James Patterson should be ashamed
By MJK
This book is simply drivel and James Patterson should be ashamed and embarrassed. I've read 25-30 of Patterson's novels over the years including his excellent Alex Cross series and I normally eagerly await the next installment. Therefore, I was looking forward to another great read when I ordered this "co-authored" waste of time. Patterson is one of the great authors of his generation who writes tight compelling novels that are well researched and always full of suspense and believable characters. It is so sad to see him stoop to this level. I can't believe he even read this before allowing it to go to print never mind actually writing any of it. About halfway through the book I started to think it must be written tongue-in-cheek but sadly I was mistaken.
Thankfully, Coben, Sanford, Child, Elsner, Parker and a few other authors continue to take pride in their craft and maintain their integrity. I'm going to chalk this up as a $12 learning experience and never again purchase a novel that is co-authored. Hopefully anyone who reads this review will save the expense.

Don't waste your time or money
By Tom
There was a time when Patterson actually wrote books. Now he farms them out to co-authors who create the most unbelievable plots and characters. The story is told in 1st person, which is somewhat interesting, except that the character - Ben - constantly makes reference to old movie actors and moving lines as he is shot at, beaten, and chased by Federal Agents and Russian assassins. The "plot" just skips along like many of todays " action movies" where anything goes. It will be the last Patterson book, I ever buy.

I'm Done
By Tender Moon
Few chapters in, throwing in the towel. Stupid, annoying movie/presidential trivia nonsense keeps breaking into my train of thought and little else is happening. Not worth my time. Another instance where Patterson is laughing all the way to the bank.

She's happy when she hangs out with her best friends, the Robins. She's jealous that her genius little sister skipped two grades. And she's passionate about the crushes on her Boyfriend Wish list. And when Erica's mom is diagnosed with breast cancer, she feels worried and doesn't know what she can do to help.

When her family visits a cuarto de milagros, a miracle room in a famous church, Erica decides to make a promesa to God in exchange for her mom's health. As her mom gets sicker, Erica quickly learns that juggling family, friends, school, and fulfilling a promesa is stressful, but with a little bit of hope and a lot of love, she just might be able to figure it out.

Confetti Girl author Diana Lopez returns with this sweet, funny, and utterly honest story about being a girl in a world full of good (and bad) surprises.

From Booklist
López (Confetti Girl, 2009) creates another likable character in Erica “Chia” Montenegro, whose comfortable middle-class life is flipped in an instant when her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. Instead of being able to concentrate on cute boys, her friendly clique (the Robins), and the usual middle-school concerns, Chia is thrust into the role of caregiver to her two-year-old brother and feels additional responsibilities at home, where her younger sister also worries about their mother’s prognosis. When the family visits a cuarto de milagros to pray for help, Chia decides to make a big promesa: surely 500 sponsors for a 5K walk to fight cancer would help heal her mother. Chia’s struggle to keep up with friends, housework, and schoolwork is painfully realistic yet tempered with light touches of humor. The many characters in Chia’s life are individually and lovingly drawn; more than just props in Chia’s story, they have concerns, hopes, and dreams of their own. Readers will feel like Chia’s family and friends could do anything as long as they stick together—and they may be right. Grades 5-8. --Erin Downey Howerton

Young teen dealing with mother's illness
By D. Williams
Diana Lopez's ASK MY MOOD RING HOW I FEEL tells about how Erica (Chia) Montenegro and her family cope when her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. Erica is a middle-school student, so she is certainly old enough to realize that this is a life-changing event for their family, whether her mother goes into remission, then cure, or not. However, she wants what "normal" middle school girls want, particularly fun times with friends and a boyfriend. Her "normal" friends don't understand these mixed emotions; hence, this work's title. Her father becomes very protective of her mother; Erica often takes charge of her younger sibling's care.

Erica and her family are from Texas, so they journey to a shrine in South Texas where many families like hers have sought help. She makes a promesa to the Virgin Mary that she will sign up five hundred people to sponsor her in a Race for the Cure event. Sometimes it seems to Erica that everything is going against her keeping this promise, but she keeps her courage.

Read and see whether - and how - Erica can keep her promesa and how her mother does! Granted, sometimes the answer to prayers and promesas isn't what we want, but at least Erica is making an effort to do some good - if not for her mom, for others.

I found this to be a very honest story of a young girl coping with cancer in her family. The actions, style and word choice are wonderful for the characters and the setting.

Teens who are in a similar situation and their friends will truly appreciate this book and say, "Yes! That's me!" when they see Erica's roller-coaster of emotions.

An excellent book for a preteen/teenage girl
By Rachael D
An excellent book for a preteen/teenage girl. The idea behind it is that she's feeling so many emotions that she needs a mood ring to keep track of all of them. She experiences everything from happiness, to jealousy and even her mom being diagnosed with cancer. She makes a promise to God in exchange for her moms help and this book is a story of her journey to make sense of everything and make it through. Cute story, my child loved it!

