A Absolute Joy

Helen is a normal teenage girl. She's smart. She's funny. She's got some mild body image issues. And she's a Minotaur (or Enchanted American, in the parlance of their times). Troy's your average overachieving, handsome, athletic, likeable Asian American guy.

When their boss at their after school job tries to sacrifice Helen, Helen & Troy are thrust together on a quest by the Lost God. They are aided by the shadowy agents of the Questing Bureau, as well as an assortment of oddball characters they meet along the way.

The plot thickens when the Wild Hunt motorcycle gang is compelled to stop them. Don't hold the fact that they are Orcs against them. Most of the bikers are office workers during the week, and only get out riding on the weekends. Nevertheless, they have their heritage to live up to, and will stop at almost nothing to stop Helen & Troy's success.

Helen & Troy's Epic Road Quest is an absolute joy. Martinez manages to balance character and plot exceedingly well, while keeping his tongue firmly planted in cheek. You want action and adventure? You've got it! You want emotional growth or a will they or won't they romance? You've got it! You want laughs and winking references to a myriad of genre & related items? Well they're thrown in as well!

I love how A. Lee Martinez can mix up improbable characters, unbelievable situations, throw in a touch of philosophy and mythology and brew up an entertaining and endearing tale. Helen and Troy's Epic Road Quest is a strange brew of a read. Very enjoyable!

Masterful Comedy/Fantasy/Adventure Quest/Romance/Comedy(again)

Helen, an Enchanted American Minotaur and Troy, a perfect boy with some demi-god in the family tree, are sent on an Epic Quest by a Lost God, and the result is a road trip that could have been choreographed by Terry Pratchett - funny Neal Gaiman - Douglas Adams - Hunter Thompson - and a handful of the Simpsons and South Park writers. It's that good.

There are lots of great reviews of the book, by professionals and by fans, but two points should be made.

The first is that as funny as the book is, and as zany as the plotting and action can be, a lot of the humor is pretty dry and deadpan. The banter and the throwaway lines are tight, efficient and sharp. This fits in with the second more important point. The book screams along at a breakneck pace. There are no lengthy setups and no joke or bit is belabored. The characters, dialogue, and action just keep breezing along, taking shots at every target imaginable as the quest barrels down the road. By the same token, cameos and guest appearances and inside jokes are brief, effective, to the point, and then left by the roadside. The book isn't hectic or disorganized or scatterbrained - it is just as streamlined and fine tuned as a racecar. Or a souped up clown car.

This is just Martinez at the top of his game, and it doesn't get better than that.

About the Author
Michael Cobley was born in Leicester, England and has lived in Glasgow, Scotland for most of his life. He has studied engineering, been a DJ and has an abiding interest in democratic politics.

His previous books include the Shadowkings dark fantasy trilogy and Iron Mosaic, a short story collection. Seeds of Earth, The Orphaned Worlds, and The Ascendant Stars, books one, two and three of the Humanity's Fire sequence, were his first full-length forays into space opera.

A little bit of everything

The UK reviews on this book are mixed. I admit, this book is not perfect and the story - not original. However, if you like Greg Bear, Larry Niven and Orson Scott Card, you should like this book. Those influences are omnipresent in this vast story. Darien will remind readers of Lamarckia from Bear's novel Legacy, a sequel to EON. Some the mechanicals and aliens could have been lifted right from Niven's Ringworld (one in particular reminds me of the puppeteer). The politics are oh so Ender in Exile and beyond from Card. Some people find their novel and reread it over and over. If that's you, stick with Bear, Niven and Card. I wouldn't recommend this one over any of the aforementioned. But, I do recommend this one, nevertheless.

I for one don't mind old themes, characters, and plots presented in a different manner. Cobley tells a great story that is immense in scope. He has this unique ability to introduce a tidbit of back story (the such and such war or the XYZ race) without wasting pages upon pages of filler when all that is needed is the reference to give the reader the ability to fill more with imagination. For the most part, the characters are rich and interesting and the prose is well paced. If you are looking for a familiar friend in the world of Space epics (i don't like the reference to Space Opera because everyone has a different definition of what that is), try this out.

A clunky first effort

Call me churlish, but when a book has a quote from Iain M. Banks on the cover declaring "Proper galaxy-spanning Space Opera" then I'm going to expect something along the lines of a Banks novel.

But unfortunately, "Seeds of Earth" aint that.

