Zombie Titanic - An Odd Concept Done Right
By Amazon Customer
Kuroshitsuji (aka "Black Butler") is my favorite manga series, it has great art, and an intricate, well written story-line. (If you just watch the anime you will miss out on almost all of it by the way. The manga is well worth reading!) As stated, there is a fair amount of interesting back-story in this volume and new details about several characters. I would definitely recommend reading this volume and all of this series.

So, so good
By Jude
~4.5/5

[More of my reviews are available on my blog, Geeky Reading, to which there's a link on my profile.]

I’m so sorry that it took so long for me to get back to this series (to both Black Butler/Yana Toboso and Yen Press). But I’m so glad that I picked it up again, and that I have the next book already. This series is just killing me, it’s so good. And this volume… this volume was the best.

There is finally some backstory to Elizabeth. I love her. I have been a big fan of her for a long time, and have wanted to get to know her more, and finally it is happening. And it is so good. It’s even better than I thought it’d be, and it makes me love her even more. I don’t want to spoil too much, though, so I won’t go into detail. Aside from saying that what happens with her in this book is awesome.

And then we move forward, and there’s this big reveal with the Undertaker. Then a reveal about the zombies, which is a big surprise. All the while the ship is sinking, and Sebastian and the grim reapers are fighting. It’s all one big, exciting mess, and it’s fantastic. Which ends with a really bad thing for Sebastian and Ciel, in a cliffhanger. But we’re left guessing on that as we get flashbacks, from Sebastian, of when he and Ciel first met.

I was not expecting these flashbacks at all, and I loved getting inside Sebastian’s head. He’s such an ass, and he’s obviously frustrated. Ciel is being bratty and picky and trying to be tough, and he’s adorable. They were in such a different place then, mentally and in their relationship, just getting to know each other and all. It was adorable and hilarious. I really hope there’s more in the next volume, but at the same time, I really want to know what’s happening in the present.

Either way, I’m loving it.

Oh, on a sidenote: I really love the humor in this series. Toboso is funny in her little sidenotes, but my favorite parts of it are on the back of the cover, where she draws comedic parodies of the cover, and then at the inside of the back cover, where she draws little scenarios for the characters, like this one where they were a spy operation (Michaelis operation, run by Sebastian, to save kittens) and how she ends all of them with “…or something.”. I hadn’t noticed them at the beginning of the series, but now they get a smile out of me every time.

I honestly HATE that! Too often I find that when I'm ...
By Patrick Lechner
Let me state quite clearly that I will NOT post any spoilers in this review. I honestly HATE that! Too often I find that when I'm reading reviews to find out what people think of an author or series most of them are riddled with spoilers.

I received my copy of A Dance of Ghosts when I returned from a two week house sitting vacation. Eagerly I plowed into the book and within an hour and forty five minutes found myself 240 pages in. This is where I had to stop myself. I needed to space it out let the story and awesomeness savor in my mind, that lasted all of a day.

If you've read any of David's previous works, and let's be honest, you must have, because this is book five of one series set within a multitude of books within the same world, then you will love this one.

I remember clearly when I had first gotten the Shadowdance Trilogy for my e-reader. Finding my insomnia once again getting the better of me, I restlessly awoke at 3AM, fired up my reader and began A Dance of Cloaks. By 10 AM that morning I had finished all three books of the trilogy. Eagerly I then hunted for, acquired, and devoured almost everything else I could find written by him. I believe I read nearly everything he had published within three weeks.

When I e-mailed and asked him if I could get a copy via Pyapaling him the money and requesting it autographed, the answer of course was yes. Thus we flash forward to where I acquired the book almost an entire month prior to it's release. At first, my initial thoughts were that it wouldn't be as easy to read through being that it was the actual book and not and e-book. Cause let's face it e-books make reading so much easier and faster. However, as I found out, anything written by David whether it be in book form, or e-book form I devour at an equal pace.