A total surprise for me!
By Amazon Customer
Ask My Mood Ring How I Feel was another book I wasn't sure I wanted to read. This wonderful book came with another book that I had requested and I wasn't planning on including it with the Best of 2013 Middle Grade reads until I read it ~ it wasn't at all what I was expecting.

This book opens with your typical, everyday 7th grade, hyper boy vigilent teen ager focused on what all little 7th grade girls are aware of. You have boy/clothes/when am I going to reach the "close encounter of the #1, 2, 3 or 4th degree (involving boys - but you already figured that out right?)" crazy girls (plus one boy in their group who is just starting to be aware of Erica and she hasn't a clue (of course).

But then Erica's life changes - her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. I was very pleased with how the author didn't brush over the subject, worked through Erica's emotions, her dad's worry about his wife and Erica's little sister's almost OCD counting and need to clean. There is a LOT of information, emotions and kids are given some tools they can use with major events in their lives. Most of all I loved how Erica stepped forward and helped around the house - taking care of the cleaning and her little brother as best as a 13 year old can. In many ways she took over much of the organizing of their home - and the resulting consequence would be eye opening for kids & their families.

I was very impressed with this book all around. The only thing I was a little un-impressed about was the parents in the book take the kids to a "shrine" where people make promises to the "Virgen de San Juan del Valle" in order to heal the people in their lives. The parents in the book take the kids there and have their kids make a promesa but of course don't do a good job of making sure the girls understand that nothing they do can heal their mother. Instead of putting their fear and trust in God they turn to promises, the Virgin Mary and works to hopefully heal their mom.

Parents should take the time to read the book first or at least read it with their daughters. Talk about how God is there to support us and while He can heal us sometimes he doesn't choose to. Talk about how we can help others, support and encourage each other and how we can let our friends know we are there if they need us. I would of LOVED to see a list of discussion questions with this book. It's outstanding and should be on each library shelf & in each school.

There is a strong hispanic presence in this book and you'll find some cultural references throughout the book, not just in language, but in religion and this provides a great opportunity to discuss cultural differences and different beliefs and thoughts as well.

Disclaimer: I was offered a copy of the book to read and review on CCB. I was not required to post a positive review and no $ exchanged hands. Thanks for reading CCB!

Homeroom Diaries, by James Patterson, Lisa Papademetriou

In James Patterson's first highly illustrated "diary fiction" story for teens, the mega-bestselling author's most endearing and original teen heroine ever proves that everyone can use a helping hand once in a while.
Margaret "Cuckoo" Clarke recently had a brief stay in a mental institution following an emotional breakdown, but she's turning over a new leaf with her "Operation Happiness". She's determined to beat down the bad vibes of the Haters, the Terror Teachers, and all of the trials and tribulations of high school by writing and drawing in her diary. And when life gets really tough, she works through her own moments of uncertainty through imaginary conversations with her favorite literary characters.
Cuckoo's also got a nearly impossible mission: she, along with her misfit band of self-deprecating friends (who call themselves "the Freakshow") decide to bridge the gap between warring cliques and "bring the Nations together". Not everyone is so willing to join hands and get along, but Cuckoo never stops smiling... until one of her closest friends, pushed to desperation by a Hater prank, decides that enough is enough.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7–10—After a brief stay at a mental institution, Cuckoo Clarke is back in school and living with Mrs. Morris, her foster parent. Her best friends are a band of lovable misfits and they come up with a plan to unite the various factions of the student body (the jocks, stoners, mathletes, activists, Tolkien freaks, etc.) Even after some setbacks, they bring people together for a "Scream Out," an event that allows everyone an opportunity to open up, release tension, and ultimately discover that they have more in common than they thought. Overall this is a successful novel. Cuckoo is a well-developed and accessible protagonist. She is introspective and she copes with life's difficulties by spending a lot of time in her head and writing alternative endings to movies in her journal. Despite the fact that serious issues (a negligent mother, an attempted sexual assault, and an incident of cyberbullying) are at play, the lighthearted tone adds levity to the work. The novel is fully illustrated with humorous artwork that contributes to the story in a meaningful way. Fans of the popular "diary fiction" genre (as well as those simply looking for an approachable and quick read) will find much to enjoy here.—Julie Hanson, Chicago Public Library

Hilarious and made of awesome
By Michelle@Book Briefs
The Homeroom Diaries is a hilarious story told in the form of a teens diary, complete with tons of awesome illustrations. It is hard for me to decide which I enjoyed more- the story through Margaret, or "Cuckoo" as she has everyone call her, entries or her pictures to go along with the entries. It was a close call, both were equally awesome and both totally hilarious. The Homeroom Diaries is told from Cuckoo's point of view, but because it is her diaries it is told in a kind of easily accessible stream of consciousness. I loved every page of this book, even the sad ones.