Sure it's a weighty novel, chock full of characters - both alien and human - and a series of set piece chapters...but it is missing the subtle emotional threads that tie the mosaic together, and more importantly for me, it is missing the depth of vision that makes for outstanding science fiction.

Cobley populates the galaxy in what seems to be a near future timeline with dozens of alien species (one of which aggressively attacks Earth in the 'first contact' scenario that opens the book) that have come and gone with numerous wars over millenia. Given the energies involved in these wars, I had a continual niggle that surely, with all the telescopes trained on the skys, some boffin somewhere would have noticed said aliens. As I said, a niggle, but one of many that piled up as I waded my way through the book.

A more serious niggle was that each of the aliens we meet have essentially human motivations. It may be true that petty politics is indeed "galaxy spanning", but it ensures the plot stays ordinary. Basically, Cobley gives us good aliens and bad aliens (and indeed, good Human's and bad Human's). I prefer shades of gray with all the underlying uncertainty and corresponding tension it provides and was disapppinted that over 600-odd pages it was white hat and black hat and nothing in between.

And then there is the technology....or lack of it This is where Cobley seriously lets the side down. This is a future devoid of any serious consideration for impact and consequence. That opening sequence of first contact shows Humanity as possessing FTL drives, yet strangely we can't have used them because we've not really left Earth yet. Hmmm... And many characters have an embedded AI including one of the main characters, yet a simulcrum of this guys dead daughter needs a seperate player so he can see her. Why? Surely if you can load an AI in your skull, you can load a simulcrum of your dead daughter as well? The same character, a diplomat who routinely goes FTL between planets, can't seem to get his head around there beings "layers" to the universe. Oh and he goes potty all to readily for no apparent reason. Work stress perhaps, but it seemed very unlikely to me and sadly, missed steps like this abound.

All of which is small potatoes to the main problem I had with "Seeds of Earth". The Universe shattering premise - which I won't spoil, don't worry - made no sense to me. It all seemed so pedestrian, a kind of 'Gaia is Good' (or God perhaps) stance for no obvious reason. Indeed, many sections of the novel reminded me uncomfortably of "Avatar", to the point that I had to check authorship of "Avatar" just to reassure myself Cobley was not the original source of Cameron's epic. He's not, that I could find at least, but the themes in "Seeds of Earth" are strikingly similar and not in a good way.

So, I'm definitely a disappointed reader. I purchased this for a flight to Indonesia, and normally I'll munch through a good novel on the plane, forgoing sleep and the inflight entertainment both. This time I crunched my way through a few chapters then gave up and watched a movie instead. It ultimately took me three weeks to finish the novel, which is a powerfully long time for me.

Basically, Iain M. Banks notwithstanding, for me this was less a space opera and more a sci-fi train wreck and I certainly won't be buying the next volume for a long haul flight any time soon...or at all!

Book 1: Almost too much to absorb

This is my first Michael Cobley novel as I'm sure it's the first of many who choose to begin this trilogy of Humanity's Fire. Like other trilogies (Cosmonaut Keep (The Engines of Light, Book 1) to name one) or quadrilogies (Lords of the Middle Dark (Rings of the Master, Book 1) to name another) I've completed, Seeds of Earth has the same problem of getting the plot off the launchpad when weighed down with a load of new characters, a shipment of proper nouns and crates full of exotic aliens, planets, flora, fauna, honorific titles... I could go on. It's one of those books which is difficult to find a toehold. It's also one of those books which lends itself to be read in one week in order for the reader to fully understand the setting Cobley has just placed.

The 9-page prologue of Seeds of Earth takes place on Mars when the Solar System is under attack by the Achorga Swarm. Plans have been made to launch fifteen arks to save humanity in case the Swarm prevails. The Swarm has been virulently persistent to only allow humanity to construct and launch three arks. Chapter One opens 150-years after the ark Hyperion has made landfall on the planet Darien. The mix of Scots, Scandinavians and Russians settle the hospitable planet and befriend a race of intelligent bipeds who inhabit the breathable atmosphere of moon.

Living in ignorance about the fate of the earth and the two other arks, the tiny outpost somewhat flourishes. Politics plays a big role in Book One, but not to the extent of what MacLeod includes in his novels (but you can bet they both emphasis the Scottish accent!). I'm not sure why a small outpost needs eight-story building with elevators. I ask the question: Did they strip the ark of the elevator of did they manufacture it? And if they stripped the ark, why did they put the elevator in something as unimportant as an apartment building? Much of the description of the infrastructure of the colony seems unrealistic for only be in operation for 150 years. The citizens also travel by dirigible. I'm getting sick of dirigibles.