The way the scenes, action, dialogue and characters are written are so engaging that they make me feel as though I'm there with them rather than simply reading a story. I love all the characters, but most memorable to me probably because he was from the first book I had read was Haern. I mean bad ass warrior good guy's are always awesome, right? Right, of course. So thankfully we have this brand new novel in Haern's series to tide over till the finale of Dance of Chaos. Now I'm besot with myself for having to wait to read the final book of the series. I am always recommending David's books to my friends who like fantasy and am pushing the author himself to get his work done with GraphicAudio, because, they're awesome as well.

I highly recommend this to everyone who likes the rest of the series, and if you're new to the series or author by all means check out the rest of his world/work, you won't be disappointed I assure you.

A Dance of Ghosts
By johnchris
David Dalglish has done it again (and even better I might add)!
This is a great book to read after The Breaking World Series. The reader gets a greater understanding of Ashur and Karak in those books and it translates well here.
There are callbacks to a number of previous books and characters with more than a few mind-blowing surprises.
The characters are complex and at times frustrating. I was pretty angry at Thren, and Haern by the end of this one.
As per usual, there is quite a bit of intrigue to go along with the swordplay. This book has an overwhelming sense of tragedy and foreboding. I can't recommend it highly enough!

and am delighted to see the initial stories fleshed out and expanded
By Diggidy
I have been a reader of Dalglish's books for a few years now, and am delighted to see the initial stories fleshed out and expanded. This is definitely the best so far, and really lets you begin to feel the characters grow in meaningful ways. David has progressed tremendously as an author, and his fictional world is growing in scope and depth. I plan on staying with the world of Dezrel until David is finished writing.

NO Spoilers - but Haern and Thren are a fairly dysfunctional family!

Caldecott Medalist Dan Santat takes readers on the road trip of a lifetime!
"Are we there yet?" Every parent has heard this classic kid question on a long car ride--and after reading this astonishingly inventive new book (that even turns upside down for several pages!), you'll never look at being bored the same way again.

Let's face it: everyone knows that car rides can be boring. And when things get boring, time slows down. In this book, a boy feels time slowing down so much that it starts going backward--into the time of pirates! Of princesses! Of dinosaurs! The boy was just trying to get to his grandmother's birthday party, but instead he's traveling through Ancient Egypt and rubbing shoulders with Ben Franklin. When time flies, who knows where--or when--he'll end up.

Amusing.
By Heidi Grange
Dan Santat has chosen to address a pretty common childhood experience, but in a very uncommon way. On his way to his grandmother's birthday party, a young boy asks his parents, "Are we there yet?" The looks on his parents' faces makes it clear this isn't the first time he has asked. Like many people on a road trip, the boy has quickly become bored. But things pick up on the next spread as the boy lets his imagination go on a trip of its own. These spreads where the boy imagines himself and his family in a variety of different stories makes for an interesting read aloud, as these pages are technically, upside down. On the other hand it makes for a different sort of reading experience turning the book, end over end, almost like one feels on a mind-numbingly long road trip. Another addition to the story is the QR codes included in some of the pictures which take the reader to games on the internet. And I have to say that the ending is so typical of childhood that I literally laughed out loud. Santat has created an imaginative, very relatable book about a common childhood experience turned on it's head.

Not a book I would buy again

Kind of an odd book. My kids didn't even sit through the whole thing. It is written where half way through it goes upside down. My kids range from 9-2 and none of them liked it.

Still rather good
By Jude
~3.5/5
[Also available on my blog.]

This volume continued the murder mystery from the last, and I'm a bit upset about this, but my enthusiasm for this series has lessened a little bit. I still like it, but I really want to like it more. I just hope that it kicks back up.

So, (Sir) Arther (Conan Doyle) is still trying to solve the mystery, with Ciel and others pushing him and each other, and some of the others are freaking out over not knowing who it is. They've got three, including Sebastian, dead, and none of the clues are adding up to one person. The servants (aww, I love them, and they're crying...) are freaking out a bit, wanting to help but not sure what to do without Sebastian's guidance, but Tanaka is doing fantastic by taking over his spot for the moment.