Cuckoo does not have it easy. She has had more than her fair share of crappy things happen to her, but still through it all she is holding it together remarkably. I know the counselors at her school don't think so, but I do. I admired the heck out of her. And I loved seeing her with her friends.

The illustrations added a fantastic level of humor to the story. I lost count of how many times I flat out laughed out loud while reading Homeroom Diaries. And these were not dainty little giggles or chuckles, they were full out laughs, where I had to re-read paragraphs just so I could laugh again.

Homeroom Diaries is not just funny pictures though, there is a kick ass story in there too.Cuckoo and her friends are trying to implement this "project happiness" idea of theirs throughout the story, and you get a behind the scenes look at their everyday life. And trust me, tons goes on with them. I loved getting to know each of her friends, and I especially loved the alternate endings that she made for them. Cuckoo hates endings, and she is constantly writing alternate endings for books and movies and people. I hope that means there is another book coming out, because I am not ready to say goodbye to Cuckoo and her BFFs!

*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

Homeroom Diaries- Read it before you get detention!!
By Kimberly Masimore
Reading "Homeroom Diaries" is like a breath of fresh air. While the concept of a book being written in diary form is quite popular, James Patterson ups the ante by creating a relatable character that you truly care about. Everyone has gone to school with someone like Cuckoo Clarke, but now you get to be inside her head as she gets the chance to "start over." The voice of Cuckoo sucks you in on page one and keeps you turning the page until the end.

Homeroom Diaries
By Angie
Homeroom Diaries was such a delightful read! I was surprised by how dark the subject matter got, but it's done with humor and understanding. And the illustrations are great! Maggie, aka Cuckoo, was just released from a 10-day stay at the mental hospital. She had an emotional breakdown after her mother took off and never returned. Now, she's living with a neighbor and is determined (along with her rag-tag group of friends) to do something to make the world, or at least their school, a happier place. All the while, keeping a diary and keeping said diary away from the school counselor who thinks every emotional response is cause for concern.

I really enjoyed Homeroom Diaries. I had never read a graphic novel before, so this was really something different for me. It's not wholly a graphic novel, probably a bit less than half, but it still took some getting use to. I was distracted by the graphics in the beginning. My eyes kept darting back to them while I was reading the text, but after a few chapters I fell into a rhythm. It all kind of reminded me of Lizzie McGuire, with little cartoon Maggie's acting out the story, or depicting some funny extra from her mind.

As for the plot, Homeroom Diaries is, like I said earlier, dark but funny. Maggie is accepting of the fact that she was institutionalized, and is annoyed that now every time she's sad, her counselor wants to send her back. She is allowed to be sad! Especially since someone close to her dies and another someone attempts suicide! See, really dark. Oh, and a boy assaults her. She's not crazy! She's having appropriate emotional responses! But she doesn't let that get her down. Maggie and her friends are super determined to pull something together to join the cliques and make people happier. It does get a bit cheesy toward the end, but I liked it. A lot.

Homeroom Diaries was really good. The format was a bit hard for me to get into at first, but I ended up loving it. The comic bits add so much to the overall story! Although I have to say my favorite page was the faces of Johnny Depp. So random!

A Novelization of Equestria Girls with some things changed
By David
I had this on pre-order for a long time. Every time I saw it, I thought "What is that exactly?" I just got it today and it is a novelization of Equestria Girls, but some small things are different. If you've seen Equestria Girls, you know the story. It just changes some things like when Sunset Shimmer tries to frame Twilight with the photoshopped pictures. In the movie Sunset shows Luna the destroyed gym alone then Luna interrogates Twilight and Flash comes in and clears it all up. In the book, Twilight and the others are there when Sunset Shimmer shows Luna the gym. Sunset Shimmer is also there as Luna's talking to Twilight. Then Flash comes in and clears it up (he doesn't know Sunset Shimmer was the one who did it so she doesn't get blamed right there) and then she leaves. Plus, in the movie the first human version of her friends Twilight meets is Fluttershy. In the book it's Rainbow Dash. Nothing major or story changing but it was neat.

Or remember the part in the movie where they say that Sunset Shimmer really embarrassed Rarity when she tried to run against her for Princess of the Fall Formal last year? In the movie it doesn't say what she did but in the book it does (I won't spoil it). Also, since this is a book, there are no songs. So, the cafeteria scene with them getting all the students on Twilight's side with a song is replaced with them just handing out the ears and tail things. They all take it to it really well. The football team takes extra convincing but they put them on after Rainbow Dash talks to them and the quaterback does it first. And remember when Twilight said she was going to talk about human things to show the students how she fits in but never does because everyone's laughing at her as soon she comes out of the library because of the video Sunset Shimmer made? In the book she actually does talk to some people and says some things. Like when she's talking to a football player she goes "Offense sells tickets but defense wins games!"