Lemme see... only two of the cast have idiosyncrasies enough to be sympathetic with:
There's Kao Chih who's on a long, long journey from his domain (no plot spoiler here) and keeps running into difficulties including a menacing human, menacing pirates and menacing droids. Seems like deep space is a scary place to traverse... honest enough Kao Chih just keeps going in honor of his ancestors. However, one niggling detail remained: when the craft left its main port, it had six days of food for the two crew members. Later, it's quoted as having enough food for three months and nine days at quarter rations for one person. I can't massage those numbers!
Then there's Earthspace ambassador who carries around a virtual simulation of his dead daughter and plays chess with her, even when there's company around. Sounds kind of a disappointment to the government of Earth.

The writing style isn't as grandiose as Banks or as techy as Hamilton... it lays somewhere in between, but I much prefer the lengthy prose of Banks above all others. That said, Seeds of Earth doesn't have loquacious paragraphs like much of modern British Space Opera uses. The vocabulary isn't as challenging as Revelation Space or The Algebraist, but still maintains a certain sophistication. One more niggling point was the 3-time use of the word "concertaed" when describing the operation of a door (which fondly reminds me of Delanay's "the door dilated").

It's definitely NOT bad. It's just unfortunate the the trilogy has to start somewhere! Judging from the conclusion of Book One, I predict that books two and three will be at least 4-star reads. I've already bought Book Two and I've pre-ordered Book Three. How's that for eager!

This book is excellent

I would suggest this book to anyone who isn't squeamish. This has a lot of crude language, violence, and very upsetting scenes in some places. This author is not afraid to abuse her characters. I didn't give it five stars because you have to wade through the beginning before it sucks you in, and because it introduces completely different characters so abruptly in the second book. Everything does come together nicely though.

Review on Godspeaker books one and two.

I have differing feelings on this book. One, it can drag because it feels like the author has the need to literally write everything that happens. This is unnecessary in fiction-just allude to it and we'll understand :)

Two, the worldbuilding is great especially in the first book. Miller is good at creating a fantasy world. I have two words to describe the feel of the first book to you: old testament. Loved it although it was a long read and could've been tightened up.

Three, the best thing about the series is the character Hekat. Ambitious, ruthless, determined, horribly flawed and yet believing in a higher power than herself-she really interested me. She's a wonderful contrast to the uptight and exasperating princess Rhian. I get that the princess is on the "good" side but why does good have to be so boring?? It should be evil to be boring!

Now, I have not yet finished the trilogy (I just started book three) but the first book was better than the second. The second is very repetitive and the main princess character was extremely annoying with her black and white thinking. I thought the constant harping on how she was a woman, and how she refused to get her hands dirty with actual ruling really undermined the author's own message that women are equal to men and can equally wield power. I often skimmed book two for this reason because the princess was exhausting to read. Maybe this changes in the third book, I hope so.

It seems like Miller was trying to probe the themes of power, gender, and religion, but instead of exploring the grey areas of these issues instead seemed to pick sides. Thus boring Rhian on the good side with her "good" god and headstrong Hekat on the bad side with her "bad" god. Oh, and the "good" god will remind you a lot of a certain god we are all familiar with, which I thought was also annoying...

Overall, I liked the STORY, if not how it was actually executed, and the story was worth it to me. If you would like to read about a good character and an interesting (yes, male-dominated and sometimes offensive) fantasy world, I would recommend book one of this trilogy :)

One of a kind read, but I found myself losing interest as books continued

I purchased this series all as one book. While it began strong, it faded fast. I found myself halfway through the series with little desire to continue forward. I lost interest fast. I did, however, manage to finish this. It was long, and there was a lot of irrelevant information and details. I found it overall to be tiring, and I can't say it’s a series Id personally recommend. I enjoyed the original concept, and creativeness this offered, but that’s about all I appreciated regarding this series. It just seemed to go on and on.................... I tired of the plot and characters before completing book 2. I should have just stopped there.

I hope 'The Return Man' returns!

Simply put: I love end-of-the-world stories. Obviously so do numerous others.

So, last Friday, when I saw this book in my local bookstore, I was excited by the cover and the blurb. But I had no idea it was a zombie novel. Not until I began the first chapter did I learn this.

OK. No biggie. I've read my fair share of zombie novels by the best writers. (And some I didn't care for like others.)

Bottom line: Despite some issues I had while reading this novel, V. M. Zito grabbed my attention from the get-go, and never let up till the end. THAT in itself is a great accomplishment for a debut author. Kudos there!