And then, oh no!, someone new shows up and he's suspicious, but Ciel knows him and his name is Jeremy, and it turns out that Sebastian called for him with the bird from the last volume. He's here to help. He looks over the crime scenes and the dead bodies, and all of the guests look through each other's suitcases, thinking maybe someone is hiding a clue, but nothing really helpful is found. One of the guests (who works for the queen) has to sneak back to look at Sebastian's body, thinking that maybe he's not dead, but he is. And then they set Ciel up, thinking that the killer is out for him.

And then we find out who the killer is, and, while I will not spoil this, it was not as exciting as I'd been hoping. Not bad, but not as thrilling a scene as I wanted, although the ending of the volume is very nice. All of the guests leave, but Arthur is suspicious of Jeremy, because of something he said, so he rushes back to the manor, barges inside, and speaks of his suspicions. And then we (Arthur) see that Jeremy is actually not Jeremy but---! And while I know who Jeremy actually is, I will not spoil who he actually is, leaving some questions for those who have not yet read the book. But it's actually rather exciting, and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with Arthur. Is he going to be sticking around for a bit longer? I hope so, as I do rather like him.

Also, is Jeremy an actual person that Ciel knows, then, or is he just a character that someone pretends to be every once in a while? I'm curious.

I'm sure some new story line will be started in the new volume, and I look forward to that. I do not have the next book yet, as I am slow, and it might be a while, but I'm sure it'll be good.

Weakest book of the series so far, but still pretty good.
By Karissa Eckert
This is the 10th volume in the Black Butler series. I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as previous volumes but it was still very entertaining.

This volume continues the story starting in Volume 9. Mysterious murders have been happening in the Phantomhive Manor and the guests (as well as the murderer) are trapped in the Manor by a vicious storm that is raging outside. Then a mysterious thirteenth guest arrives, a vicar who is very Sherlock Holmes like. He helps the guests unravel the twisted plot of murder and mayhem that has been plaguing them.

Probably the most fun part of the story was watching Tanaka in action. The rest of the story was a bunch of twisty turny accusations and the reveal of a fairly convoluted plot. It was engaging and interesting but not quite as wilding entertaining as previous volumes have been.

The whole book (this and the last one) is a sort of ode to Sherlock Holmes stories. It was a cute concept, but I am ready to move on to more interesting paranormal and demonic adventures.

I missed Sebastian, and Ciel kind of played a backseat to other characters as well. This definitely ended up being one of the weaker books in this series so far.

The illustration is still top notch with beautiful attention to detail. I did still enjoy the story, I just didn’t absolutely love it like I have with other volumes.

Overall this was a good continuation of this series. I enjoyed it although not as much as other volumes. This volume did a good job of wrapping up the story started in volume 9. I look forward to seeing what volume 11 holds for readers. I would recommend this manga series to those who enjoy paranormal/Victorian themed mangas.

Black Mischief, by Evelyn Waugh

"We are Progress and the New Age. Nothing can stand in our way." When Oxford-educated Emperor Seth succeeds to the throne of the African state of Azania, he has a tough job on his hands. His subjects are ill-informed and unruly, and corruption, double-dealing, and bloodshed are rife. However, with the aid of Minister of Modernization Basil Seal, Seth plans to introduce his people to the civilized ways of the west-but will it be as simple as that? Profound hilarity ensues from the issuance of homemade currency, the staging of a "Birth Control Gala," the rightful ruler's demise at his own rather long and tiring coronation ceremonies, and a good deal more mischief.