There are also some some little cool things like Vinyl Scratch playing a remix of an old favorite song all the students know called "Raise This Barn" at the dance. Fluttershy gives Twilight exact directions to Celestia's office rather than Twilight having to come back to find out. Fluttershy uses napkins to clean Twilight off after she spills juice on her in the movie while in the book Granny Smith tosses her a rag. There's no scene where Applejack wonders how Twilight knew her name since she never said it because Pinkie greeted her and Big Mac by their names when they came in. Sunset Shimmer threatens to destroy the portal with a big hammer in the movie while in the book she uses a golf club. Small things like that are all over the place in this book.

There's also a bunch of activity pages at the end that are meant for kids. Like writing down what friendship means to them. Do they know anybody (like Sunset Shimmer) that is really mean but probably just lonely? And what's the best way to show that person they want to be friends? Actually, that can be applied to adults as well. Anyone can learn a lesson from this. I'm sure everyone reading this knows at least one really mean person. The actual story is 216 pages and there's 16 pages of activities. The last page is an ad for the Equestria Girls movie.

I didn't really see the point in making a novelization of this at first but it changed things enough to keep it interesting. Some lines are the exact same as the movie, but most aren't. Most scenes aren't either. It's sort of like a slightly changed alternate reality.... of another alternate reality... >.>

It was really fun to read. I'd recommend if you want a slightly different take on Equestria Girls.

Love Is the Cure: On Life, Loss, and the End of AIDS, by Elton John

A deeply personal account of Elton John's life during the era of AIDS and an inspiring call to action.

In the 1980s, Elton John saw friend after friend, loved one after loved one, perish needlessly from AIDS. He befriended Ryan White, a young Indiana boy ostracized because of his HIV infection. Ryan's inspiring life and devastating death led Elton to two realizations: His own life was a mess. And he had to do something to help stop the AIDS crisis.

Since then, Elton has dedicated himself to overcoming the plague and the stigma of AIDS. The Elton John AIDS Foundation has raised and donated $275 million to date to fighting the disease worldwide. Love Is the Cure includes stories of Elton's close friendships with Ryan White, Freddie Mercury, Princess Diana, Elizabeth Taylor, and others, and the story of the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Sales of Love Is the Cure benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

If you care about the AIDS epidemic, buy this book!
By Elizabeth Rosenthal
If you want a book about Elton's life, with all the gossip, the music, the costumes, the flowers, the feathers, the tiaras, the tantrums, the ups, and the downs, not to mention his genius, you will have to look elsewhere. This book is not for you. But if you are interested in Elton's charitable endeavors, or the AIDS epidemic, or the social and health issues that face humanity, or if you would like to support the Elton John AIDS Foundation, you should buy this book (proceeds from which benefit the EJAF) and read it.

Elton John should be commended for making his first book not a self-congratulatory autobiography but a plea for help in his chief passion, the fight against AIDS. Yes, Love is the Cure contains many autobiographical elements. Elton explains how his young friend, AIDS victim and activist Ryan White, unwittingly placed the musician on the path to recovery from life-threatening multiple addictions. This, in turn, enabled Elton to do what he wishes he'd done sooner - become a volunteer, activist, and fundraiser extraordinaire to rid the world of AIDS and the mass suffering, social and economic disruption, and terrible deaths it causes.

We read how Elton took many valuable lessons from his own experiences - before, during and after rehab - and applied them to his work against AIDS. For example, through his leadership, the EJAF has been very aggressive in reaching out to marginalized populations, including not just men who have sex with men, but sex workers, intravenous drug users, prison inmates, and the desperately poor, in countries around the globe. EJAF monies are funneled to local organizations in such diverse places as South Africa and Ukraine designed to meet very specific needs. The epidemic of rape against women in South Africa and homophobia in Ukraine are the stuff of outrage, but, as Elton points out, so are politicians and religious leaders in the U.S. who stand in the way of sex education and clean needle exchanges, as well as adequate funding for local AIDS programs that could reach the most vulnerable people.

Elton fervently believes that, given the medical advances that have been made in the treatment of AIDS, if only governments, private companies, nonprofits, and individuals could shed their prejudices and shortsightedness, and do their fair share, we could see the end of AIDS in the foreseeable future. In other words, it's the lack of commitment to eradication of the disease rather than an inability to do what is necessary that is now the chief obstacle in the fight against AIDS. Love is the Cure is eye-opening and inspiring.