Zito's writing in this genre was pretty solid, and had loads of action which I love. But it also had solid characterization, not just good guys with big muscles and big guns blowing away zombies. It is a bit more involved than that. But the pacing is outstanding. Lots of different situations when the main character, Dr. Henry Marco, along with a very badass Chinese spy, Kheng 'Ken' Wu, go on a dangerous quest for a corrupt CIA agent, deep within the badlands of California, which is now part of the western region of the US, now known as the Evacuated States, where zombie run rampant in a ravaged wasteland. The eastern states are now called the Safe Haven, where this dark shadowy agent hires Dr. Marco to find his old working acquaintance, a madman scientist genius named Roger Ballard.

This scientist may not only hold the key to the zombie virus, but may have the answers to stop the spread. But Marco must not only make it there from his homebase in Arizona, with zombies running rampant everywhere, but penetrate a huge prison facility where the mad scientist is holed up. And the race for the cure begins, with Asian spies and paramilitary biker mercs going for the gold as well.

What I liked about the novel: It was never slow or boring for me. Interesting characters, both good and bad. Lots of thrills. Loads of bloody carnage action scenes. Although, I have to say, some were very hard to picture and/or decipher at times. But most were very well executed. I liked that author Zito put a slightly different spin to his zombie story that I haven't seen before: A former doctor with a bad past, who has a quite different job now in this harsh new world, hunting down loved ones for others in the safe zone, giving them 'final rest' and closure for the ones who made it out alive. Pretty good idea. Except I wish the author would have added some type of military training to this main character. How can a mere doctor have the skills to navigate such a horrific landscape? No weapons or survival training? Should have just added in that he was an ex-Marine or something.

What the author also did very well was give the reader the creepy factor. I have to say, Zito wrote some of the best zombie scenes I can recall reading. Very graphic and in your face ripping and rending. Not for the faint hearted. For those who like the comics and/or TV show - The Walking Dead - then you should love this one.

Despite some of its flaws, which run from sometimes getting irritated with the main character, wondering how this 'border' works in the states, ie, what stops the zombie virus from spreading to the eastern states? To writing the typical scene I've seen way too many times in other books and movies: A brutal bad guy tries to kill the main character, and when the tables are turned, the main character wants to help him. (Really?! I hated that!)

But also author Zito tries to put solid heart and tortured soul into his characters. I actually liked the main character's sidekick, Chinese spy Wu. He was actually more sensible in his outlook of survival. ( No, he didn't give second chances to a bloody merc trying to kill you!) And Wu was more than a little Bruce Lee type killer. He had a past life, which the author brought to life with good effect.

I also liked the main character's past, where he once had a wife and daughter. The linking threads that the author placed out there for the reader played out very well at the end. I was expecting SOMETHING to the effect of them not really being dead. That he would find them yet still alive, and would have to save them. But the author kinda surprised me in this aspect, and it left me wanting more. And that's a good thing.

With the type of ending author Zito gave here, there should be a sequel coming. I hope so. There is lots more to explain and explore here. I, for one, would like to see Zito pen another adventure. He's a good author.

Interesting, Action Packed and Hard to Put Down

This is a fun book. There are some books I read that strike me so strongly as a story that would translate well into a movie. The Return Man is one of those movies. I read a lot in this genre. I love survivalist, end of society and end of world books. When I saw this title I grabbed it because it fits everything I love about an action novel. And it did not disappoint. The Return Man had me not wanting to put it down and had me thinking about the world created between its pages long after I finished.

The Return Man begins several years after the western part of the United States has fallen and succumbed to a zombie plague. The government and society has retreated to east of the Mississippi; everything west of the Mississippi has been evacuated and abandoned. The zombie plague is focused only in the USA, other countries have not (yet) experienced it. (I wasn't clear if Mexico or Canada had been effected and if not ..... why or what they were doing.) The main character of the story lives in Arizona in the house he lived in with his wife before the fall. He has fortified it and is able to jump off satellite connections and communicate with a relative living in the "safe states". The Return Man is an interesting and different take on the zombie plague compared to what I have read before. Zombies are referred to as "corpses" and they are not completely mindless. The corpses are like most zombies -- not complex and not thinking roving beings but they retain some reflexive memory of places and actions. This is explained in the book in a scientific way - - the stronger the emotional connection to a place or action, the more embedded it is in the brain and only that is retained. So a corpse will return to locations that it had a strong emotional connection to. Why is this important? Well the hero of the story is an assassin of sorts. Through his satellite internet connection to the retreated US populace in the "safe states", the hero has become a hunter of corpses that are the former loved ones of paying clients in the safe states. He uses information about his target to determine where the corpse would be emotionally pulled to and he goes after the zombie to eliminate it. Then the relatives can go on with their lives knowing that their loved ones are no longer out in the world hungry, desparate and undead. The main character travels throughout the western part of the former USA on his hunts.