The Great Waugh
By Paul Goring
I suspect this classic novel is out of print in the US for reasons of misguided political correctness, which is a great shame for this is probably Waugh's finest and funniest novel. (Penguin Books in the UK publish a copy which is available on the www.amazon.co.uk site).
Black, Oxford-educated Seth ("Emperor of Azania,Chief of the Chiefs of Sakuyu, Lord of Wanda and Tyrant of the Seas, Bachelor of the Arts of Oxford University")attempts to reform his backward, corrupt African nation with the aid of an amoral Englishman, Basil Seal. This being Waugh, all ends hilariously tragically. All the usual Waugh-like elements are here: the "disappearing hero" (ie non-active protagonist); the comic but desperately tragic fate of the main characters; the utterly misogynistic & unsympathetic view of all mankind; and all written with his usual, biting, elegant, hilarious satire. This novel is not racist. It may be a trifle politically incorrect to our enlightened generation (political correctness of course meaning that we think it but don't say it)but as with all novels more than 20 years old we have to read it in the light of the attitudes and opinions of the era in which it is written and this novel is a very accurate and funny reflection of the attitudes of the 1930's.
Despite the novel's title, the satire is aimed at all races and ethnic groups, with the white British Legation (portrayed as ignorant, inane, out-of-touch idiots) coming in for the bitterest attacks. Indeed, if our sympathies lie anywhere, it is with the well-meaning, likeable but ultimately ill-advised black emperor, Seth. Waugh was possibly the greatest and sharpest satirist of the 20th Century and this is possibly his greatest and sharpest novel. As an Englishman, I feel it is very sad that American readers are denied access to this classic work. ("If we can't stamp out literature in the country we can at least stop it being brought in from outside" - Evelyn Waugh, 'Vile Bodies')
Such advocates of political correctness should perhaps adopt Seth's own slogan for his doomed campaign "We are Progess and the New Age. Nothing can stand in our way." Read this novel - order it from the UK site if necessary - & judge it for yourself. I guarantee you a good read.

Exotic Madness!
By L. Dann
The only humor today that even comes close to that of Black Mischief, is ironically, that of the outrageous, black comedians- otherwise Waugh rules.
The whole concept of the British in exotic countries is a farce, and when mixed with Waugh's equally lunatic native characters face to face with bizarre and inexplicable Western civilization- whew- anything could and does happen. There are no noble characters, of course, but redeeming fools, which is about as good as one can get in a Wauvian satire. My favorites are the animal rights ladies who come to Africa to see that the natives are treating their livestock well. These ladies, one named Miss Tin, land in the midst of a revolution and have to hit a driver in the head with a brandy bottle to get a ride to the English settlement. They followed a fellow anti-vivesectionist cleric who led the ministry of our `dumb chums.'
There is every kind of European religion stirring up trouble and as usual, the British are completely sequestered amongst themselves preoccupied with their gardens and other habits in blissful and selfish ignorance. The leader of these Imperialists is described as "a self-assured old booby." One of the titled females is named `Lady Everyman.'
The political relevance is so acute that it seems impossible that this was written in 1932. Waugh even seems to have some political consciousness in this book, certainly, he is gentler, on the whole while being enduringly funny. I would definitely place this as my second favorite Waugh. It has a gripping end and is a statement less of bigotry, (of which he probably was one, but who wasn't,) but also of the need to reevaluate what in the name of God all of the colonizing was about.

Deadly Satire
By A Customer
Having recently read a review of some of Waugh's works in the Weekly Standard that mentioned that Black Mischief ( affectionately known to afficionados as BM) was out of print, I dug out a mid-1960s double paperback edition from Dell Publishing to find out how racist or politically incorrect it could possibly be. To my delight, the writing is crisp and wicked; I finished it in two days, laughing aloud at least three times.
This was more than 30 years after I originally read this novel. The portrait of colonialism and the folly of progress shines through quite as much as its utter lack of sentimentality about human beings. If anything, I came away this time with more sympathy for Basil Seal, the Emperor Seth and the savage tribesmen as tragic figures doomed in the first two cases by their own delusions of creating the future and in the last case, the lack of understanding of their inevitable doom. Of course this book should be republished and reread.
A few racist words written in the context of the early 1930s should not deter us from enjoying pure misogynist fun.

A Perfectly Messed-Up Story, by Patrick McDonnell

In this interactive and engaging read-aloud, bestselling author and award-winning artist Patrick McDonnell creates a funny, engaging, and almost perfect story about embracing life's messes.
Little Louie's story keeps getting messed up, and he's not happy about it! What's the point of telling his tale if he can't tell it perfectly? But when he stops and takes a deep breath, he realizes that everything is actually just fine, and his story is a good one--imperfections and all.