The Luckiest Man In The World
By Rooster
Elton John is the rarest of celebrities. He is one of a handful of famous people who's talent and appeal allows them to remain an A list star decade after decade. We all know of his musical genius. I've always been fascinated by his larger than life...well ..life. I remember seeing him being interviewed by Tom Snyder many years ago on that late late night talk show. He admitted his "bi-sexuality" during that interview. It was a different time and it was scandalous to say the least. It was big news and of course the judgement and homophobia was quick to follow. It was at that moment that my admiration for Elton John began. Years later he became one of the very first celebrities to advocate for those suffering from HIV and AIDS. He and Elizabeth Taylor were the first and the biggest stars to tackle a very unpopular cause. His personal friendship and support for Ryan White and his family as well as his founding of The Elton John AIDS Foundation showed he will willing to walk the talk. My respect for Elton grew stronger. When he came out as a gay man, knowing the possible effects on his career, my respect for him grew even stronger. When he married his longtime partner David and later became a father, my respect and admiration, well you know -.
I've always wanted to know more about the man behind the public persona. I really never thought he would write an autobiography. Although he's been prolific as a performer and philanthropist, and has been interviewed many times, he has kept a great deal of his private life out of the public eye. He's certainly outspoken on almost any subject (and anybody) that he has an opinion on. He's done outrageous and provocative things and has offended countless celebs with his brutal honesty. But there was for me a great curiosity about what made him tick. I'm happy to report the book has been written and it's all that and a bag of chips!!
I loved this book. I finally have direct insight into one of the most interesting people on the planet. Elton is a man with many interests. His knowledge of music is vast to say the least. He knows more about music and about all genres of music than most anyone alive. His knowledge of modern and contemporary art is as vast as he and David's art collection. His circle of famous friends is legendary. This is a man who has seen and done it all, has had it all, and has lived to tell the tale.
Elton just did an interview in which he talked of his past substance addictions and of his past promiscuous lifestyle. It was the early years of the AIDS epidemic and his friends were dying all around him. He was deep in his addiction and felt invincible. It took meeting Ryan White to change his mind and his heart. He said in that interview that he somehow came through it HIV- and that he felt he was the luckiest man in the world. He reflected on those years of addiction and reckless behavior and commented that he felt he had wasted much of his life. That may be true, but in my opinion he has more than made up for it both in his philanthropy and by living life to the fullest since that time. I often wonder what Freddie Mercury's life would have been like if he had survived those early years of the AIDS epidemic. He and Elton lived very similar lives then. Both were very famous, rich, talented, etc. They were very good friends and contemporaries. I imagine that Freddie's life would have progressed similarly to Elton's and that we would have enjoyed the prolific and varied musical success that Elton has had. I believe Freddie's personal life would have progressed similarly to Elton's also. After reading this book, I know that Elton appreciates his life and luck, and that he remembers those who weren't as lucky. He lives this large life not only for himself, but for those who aren't here to live it themselves. He's a man who's experienced tremendous loss and great joy. Here's hoping that joy prevails from here on. Well done, Sir Elton!!

An excellent book about AIDS
By John C. Davies
I'm an Elton fan but wasn't sure whether to buy his first book. It's not an autobiography, but a book about AIDS; its impact on Elton (and friends tragically lost), the work that his foundation and others have done to combat the disease- in the face of obstacles- and what needs to be done to erase it.

Elton describes movingly how his life was turned round from a low point of drugs, alcohol and bulimia by Ryan White, a boy with AIDS he befriended who was atrociously treated in his home town in the USA. It was only with Ryan's death that Elton cleaned up his life and made a belated but significant effort to combat AIDS, setting up the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Elton is proud of its work and the many international projects it has funded, but goes beyond self-congratulation to address issues of stigma as well as social, governmental, institutional and corporate responses. He praises various heroes in the struggle as well as criticising some (in politics, religion and business) whose bigoted, ignorant or greedy attitudes have exacerbated the problem.

Since for Elton "AIDS might as well stand for "Appalling Indifference to the Disenfranchised in Society"" the cure for the problem involves a wholesale shift from stigmatising various marginalised groups to compassion and love for fellow human beings- a cure that is certainly achievable with genuine will.

I'm very glad i've read the book. It's not the work of a self-serving celebrity dabbler but of someone who is highly informed, involved and committed to the cause. Elton is to be commended for being so articulate, persuasive and finally inspirational on a subject dear to his heart.

A weighty tome and definitely the biggest turning point in the series!
By ChibiNeko
I'll warn you, if you're looking for something light, this won't be the read you're hoping for. While this is the same size height-wise as the previous volumes in the Higurashi series, it's easily just as long as the first volume of Umineko and comes in at about 500 pages. This and the second volume of the Massacre Arc are far longer than the previous volumes, so make sure to take that into consideration when you read them.