So there are fights scenes and chase scenes - oh and the gore scenes. Funny enough, this is not what I like about survivalist and apocalypse themed books. So I skimmed these parts, however they are well written and with tight realistic action and humor. What's that you ask? How can I like zombie books and not love the car and train chase scenes, fight and gore scenes? I like the collapse of society novels to read about what caused the collapse, how it happened, how people survived it and how people attempt to move-on past the collapse. The Return Man has that aspect, but it also centers more on a quest that needs to take place after the partial collapse of society and the fights and battles the leads must engage in to complete their quest. There are painful memories, witty jokes bantered about and fighting.

Some other unique things about this book, there are references to both domestic and international politics. There is a themes of foreign espionage (the USA is no longer the strongest country on the planet), domestic terrorists, and the very conservative and fascist government that has arisen and is in control in the "safe states". At the same time, the main character is plagued by his own emotional loss. The reader learns about these through flashback scenes. These touches to the post-zombie world make The Return Man different and interesting. It reads like an action packed thriller but instead of chasing down international secrets about warheads - an unlikely pair is chasing down a potential cure to the zombie plague fighting off zombies, domestic terrorists and international forces.

This book was a lot of fun and I really hope there is a sequel! I believe fans of thrillers, zombie books and post-apocalyptic books will really enjoy the Return Man.

Intriguing Twist On The Zombie Tale

Most readers and viewers of the zombie experience are familiar with the meandering, apparently "mindless" shuffling of the resurrected dead; indeed, this portrayal is so universal, most never question why the zombies stay in one place or why they sometimes seem to roam. But what if there were still some remnant of a memory flickering deep inside that mindless body that served as a beacon to keep it in a specific place or to compel it to return to a specific place in memory, such as home, workplace, or favorite vacation spot? This is one of the intriguing foundations of V.M. Zito's "The Return Man" which suggests that an emotional link buried somewhere deep in a resurrected zombie compels it to seek that place in memory.

Building on this foundation, Dr. Henry Marco has become "The Return Man", a kind of zombie hitman in a post-apocalyptic America, who accepts pay from human survivors living in the "safe states" East of the Mississippi, to hunt down loved ones who have been resurrected as zombies in the vast wasteland of the Western US which has experienced a Zombie Plague and is now a dangerous and deadly occupation zone for the undead. Marco uses information supplied by the living to hunt down and ultimately "kill" their zombie loved ones in an effort to provide some modicum of peace and finality to both parties. But Dr. Marco is also part of the "walking dead" in his own way as he is an emotionally damaged man haunted and mentally imprisoned by the death of his young daughter and the apparent loss/disappearance of his wife who lives in a crafted set of precarious memories in his feverish mind as he constantly seeks her body, living or dead, to "return" her, if necessary.

An instantly unlikable military man, Owen Osbourne, currently heading Homeland Security leverages Marco to travel deep into the "evacuated states" to Sarsgard Medical Prison in California to find Dr. Roger Ballard, a former colleague of Marco who was working on a vaccine and a cure for the "resurrection" when he was apparently killed, and bring back physical proof of his death. Of course, everyone seems to have hidden agendas and trust is impossible faced with this new challenge. Adding to the chaos is the appearance of Ken Wu, a Chinese spy impersonating a US soldier who joins Marco's search for Ballard for his own purposes. Throw in a multitude of unrelenting zombies, a group of human survivalist vigilantes known as the "Horsemen", and several unexpected surprises along the trek and you have the ingredients for a fast-paced, white-knuckler that will have you gasping for air at times.

Vito does an admirable job of fleshing out his characters in all their exposed humanity and the dialogue is often terse but believable. The gore count is off the charts so be forewarned but the story of emotional loss and the ultimate redemption of one's soul is compelling and fresh in this new take on the zombie story. I throughly enjoyed the book and recommend it to fans of this sub-genre.

Darren Shan is the man

This is the third book in the series about zombies, and it is really good, I was worried when I heard about it being another lengthy series like Cirque Du Freak, but it is just as good, just not vampires, and it is a bit more for adult kids than Cirque was, but just as everything Darren touches, I is gold and worth the time and money.

