’re nice chapter books with a few drawings scattered throughout. The print size is similar to that of the print size in adult books (see attached picture), and each book has almost 250 pages. It should take her quite a while to read each book.

Her birthday is a couple of weeks away, and these are a gift; I’ll update my review once she has started reading them to let you know what she says.