If you're familiar with the series, you'll know that this is the penultimate arc of the series and the one where everything really and truthfully starts to change and prepare us for the end of the main series. We're given hints in this volume as to who exactly is the person pulling the strings behind the scenes, with the identity of the killer given in volume two. This is the answer arc to the Curse Killing Chapter, and mercifully it's not as dark as CKC at times. We've still got one arc to go so we know that this probably won't end with roses and kittens, but this first volume gives us definite hope for a permanent happily ever after at some point.

What really helped set this volume apart for me was how honest Rika was during the entire volume. She's been re-living countless deaths for about 100+ years, which has jaded her and her companion Hanyu (the real Oyashiro) almost beyond the point of no return. Rika gets a new breath of fresh hope and it's really nice to see her honestly react to new situations and opportunities coming up. The artist really did an awesome job of showing us exactly how depressing it would be to die over and over again and to see your hope slowly die as you receive less and less time each time you reincarnate. What really sort of rubs salt into Rika's wounds is that she's perpetually stuck in the body of a pre-pubescent girl, meaning that odds are that Rika started the hundred years off with the outlook of a girl her age. It's amazing really, that Rika's lasted this long when you think about it. The reason I bring this up is that the artist does an excellent job of bringing all of this weariness across for the most part without resorting to showing buckets and buckets of gore. It makes it that much more interesting to see Rika really react to her surroundings for the first time, which makes me realize that we really haven't seen the true Rika until this volume.

This really is an excellent volume and I had to stop and pace myself before moving on to the next volume so I could really absorb everything. I would absolutely recommend this to fans of the series, although like previous volumes, if this is your first entry into the series then you won't want to start here. You'll be absolutely lost.

EDIT:

On a side note, I wanted to let you know that this volume is an omnibus of volumes 1 and 2 in the Massacre Arc. At 6 volumes long, this was the longest manga arc in the series thus far and I have to say that I liked Yen Press's decision to release the volumes together like this. It helps keep the tension going, something that I think the individual volumes would have potentially cut into. Maybe it was also to cut down on the expense of releasing each volume individually. Either way, it's less I have to wait for release-wise, which I like.

It also helps set the tone for the final manga arc, which originally comprised of 8 volumes and will be released in 4 chunky volumes. There is a slight worry about the spines deteriorating over time, but these are pretty solidly built. It's as of yet unknown if Yen Press will release any of the other side arcs such as there are 4 other arcs aside from those in the main series and the one side arc (Higurashi When They Cry: Demon Exposing Arc). All I can say is that if Yen Press will release them, I'm guaranteed to buy them.

The very nature of the series is revealed
By GraphicNovelReporter.com
This long and bloody series of friendship, faith, paranoia and broken ties seems to be close to ending, as the very nature of the series is revealed: Rika Furude, one of the girls in Keiichi's circle of friends, lives outside the flow of reality, or to be more precise, part of her does, allowing her to not only be a part of each and every "arc" that has taken place, but to view them from a spectator's perspective as well. She has replayed the same events many a time, more times than she cares to admit, and is able to recall such events without fail. Each time, the flow of events is similar, but subtly different, and they all share one thing in common, something she seeks to prevent: her own death in June 1983.

In every past arc, following the events in which one of Rika's friends is overcome with paranoia and strikes out in violence, killing someone near and dear to them, Rika meets her death without fail at the same time, every time. All she wants is to live past June 1983. What's wrong with that?

This time around she has only two weeks to discover who it is who is responsible for killing her, and to prevent it from happening. In addition, she must prevent the events of the past from repeating themselves as they always have, thus causing a massive impact on the flow of the future. As we all know, in the last arc, the Repentance Arc, Keiichi saved Rena from going down the path of insanity and bloodshed and prevented that tragedy, yet somehow did not prevent the death of Rika. This time through, Keiichi is given subtle hints from Rika, the puppet master that she is, to motivate him to change destiny for not only himself, but his friends as well.

During the events of this volume, Rika begins to become depressed, but more than just Keiichi show signs of remembering what occurred in previous worlds, including Rena and Shion, allowing them to further assist in keeping Rika committed to changing the future. Elements of the past begin to rear their ugly heads, but with the fiery anger brought on by such elements will push the heroes of this story to push the boundaries of what is right and what is wrong about society!

Big fan of Higurashi.
By Ismael N Munoz
I picked up this book hoping to continue where the anime left off. I wish the anime continued in English for this part of the story, but the manga does a great job of covering the story. This book also goes into details that were left out of the anime, so that is another reason I got it. I wanted to see how the author made it as closely as I could. I am looking forward to continuing with the next volume as soon as I can.