I liked it but I wish the story would move faster

I like this story, It has some good new fresh ideas on an old story - zombie apocalypse from zombie point of view.
thing is, that the story does not really MOVE fast. this is the third in the series and I think they have to write another three or four books at this pace to tell the entire story. It almost has a serial feel to it. like the old buck Rodgers movies...stay tuned till next time folks type of feel. don't get me wrong, this is a GOOD story, but it is one story stretched out over several books.

Excerpts from the Big Orange Book

OK, I'm a big fan of Emberly, as should be apparent to anyone who's read any of my other reviews, but the salient detail about this book was left out of the other reviews: It consists entirely and only of excerpts from the Big Orange books. You don't really need this if you have the Orange book.
Perhaps worse is that it's not even =all= the Halloween material from the Big Orange book, so even if you wanted to get it because your kids were fighting over who got to use the orange book, this may not help. It contains none of the monsters from the green or purple books, and despite the color of the cover, there are no red pictures. Just orange.
This might be a good book to introduce someone to Emberly's work, though around Halloween, being cheap.

Best drawing books ever

Ed Emberley's drawing books never disappoint! This book shows you with the simplets of instructions how to draw witches, skeletons and a haunted house, among other things. As with all Ed Emberley books, the instructions are exceptionally easy for even the most artistically challenged.
I brought this in and had my kids' Cub Scout Den create Halloween posters. The kids (and their parents) had a great time and were amazed at the simplicity.
My only complaint is that there are not enough monsters and you have to purchase other books -- I wish this were more of an anthology of Halloween drawings

Ed Emberley books are the best!

I grew up using Ed Emberley's Drawing Book of Animals. I somehow managed to keep it until my first child was born (it was my favorite childhood book), but without supervision, it was destroyed/lost/gone. When my second child turned 4, I started looking for a replacement and was thrilled to see all the different Ed Emberley books available now! These books take you shape by shape through the drawing. Each drawing is short and simple, keeping your child's attention and giving them a great result without discouraging extra detail. I recommend these books to anyone with pre-schoolers, they're awesome!

"Kate Daniels meets Aliens with awesome armor"

ANALYSIS: This was another awesome book from the mind that gave us the wonderful Legend Of Eli Monpress series. Rachel had mentioned this book in her previous interview with Fantasy Book Critic last year and after finishing it, I think can be best summed up as "Kate Daniels in space with armor". The author builds up an interesting universe that I'm sure will be explored in the sequel books. What this book is simply awesome and here's what it's about.

Deviana "Devi" Morris is a mercenary very much in the Kate Daniels mold, that is tough, extremely competent, headstrong & packing a lot more power than is apparent. Devi is a person who does things her own way, be it her personal or professional lives. Her aim is to be the best at her job so she can attract enough attention and commendations to be called to join the Devastator unit which serves the king directly. She is a citizen of Paradox which is ruled by a god-king. Democracy is heretical to them and violence is second nature. She is unapologetic and extremely focused on becoming a part of the Devastators [Royal Paradoxian unit] that gets to play by her own rules. Her path to becoming a devastator however goes through a year of guard duty on the Glorious Fool.

The Glorious Fool has a high mortality rate for its crew as well as the mercenaries that protect it. This ship's captain Brian Caldswell has a worse reputation than his ship when it comes to dangerous missions however his worth and ideals are admired throughout interstellar space. Devi will learn that the captain plays his own game and his crew is even more shrouded in ambiguity. The story then focuses on Devi and the journey she will take as a security team member of the Glorious Fool.

The author sets the book to be a rip-roaring ride full of action, intrigue, snarky talk and a very interesting universe that has four sentient races and many possibilities about what actually is happening. Firstly here's why I loved this book so much, the characterization is top notch. Devi Morris is an absolute kick-ass character who will keep the reader glued on to her antics as well as the overall plot twists. The author has to be commended for setting this story in first person and making it so enthralling. Devi constantly keeps the readers on her toes and the way she's goes about things (like giving her armor and weaponry, names such as Mia, Sasha & Lady Grey or having her way in relationships). Devi as a character is absolutely a riveting one and is one of my favorite narrators being written about.