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1—Beloved Mutts comic-strip illustrator McDonnell brings children a story about how even the most perfect things can sometimes become…well, messed up. Louie sets out to tell his happy tale about skipping and singing when suddenly a jelly blob interrupts his cheerful narrative. This is soon followed by a peanut butter ("AUGH! The chunky kind!") mess. Louie is horrified that someone would treat his story so carelessly. As the mess builds, Louie becomes more and more anxious, until a really big mess causes him to give up. "I'm just a messy old book…no one will ever want, read, or love," he cries. He soon learns a wise lesson; it is the story that makes the book, not the mess. Life is not without imperfections, and neither are stories. Classic McDonnell pen, ink, and watercolor pastels blend with mixed-media and crayon messes to make this untidy tale a victory for unkempt books everywhere. Keep calm, and read on!—Carol Connor, Cincinnati Public Schools, OH

Funny funny funny.....and cute....and inspiring.
By J.Prather
A Perfectly Messed-Up Story is a delightful testament to perseverance and the importance of maintaining a positive outlook even when things aren't going your way. More important than all of that though is the fact that this book is just flat out funny. Laugh out loud funny. Patrick McDonnell has proven time and time again that he fully understands the concept of whimsy, but he takes it to a new level with this messy little interactive book.

Little Louie is eager to tell his story, but things just aren't going as planned. Whether it's a plop of jelly, or a smear of peanut butter (chunky kind!) that lands on his head, Louie just keeps getting interrupted. Fingerprints and scribbles magically appear on the page as Louie addresses the reader directly, telling him that "we need to show some respect here. Books are important. They teach us stuff and They inspire us." That part touched my heart.

We never get to read Louie's story, but that's okay, since we do get to find out that no matter how many jelly stains plop in your book, you can still go singing merrily along. The story is told via Louie's hilarious, over the top dramatic reactions that are portrayed in dialogue bubbles. I'm still not sure if I could make this work in story time, but I do know that this is a must read for any preschooler. It has a great message, McDonnell's illustrations are as charming and expressive as ever, and it will give you a great opportunity to share a hearty laugh with your child. Great stuff.

Delightful, funny, and memorable tale about when things aren't perfect
By James Korsmo
This is a delightfully funny story. My kids (seven and four) love it. There is always a lot of laughter. Louie is a simple but delightful main character. He is greatly upset when his story is ruined by careless intrusions (such as peanut butter and jelly being spilled on his pages) from outside. The story restarts, only to be marred once again. Louie's frustration leads him to quit (what parent hasn't encountered that phenomenon), so he sits out the third telling of the story (my kids love this part). But he realizes in the end that, despite the truly frustrating intrusions and the resulting imperfections of his story, everything is fine. In fact, it all turns out pretty good.

The illustrations are outstanding, and the realism of the "intrusions" (fingerprints, spilled orange juice, etc.) are perfect. Kids can even participate (on one page a paper towel is rubbed on some scribbles, for instance). And underneath the delightfully entertaining story, there is a really key lesson, that we need to learn to go on even when things aren't perfect, and in fact even less than ideal things can turn out just fine and still be satisfying. I know my kids need to learn this lesson, and I hope this book provides a subtle but memorable influence in that direction.

Look on the bright side of life
By Storywraps
Happy little Louie is walking along, singing to himself and minding his own business. He is trying to get his story started when plop....a huge goop of jelly comes out of nowhere and splats on his book page. Now where did that come from? How rude! Then almost immediately after, a big blob of peanut butter splatters...right on Louie's head! Yuk! It's the disgusting chunky kind (which happens to be my most favourite, but I do digress....sorry!)

Louie is getting more and more angry and thinks enough is enough already. But enough already it isn't. Orange juice descends from above leaving a huge, orange stain on his page, followed by icky, sticky fingerprints and the pièce de résistance? .... crayon scribbles!!! Ok, that's really crossing the line now thinks Louie. Get the paper towel reader, I've had it. Louie lays down in utter exasperation and despair. He gives himself a timeout. His story is ruined, his life is over, now no one will ever read his messy, grungy story....ever!!