From USA Today bestselling author David Dalglish
One has conquered a city. The other covets an entire nation.
In book #3 of the Shadowdance series, Haern is the King's Watcher, protector against thieves and nobles who would fill the night with blood. Yet hundreds of miles away, an assassin known as the Wraith has begun slaughtering those in power, leaving the symbol of the Watcher in mockery. When Haern travels south to confront this copycat, he finds a city ruled by the corrupt, the greedy and the dangerous. Rioters fill the streets, and the threat of war hangs over everything. To forge peace, Haern must confront the deadly Wraith, a killer who would shape the kingdom's future with the blade of his sword.
Man or God; what happens when the lines are blurred?
Fantasy author David Dalglish spins a tale of retribution and darkness, and an underworld reaching for ultimate power in the third novel of the Shadowdance series, previously released as A Dance of Death.

Rollicking Good Edition to the Series
By Maxine McLister
Valdaren is finally enjoying a period of peace albeit an uneasy one thanks to the actions of Haern who is now the King's Watcher. However, now there's a vigilante in Angelport copying the Watcher's style and mark at his kills, implicating Haern. Haern can easily prove his innocence but, after the son of a Trifect member is killed, Alyssa Gemstone convinces him that they, along with her bodyguard Zusa should go and investigate. But they aren't prepared for the political intrigues, rivalries, and gamesmanship that are the norm for Angelport. The Merchant Lords are battling the Trifect, the elves are killing citizens who are trying to invade the forest, a new and powerful drug has hit the streets, and the Wraith, the vigilante who is copying Haern's style, may be even more dangerous and skilled than Haern. He is also more realistic and honest about his actions and his motives and he may force Haern to take a long hard look at himself, that is, of course, if he and his friends can survive long enough for reflection.

And it is in the absolute moral decay of Angelport where I found my only objection to the book. There is noone here to root for outside of our three main protagonists. There is seemingly nothing and noone in the town worth saving. There are no lofty motives, no innocents caught in the crossfire, just corruption and greed and even that is on a scale so petty that it is hard to care about the fate of the city and its citizens.

Still, despite this, I have to say I really enjoyed this tale. A Dance of Mirrors is the third installment in author David Dalglish's Shadowdance series and, if anything, it is perhaps even more violent and more blood soaked than the previous two books. It is also a rollicking good time. For fans of grimdark who prefer their fantasy with more sword than sorcery, this is one addicting series.

Fascinating third volume of the Shadowdance series
By M. Wanchoo
ANALYSIS: As with the last couple of books in the Shadowdance series, this is a re-review and will highlight the things that have been changed or added to the book. The author mentioned that this volume underwent a lot of changes including the title (which wasn't the case with its predecessors) and also that he made it a little less depressing. Read on to see how strong this book still is.

A Dance of Mirrors (previously titled A Dance Of Death) begins two years after the events where the Watcher ascended to his position and brokered a peace between the thief guilds and the Trifect. It’s a fragile peace however things are still kept in control by Haern and his ruthless vigilantism. This time around though things start to take a unholy turn in the coastal city of Angelport, wherein Laurie Keenan, the third lord of the Trifect resides. Someone called the Wraith is going around killing people and this time Laurie Keenan feels the Wraith's wrath and while the Wraith completes the kill and leaves the Watcher’s mark. Things take an uneven turn as Alyssa Gemcroft decides to investigate the matter and help her fellow Trifect member who’s been besieged in the city by the Merchants brethren and Lord Ingram who is the so-called ruler of the city. To add to this mix is the city’s continual fight with the Elves over the allocation of nearby forest land and all of it just becomes a powder keg ready to ignite with the arrival of the Watcher.

In one of the teasers for last year’s film The Dark Knight Rises, there are a couple of scenes shown from the previous film and there’s a voice over by Liam Neeson repeating his words from the first film:
“If you make yourself, more than just a man”
“If you devote yourself to an ideal”
“Then you become something else entirely … a legend, Mr. Wayne, a legend!”

I think these lines are very crucial to the Batman persona and conveniently fit Haern’s psyche almost as well. Haern’s actions over the previous books have made him seem more than just a human being. The Thief guilds as well as the Trifect fear and respect him, his actions though scary, have established a peace of sorts in the city of Veldaren. However in Angelport someone has decided to ape him and take his methods a step further. That’s the question raised in this story. How do you stop someone who claims to be following your ideals and makes you out to be everything that you fought against? This question haunts Haern throughout the plot and makes for a great read as the author doesn't’t provide any clear cut answer but gives pointers for the readers to form their own opinions. I very much enjoyed this introspective look into Haern’s actions.

Following the past two books, the author has increased the intrigue and machinations in this one, with there being at least four different parties who are involved and each scheming to get their own demands and objectives. Each faction is vicious and with way more means than Haern, Alyssa and Zusa who find themselves in a new city and without their regular means. This book takes a step in a new direction as it visibly shifts the locale to the city of Angelport, this was a very surprising move on the author’s part as with the last two books being set in Veldaren, it seemed sure that this tale would be set there as well however this is the first of the many surprises laced in the story along with the new cast of characters who are more treacherous, shady and powerful.