Secondly the world or universe-building is absolutely engrossing, beginning with the four sentient races, or the curious split between Terran and Paradoxian humanity and all the secrets surrounding the crew of the Glorious Fool. The author makes it absolutely intriguing as she drops enough hints and peeks about what might be happening so as to grab the readers for the remaining books in the series. Thirdly the pace and plot twists are absolutely top-notch, they keep the reader hooked and with the way the book ends. The book wonderfully mixes action with romantic elements along with the Sci-fi aspect of the story.I can bet that the readers (like me) can't wait to read Honor's Knight to see what happens next with Devi and the Glorious Fool inhabitants.

I didn't find any things to nit-pick about this book, no issues at all and so I would like to simply say that this was one of my three top reads of this year irrespective of genre.

CONCLUSION: Fortune's Pawn by Rachel Bach (nee Aaron) is a wonderful read; it encompasses various different genre elements and yet makes itself original enough to stand out among various SF reads. Be sure to read Fortune's Pawn as otherwise you will be missing out on a fun book and a superb story.

Fast-paced sci-fi with strong female protagonist

Now, I’ve read sci-fi with a female protagonist before. Still, apart from Catherine of T.C.McCarthy’s Exogene (and she’s a genetically modified war machine, so not quite the same thing) I haven’t read a character quite like Devi’s. There are many sci-fi books with adrenalin-loving, gun-toting heroes but almost no sci-fi novels of any heft featuring a female equivalent. So Devi is kinda unique. She’s super aggressive, in-your-face, loves a good fight and names her guns (Sasha and Mia) and her Paradoxian armored suit (the Lady Gray) like they were her babies. She talks a big game but has the substance to back it up. And she doesn’t mince words; she’s a straight talking gal and says it like it is. I loved her character!

Fortune’s Pawn is narrated in the first person from Devi’s point of view. She spends quite a bit of time describing the Lady Gray – what it’s composed of, how it works and the expense and trouble Devi has taken to get it. She also describes Sasha and Mia lovingly, “my girls were no slouches”. There’s considerable space given to describing invasions and fights in great detail. Manouvres, strategies, fighting skills, weaponry and armor all feature heavily in this book, as does romance.

Bach builds up an interesting universe for this novel. This is of course many many years in the future, and in this world there are other life-forms besides the humans, namely the aeons, the xith’cal and the lelgis; Devi has an opportunity to encounter all of them. Besides the fact that I really liked the lead character I also appreciated the way the author narrates her story, divulging details along the way and building up her characters, and still keeps the momentum of a fast-moving space opera. There’s action and fights galore but there are also the quiet moments. Bach has managed to beautifully wedge together sci-fi and romance in the same interesting novel.

This is the first book of the Paradox series. The sequel “Honor’s Knight” comes out February 2014; I’m not sure I can wait that long.

Bach has a lot of great ideas, I'm hoping for more thinking and less blasting in her future work.

I was ready to hate this in the first 25 pages, because of Devi's obliviousness to the Glorious Fool's obvious real purposes, the constant weapons porn, the macho posturing, and the lazy science. But I found myself reading on, and liking Devi, and her crewmates, and intrigued by the plot foreshadowing, even as I grew further annoyed with truly lazy science and really overblown adolescent crushing. But the end I was pulled in by the engaging plot, and banged through this book in a few hours, left wishing for more.

I'd like Rachel Bach's work a lot more if she eased up on the space opera elements and tedious battle scenes to focus on the interesting universe and plot elements she's developing. Bach has a lot of great ideas, and I think her work would be far better if she didn't cater so hard to a weapons and space piracy fixated audience. OTOH, I suppose that's a much larger audience than those who like their SF with more thinking and less blasting.

A Little More Depth To This Summer Tale Would Have Been Nice

The Low Down: Rory needs to get away for the summer. Her mother sucks the life out of her, and she needs to get away as far as possible from her mom's revolving door of boyfriends and break-ups. Rory jumps at the chance of working in the Hamptons with her aunt for the Rule family, even though it's for no pay.

Rory soon learns that Isabel Rule is the family troublemaker. Sneaking boys in her room and failing her driving test (again) are just the latest chapters in a long line of screw ups. But once Rory is assigned to help Isabel pass her test, the two girls start to spend more time together than is comfortable. Can they find anything that they have in common?

And then Isabel's brother, Connor, shows up. Sweet, gorgeous and down-to-earth, Connor draws in Rory with a gentle tug...but is he just being nice?

Isabel has always felt like an outsider in her own family, especially since the incident last summer. Her parents packed her up and sent her to school in California, and she hasn't been home since. Things that she used to love - her best friends, Thayer and Dawson, hanging out at the country club and attention from all of the boys they see every summer - has become unfulfilling and boring. How could she ever think that was fun? And that girl who's staying with them all summer...why does she always look like she's passing judgment?