But as Louie reflects on his dilemma he learns a very valuable life lesson. He goes on with his story and realizes it is good after all. It is received well even with the blemishes imposed upon it. He understands that like his book, life can get messed up and yet your story still can turn out pretty darn good if you keep on singing and moving forward even when difficulties rain down upon you .

The illustrations are expressive and the word bubbles add so much richness to the storyline. This interactive story is a perfect read-aloud bringing laughter to both young and old. I highly recommend this book.

Killer Ambition (A Rachel Knight Novel), by Marcia Clark

Los Angeles D.A. Rachel Knight faces down the murderously ambitious side of Hollywood in Marcia Clark's newest thriller.
When the daughter of a billionaire Hollywood director is found murdered after what appears to be a kidnapping gone wrong, Los Angeles Special Trials prosecutor Rachel Knight and Detective Bailey Keller find themselves at the epicenter of a combustible and high-profile court case. Then a prime suspect is revealed to be one of Hollywood's most popular and powerful talent managers--and best friend to the victim's father. With the director vouching for the manager's innocence, the Hollywood media machine commences an all-out war designed to discredit both Rachel and her case.
Killer Ambition is at once a thrilling ride through the darker side of Tinseltown and a stunning courtroom drama with the brilliant insider's perspective that Marcia Clark is uniquely qualified to give.

From Publishers Weekly
In the latest installment in Clark's series that follows the adventures of Special Trials DA Rachel Knight—and features Rachel's best girlfriend, Detective Bailey Keller—the kidnapping/murder of the daughter of a powerful Hollywood producer and director is followed by even more lawlessness. Throughout it all, the author infuses the book with moments of genuine suspense and wry humor. Narrator January LaVoy smoothly conveys the author's lighthearted cynicism. She ably captures Knight, and for Keller, LaVoy lowers her voice, adding a flat, careful, dogmatic pronunciation that both relaxes and quickens during her snappy discussions with Knight. As for the book's male characters, LaVoy opts for a minimal, vaguely masculine tone, with one exception. Clark describes the arrogant, angry filmmaker as short with a voice high enough for him to be mistaken for a female. LaVoy adds her own amusing touch by giving him the sound and the bark of a human Chihuahua. A Mulholland hardcover. (June)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* With her third legal thriller featuring L.A. Deputy DA Rachel Knight, former prosecutor Clark delivers another winner. Here the author’s alterego becomes involved with Hollywood royalty and all the media attention it entails. It starts when Knight and Detective Bailey Keller begin working on the kidnapping of teenager Hayley Antonovich, only child of megaproducer Russell Antonovich. While the kidnapping turns out to be a ruse devised by Hayley and her boyfriend involving a dispute over the rights to a screenplay, it leads to murder. Trusting forensic evidence, Knight charges a Hollywood insider, a former child star who has become a pillar of the community, with the crimes, thus facing career-ending professional exile if she loses. As the media barrage intensifies, with Knight accused of acting only to get herself in the spotlight, Clark ratchets up the suspense at every turn, with even jury selection becoming a nail-biter. Boasting a feisty protagonist, a winning supporting cast, and steadily escalating courtroom drama, Killer Ambition finds Clark at the top of her game. Legal thrillers don’t get much better than this. --Michele Leber

Great Summer Read
By bookandartlover
Rachel Knight (and company) will keep you turning the pages. I love the mix of investigative work and courtroom drama bound together by smart and many times funny dialogue. If you've read other of the Rachel books, or even if you haven't, this one will not disappoint. The small, but highly entertaining, details about food and drink, clothing, interior design, plus terrific character development give this book wonderful appeal and heart. Can't wait for the next one!

Absolutely fantastic book, perfect for any reader

Marcia Clark never fails to impress! Her writing style is fluid, engaging, and accessible without being too simplistic. Most importantly, her experience in the field is tangible throughout every situation in her books -- it's fantastic.

Clark's work has contributed some of the best novels this genre has seen, and Killer Ambition carries the torch one installment further.

If you haven't read her other two, you'll still love this one, but I highly recommend you keep up with the series! Truly excellent stuff here for any kind of reader!