The action sequences are a particular highlight of David’s writing and he doesn't disappoint in this one, choc-a-bloc with violence and action that is fast, brutal and has far reaching consequences. The best part of the story is that its pace never slackens and all the twists keep the reader guessing as to who and what is behind all the chaos. The book begins with a murder and from thereon it’s much more mayhem which claims further victims both intended and accidental. Zusa, Haern along with Alyssa go through a physical and emotional wringing of sorts and in this the author has to be lauded for never refusing to make his characters jump through hoops or even killing them off in quite drastic manners.

This book’s theme could be that no matter how good you are, there’s always someone better and sometimes no matter what one does, s*** happens! The world of Neldar is pretty dark to begin with but the city of Angelport stoops to a further low with its morass of misery, avarice and treachery. No one can be fully trusted and this is a lesson which the main characters learn a bit too late for their comfort. The story twists all the way to the climax and the reader will be strung along trying to figure who is the mastermind behind it all. I enjoyed how the author further streamlined the story and removed some of the bleakness as well.

Plus with a slambang ending, the tale ends on a bittersweet note however it still has some faults. Readers will have to let go of their sensibilities when it comes to the main character’s physical institution as Haern does things which defy explanation but in the context of the story and the world, can certainly be overlooked. Lastly there are a couple of plot-threads which are left hanging in regards to Thren Felhorn and the guilds in Veldaren, but I’m hoping that those conflicts will be resolved in the remaining three books of this series.

CONCLUSION: A Dance of Mirrors is a fascinating look at what happens when a harsh light is shined on vigilante actions. Overall this book is almost as good as the second and definitely better than the first. I heartily recommend the entire Shadowdance series to all lovers of dark, action packed fantasy stories. Just be warned that the author is a fan of George R.R. Martin and he follows his hero’s path of scalding the main characters like no other. A Dance of Mirrors is another fascinating look at the perilous life of the Watcher.

A Dance of Mirrors: Analysis
By JOA
I love David Dalglish’s books. There, I said it. Everything he’s put out I’ve devoured and raved about. From Weight of Blood, the introduction to his Half-Orcs series, to his Paladins adventures, each story builds upon the next, further enhancing and enriching the world he’s created and presenting new conspiracies, enemies, and themes.

Now we come to A Dance of Mirrors, the third book in the Shadowdance series. This time around, we find Haern, fully entrenched in his role as King’s Watcher, being led out of Velderan by a copycat killer in the town of Angelport, miles away from home.

For the first time, Dalglish introduces a plot that is truly mysterious and isn’t concluded until the very end. While all of his books possess tremendous character development – and are usually carried by it – this one actually uses the plot itself, the mystery, to drive the story forward, using the previously stated character development to enhance the story, making the characters become even more alive than they already seemed. We understand Alyssa’s doubt, Zusa’s anger, Haern’s guilt, because each step of the way we’re shown why they feel what they’re feeling.

And they aren’t the only characters spotlighted here. We’re also reintroduced to a character from way back in book one, and also get further insight into Madelyn Keenan’s character, who is one of my favorites in the whole book, maybe the whole series. We also get inside the head of the Wraith, this mirror of a creation whose goals and actions don’t quite match up.

This is a book filled – and I mean filled – with meaning and thematic exploration. Everything from drug trafficking to environmental preservation to the question of how far is too far when it comes to the use of violence in making the world a better place are explored. Haern, for his part, is left to question his own motivations, to doubt his every action. He’s confronted with a man much like himself, one that kills ostensibly at random, with no thought given to whether his victims deserve their fate or not. All of which leads Haern to wonder, what makes me so much better than him?

Because of this fact, there are no true heroes in A Dance of Mirrors. What we cheer for when we read are incomplete people – in other words, fantasy representations of actual, real people experiencing the type of trauma – gang violence, drug dealers, vigilantism – that are found in any city across the world. All of which makes me repeat something I’ve said many times before: David Dalglish is not a fantasy author. He’s an author, period; one whose words would mean just as much if they were set in Chicago or Paris or Los Angeles as they do in Velderan…or Angelport.

The bottom line is this: A Dance of Mirrors is a great, great read. The characters are intriguing, the story even better, and it has enough twists to make your head spin. We even get to see elves portrayed as being not-so-elflike – you know, wise and mystical and peaceful and all that – which I absolutely loved. There is heartbreak and anger, betrayal and gut-wrenching decisions, as well as some rather inspired deaths. I heartily recommend it, as I would all of the author’s books. Can't wait for the next one.