Underneath it all, there are some secrets that have been hidden for far too long...

So, Basically: I love summer beach stories. They take everyone out of the ordinary and make it seem like anything is possible. A summer romance always sounds good on paper. I must say that I much preferred Isabel's story line; it had more bite and more depth. The tale of Rory was pretty flimsy and one-note. The inept-mom-who-doesn't-want-to-grow-up character is a little tired. Rory felt like a stick figure while Isabel was a full-blown sculpture.

Rules of Summer by Joanna Philbin was published June 4, 2013 by Poppy. Ink and Page picked this book up from the library, so no one had a choice about whether it was reviewed.

Predictable, but Good

Whether I loved or hated this book I was destined to have strong feelings about it either way. The story takes place in "the Hamptons" which is where I grew up (and I'm momentarily back living now). The story mostly takes place in East Hampton and I grew up in Westhampton. While they're both in the Hamptons they're very different places. That said, I completely related to this book. The hectic feeling of stepping off the train, seeing all the potato fields, calling the Jitney "the Jitney" rather than a bus (it seriously would never in a million years occur to me to call the Jitney a bus). I can also picture many of the places in the story: the Citarella, Ralph Lauren, and Tiffany on Main Street in East Hampton. And the traffic, oh how I can relate to the traffic. I work in Westhampton which most of the time is a ten-minute drive from my house. On a weekend in the summer? It's about 20-minutes. Plus the drivers are lunatics, it's like taking your life in your hands. Lots of "cidiots" as we used to call them.

Anyway, personally I always think I'm more critical of books that I can personally relate to the experience or the setting. I have to say that I think Joanna Philbin did a pretty great job describing the area and the class differences. I especially liked how Rory described the beach club as being kind of dumpy (all the fancy beach clubs I've been to have always been kind of plain and out-dated) and how Isabel goes to Riverhead to take her driving test (that's where I took my driving test!) and one of Isabel's friends describes Riverhead as depressing (it is, but it's gotten a little better).

On to the story. I liked the story. In a Top Ten Tuesday post I described it, prior to reading it, as a modern Downton Abbey set in the Hamptons. And it kind of was, there was definitely an upstairs/downstairs division. I guess Isabel could be a bitchier Sybil and the rude housekeeper Biana could be O'Brien, but I think, if I'm going to compare it to a TV show, Revenge is the way to go (although the setting in Revenge looks nothing like the Hamptons, I had two Australian tourists tell me it's actually shot in NC). Mrs. Rule is totally Victoria Grayson, Isabel is Charlotte, Mike (Isabel's love interest) could be Jack, and Connor (Isabel's brother) is a better Daniel. I don't quite know who Rory is in either of these situations, Branson maybe?

Anyway, this rambling review is a perfect example of why I should beer drink and write reviews simultaneously. Cheers!

Back to the story. I liked the story, I don't think it was anything groundbreaking, but it was definitely compelling and I especially liked the characters. I didn't love how it seemed to scream "EPIC!" and "SOAP OPERA!" I don't know if it's because it was written in the third-person (which only occasionally bothered me) or just the style, but in my head I kept doing the narrator's voice from Days of Our Lives, "Like sounds through the hourglass, these are the days of our lives." And that kind of bothered me, but not enough to make me not enjoy the book.

Then there are the secrets. Honestly? I thought they were super predictable. And I expected, because I guessed them pretty early on, that there would be twists and turns or major drama around them coming out, but there wasn't. They were fully revealed at practically the end of the book, they came out, and everyone moved on. It was very anti-climatic. Even though they weren't crazy, I liked the secrets part of the story and I wish it has been explored more.

I guess there's going to be a sequel? Which is fine with me. I'll be happy to read it. But I also wish this had been a stand alone. I don't think a sequel is really necessary. Everything could have been wrapped up in a single book, but hopefully the author has some great ideas to expand on the story.

Bottom Line: This is one I really enjoyed, partially because it's set in my own backyard. The story isn't anything too unique, but the characters are likable and interesting and I found myself really caring about them. It's predictable, but the way the story is told is still interesting enough for me to happily recommend it.

Fun Summer reading

This is a story of a wealthy, dysfunctional family who spends the Summer at their resort home. The teenage daughter is looking for love, understanding, and friends. It is light reading and just fun. I enjoyed not having to think critically or understand a deep concept. I enjoyed it!
